Capitals trail Canadiens, 2-1, after first period

Despite an aggressive start by the Capitals to open Game 2 against Montreal, , they found themselves down 2-0 on just two shots.

The first goal came off the stick of Brian Gionta, who beat starting goalie Jose Theodore from just above the left faceoff circle one minute into the game. The Canadiens followed that with a goal from Andrei Kostitsyn, who had defensemen Mike Green and Jeff Schultz retreating and fired a shot between the starting pair that Theodore failed to stop.

Capitals Coach Bruce Boudreau quickly pulled Theodore in favor of Semyon Varlamov, who stopped the first shot he faced, drawing a thunderous applause.

Feeding off that energy from the crowd, the Capitals got a turnover in their defensive zone, and Tomas Fleischmann delivered a pinpoint pass to Eric Fehr, who was skating in alone on Halak. Fehr put the shot high and beat Halak at 10 minutes 21 seconds, and the Capitals were back in it.

The Capitals opened the game as the clear aggressor, challenging Halak early and often. The pressure did not yield a goal in the first few minutes, but it underscored how important it was for the Capitals to dictate the pace from the outset.

Washington outshot Montreal 13-8 in the period. Over both first periods of the opening two games of the series, the Capitals outshot the Canadiens 32-15.

And despite the shot advantage, the Caps have mustered just two goals in those two opening periods.

Posted by: CDon | April 17, 2010 7:49 PM | Report abuse

Oh yeah, and the Canadiens have scored three in the two first periods.

Posted by: CDon | April 17, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Unless Varley gives up two goals in two shots, he'll be playing the rest of the playoffs, which hopefully extends past game 4 in Montreal.

I got wayyyy to keyed up for the playoffs...if we fizzle out this quickly we will be the laughing stock of the NHL.

"Not in a scoring groove"

oh dear. of course it fails us when it really matters. Are these guys nervous or something? Holding their sticks too tight? What explains for this start to the playoffs beside crappy defense and PK?

Posted by: rachel216 | April 17, 2010 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Yes I totally agree. Nothing on Theo. He got us here. But maybe Varly comes through in the clutch?

This is slightly embarrassing that we are not really making the changes to our game as we move along. Sure we're hitting more, but the results are still the same. Our passing is WAY off and we can't get a clean pass out of our d-zone to save our lives. They are swarming around us like extras at the craft service table. (sorry inside joke, but trust me it applies)

Posted by: natresgroup | April 17, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

If the Caps fizzle out, they'll just be San Jose East.

Posted by: CDon | April 17, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Why wouldn't they be confident? They have a good game plan, matchups etc. and they are playing it to perfection with tangible results. I expect their locker room is quite happy right now. Not so the Capitals locker room.

It was a better second half of the first period...

Time to step it up BIG TIME in the second.

I say Semin and Ovi score in this period

Posted by: dglelite | April 17, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Are Semin and Backstrom going to be back next year? Seems like if we're going to win the Cup, we'd better do it this year....

I like Theo, but it's just not happening for him tonight. I don't know whats going on but if we lose this series, we really will be the laughing stock. Oh well, it's nothing Caps fans aren't use to. Even Ted "gets the joke."

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 17, 2010 7:59 PM | Report abuse

I do gotta say...

Watching the Detroit/Phoenix series, those players were FLYING AROUND for an entire 60 minutes, were finishing off every check check and were playing with such intensity.

So far, I have not seen that same kind of emotion and energy coming from the Caps consistently.

TIME TO RAMP IT UP!

LETS GO CAPS

Semin is tied up for 1 more year. We better sign Backstrom. If we don't then that would be the worst move of GMGM's career.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 17, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

I wouldn't be srprised if we did lose this series. The Canadiens have given us the most trouble out of any team this year. We definitely need to improve our passing as it has been atrocious lately.

We're not playing smart hockey. when they have the power play and we have the puck, we should just hold onto it for as long as possible until someone challenges us for the puck instead of shooting it to the other end of the rink.

Posted by: CDon | April 17, 2010 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Well they are definitely playing good defense but we're playing really dumb hockey. For example, we'll have two guys bunched right together on a fast break which makes it much easier for them to defend. We need to spread out more, pass better and get back on defense!

Posted by: Thundershock | April 17, 2010 8:14 PM | Report abuse

Wow. This is shaping up exactly like last year's Rangers series. Too bad Federov isn't here this year to save our bacon.

