Tonight's lineup: Caps at Flames

Coach Bruce Boudreau definitely shook things up for the Washington Capitals tonight. Boyd Gordon and D.J. King are back in the mix after missing five and three games, respectively. But that's not all.

Based on warm ups Brooks Laich will be at center on the second line, flanked by Tomas Fleischmann and Alexander Semin. Eric Fehr, Tyler Sloan and Marcus Johansson did not participate in the warm-up skate.

Here's what the lineup should look like:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Fleischmann-Laich-Semin
Chimera-Gordon-Bradley
King-Steckel-Hendricks

Defense
Schultz-Green
Alzner-Carlson
Erskine-Fahey

Goal
Neuvirth
Holtby

This is definitely the Caps grittiest lineup. Looking forward to a physical battle tonight.

Anyone know is E Fehr hurt or just being benched?

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 30, 2010 9:59 PM | Report abuse

@icehammer97

I assume he's being benched -- to send the team (and him) a message. He's Bruce's favorite guy to bench when he and/or the team are not going well.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 30, 2010 10:03 PM | Report abuse

Seems the second line is 14-21-22 at least to start.

Thanks Capsfan75

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 30, 2010 10:12 PM | Report abuse

How can they scratch Fehr?

Posted by: tominsocal1 | October 30, 2010 10:12 PM | Report abuse

Not a good start there.

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 30, 2010 10:12 PM | Report abuse

He kicked it just as much as the Caps kicked it the other night when it didn't count.

The league really needs to fix this kicking thing.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | October 30, 2010 10:16 PM | Report abuse

How do we not score on that in front of the net?

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 30, 2010 10:16 PM | Report abuse

@tominsocal1. It didn't look like it ever touched his skate at all. It looked like he kicked air and the puck went in.

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 30, 2010 10:18 PM | Report abuse

Chrissake. They miss a high stick to Kingf's face then don't call charging the golaie when 44 runs Neuvirth. Hate to complain about the refs but it's really bad so far.

No doubt first PP will go to Calgary for some little tiny slash probably on Semin.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | October 30, 2010 10:20 PM | Report abuse

Any live streams anywhere?

PP our way...tom's visions a little cloudy?

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | October 30, 2010 10:22 PM | Report abuse

OK, Caps get PP, but they miss clearly boarding Green thrown into end boards.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | October 30, 2010 10:23 PM | Report abuse

Why does Backstrom in front of the net pass to Ovechkin who is almost on the wall? Or team refuses to just shoot from good places.

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 30, 2010 10:23 PM | Report abuse

can we decline our next PP they had better chances than we did.

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 30, 2010 10:25 PM | Report abuse

Carlson really struggling on point to keep the puck in. Missed two of them leading to Flames odd-man breaks each time.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | October 30, 2010 10:27 PM | Report abuse

Good thing Gordon got a jersey.

Neuvirth is the best player on this team.

Posted by: underpants2 | October 30, 2010 10:31 PM | Report abuse

That is as bad as a PK can look without getting scored on.

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 30, 2010 10:31 PM | Report abuse

Let's see if the message has gone stale.

Posted by: underpants2 | October 30, 2010 10:34 PM | Report abuse

Needless to say, we're missing Poti out there.

Posted by: Terptwin | October 30, 2010 10:35 PM | Report abuse

I say bring in Holtby. If nothing else maybe the team will actually play some D if they have him in net.

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 30, 2010 10:35 PM | Report abuse

We never went and got a #2C all summer due to "plenty of depth." Here we are Game #11 and:

1) Flash moved back to wing;
2) MP scratched after one very good game and two mediocre/below avg;
3) MaJo hurt.

Wow. Alzner deflects the first one in and Fahey deflects the second. Bad play by Fahey per HNIC announcers.

No depth at C and no depth at D.

Didn't some of us point that out ALL SUMMER?

Posted by: tominsocal1 | October 30, 2010 10:37 PM | Report abuse

this team could miss the playoffs. no joke. i'm sick of the lackluster performance/effort. it's ridiculous how many bad periods this team has had.

Posted by: rachel216 | October 30, 2010 10:39 PM | Report abuse

Bad day for the Caps so far. I had a very bad feeling about it before hand for several reasons.

1) Calgary has Bouwmeester. As overrated as he is in many ways, he absolutely kills the Caps. (No coincidence that we could beat the Florida Panthers last year with him gone.)

2) Caps are generally a disaster out west

3) Nothing else was going right for Caps' rooters today even prior to the game, with the Flyers and Pens both winning and the Caps farm teams losing.

Hopefully Ted is watching.

Posted by: underpants2 | October 30, 2010 10:43 PM | Report abuse

Carlson tried to make it a hat trick of deflected goals off Caps defensemen for the Flames but Neuvy was great on that one.

It isn't Poti we miss it's a real first-pair defensive defenseman.

Posted by: Terptwin | October 30, 2010 10:47 PM | Report abuse

OK, that was nice, just put on the Backie jersey for that.

