Canada wears out Norway in opener

(Hans Deryk/Reuters)
From the Associated Press:
Jarome Iginla and Dany Heatley scored twice and heavily favored Canada overcame some early nervousness and a scoreless first period to roll over Norway, 8-0, in its highly anticipated Olympic hockey opener Tuesday.
The Canadians are so deep and balanced that 15 players figured in their first six goals. Sidney Crosby had three assists in his Olympic debut as Canada showed off the offensive strength it lacked in Turin four years ago, when it was shut out in three of its final four games while finishing seventh.
Update: Iginla has been credited with Canada's last goal, making it a hat trick.

Semin and Ovi look like kids in a candy store.
Steal...pass...unload...reload.

Is there a separate live blog or is it just quiet around here?

The Russian team is fun to watch. 3 current Caps, 2 former Caps, and plenty of fire power. Hope some team can beat Canada. I'd hate to see Crosby win gold.

(Sorry to any Canadian here) Lose, lose Canada. Nice country but too many guys I dislike on the team. Go Russia and outscore everyone Ovie. Go for the Silver Sweden.

I'm rooting for USA first. Sweden second.
But Canada and Russia will probably be 1, 2 in some order.

richmondphil good point. Forgot about Gonch. Been several yrs since I actually rooted for him. That was a nice goal by Malkin on the PP. Russia looking very solid.

Good point. 3 former Caps, 3 current Caps. But we're unlikely to see Varlamov. He's clearly goalie #3.
Semin to Ovechkin. He scores!!!!!!!!
What a play.

Poor Varly. If not for his rash of injuries the last few months, he'd be the clear #2 goalie.

Don't forget about Tomas Fleischmann with the Czech Republic! The Czechs have about 16 current NHLers, so they aren't going to be total slouches.
Russia's period #2 here against Latvia didn't look that good. They are going to have to up the level of play to have a chance at gold.

Ovie with his second. And shortly after, Russia gets it's 6th. I think they'll be okay.

After Russia gave up that early goal in the 3rd, they came back super PO'd. I think they have this game in hand.
Posted by: cbs75 | February 17, 2010 1:49 AM | Report abuse
Yup. I should've bet on Russia minus the 4.5-goal spread. Oops.

Ovie is such a great team player.
