Capitals behind, 4-2, after two periods

The Capitals did not have the same energy level in the second period, and Montreal capitalized on a goal by Andrei Kostitsyn at 11 minutes 6 seconds.

Forward Michael Cammelleri set up the goal by controlling the puck behind the Capitals net, then delivering a backhanded pass to Kostitsyn, who had set up in front of goalie Semyon Varlamov. As soon as the puck got to Kostitsyn's stick, he sent it past Varlamov, and Montreal led grew its lead to 3-1.

Kostitsyn, who also scored once in the first period, wasn't done. He recorded a hat trick at 17:44 after redirecting a shot from teammate Jaroslav Spacek from inside the blue line past Varlamov on a power play, and the Canadiens had the crowd at Verizon Center stunned.

The Capitals responded quickly with a much-needed goal by center Nicklas Backstrom, who collected the puck off the boards and skated into the left faceoff circle before firing a slap shot past Jaroslav Halak with less than two minutes to play. That cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Capitals closed the period on a power play that carried over into the final period.

Compete level is low. Keith Jones is right: Caps don't respect their opponent.

The worst offense (Bos) score 5 today and the best is lucky to have 2.

Umberger was right then, huh?

We do not play the right way.

Maybe he was just giving his honest opinion and we just didn't want to believe it.

Semin is embarrassing himself. How many times has he got the puck along the boards, turned, and blindly fired it?

@kyle

I have it on mute. What did they say?

I was really depressed about the 1st loss but now I'm resigned to the reality of things. I'm still bummed out but there is more of an acceptance.

Has GMGM built this team well?

Are Boudreau's systems NHL-caliber or do they just work more effectively at the AHL level where you can get away with a high risk/high reward style of play because of the lesser defenses and goalies?

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 17, 2010 8:53 PM | Report abuse

@capsvechkin

This isn't on one person in general. If you need a coach to pump you up to play a PLAYOFF game then you have some serious issues as a professional hockey player. Aside from Chimera, no one looks good consistently out there, and even Chimera's turnover led to a Montreal goal, so he hasn't been perfect either.

Posted by: Aldred15 | April 17, 2010 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and this just in, Crosby is better than OV! And this from a 25 year caps fan!

Posted by: kkd76

.. I'm starting to think so too. Besides the fact he already had a Cup and the medal.. Crosby played awesome last night and it was his effort that got Letang the winning goal last night. Ovechkin hasn't been the impact player he needs to be.

Sorry I got so angry at RJ's comment. He looks like a friggin genius right now.

Caps need to be more disciplined in the defensive zone. It's such a contrast from the Habs. The Habs are aren't drifting away from their specific defensive areas while the Caps will have 3 defenders at the boards leaving HUGE lanes for the Habs to score.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 17, 2010 8:55 PM | Report abuse

They just basically said where are the Capitals? Who is this team? And that Crosby is better.

I don't think there is anyway the Caps can justify retaining BB if they get bounced in the first round of the playoffs as a home favorite. Crazy, you may think--consider that the SD Chargers fired Marty Schottenheimer after a 14-2 season...sometimes you just know if a coach can't get it done in the post-season.

Posted by: nomarjax01 | April 17, 2010 8:56 PM | Report abuse

You can pick at different players for their performance, but the problem is in the system itself.

Why can't they swich to a 1-2-2 forecheck and just play a tight game?

Their style right now is working agaist them.

I just dont understand why our team doesnt play with the fire I see other teams play with in the playoffs. Im seeing forwards standing straight up waiting on our defenseman to clear the puck so they can go for the score. PLAY DEFENSE FIRST!!! I cant believe this team has not figured that out...crowd the net, play every shift hard, stop with the pretty stuff and Play Hard!! its not just ovie...its ALL OF THEM!! Green's not even giving them anything on the PP or on offense in general. It's a putrid Caps PP so far in the playoffs. Opportunities have been given to the Caps this period, but they may end up losing because of a screwed up play in the defensive zone. We've seen this song and dance before, and it's disappointing that the Caps never learn from it.

@floms

I agree 100%.

I used to think it was personnel but even if that is an issue, it's less of an issue than the system and the habits that the coaches are teaching (or not teaching) this team.

Posted by: randysbailin | April 17, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

The Caps will have a new coach, new gm, and half of their current defense. The players are talented enough to play 2 way hockey, but the cherry-picking system leaves the Caps too vulnerable to odd man rushes. The Habs are playing a version of the NJ system, playing back, waiting for the Caps to screw up. And it works. Umberger was exactly right, the Caps system is fine for the regular season and the minor leagues. But to let MTL to score FIVE goals, that is just stupid. That team is an offensive 95 pound weakling and they score 5?!? NO way the Caps win this series.