Posted by: wocoliz | April 17, 2010 8:15 PM | Report abuse

This is the worst passing I've seen this team display... the passing is so off and even Nicky is passing to the wrong team. PANIC TIME. We cannot score... we need Carey Price in Montreal's net. We gotta run at Halak, he is just way to comfortable. How many 10 bell saves has he had to make so far in the first game and in this game? Not many. Where are our second and third chances?

Posted by: rachel216 | April 17, 2010 8:15 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are only going to score in this series, it seems, if they're willing to take the puck through some defenders and straight to the goalie. The cutesy stuff isn't going to work. I don't even know where Knuble's been.

There you go again with the sloppiness in the defensive zone. No one pursued the puck behind the net. Knuble doesn't go after the puck, but he also doesn't stop the puck. It's about preparation, consistency and awareness. The Caps have none in good supply right now.

Hard to tell what team is the eight seed and what team is the first seed. You've gotta wonder if BB needs to take a different approach next season, in which he actually stresses defense, particularly from the forwards, because this loosey-goosey style of hockey just doesn't cut it in the playoffs.

We got away with bad habits in the regular season.

You can't reprogram the team halfway through the first round of the playoffs.

We don't do the little things well... even offensively.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 17, 2010 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Jaffe was right with that comment: It's impossible to reprogram the Caps for the playoffs because what made them successful in the regular season doesn't work in the postseason, especially when the Canadiens don't take penalties.

What is it with these players? Are they scared? They wilt under pressure. No one has been good in the playoffs. I can't believe we went through an amazing season to have this happen. We all thought this would be a long playoffs but it isn't gonna happen.

BB is getting so badly outcoached by Martin.

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 17, 2010 8:27 PM | Report abuse

The players are getting outplayed, but BB is getting severely outcoached, as well. It seems like Martin has a game plan against the Caps. It seems like BB has no game plan for Montreal. Or if he does, it involves turning over the puck in the neutral zone.

Posted by: CDon | April 17, 2010 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Boudreau doesn't appear to teach details.

We've always been a high risk/high reward team.

When you play like that, those high risks can burn you.

We can't make simple passes because we're constantly looking for the home run play.

We have no patience and try to force things constantly. It's predictable and Montreal is just waiting for us to do the same things over and over again and take it back the other way.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 17, 2010 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Our best players are not even making any impact. They are playing like individuals now. How sad is this... almost every series was tied up yet the President's Trophy winner will be down 2-0 heading to Montreal. Wow we're screwed.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 17, 2010 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, BB is turning it over at mid rink. These are professionals and they can't move the puck across the red line?

Posted by: furious50 | April 17, 2010 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Caps are just undisciplined and unprepared. This was, in many ways, a must-win game. Or failing that, a badly needed win. That means you have to come out hard, disciplined and prepared. And this is what we get to watch? Makes you wonder about their mental makeup.

This is utterly laughable. I hope i eat my words but until this hockey team learns the difference between the regular season and the playoffs - they won't go anywhere. That 3rd goal was an absolute joke. You tell me how one guy skates in front of our net with 4 guys around and nobody crushes him. Instead he gets the puck and puts it in. That goal right there is the defining point as to why the Caps do not know how to play playoff hockey. This team does not know how to win. Period. Bob Woods needs to be fired. It's only apparent he's coaching this team defense to skate backwards and not stand up AT ALL. I said it last night - they keep doing it so obviously they're being coached to do it.

Oh guess what - we deflect it into our own net but we can't put it in their net. Hmmmm. Hahahaha. Break out the brooms Montreal.

Why is Semin out there on the PK? GET RID OF HIM! I would sit him in game 3 in favor of Walker. Go ahead and say I am crazy, but I would rather have a guy guy that wants it. He just doesn't.

Not sure what you do if you're the Caps. Last year, the Caps went down 2-0, but it was pretty clear they were outplaying the Rangers. This year, they're going down 2-0, but it's clear they're being outplayed by Montreal. So this game is over in five games, most likely, if not four. Sorry. I have zero faith right now.

Play Theo or Varly on Monday? Giant who cares. Won't matter because this team is so unprepared.

Nice to see Schultz can deflect pucks into the net. Maybe he can teach the forwards how to do that in their offensive zone.

Posted by: CDon | April 17, 2010 8:33 PM | Report abuse

i am embarrassed but in all honesty... i expected this. i said this earlier, what team is going to show up and now we know. it's certainly is not a 60 minute team.

i wonder what they are going to say they've "learned" for next year.

