Capitals, Canadiens tied at 1 after first period

The Washington Capitals opened the Stanley Cup playoffs much in the same fashion as they started many regular-season games: by allowing the opponent to score first.

The Canadiens converted a power-play opportunity to take a 1-0 lead after Michael Cammalleri's slap shot beat goalie Jose Theodore short side over his blocker. The goal at 12 minutes 36 seconds of the first period came after Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom was called for a cross-check.

The Capitals answered at 4:27 on a goal by defenseman Joe Corvo, who joined the team on March 3 at the trade deadline. Corvo collected the puck in the middle of the offensive zone and fired a blistering shot past goalie Jaroslav Halak, who was screened by Jason Chimera, another player not on the roster to start the season.

The Capitals clearly were the aggressor throughout the period, outshooting Montreal 19-7. But the Canadiens stayed in the game thanks to Halak, who time and again turned away quality chances by the Capitals. Among his best saves was a one-on-one stop against Tomas Fleischmann.

if they just keep up their physical play, they will evetually wear down these midgets and goals will come later in the game.

The stats read just like everyone expected. Caps dominate everything but habs manage to stay in the game with PP goal. Must stay out of box.

Posted by: jdove80 | April 15, 2010 8:00 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are dominating the flow of the game. If they can keep this up, they'll destroy the Habs. They have to get more rubber behind Halak, so he does not become their savior.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | April 15, 2010 8:00 PM | Report abuse

For me the strategy for the rest of the game is pretty simple: keep your emotions in check.

It's pretty obvious that their strategy is to cheap shot the hell out of us, and then get a PP when we retaliate.

Calm down, don't engage in their reindeer games, and the goals will come. When you're outshooting your opponent almost 4:1, they're not going to be able to sustain for 60 minutes.

I hope you're right joekk443. I'm not slighting Halak b/c he's a really good goalie and if not for him, we might be up by two. I agree, if we play like we did in the first and stay out of the box, we'll be able to score. They haven't done anything 5 on 5. If we keep taking penalties then that'll keep them in the game.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 15, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

Ovi played 8:37 in the first, second most minutes to Green and no SOG... how the heck did that happen? lol

Posted by: joek443 | April 15, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

i think the caps attitude when an opponent goalie stops 18 of 19 is not "why can't we score" - but "these will start going in". i really like their never give up attitude

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 15, 2010 8:03 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are too big, fast and skilled for these hard working Habs.

Posted by: Terptwin | April 15, 2010 8:03 PM | Report abuse

love the chat too and I thought this game was big enough for one but there is a chat after the game... but i'll be going to bed.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 15, 2010 8:03 PM | Report abuse

We aren't faster, overall, than the Canadiens, Terptwin.

We are definitely bigger though.

And Corvo's shot was anything but a blistering one. It was more of a soft, finesse shot that was perfectly placed behind a screened goalie.

Yes, I'm going to repeat the sentiment:

Geno, where's the chat?

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 15, 2010 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Either have the chat or don't post anything during the game. If someone had not said anything I would have had no idea there was a new post because I don't look for them during games unless there is an injury to post about.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 15, 2010 8:05 PM | Report abuse

lol, i had to laugh when i read that. Makes it sound like it was a laser from the point. He threw it on net and it squirted thru the screen set up by 2 forwards

The better play Corvo made on that goal was the keep-in a few seconds earlier when he pinched. And the play that ShaMo made in his own end where he first lost the puck and then hammered the guy who got the puck so he coughed it back up. Little plays..all factor in. That goal started way back in our own end.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 15, 2010 8:10 PM | Report abuse

So did the Habs slow down the game, cuz 2 mins, 2 blocked shots and 1 shot from the Habs and none from the Caps

Right now the Habs are just holding on for dear lif they have no offensive zone pressure at all. They want to just defend the Caps and hope for a PP. The key will be to not take offensive zone penalities.

its what drives me nuts about Semin, he didn't come to play tonight, he came to cherry pick. He's sticking his stick out there trying for a cheap intercept of a pass or a quick easy shot, he's doing none of the hard work you need all your players to do in the playoffs.

Chew them out for what?

Not finishing on their bazillion chances?

Sometimes you just get unlucky or a goalie plays well.

The Caps used an incredible amount of energy in the first 30 minutes and unfortunately only managed to score 1 goal.

They've played very, very well. It's only natural that the other team gets momentum at some point.

The Caps can play dump and chase, pass the puck through the nuetral zone. They are bigger and more skilled. They can win with cycling the puck. The pretty passing of the regular season may not be the way to beat MTL tonight. The Caps should dictate the play with their physical presence.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | April 15, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

this is why i wished we had drawn the Flyers, this would be a much better series to watch. Montreal doesn't challenge us, there's no real hatred there.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 15, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

You know....A nice 2-1 win against a tight checking team, coupled with a great night by Theo can be a real statement for game one....

Winning a tight one may make the Habs press a bit in the next game, which would lead to some more open shots....Their goalie has played well, but he ain't all that.

Posted by: TimDz | April 15, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Having said that, we're now in the danger zone.

We've decisively outplayed Montreal for the majority of the game yet they go into the 3rd with a tie score. They have to feel great about their chances.

