BOO-YAH!!

Semin's the man!!!

WOO HOO the theme and song for game 5: Stayin Alive. Now back to Philly for Game 6.

Observations:
Tom Poti gets credit for making some big plays on defense.

HUET HUET HUET HUET HUET...he's settling in...and getting more focused. Love the blocker into Upshall's face. Here have a waffle LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL :)

That shot from Semin on the third goal has been there all series and finally he shot it. Too many times the player is looking to make the pass. THREE GUYS IN FRONT OF BIRON...you think he saw that goal? LOLOL. Fantastic and gritty effort. They were gassed in the third and got careless again with coming out of their zone. Gotta clean it up.

Back to Philly: They need to come out not feeling intimidated anymore. They have to come out throwing the body around early in the game. ICE BREAKERS GOAL SHAKERS. Kudos to the Caps fans.

THE ONLY RED SEA WEST OF THE ATLANTIC :)

Nice game Caps (from a flyers fan) good effort, exciting game.

Looking forward to Monday night...Just curious where's all the complaining about the officiating today? Kudos for capitalizing on your chances...but I guess when "your" team gets 3 consecutive PP's when the momentum was clearly shifting qualifies as a well-called game.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 19, 2008 4:00 PM | Report abuse

Exactly -- thats how being a fan works.

@ Flyers Fan,

Here we go, now you're going to cry about the penalties? What is there to complain about? All the penalties the Flyers took were legit. Nothing like the Kozlov interference call with 3 minutes left in the game. Give me a break.

great game by the caps! Fedorov took over this game for them... It took the flyers way too long to wake up... all the way till the third...
CAn't wait till game 6! I'm going and having another tailgating party if anyone here is going let me know!

Not complaining...I openly admit that the officiating has been mediocre at best for both teams. Caps played a hell of a game...

U - I hear you. I respect that.

Special teams decided this game again... I said I hated how it decided the flyers won in game 4 and i'll say it again I hated how it decided the game in game 5... Kozlov call was horrible and upshall call was horrible... let the boys play refs

Thanks Tess!! My brother did that last season but I forgot.

Posted by: uncatim | April 19, 2008 4:05 PM | Report abuse

The Flyers got punked today..ie out shot, out hit and out coached!! No other way to put it. That's 2 games in a row they have out hit and out played the Flyers now. We have the momentum and more importantly OV is back! Game 5 should be a dandy.

ouch update for the flyers.... Knuble out for the remainder of the series with hamstring injury... big blow to flyers

The Caps started to let off again in the 3rd period.

Let's hope they figure out how to maintain their sense of urgency.

I predict Ovechkin scores next game -- it's been too long.

Posted by: Jeff | April 19, 2008 4:15 PM | Report abuse

that kinda effort aint gonna get it done...even at home in a game 7...

unbelievable first period but they need to pack that intensity for 60+ mins. they completely stopped hitting in the 3rd period and were lucky to get outta there with the win...

youre still supposed to check people when youre on the power play...two people on the puck and the first guy takes the body...and when they get control of the puck you have to finish your checks...maybe the saving grace was that they did start hitting in the last few mins...get it out of the zone...get it in deep...go hit someone...nice!

play full contact hockey for 60+ mins...stop the turnovers and be responsible/accountable...stay out of the box...its a simple game boyz!!!

@Jeff

I hope it ends at 6...but I have to admit game-7's are exciting as hell!

Posted by: ChrisA | April 19, 2008 4:20 PM | Report abuse

The Caps held the Flyers to 11 shots on goal the first two periods, then "held" them to a mere 21 shots in the third.

Caps, next game(s), gotta play with that intensity for 60 minutes.

I can't believe NBC had Ovie at 2 hits given when he had at least 8 or 9 at that point.

Let's go, Caps!

Posted by: Jonathan | April 19, 2008 4:37 PM | Report abuse

@ our Philly fans

The goalie interference call on the Flyers was payback for Kozlov's call 2 nights ago. Both were totally bogus calls. Today, Green checked your guy into Huet.

The refs called a fair game. Not good. Not bad. Just fair.

