Capitals 5, Islanders 3

Mike Green scored both the tying and winning power-play goals in the third period, becoming just the eighth defenseman in NHL history to tally 30 in a season and giving the Caps a 5-3 victory over the Islanders at Verizon Center.

Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading goal No. 54 thanks to a perfect pass from Sergei Fedorov and AHL leading scorer (and frequent call-up) Keith Aucoin got his first tally as a Cap. Nicklas Backstrom added an empty-netter to seal the deal with less than a minute to go.

John Erskine supplied plenty of toughness against the NHL-worst Isles, who put up a fight and forced Washington to rally in the third.

Tarik will be back a bit later with postgame notes and quotes, so stay tuned.

Go Caps. Magic No. 1; 3 up on the Devils

Posted by: Sonyask | April 1, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Sorry, Lindsay. Keep em coming

Posted by: Sonyask | April 1, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Tough to stay caught up here ;). Forget the 1 point magic number, the new magic number is 8 points for the 2 seed.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 1, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom had the empty-netter, FYI.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 1, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Lindsay, I show Backstrom as having scored the empty netter. Ovechkin still "only" has 54, right?

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | April 1, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom scored the empty netter..

Posted by: jogabonito | April 1, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Didn't Backstrom get the empty netter?

Posted by: dezlboy1 | April 1, 2009 9:47 PM | Report abuse

My bad, everyone. Added now!

Posted by: Lindsay Applebaum | April 1, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

She's already on it. :)

Posted by: richmondphil | April 1, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

And the Devils are getting killed! Yes, this is probably one of the rare times I'm rooting for the Pens. (Okay, the Pens can then quiet down as soon as Carolina's eliminated.)

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 1, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Congratz to Caps with a comeback win - just what they needed :) Could score more goals, but a win is a win and you cant score em all.

Posted by: Hazz | April 1, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

I fear no one come playoff time...although I'd like to snag the 2/7 matchup so we could have home ice in 2nd round too, and maybe in the ECF when either Philly or Pitt upsets Boston.

ORONTO (AP) -The Maple Leafs have been fined $500,000 by the NHL and stripped of a fourth-round draft pick because of how they handled the signing of Swedish defenseman Jonas Frogren.

Frogren, who has been on the injured list since early March, had been under contract to a Swedish elite league club before joining Toronto. The transaction apparently went around the NHL's collective bargaining agreement.

"The Toronto Maple Leafs acknowledge and apologize for the error of judgment," general manager Brian Burke said in a statement Wednesday night. "The club accepts the punishment handed down by the league and will not be commenting further."

Cliff Fletcher was in charge when Frogren's services were acquired last summer.

LOL

Lindsay -- Most of us won't tell but watch out for the trolls.

Posted by: uncatim | April 1, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom took the puck away in offensive zone and scored the empty netter. He deserved a goal minutes before but MacDonald gloved his effort.

Posted by: Hazz | April 1, 2009 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Toronto...owned. They're trying to let Philly back in it too...3-2 now 1:29 to go.

I love me some BB, he is real.

The Maple Leafs survive and hold on, 3-2, Philly loses.

Well Toronto held on and won

I don't understand some of the Maple Leafs' moves. They acquired all the injured ex Caps from Tampa Bay who are out for the season like Kolzig and Heward. And mess up the signing of Frogren.

Why would they want to acquire old injured guys anyway? They should try to rebuild.

thanks Greg!

Man, struggling against two of the bottom dwellers is def. not good prep for the Playoffs - hope they roll on through with some authority

Posted by: johnzilla | April 1, 2009 10:07 PM | Report abuse

What was up with Semin tonight? He screwed up at least two golden opportunities. In one of them, he passed at the last second when he had a clear shot on the net.

Posted by: caraveli | April 1, 2009 10:07 PM | Report abuse

8 D-men in the HISTORY of the game...come on!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 1, 2009 10:08 PM | Report abuse

IMO...Semin was hot garbage tonight...not his best game

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 1, 2009 10:09 PM | Report abuse

Isles beat Detroit 2-0 and pushed Philly to a shootout recently...they haven't been playing like a bottom dweller of late something like 13-13-5 last 31 games now.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 1, 2009 10:09 PM | Report abuse

Semin did have some nice takeaways and the great look on the tying goal.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 1, 2009 10:10 PM | Report abuse

Oh yeah...GREAT blind pass by Semin on the first Green goal....but...

other than that....hot garbage

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 1, 2009 10:13 PM | Report abuse

@Davethecapsfan

Excellent point, they definitely hustled like a Playoff-bound team. I think what bothered me was the laziness that a team that's much better than .500 would have capitalized on more often.

Posted by: johnzilla | April 1, 2009 10:17 PM | Report abuse

Well, glad to get the win, a bit of luck in the 3rd but we'll take it. Nylander again was an embarrassment, turned the puck over that led to Brad Park's goal, tended to just stand around or circle around when he had the puck, or simply just lose it. He appeared to be benched for much of the 3rd period and should be benched for the rest of the season. Total of only 8 minutes for the game ... but had he played any more we would have lost the game. Glad Bruce got him off the ice; not a moment too soon.