This is anybody's game now. It could come down to a lucky bounce at this stage.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 15, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

If I was montreal I'd be very happy... as a Caps fan I'm not so happy. We're supposed to be so much better but Montreal is working really hard and the playoffs are a completely different animal. Hopefully the third is like our usual third. Going to OT in the first game wouldn't be so good.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 15, 2010 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Chew them out for letting the Habs take it to the Caps in the last half of the period. This is the playoffs if they are too tired to play in the first game then we are in very VERY big trouble. Chew Poti out for being too fancy and not getting the puck out of the zone. Chew Semin out for not shooting the puck. Chew them out for not shooting as much in the second. Yes, Halak has been great but look at the one goal. SOFT. Any shot on net is a good shot on net. Also make sure they stay out of the box in the third.

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 15, 2010 8:46 PM | Report abuse

problem with Corvo is, he can never win that 1 on 1 battle against most forwards. They're all stronger than he is , so he can keep up skating-wise, but they'll always control the puck against him. Which leads to goals, or penalties etc.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 15, 2010 8:46 PM | Report abuse

It didn't look like Montreal was the faster team early because we were playing at 110%.

Once our legs started to go after dominating for half of the game, Montreal's speed and skill started to show through.

I really don't see much to complain about. The Caps have had tons of chances but Halak has played well and we've been unlucky. Sure, we made some mistakes but we made about as few as you could ask for. No team is perfect.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 15, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

If 2 or 3 of our countless scoring chances slipped into the net, including the one by Backstrom that just took a flukey bounce in Montreal's favor, we'd be saying that the Caps are playing great.

The fact that they've dominated in chances but have just been a little unlucky shouldn't take away from their effort.

Sometimes you just don't get the bounces or a goalie plays very well.

If we come out in every game with that energy and determination, I'll be fine with any result.

It was only natural that there would be a lull. No team can play that hard all game long. The Caps made an effort to jump out to a comfortable lead and on most nights, with that effort, it would be 3 or 4 to 1.

Now, we need to just play smart and hope for some good fortune.

He looks like he is more aggressive here and that could make him very dangerous.

True but unlike Green he gets back quick when he does pinch.

blackhole

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 15, 2010 9:36 PM | Report abuse

Fresh ice for the Canadiens and a minute and a half of PP time to start OT.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 15, 2010 9:37 PM | Report abuse

well i guess the post disappeared...

there's so much parity in the league... not surprised with all the upsets. I don't feel good about their PP continuing in the OT... I sure hope Ovie is better in game 2.. well hopefully he gets a shot, that'd be a start.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 15, 2010 9:38 PM | Report abuse

post went whacko....

5 on 5 OT right?

Posted by: TimDz | April 15, 2010 9:39 PM | Report abuse

I can't post anything now???

2nd most effective power play in the NHL on the fresh ice.

Crap.

Posted by: youaresquishy | April 15, 2010 9:40 PM | Report abuse

We have 41 shots on goal... Halak is tough. That's why I didn't want Montreal.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 15, 2010 9:40 PM | Report abuse

The way we let Gomez just drift through the neutral zone and than ultimately to the net to finish the play was the definition of a complete defensive breakdown.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 15, 2010 9:40 PM | Report abuse

rachel: you need to be a tad more positive...PLEASE? for wtf?

Posted by: TimDz | April 15, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

TimDz:
yes 5 on 5... after the PP is over

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 15, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Short-handed goal anyone?

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 15, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Well, I guess the key to Game 2 is to score goals. Probably not much more involved than that.

Posted by: CDon | April 15, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

OK, that's weird--how can a whole thread just disappear?

But as BB said earlier to all of us Caps fans, "Have faith."

LET'S GO CAPS!!!!

Opposing team with a power play in overtime. sounds way too familiar. I knew our last PP that we didn't convert was gonna come back to bite us. Verizon center ice is AWFUL. I bet players will complain about that after the game.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 15, 2010 9:42 PM | Report abuse

I didn't want the Canadiens either, plus I didn't want the Flyers to make it into the playoffs, so I was rooting for the Rangers to win that last game against Philly, which would've meant Caps could've been beating up on the Rangers right now, but the Rangers lost in the shootout.

I'm just really pissed.. going to montreal with a split won't be good.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 15, 2010 9:44 PM | Report abuse

the Caps had 41 shots but Halak had a clear view of about 39 of them...

Posted by: joek443 | April 15, 2010 9:44 PM | Report abuse

I wonder if Alex tweaked a groin down the stretch? That seems to be the main thing that has slowed him down over the years.

Somehow the missing thread has reappeared--and now there's a new one; recap of the third period, apparently. (Thank goodness I'm watching this at home, where the beer's already paid for.)

Here we go!! Let's go caps!!

Posted by: guer_j | April 15, 2010 9:45 PM | Report abuse

Going into the last day it was either Habs or Rangers. Did anybody really want to face Lundquist? I know Halak has been great tonight but who between the two is more often going to steal a series? Ovechkin and Semin are both having very poor games especially Ovechkin. That won't happen for the entire series. Even if we do lose this one we can still come back and win in 5 or 6. If Halak has a bad game then the Habs will have to answer questions about if we will be seeing Price in the series.

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 15, 2010 9:47 PM | Report abuse

I think Halak has been good but not game-stealing good. The Caps have not been able to move the puck from side-to-side to get him out of position. Almost all of the Caps shots were closely contested by defenders. I think it is more a question of good team defense by the Habs.

I wanted the Caps to face Lundqvist. Lundqvist doesn't like playing the Caps.