The VC ice has claimed another skater. Early this season, it was Semin followed quickly by Clark. Obviously, Semin is back. Clark has been out almost all season. We've been moaning about the poor ice all year, but the owner of the building doesn't care about it apparently.

Great game by the Caps for 2 periods. Good game by the Flyers for 1.

Posted by: Greg S. | April 19, 2008 4:37 PM | Report abuse

OK, great game, lots of guts, what we've been expecting to see from the Caps . . . but what was with that penalty on Fedorov to go 2 men down? I suppose you can make that call (the NBC dolts talked about how that off-stick hand restraint used to be legal, but isn't anymore) at even strength, though a little ticky-tack given the spot on the ice and the play at hand . . . but when the Caps are already a man down?! What happened to the days when you had to actually assault a guy to get whistled when you're already on the PK in the playoffs?

Posted by: Magnus | April 19, 2008 4:43 PM | Report abuse

@ King Huet

Here's your dap. You told me two nights ago momentum had shifted to the Caps. You were right. I was wrong. Good on ya.

I didn't like how the third was played from the Caps perspective. But I liked that they were tougher in the defensive zone. They cleared the puck out of the corners a little better. Good pace to this one. Really favored the Caps.

Time to give some credit to the coaching staff, the Caps were finally able to figure out the Flyers forecheck and start getting into their passing lanes and create a lot of takeaways. Now they just need to keep it up like that for a full 60 minutes.

That's the graphic they showed. But the announcers replied that there were a lot more than that. They asked if he had to check guys into the 3rd row in order to get credit for a hit. Pretty funny.

I'm also glad that Mike and What's-his-face were razzing themselves and eachother. They're still idiots in my book, just not the first ones any more. They have a long way to go to get out of the DC Dog House. Mike may have sold Uncle Ted with his BS, but it'll take more than buying 2 Caps baseball caps for his kids to placate me.

Green had his best game of the series by far. He was excellent tonight

Posted by: GoUnited | April 19, 2008 4:48 PM | Report abuse

@ zamboni
It wasn't so much that they figured out the forecheck as it was the caps came out and checked the hell out the flyers... Flyers proved point when caps started to wear down and flyers started forechecking but it was tooo little too late.
Big thing the flyers lost was they were spread way too far apart. It's impossible to move a puck out of your end when players are staggered all over the ice... didn't change that until the third period.
I expect a very intense game 6 and a totally different look from the flyers.
Defense for the caps played much better for the most part of this game, until the flyers started sustaining pressure...
Game 6 should be awesome... Anyone wanna head down early and tailgate let me know!

Posted by: JEff | April 19, 2008 4:49 PM | Report abuse

@Gounited
I aggree with that... Green actually stayed back and played Defense and that was the best change he could have made

Posted by: JEff | April 19, 2008 4:51 PM | Report abuse

@828

Semin is playing with heart and enthusiasm. Yea, he turns it over way too much, but can you say you ever see him forechecking and hitting with as much zeal in the regular season as he has been in this series? I think he's really turned up his intensity... hopefully it translates into more execution and fewer TOs as the postseason progresses.

Posted by: Mother Russia | April 19, 2008 4:51 PM | Report abuse

I said 2 nights ago, that the best thing that happened in Philly is that they hammered Semin. I think that really woke him up to realize the cutsie plays won't work, but the hard driving, crash the net plays do.

Thanks Philly for waking up the Monster in Semin!

@Jeff
Thanks for the info. I'll check their site. Sorry to hear that about Knuble. That didn't look good on the replay. Another reason why I can't stand the ice at Verizon Center.

@828
Semin is all heart but he has to stop thinking he can stick handle all fancy everytime he gets the puck. He has that ability but he needs to take that shot more and more and more. A few times he's made that move and then he passes. Today he scores and nearly had another with the post. Just keep pumping the puck towards the net. Great stuff.

Posted by: Jonathan | April 19, 2008 4:56 PM | Report abuse

Just got back from the game at Verizon. Watching the last several minutes of the 3rd period was like watching your life flash before your eyes in slow mo. It was SCARY. The Caps played really tense and overwhelmed hockey in that 3rd period. Hope they don't do that again or Philly will get 'em. Nonetheless, minor heart attack aside, GOOO CAPS!!!