Time to root for the Rangers tomorrow...beat 'em any way you can. 4-1 to the finish locks up 2 seed.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 1, 2009 10:23 PM | Report abuse

CapsFan75, In essence, they were buying that draft pick that came with them. They give up a mid-grade prospect for another mid-grade prospect and two expiring contracts and a fourth round pick. Leafs had cap room to take them for the rest of the season.

Future Jeopardy question....

Who are...

Dennis Potvin, Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey, Raymond Bourque, Kevin Hatcher, Doug Wilson, Phil Housley, AND MIKE GREEN!!!!

jmu_capsgirl, great explanation, plus you saved me the trouble of typing something similar. :)

@jmu_caps_girl and Greg Annapolis,

I must admit you're more up on the details of that trade than I am. Still wonder why they acquired them to start with.

Let's talk about how much Comcast SportsNet sucks. Who's the moron who thinks that we need to hear from Ronaldo Wynn during the Caps postgame show? Isn't there room in the other 19 hours of daily Redskins coverage to talk about how he's going to be a huge disappointment for the Skins this year? God I hate that network.

Caps Win! Made my birthday a little better.

Posted by: bajgirl | April 1, 2009 10:46 PM | Report abuse

CapsFan75, I remember thinking it didn't make any sense, until folks starting fussing over it. The Leafs had money to burn and a desire to rebuild, so they sent a prospect to Tampa in exchange for a prospect they liked better and a draft pick. But to make it sound better, they took two useless contracts off Tampa's books. Doesn't matter who's contracts they were, since the odds of either Kolzig or Heward signing in Toronto at the end of the season aren't good. Its a loophole in the fact that you can't swap cold hard cash for players or picks.

@Dave

I'm with ya man, forget locking up the division that's done in my mind especially after the win tonight. I want 2nd place in the conference. That way we're guaranteed home ice to the conf finals and if somebody happens to knock off the B's then we're golden to the Cup Finals! Heck if Detroit and San Jose flop (and they have in the past) we could have home ice in the Cup Finals as well.

@jmscapsgirl,

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 1, 2009 10:49 PM | Report abuse

I'm with Dave the Caps fan, go Rangers. Knock off Carolina and finish them off. (And to make a terrible pun, it would be even better if a Finn had the winning goal, except the Rangers don't have any Finns on their roster.)

I can have rooting interest for the Rangers, at least tomorrow. Chris Drury is an alum of my elder daughter's college, BU. (Normally, I despise NY teams in all sports.)

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 1, 2009 10:53 PM | Report abuse

CapsFan75, I'm a bit of a CBA, trade, contract, etc dork. They fascinate me. I didn't realize though, that that draft pick was the one the league stripped them of. Kind of makes me laugh.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 1, 2009 10:53 PM | Report abuse

Tarik - any word on Semin? He left in the 2nd limping and was in pain each time he came off the ice.

Legends On Ice for $2000 please, Alex.

None of our Bears rookies made the AHL All-Rookie team. theahl.com has info on the guys who were picked.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 1, 2009 11:06 PM | Report abuse

for _828, Semin played during 3rd period. Had the primary assist to Green when Green scored the tying goal. He had 2 couple of shots on goal that didn't make it. So, he wasn't out of commission after the 2nd.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 1, 2009 11:26 PM | Report abuse

IMO, Aucoin deserves to stay on the team through the playoffs. Sit Nyls butt down. We need the energy and sraight to the net attitude Aucoin brings.

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | April 1, 2009 11:34 PM | Report abuse

@jmu_capsgirl

Interesting note on the draft pick that Toronto acquired and now lost.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 1, 2009 11:41 PM | Report abuse

@CTCapsPhan,

I agree that AuCoin has played his way into the Caps lineup. Probably instead of Brash, depending on Brash's knee and certainly for next year.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 1, 2009 11:43 PM | Report abuse

In the bad pun department, could we say the Joel Rechlicz is rather reckless in his play. 9 penalty minutes. 5 minutes fighting and 2 2 minute minor and the second minor penalty turning out to be costly.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 1, 2009 11:47 PM | Report abuse

I think Brash is needed on the 4th line. I think Aucoin should go in as 3rd line center.

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | April 1, 2009 11:50 PM | Report abuse

Congrats Mike Green! I've been saying all year if he gets 30 goals he wins the Norris. I guess we'll see about the latter part of that formula soon enough.

Posted by: RicketyCricket | April 1, 2009 11:56 PM | Report abuse

I'd like to see Aucoin stay on as well and challenge our guys for lineup spots. The only thing is that he is an emergency recall, and we only have four non-emergency recalls after the deadline. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Pothier is the only non-emergency recall so far, so it's possible to do, but be aware of the situation.