Let's see if now we can follow-up with a hard-working goal too.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | October 30, 2010 10:48 PM | Report abuse

Not make the playoffs. As bad as we have been so far this year we are only 2 points back of where we were after 10 games last year and we are 5th in the East. Please people stop acting like we are NJ.

Hope is never dead @Icehammer until the game ends. Too early for gloom and doom.

Posted by: nicety251 | October 30, 2010 10:49 PM | Report abuse

Backchecking isn't part of Ovie's job description today. I'd love to see if he's wearing that "stay angry" t-shirt underneath his jersey.

how many guys on this team wear an "A" on the jersey?

5, 6??

Posted by: joek443 | October 30, 2010 10:54 PM | Report abuse

It's interesting to hear the Calgary commentators. They make it pretty clear that they expect Ovie's line to just explode anytime.

Posted by: jakopz | October 30, 2010 10:54 PM | Report abuse

Wow! Even a confirmed former Kool-Aider like rachel216 is sampling a black robe!

But, think of this: As much as we got outplayed over a good part of the 1st Period, it was a 1-1 game if not for a bad play by Fahey.

Why is Fahey wearing a jersey?

Oh, we had plenty of depth on D and none of the free agents were any better than what we had.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | October 30, 2010 10:57 PM | Report abuse

@tom. I am not watching the Flames feed so I cannot hear what they are saying but why exactally was that on Fahey? It was a 2 on 1 and it didn't look like the puck bounced off him (and Locker agrees). Since he forced a shot from fairly far out I fail to see how that was on him.

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 30, 2010 11:02 PM | Report abuse

Langway and Hatcher? Salary cap aside, I would even settle for Morrisson and Jurcina at this point. How much gas does Souray (IR) have left in the tank anyway?

It is about time the PP started clicking.

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 30, 2010 11:21 PM | Report abuse

icehammer: The puck very clearly deflected off Fahey's stick and went over Neuvy's glove.

In my mind, on a normal play, a defenseman either has to go down and block the shot or let the goalie see it.

2 on 1 the defenseman is supposed to "play the pass." By cutting off the pass the d-man allows the goalie to watch the puck carrier and prepare for the shot. Instead Fahey tried a weak poke-check that resulted in a deflection that resulted in a goal. Maybe some others who actually play hockey (I haven't since I was ten) can comment further but I saw it as a bad play by Fahey. He not only failed to prevent anything from happening but contributed to a goal against. It wasn't bad luck. It was a bad play.

Bottom line is we are one injury away from Sloan playing and two injuries away from Fahey playing. This is absolutely NOT a Cup worthy defensive corps.

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 30, 2010 11:27 PM | Report abuse

And why is Fahey wearing a jersey?

1) Poti is hurt
2) Sloan is hurt

Therefore, we are desperate, defensively.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 30, 2010 11:31 PM | Report abuse

@tom. I agree with you on our lack of NHL D. However having played hockey for 18 years (14 at D) and just finishing my college career I feel he played it fairly well. He took away the pass and forced the player to wind up. He then tried to get his stick in the way to stop that as well. Even if it did hit off his stick I see it as more bad luck than a bad play. Now he has made many other bad plays but that one was played fairly well.

It's absolutely comical how people overreact on here (and elsewhere, for that matter). It's freaking OCTOBER and already some have packed it in. To proclaim that this team sucks, they won't make the playoffs, blah, blah, in October is being over dramatic. Like someone posted above, they are TWO points behind last year's pace. Quite frankly, I wouldn't mind if they made the playoffs as like a 4 or 5 seed. But to claim that this team won't make the playoffs, right now, is ridiculous.

We need King to rough someone up now, Ovie to complete the hatty, and finish with strong shut down team D.

Move aside nostrathomas, SAOTI is here to be the new prophet. :)

Sheesh.

SAOTI, you need to do more than call one game :)

OK, was very nice that Caps put out a good effort.

Caroilina = very nice effort; Wild = sucked; Flames = very nice effort.

Last words I heard end of game from Locker was, "Let's see if we can get some consistency."

Also, if not for Neuvy playing fantastic early, this comback might not have been possible. And, Flames were incredibly undisciplined. That weak hook for a 3-on-5 early in the second was a huge game breaker.

Caps also got some good bounces (shots found holes) and that reminds me maybe I was a bit harsh earlier in games where the same effort didn't find the twine. Sometimes that's just how it is.

I never would have thought to demote Knuble but that worked. I have and others talked about his snakebit luck and have also wondered if he's lost a step. He's, what, 39?

Hockey is half mental like anything in life. Many games Caps chances (Knuble) wound up stopped by golaie. Today they went in. Success builds upon itself. Let's see coming home if the Caps can continue the winning ways.

