Caps 2, Flyers 1

Brooks Laich and Alex Ovechkin scored and the Caps held on against the Philadelphia Flyers to win their fifth straight away game, 2-1 -- Washington's longest road win streak since 2001.

Michael Nylander returned to the lineup in place of LW Donald Brashear, who suffered a sprained knee Tuesday night in Nashville. How'd Nylander do filling in for the tough guy?

Tarik will be back with a wrap-up sometime soon, so stay tuned.

Slump is now OFFICIALLY over. So says Crooksy.

Captain Clark is taking questions on Comcast: pgl@comcast.tv.

Posted by: crooks_c | March 12, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

That was a good game played by both teams.

Posted by: Greg S. | March 12, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Nylander played a weak game both offensively and defensively.

Posted by: Hazz | March 12, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Hate to say it, but Philly has a good team. Fortunately, we're better.

Posted by: Greg S. | March 12, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

In place of Brashear? I guess. At least Giroux can go back down once Fedorov takes his Zicam.

Posted by: Section117 | March 12, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

That's such BS. Nylander was one of the few crashing the net and digging the corners. He played OK.

Posted by: Greg S. | March 12, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, i don't buy that at all.

Nyls was all over the place, and his first couple shifts were great. I thought Nyls looked really good tonight, comparatively speaking.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

He was 1-for-9 in face-offs, which isn't a known strength of his, but I thought he played with fire tonight, relatively speaking.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 12, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

man people hate on nylander so much. give him a break he played a solid game. vets like nylander will come in handy in the playoffs

Hey Flyers fans who like to boo Ovechkin when he touches the puck: Assist, GW goal, defensive play of game, #1 star. Keep booing cretins.

Theo was awesome tonight. No doubt about that.

Pens going to another SO.

Columbus really blew it. A 3-0 lead for them is like a 4-0 or 5-0 for the Caps. They were at home, too.

It's up to Malkin to keep the SO going.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 12, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

JT Was the man tonight. Had a great game tonight. It hurts to say it, but so did Erskine and even Schultz. They both played good games tonight and last game, too. Since Erskine's concussion he's played pretty good defensively. Must have had some sense knocked into him. I just hope this continues. I really do.

Posted by: Greg S. | March 12, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

And Malkin is denied.

Jackets win.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 12, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Great, great grind-out victory.

Just a thought I had coming into this game, which was reinforced tonight:

It's the second game in three in which Ovie has scored with Laich on the ice with him. I'm wondering if at some point they should be on the same line. Laich always hangs around the net and is more of a grinder/power forward than Kozlov. Remember Ovie played with Clark in his first couple of years and Clark had a 30-goal year as a result.

Posted by: donknutts | March 12, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

nice

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 12, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Theo made some great saves tonight. If he keeps playing like this, we'll be OK in net. I just hope we see Neuvirth for one of the back-to-back next week, no need to overwork Theo.

Posted by: sirbobalew | March 12, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

adding to my last post, I also wouldn't mind seeing Varly for one of the back to back if he's ready to go.

Posted by: sirbobalew | March 12, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

That was a great hockey game by both teams. They played with the fire and intensity of a playoff game. Theo was awesome, so all of you who wanted Backstrom or someone else at the deadline I hope you realize how dumb that would have been. Theo wants to take this team to the promise land almost as bad as Ovie to prove everyone wrong.

Nyles also played well tonight, whoever voted no at the top something is wrong. His line drew the penalty that got us the first goal of the game. He crashed the net on what should have been a goal in my opinion but it wasnt. He had a number of passes to the point which generated shots on goal and rebound opportunities. Did he stink in the faceoff circle, yeah. One bad state for him.

Putting Semin up on Ovie's line tonight was a brilliant move, although I don't recommend it consistently. It forced the Flyers D to loosen up just enough so they both had more open ice, rather than being able to focus on each of them when on different lines.

Great win, keep it up into Saturday.

Nylander had a decent game, but he needs to earn his paycheck, period!

Posted by: mikebrady1 | March 12, 2009 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Props to JT for another solid game. I'm not gonna lie, all that scrambling in the crease still gives me agita BUT credit due.

On Ovie again: This was his best game in a while. He scored against Pittsburgh and had a nice goal against Nashville but he seemed a little off his regular self. He was on fire tonight, everywhere, hustling, back-checking, shooting...the Ovie we know.

Posted by: donknutts | March 12, 2009 10:00 PM | Report abuse

No denying he needs to earn the paycheck. I'm just not throwing him out right now. He's not worth the money we're paying him, but he's better than most of the call ups at this point.

That no goal against him should never have been. That was a good goal. Nylander was checked into the goalie. He was in a great spot on the ice and paid the price for standing there.