Just heard Philly's Upshall being interviewed on Comcast. He was complaining about Caps players "embellishing" to get calls to go their way. If that's not the pot calling the kettle black I don't know what is!! Every time Upshall gets checked he snaps his head back. In game 3 the refs called a penalty against the Caps because of his antics. However, when he did the same thing in games 4 and 5 the refs totally ignored. Frickin punk..your gonna need more than that bulls&#$@t to get your sorry teammates motivated.

Posted by: Moose33 | April 19, 2008 5:01 PM | Report abuse

I think if semin rags the puck in philly like he did today he will pay dearly with turnovers... Fedorov was the best player on the ice... played very simple and very smart
If the caps are going to win in philly monday they have to keep everything overly simple... the more puck ragging and deking they do into the zone the more likely it is they'll turn the puck over
That shot by Semin sure had eyes eh?
Biron has been playing great this series... very square and moving around his net great.
I expect a very different game on monday... I expect the flyers to really come after the caps early. I see the caps handling it hopefully and maybe we'll see some more OT!
HOPEFULLY I GET TO GO TO 2 OT GAMES THIS SERIES!!

Posted by: Jeff | April 19, 2008 5:01 PM | Report abuse

Semin is having a great series.

Federov had a great game today.

The Caps don't play well with a lead. They sit back way too much.

The way the team played in the 1st, I wouldn't be surprised if they got tired in the 3rd. They have to pace themselves or get a bigger lead next time and put it away early.

Posted by: Capfan1 | April 19, 2008 5:02 PM | Report abuse

Had to watch the game on an over the feed with terrible reception. Looked like a great first period and a half but we got WAY too tenative in the third. Still great overall effort, and god bless Semin. He is playing with some fire now and it is awesome to see.

The goalie interference call on hartnell was bull so I guess that makes up for the Kozlov call.

Lets give credit to the coaching staff for making the adjustments that have had a great impact over the last two games.

Can't wait for game 7. The phone booth will be crazy.

Just finished watching Comcast post-game sports coverage, they tapped in to the Philadephia coverage of the game, including a locker room interview with Upshall. In case anyone wondered if the Flyers were still sore losers, THAT hasn't changed either. Boo hoo, the referees are giving the Caps all the calls, not calling things they should, Caps are taking dives. Excuse me? Are we talking about the same games? After all the outrageous antics Flyers have gotten away with with impunity? If you're going to take on the persona of a club-wielding neanderthal, for God's sake have the courage to complete the role. Everyone knows they're bullies on skates, the pathetic self-delusional cry-baby follow-up just confirms it.

I hope Mike Wise heard this, I'd love to see what he would do with THIS.

Hi, Caps fans:

This Ranger fan hopes the Caps can win the series in 7 over a very good Flyers team.

One question: For anyone at Verizon Center Saturday, what were the fans chanting with about 3 minutes to go. I couldn't make out the words. (It wasn't the usual "Let's go, Caps!"

Thanks, and good luck Monday night, Ovie & Co.

Posted by: Garey G. Ris | April 19, 2008 5:19 PM | Report abuse

Honestly if that's the sentiment coming from the Flyers about the refs and complaining then you have to wonder if they're letting creep into their heads a little bit.

I loved watching Bradley give Prospal a shot right off the draw and Prospal threw up his hands and went after Bradley twice. It's called getting in their heads. Philly does the same thing. It happens year after year in the playoffs. All teams do whatever to nag each other.

The simple fact is this remains to be a battle that will continue in Philly on Monday. It will be fun to watch. Drop the damn puck already!!!!!!!!!! :)

i bet no rink south of the mason dixon line has the combination of building air conditioning plant and underice piping it takes to keep the ice decent in the third period of an afternoon game when the temp is near 80 outside. they built all the arenas with average winter temps in mind, not playoffs. the reason the montreal ice is always good, even in the playoffs, is it doesn't get this hot this early in montreal, and they spent the money to build the rink right when they built it.

Posted by: LL | April 19, 2008 5:43 PM | Report abuse

Great game today. Philly fans and Phlyers got a taste of their own cooking. Really - and whimpie Upshall having the nerve to talk abot embellishing??????