I still say we need to trade for a center, a true #2 center, and a #1 D. I will say that the rest of the year even if we win every game because those two players are Playoff requirements.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | October 31, 2010 1:03 AM | Report abuse

i'm impressed that they chose to focus on D in the third - just last year they would have tried to see how many guys they could get on the scoreboard - and given up one or two goals.
neuvy looks like the real deal so far - however at this rate he'll get in 74 games. i'll be looking for holtby to make his debut soon.

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | October 31, 2010 1:17 AM | Report abuse

@tominsocal1

Good post, Tom.

Agree that if Neuvy hadn't played well early, the comeback wouldn't have happened.

I had felt like it was time to make some changes on our Top 2 lines as the present configuration was just not working as designed. (Even if Katie had given us no hint that the right wing's were a changing.)

Yes, I agree with the assessment that we still need a true 2C and more depth at defense.

Trade Semin!!! Fire the coach. Fire GMGM.

LOL. I am happy BB decided to put the trio (no names needed) together again. Semin has been handicapped without good and constant line mates for too long - Unleash the beast, Mr. B. - Alas, I don’t think this line will stay together long …

Yes, I know I'm a guilty party for overreacting at times.

It seems like when the Caps play poorly, they really play poorly. And, when we see them repeat the errors that have hurt them in playoffs past, everyone gets more worried. So, the paranoia gets the better of us.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
Ass whoopin. What else can you say?

Good to see some lineup changes by the coach - hopefully some messages get sent and nice to see more grit in there.

Neuvy - stayed focused throughout. Good way to rebound by the team after falling behind on a couple bad deflections.

This team was on fire up and down the ice tonight.

Welcome back to the score sheet Ovie.

Safe flight home for the guys and a day of rest. Time for some home cookin next week. Bring on the Leafs.

It's been a two point night.

@hock1

Yes, it was time to shake up the first line. If we were demoting Knuble, someone else would have to take his place and the options for that job are Semin and Fehr.

(The way the game went against the Wild, I would not have been surprised to see any crazy combination or permutation to try to generate something.)

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 31, 2010 1:46 AM | Report abuse

hock1: Let me say, after a game like this, I really, really, really, really try not to be negative...

BUT...

The Caps didn't win through hard work. They won through glitz and because the Flames took the lead and then failed on the PK and then had some bad luck and then quit.

No one here, not even the most ardent Dark Sider (OK, maybe except joek443), would deny the Caps have great talent. Teams don't win the PT w/o great talent. BUT, tonight's effort by no means (over a lesser Western team) makes me more comfortable about next April.

I've seen the Caps win games like tonight all last year and the year before and it meant nothing in the Playoffs.

Let's face it, and this is the bottom line, the Caps advertise themselves as a "serious Cup contender." Therefore we as fans and critics view them as such. Things like having Sloan and Fahey as #7 and 8 d-men are viewed in context of "Well, it works vs Flames, but it won't work in Game 7 vs Crosby."

So, please, let's try and not get too fired up over one very good game, just as I must remind myself not to get too down over one really lame effort vs Wild. What we need to examine is trend and that is not a one game thing. Caps are still one of the "Nine Elite" at present (Caps, Pens, Bruins, Flyers, Chi, Det, Van, SJ, Kings) and have say 10% chance for Cup. Skill, hard work and lucky bounces all help decide who wins.

Unless we get a free pass and get to play the Flames in all four rounds of the SCP, tonight's win is just a win. Because all those other elite teams aren't going to play as undisciplined as Calgary played tonight.

This is a really good point because, based on past performance, we have no reason to believe the Caps can play up to 28 games over four series without going into a funk. Consistency as mentioned by Locker at the end of the broadcast means eliminating highs and lows and evolving into that robotic style of play, game in and game out, like we are accustomed from Detroit over say the last 15 years. When we get that from the Caps, they will be champs.

Great album BTW ("Paranoid") and hats off to Ozzie and the band.

Just got finished watching the game on DVR (I wasn't hiding... was watching basketball/baseball that overlapped the start of the Caps game).

The offensive creativity was great and I think you need to seriously consider keeping 8-19-28 together permanently. I understand the issues they've had in the past (getting cute, lack of D) and that using Semin on the 2nd line creates more scoring balance but I still think it's something to consider.

On the negative side, Carlson has had some really, really rough stretches early this season despite the praise. Maybe he hasn't been healthy but while is good is solid, his bad stretches do make you wonder if he's ready. If we were a rebuilding team, it would be one thing but we're not. It takes years for most defensemen to figure it out, if they ever do. Green and Schultz still have a lot to learn and are kids themselves. Alzner's had his struggles as well so the same applies there. We have a very young D which just doesn't seem like a good idea.

We got dominated in the first period for the most part and Neuvirth bailed us out a few times or it could've been worse heading into the 2nd.

Still, even a whiner like me enjoyed the 2nd period for obvious reasons.

The 3rd period was pond hockey and nothing to evaluate there.

I know I have the benefit of having sat out this thread, but I reallhy felt from the opening face off that the Caps would win this one. Yes, they had their breakdowns in the first (Carlson), but they had extra jump in their step.

Semin is a beast.