Posted by: Greg S. | March 12, 2009 10:04 PM | Report abuse

This was a pretty clean game with one exception. I didn't even notice it until they replayed it during the postgame show, but Riley Cote egregiously stuck his knee out at Semin on that one rush where Semin fell awkwardly and briefly looked injured. When I slo-moed it on tivo, Cote could clearly be seen with his right knee jutting out toward Semin's knee, and Semin changed direction just in time to make it a glancing blow instead of a direct knee-to-knee hit.
In other words, it looked like a cheap, dirty, intent-to-injure play, and only Semin's skating ability saved him from needing major reconstructive knee surgery.
F you Cote.

Nylander had a good game compared to his typical play this season but I'd put several players ahead of him in terms of the stars of the game.

Ovechkin, Theo, Semin, Laich, Fehr...

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 12, 2009 10:43 PM | Report abuse

Theo was outstanding tonight and got us the win. This is the kind of goal-tending we need and he delivered. If he continues on this streak, we will be unbeatable.

Too bad the Devils also won tonight or we would have reclaimed our #2 position in the conference. But, hey, we cracked 90 and the distance between us and Boston and San Jose is narrowing.

Great game.

Hello All!

Just got back from the 'ol watering hole for the game, and it was nice to see the locals gathering to support our boys.

Yes, Philly is a good team and so are we so when we don't play up to our capabilities like a few games back, it is all the more frustrating I know.

You guys and gals notice whenever we have abit of a shake up in the line up by callups, we play pretty good? Just a thought. Also, Jose did play well no doubt, but he keeps getting out of position and makes situations more dramatic then need be. Again, just a thought.

Anyway, anytime we beat Philly it is a great win.

Go Caps!!!

one of the best games I've seen in a while.
Steckel has played better of late, since ive called him out, and it's good thing he's hearing the call.
Erskine has looked good.
Nylander did not interfere. last playoffs, flyers ran huet over and over. now, a player gets shoved over the goalie and the goal is dissallowed. WTF?
Nylandr played much better. He was very involved.
Theo, Ovie, Semin, Laich, Kozlov,Fehr, flash, nylandr, erskine, green, poti, in that order.

Excellent game by the Caps. A must win effort. Two in a row on the road! I'll admit that I was beginning to lose faith last week when the Caps were slumping at home but well done!

Great takeaway by Semin leading to Ovi's goal. Great defensive play by Ovi to stop the potential breakaway goal by the Flyer's.

This is the first game where I can remember where back to back "goals" for each team were disallowed. Flash is certainly having his "goals" getting taken away.

The goal was disallowed because of accidental interference from Nylander (pushed down, really easily by D-man) on Biron (goalie) in the goal grease. Sometimes refs dont notice it, like one time when Toronto scored their second goal against Caps. But if a player goes to a goal grease, than he should be ready to "stand his ground" and not get pushed down easily.
Philly scored their goal during the bad change of Nylander line by the way. Also Nyls did not shoot the puck at all, AGAIN. Its simple - you can’t score if you don’t shoot!

P.S. Theo is improving and hope he continues and carries this to PO.

Posted by: Hazz | March 13, 2009 7:16 AM | Report abuse

I thought Nylander looked pretty average. He lost faceoffs and missed a great opportunity on a centering pass from the right wing that hit him on the tape and rolled off of his stick. I want him to play better but he didn't look great. In all fairness, when you've been scratched from the lineup as often as he has lately, you lose your rhythm not to mention your confidence. Give him another chance and let's hope for the best. We own him for the rest of the season.

Posted by: Digitalman08 | March 13, 2009 8:59 AM | Report abuse

Ted ought to use his considerable video producer influence to personally send to the league the tape of Cote jutting out his knee to try to deliberately shelve Semin for the season. There is no place for that in hockey and the league ought to know about it. Christianson's post was really right. Only Semin's skating skill eluded a season-ending injury caused by that goon. Let's hope Brash gets another dance with him. That will get me out of my chair.

Posted by: JoeTink | March 13, 2009 10:30 AM | Report abuse

My understanding is that compared to how he's been playing, last night, Nylander played remarkably better. For him to exceed our expectations deserves all the credit and praise people are giving him and should be giving him. I'm not sure how all the negativity that some people show on here about the guy even matters. The guy gets a bad rap often enough for the bad stuff that happens but when he gets even a remotely good game out of himself, you guys still wanna' focus on the negatives? Give it a rest, people. He's still a Washington Capital and until he's not, we should be supportive of the guy when he contributes. Last night, from my understanding, he did. Great job, Nylander!

On to the Hurricanes....