Geez Scottie; While you're at it, go ahead and complain about the two high sticks to Semin and one to OVie in the lasst game. Was that embellishment too???

He's probably got a bit of pain in that groin area from the look of his show off split in front of Green. Lucky for him, Greenie passed the puck instead of shooting for the Jewels. Scottie would be speaking through an interpreter and in a much higher tone.

That 2nd call for too many men on the ice was BS (game 4) and if you look at the replay, the caps player already had one foot in the box as the puck was touched. That nifty call led to the game-tieing goal.

So, the series SHOULD BE 3-2 Caps, not in favor of the the psychobabble pflyers from phillie.

Now we have a chance to serve up our just desserts. Bring on GAME 6!

Posted by: dogdaze | April 19, 2008 5:47 PM | Report abuse

Bruce, I remember reading a few years back that Dallas put the pipes about 6 inches apart at American Airlines Center, instead of the usual 8 inches apart, to help keep the ice better during spring hockey games. Not sure about other arenas in the South. I couldn't believe the number of odd bounces during Saturday's game.

Hope Monday's is as much fun -- and as nerve-wracking -- with Ovechkin scoring the winner in OT, of course!

What a game! No other sport can't match the emotional and physical intensity of the NHL playoffs.

From what I've seen on TV, the VC looked incredible tonight. It was an ocean of red, and shees, so loud. Maybe I'm biased but it seemed to me more impressive than WC.

I'm impressed on how the team improved on all fronts :)

Oh and that call on Fedorov was totally BS. Even the commentators had something to say about it, and these are NOT Joe B and Craig.

I too couldn't make what was shouted in the end... but it sounded good though :)

What did you guys think of Brodeurs hand shake antics at the end of that series vs avery?

Personally if i were Brodeur I would have broken Avery's Ankle during that rediculous stunt he pulled in that powerplay... but when the series is over the hand shake is key in the NHL.

Personally I hope the NHL fines Martin for that... It's classless and the handshake is what seperates our sport from all others...guys go out and kill eachother all series and when its all said and done everyones a good gentleman and good loser. It's about respect for the game with me. I don't care how much Marty hates Avery... that wasn't disrespecting Avery, in my mind that was disrespecting the Game of Hockey whether marty meant to or not...

Whats your guys take?

Marty shook everyone's hand in the line and when he got to avery he starred at him for a moment, then looked the other way and didn't shake his hand and moved to the next guy... It made me look very immature and classless and Avery looked visably upset by it and hate avery all you want... Personally I'd kill him if i had the chance, But thats the NHL Series handshake... You shake everyones hand

I have been to several NHL arenas and never felt the temperature that cold before.Talking to the local thrasher fan s, they all said it was the normal arena temp.for hockey games.Some of the fan came equiped with blankets.Maybe they need to turn the thermo down @ the booth!

Honestly I mean it shouldn't be that big of a deal, but in reality it is... This has to be a message sent down from the league that it doesn't matter what your stature is in this league NO ONE ABSOLUTLY NO ONE disrespects the game like that... Marty has really gone down in my books after last night... I always liked the guy (well loved to hate him) But thats something Above marty... the hand shake is the golden rule after playoffs

@Jeff, longtimecapsfan

Thanks :D. I can understand MB. I think if they had won te series, he would have stopped to talk to him and laugh about it, like "what the heck wast that??". Since they're eliminated, I can appreciate the being pissed off.

Posted by: mauree | April 19, 2008 6:16 PM | Report abuse

he's allowed to be pissed off... but THAT handshake is still above emotions... You shake everyones hand... THAT handshake is above everything that happened during the series... I dono that was a slap in the face to the game of hockey in my mind

Like I said in a earlier blog, now the pressure is on the Flyers. Pressure does funny things to teams. Biron is also awful in back to back games. Bring in on back home CAPS!

Posted by: LL | April 19, 2008 6:22 PM | Report abuse

I think MB was pissed about losing the series and wanted to "do" something. But the handshake is sacred, I agree he should have done it.