Caps are reelin boy - this is like watchin that Duk karate movie when that Asian antagonist was beating those opponents to death - the Caps are the twitching body that just got it's neck broken - or maybe watching a pit bull fight, where the weaker dog is thrashing around while blood is gushing from it's neck . . .

BB's system sucks for the playoffs -- the Caps are getting swept and it's time for a new coach who can coach a playoff system. This pondhockey bs is cute for the regular season, but blows chuncks for the playoffs.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | April 17, 2010 8:35 PM | Report abuse

Fire BB and Mcphee. Every fan knew what the team needed. Some grinding tough defensemen and a tough guy center. Worst defensive forwards in the league and noone every wants to take the body. Difference about being down 2-0 to the Rangers is the Caps played really well in those defeats. Caps will be swept.

Posted by: pkme | April 17, 2010 8:35 PM | Report abuse

Geno, we started panicking in the first period.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 17, 2010 8:35 PM | Report abuse

Well, everyone said it was going to be a short series, possibly even a sweep. Just hand the broom over the glass to the other bench. At least we have the President's Cup, which has about the same value as a mailing from the Publisher's Clearing House.

As tmac2yao said, defense and details are important. The Caps have neither. You can really see a difference in the energy and preparedness between these two groups of players.

That goal helps, for sure, considering how quickly it comes after the PP goal from Montreal. But too little too late, probably.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | April 17, 2010 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Big deal.

We're not scoring 5 goals on this team and even if we do, we can't play defense and do the little things for the remainder of the series.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 17, 2010 8:37 PM | Report abuse

There's the story of the game: A wide open net with a goalie buried beneath people, and the Caps can't put it in.

Posted by: CDon | April 17, 2010 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Playing like Sh!te tonight. The series ain't over though. Habs wouldn't have made the playoffs in the past 10 years at that point total. Their PP and goalie are the difference thus far.
Time to turn 2-1 SOG into a results.
Varly must start in Montreal. Can you imagine Theo's ghosts?
We need to do what we have done ALL season.

Posted by: CDon | April 17, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

4-2 not insurmountable. Caps will play a high-risk period, and if things go well, they can win. If they (circumstances) go the other way, score could end up 6-3.

Posted by: Satchelass | April 17, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

lol yea lets blame the ref's

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | April 17, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

(2) Bruce actually coaching defense

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 17, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

This has absolutely nothing to do with the refs folks. In order to get penalties, you need to work hard. The Caps have not done that this game, they have been firing shots from just inside the blueline, against a goaltender with a ton of skill and a ton to prove. The Caps needs to drive the net, move their feet in the corners, cycle the puck, anything to draw penalties; they won't just be given out for nothing.

Lest you forget, last year was the only year we one a series. That was with BB. Before that, we were young and got beat once playoff hockey came. Support your side! Some F's calling out "Johnnie come lately" fans. You sure you don't fit the description?

Seriously, if we can't play playoff hockey then we need to get a coach who knows how... Our defense is terrible, we just let them walk into our zone... WHY WHY WHY are we not standing them up at the blue line??

------------------------------------------

ANSWER: Because all 3 forwards are too gassed from forechecking to come back to support the D.

Posted by: floms | April 17, 2010 8:50 PM | Report abuse

You can pick at different players for their performance, but the problem is in the system itself.

Why can't they swich to a 1-2-2 forecheck and just play a tight game?

Their style right now is working agaist them.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 17, 2010 8:56 PM | Report abuse

This team lacks a player who will consistently take the body. Say what you want about Brashear, but when he was with Bradley and Steckel they were laying the body. They have nobody on the blueline except Erskine who hits, maybe Morrison. Erskine isn't quick enough for this series. If he wants to play further, this team needs to pick it up!

Posted by: robostop10 | April 17, 2010 8:57 PM | Report abuse

I know this year is different from last year, and Montreal is not the New York Rangers, but one win in Montreal could really save us the series like it did in game 3 last season. It took a couple games to motivate us and figure out Lundqvist, but we saw how easy these guys could play once they figured him out. Halak has very weak shoulder sides, and it we can get pucks up on that area we are more likely to suceed.

With that being said this is the Capitals, and if you're not new to following the team, you always have that bad feeling in the back of your head that something bad was/is going to happen.