Well F me and I'll eat my shorts. I still think that BB relies too much on talent and not enough on system. MTL should never score 5. The Caps should be dominating this series and they are playing like they did against NYR last year. So no sweep, but the Caps have to force the middle on offense and jam up the middle on defense. I hope the Caps do win in MTL, but this is really tuff.

Maybe the Caps can put Carlson at D on the powerplay and move Ovi down low. You have to be able to pass the puck on a powerplay and Semin hasn't learned how yet.

Posted by: wgoodm01 | April 17, 2010 10:06 PM | Report abuse

1. they're in a better position now than they were against the Rangers last year.

2. only took a little over a game to solve Halak

3. probably not a good idea to go back to Theo in Montreal of all places... Varly did give up 3 goals but two of them were kinda flukey bounces and the first one was a point blank shot that he had little chance on stopping.

Semin did not score, which makes me wrong about my prediction, but he will wake up soon. I promise you this.

I think maybe all the lines shifting late in the season and the players not having a consistent set of linemates recently is having a negative effect though. At this point, hindsight is 20/20 and all that, but I'm really wondering whether the Capitals wouldn't have been better off not making a move.

Not a hater, but a lover. Been a Caps fan since my dad took me to my first back in 77. I live outside of Philthy so I take a ton of Flyer crap. That being said, I still think BB's system is HIGHLY flawed. The Caps have played down to their opponents. Martin has seriously outcoached BB. No way should Kats have a hat trick. The Caps system hangs their goalies out to dry and signs weak defenders like Poti and Corvo. The Caps have way too much talent to allow the Habs dictate the style of play. Force the middle and force the Habs to go outside. Play defense first and pounce when the oppurtunity presents itself. I am not impressed with BB -- he loses game one and has an optional practice -- wtf.

Nothing like drinking all alone because all your friends went out before the game was over! (I can't drink while the Caps are playing such an important game)

Oh well, time to play catch up! With an amazing reason to celebrate. This could get messy....

I THINK MOST CAPS FANS WOULD GLADLY PUT SOME $$$$ TOGETHER TO MAKE SURE IT HAPPENS!

I would love to get him locked up for the same amount of years as Ovie has left. It would great to see the two them together as a tandem for 10+ years!!!!

Players that need to go;
Shultz - No speed, slap shot can't break glass, falls down when hit, won't hit back, always clears puck up the boards.
Semin - All he does well is shoot. Plays like he thinks he is in a pickup game. Trade him for a top D-man.
Corvo & Walker - Just rentals. Better players in Hershey.

@wgoodm01 - great insight on setting up the PP. I said that to a friend tonight. Put Carlson up top..he has the presence of mind to fake a shot. Ovie just winds and shoots everytime. You've gotta stick Ovie down low. It doesn't have to be like that everytime but hell mix it up. Great call.

I hope the Caps realize that the third period, the pace at which they played in that period, is the way playoff ALWAYS has to be played.

There is no time off.

It is always in fifth gear.

If the Caps keep that kind of momentum and energy the rest of this series, Montreal will not be able to keep up!!!

LETS GO CAPS!

Posted by: dglelite | April 17, 2010 10:21 PM | Report abuse

Well, I guess we finally realized it's the playoffs. Once we finally woke up, we dominated.

Now, if the team can actually stay focused and sharp like that for 60 minutes, instead of 25, the Capitals can win 6-2, or 6-3, instead of 6-5 in OT, when anything is possible and you're hanging on by a thread.

Some thoughts.

Bench Green or knock his ice time way down for game 3. If he doesn't respond with some defensive awareness, bench him permanently for the playoffs, challenge him to become a defenceman in the off-season and if he doesn't show in the first quarter of the season that he's willing to do it, trade him. I'm serious. His liabilities are killing this team. Carlson is the only d-man the caps have. The rest should just be dumped. Green has trade value, though, so give him a chance to turn it around first. If it works, he can be a great player.

Carlson. team mvp in the postseason so far. again, only d-man they have. 2 huge goals tonight.

semin, in game 23 of his postseason career, finally played. nice. bad penalty but if that's what it takes to get him to show up, i guess i can live with it.

backstrom. the cool one added a little fire to his game tonight and came up big. just have to keep it up.

Ovechkin is out of his funk. a shift in tactics, he has moved to his "off" wing. the guys at vs. picked up on it. but he is also driving to the net and throwing his weight around. that's playoff hockey. gotta keep it up.

remember fehr's goal. it saved this game at the start, so it could be won later.

Our coach was celebrating like we just won the Cup.

Boudreau is getting badly outcoached in this series from both a strategic and motivational standpoint. The latter is particularly surprising because motivation is supposedly Boudreau's middle name. It took a huge deficit to wake up a lot of the player. It shouldn't be that way.