Posted by: FAT JACK | April 19, 2008 6:25 PM | Report abuse

Back to back games? Isn't the game on Monday?
I dono Biron has looked pretty good to me so far.
I don't think the pressure is any different on either team... If anything i think the flyers have more of an advantage coming back to the Wachovia Center and their fans... Keep in mind the Caps played their best game and were still unable to control the flyers offense up to the very end of the game and the flyers came with in inches/seconds of tying the game up and still managed to outshoot the caps (I'm not really sure how the hell that happened)

I expect to see a totally different flyers team next game and the closest game of the series to date. I expect the flyers to hit more and to have majority of the energy at the start of next game.
Losing Knuble is huge especially with the lack of brains by stevens in line up plug ins.
If it were up to me I'd Plug in Denis Telpeko (spelling)maybe even Downie, But I'm sure we'll see Cote

Both teams have momentum, because the flyers took over the game in the late 2nd and into the third despite taking penelties

and the Captials take momentum because they won with their backs to the wall...
THIS IS GREAT HOCKEY FOLKS! Let's soak in this series while we can, cause it's coming to a close within the next 5 days sadly. Here's hoping for a hell of a finish

Jeff/mauree:
After Avery's antics, I can't say that I blame MB. Besides, after the handshake incident, Avery said that people say he is unclassy, but then 'fatso' forgot to shake his hand. Yeah ... with comments like that, kinda think he deserved it. Keep in mind - this goes way back - Avery has been tackling and trash talking MB for a looooong time.

Boy, if Knuble really is out, that's huge for the Caps. Plus the boys seem to be fighting back, which is good (even Huet popped someone in the face). The Caps are playing their game now - I hope they keep it up! I am ready to go back to the VC! :-) I was happy to see it SO red and loud - I was afraid it would not be, but it just keeps getting better!!!

I'm not too sure that Avery was looking to shake hands, either. Still, it's the tradition in hockey, and one of the many things that sets the game miles above the rest. I really like that aspect of hockey. Spend up to 720 minutes trying to crush eachother, and then shake hands, say "great game" and "good luck".

Posted by: Chris | April 19, 2008 6:36 PM | Report abuse

@Jeff
Monday-Tuesday is back-to-back (if we win, that is).

The Caps were a bit tired in the final minutes - mentally and physically, while the Flyers had an edge. However, you can't base on that next game outcome, since the Flyers will want to start big this time. If the Caps match the intensity, then both team will be tired at the end.

Losing Knuble seems a big factor (he's crease agitator) but it can backfire if the Caps relax in the crease. Knowing the Caps *shows him the defribillator* that can happen.

Yeah - a couple of the folks with me said it was the best game they have ever seen. It was awesome!!! Now you have to make the trip for game 7! :-D

From nhl.com:

The Flyers will have to make do for the rest of the series without right wing Mike Knuble, who sustained a partial tear of his left hamstring late in the second period when he stumbled to the ice in a moment of indecision over whether to try to block a shot. Knuble had two goals and three assists during the series, including the game-winning score in double overtime of Game 4.

"I just kind of caught my heel and went down awkwardly," Knuble said.

As a new conspiracy theorist, I'm fully behind the post earlier in the day about the Caps.

Think about it, and you'll know it's true! The Cardiologists of greater DC need more business. They've hired the Caps to make close games and come-from-behind games and series.

I've never heard more sirens in my life than near the end of a Caps game.

Sad news on Knuble - but I won't beleive it until Monday's game. There was alot of news (disinformation) before game 2 that Briere was sick with the flu and would not play. Then there was the "Thorensen - out for the duration" emergency surgery story.

Both completely false, both players there live up-close and personal. Don't trust anything coming out of those Phillie press releases. More "shock and awe" to come. And now we have to listen to Stevens touting " we're gonna take contron from the drop of the puck . . . . "

Well Johnnie boy, we'll have to see about that!

you can see the Avery v. Brodeur video here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X65IE-nNnq0&NR=1

The description is not quite right; there was no staredown. They just walked by each other and you can't tell who refused to shake hands with who.

You do see Avery laughing about something, though.

Posted by: Victor | April 19, 2008 8:09 PM | Report abuse

It's fine that MB didn't shake Avery's hand. What Avery did was an embarassment for the league (hence the immediate rule change) and showed the poorest sportsmanship imaginable. When Avery left LA, his own teammates were trying to fight him. The guy is definitely the kind of pest you want on your team, but he is a scumbag and, frankly, if I'm one of the greatest goalies in NHL history, I wouldn't shake his hand either.