4-2 not insurmountable. Caps will play a high-risk period, and if things go well, they can win. If they (circumstances) go the other way, score could end up 6-3.

@Capt_Kirk_in_AZ

If the caps continued to play the way they were the series was over. we said most of those things because they shouldn't have to have a "wake up" call to play playoff hockey.

There shouldn't be any reason for us to have to come from behind to make us play the way we should have been playing since the drop of the puck.

And also, most of us who were trashing the caps already admitted to eating our words so we don't need you to be the narc.

we can't continue to have to fight from 3 goals down and expect to win the cup, plain and simple.

it's not so much about calling the game lost, i had my doubts about this game too - it was more about the tone of what a failure this team, season and coaching staff is.
i can tolerate opinions that criticize the players and coaches at times - but the way some turn on their own team frustrates me.
when i first found CI, i thought this was a great place where everyone was optimistic about the improvements in the caps. it's gotten to be where when something doesn't go right - it jump ship.
i get frustrated like everyone else with how the caps play sometimes - but i just can't stand when they are throw under the bus
there - maybe it's out of my system now...

Incredible, just incredible. I can take my Caps gear off the burn pile thanks to Backs & Carlson.

Schultz is slower than dial-up and Green has been a total liability. No physical presence, responsible for at least 2 Habs goals and stupid, just fing stupid with the puck. Sit his steakhead ass.

Varly's gotta be in the pipes for game 3. As we saw tonight, the difference between winning and losing in this series is slim and if you start Jose, the crowd will lay into him from the first drop of the puck and the Habs will have the psychological edge.

Posted by: jeffhayes1 | April 17, 2010 10:46 PM | Report abuse

All these people who are saying the BB were outcoached...please defned your position as to how he has been outcoached?

The first game was all about Halak and his 45 saves.

And tonight, in what was probably the biggest COACHING decisions of the series so far, the coach everyone was calling to have fired made the pivotal move by replacing Theo with Varly.

He could have very easily called timeout and left Theo in there because the first two goals were not entirely his fault.

But it was a great move and Varly played excellent as none of the three goals he gave up were his fault.

Now, Game 3 is going to be interesting. Montreal's crowd and the Canadiens fuming about giving this game up...sets up for interesting opening 10 minutes in that game!!!

Lets go Caps!

all that attention on Ovie opens up for rest of shift, if they want to take up the slack

Posted by: Satchelass | April 17, 2010 10:51 PM | Report abuse

The problem with Green and Semin is exactly as Corvo described during an intermission. They are both trying to do too much. They need to learn to do the simple play, chip in a corner, instead of trying to do everything themselves.

Also, I'm sick of them trying to scoreoff the rush. If you get clogged up, dump the puck in.

As for the defense, they need to quit giving the Habs so much space. I get it..they are a fast team, but I'd rather see someone try to move the puck or a body instead of just backing up, backing up until the puck is in the net.

Yeah, I noted after Game 1 that the shadow on Ovi may limit him, but it opens up the other guys and gives them more space. Glad to see it come into fruition.

Also, although Knuble didn't enjoy the 4-point night his linemates did, he was absolutely crucial in a lot of those goals. Crowd, knock, bump, antagonize Halak.

Shoot the puck! I was yelling at my TV through 2 periods shoot the freakin puck.

Force them to worry and go back.

I will say this - San Jose won 6-5 in OT last night. Theirt goalie Nabokov gave up 5 goals on only 13 shots!

This is good for teams like the Caps if all the goalies and defenses start to suck - but shoot the puck, make rebounds and put them in!

We got inside of Halak's head (and crease) tonight. When it counted, our best players played like our best players.

We outhit them. We outshot them. We outdueled them. And, finally, we outscored them.

Am I happy about our pedestrian defense and shaky goaltending tonight? No.

Am I stirred by the heart of this team? Hell yes. The Caps have shown that no matter the circumstances, they have the skill, the speed and the gonads to get the job done.

This is turning point. It's a new series now. The Caps might just be ready to take this series over. Let's see what transpires Monday night!

A great win, but this series is far from over. There is a need for some perspective here. Ovi and Backstrom seem to have it in gear, which is encouraging. Knuble has been doing his job, like he always does. But neither Caps goalie is exactly tearing it up, the top d pairing is having problems, the power play is in a slump, the PK is still highly inconsistent, and the forwards are still not doing much back-checking. Lots of things to work on before this team starts to look like a SC Champ.

Posted by: zmega | April 17, 2010 11:06 PM | Report abuse

One of the reason we had only 15 losses in the season...many times we play like crap and then explode and pull it out...tonight I think the banging of players early also tired them down and created space for when Montreal got complacent late.

The ice will be much better in Montreal and we should get back to some better tape to tape passing and puck control. The ice softened up and the bad bouces killed both teams and goalies tonight.