This isn't the first time guys haven't shaken hands. It's a non-story, just confirmation of the story of their bad blood. You can expect some serious retribution by the Devils against Avery next year. As someone once said, you have an entire career to get back at a guy. I suspect Brodeur's stick will demonstrate that sometime this fall.

I was pleasantly surprised by NBC's covergae of the game. Of course that is because I was watching the game at the bar at the Rainforest Cafe in Downtown Disney with the volume off. I did not have to hear them!

Thoughts:

* Semin was amazing.
* Pleasantly surprised by the lack of Flyers fans and noise from the crowd (way to go!!).
* Call on Upshaw was just like Kozie's in Game 4. Neither should have been called.
* What the hell was the call on Feds on the PK? Ridiculous!

Take it one shift, one period, one game at a time boys and you can do it.

So excited because I am coming home and will see Game 6 and Game 7 in the comforts of my house.

When we get to the secound round, I will be down for at least one game.

Let's Go Caps!

Posted by: CT Caps Fan | April 19, 2008 8:59 PM | Report abuse

Things we have discovered the past 2 games.

1. The enigma that is Semin, is now the skilled player with a some cojones. Who knew he had it in him, I didnt. All I wanted from him was 7 good minutes of hockey, well we are getting more than that from him. Maybe we can remove the word "Other" from his name. He is playing great.

2. Backstrom is not afraid, just not really big. Dont get me wrong, we'll never mistake him for Dale Hunter but the kid is a great player and has actually stuck up for himself on more than a few occasions.

3. Ovechkin isnt scoring, but the team has taken up Alex's personalty and its showing big time. I saw 5 straight finished checks in 5 seconds in the 1st period.

4. Eminger. Thats all I'm going to say. Eminger.

5. Huet, we already knew he was good, but it pains me to think what could've been had we played the way we have the past 2 for the first 3. Clear the crease and let him steal a game for you.

6. BB, tweaked the lines and it worked. I was one who thought just tweaking the lines wouldnt work. Humble pie is best served warm with a scoop, um make that 2 scoops of Breyers Vanilla.

7. Punk the Flyers and they will wilt.

i think giving laich and fehr recognition/ time motivated other players to play well (e.g. real checking, going to goal). ovie
has always played like a role model but the distribution of playing time is one of the biggest motivator for deciding how teams play.

Posted by: on ice | April 19, 2008 9:46 PM | Report abuse

@Willy
Short answer... yes, they can.

BUT and this is a big "But"
the playoff code is simple... the playoffs don't really get underway in a series until a team loses at home... the flyers have yet to lose at home...
I think philly might be sort of a sleeping giant here and were struggling through some Overtime hangover. I think you saw the old flyers team we've seen this whole series in the third period.
I think the key is that this is a flyers team that really honestly seems to feed off of their crazy rowdy crowd.
I think that the flyers are going to really pressure the caps D next game and go after them and in this series so far that hasn't boded well for the caps cause they tend to turn the puck over in their own zone...
That all being said I have no idea who comes out on top though... I think the caps have a chance if they keep their game plan simple and limit their turn overs on defense... On offense they have to keep finishing their checks on timmonen and try to wear down the flyers D. They have to attack every chance they have with smith and modry on the ice and keep shooting.
I expect a much tighter game.
Sure the caps have a chance willy but I think this is going to be a very tough game for the caps... the toughest game they have played this year... if you're a caps fan expect the flyers to control and dictate much of this game i think... Today was a tough game for the caps and its the worst game the flyers have played this series and they still outshot the caps and it came down to the wire... I think the knuble injury hurts the flyers, but won't prevent them from getting to the net... Umberger will move back to that line with carter and upshall and Thors will move back with richards and Lupul.
It's going to be a hell of a game though, thats for sure... make sure you record this one boys!

Posted by: Jeff | April 19, 2008 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Anybody remember when Keith Jones played for the CAPS? I think he played for the Flyers as well.

"Marty shook everyone's hand in the line and when he got to avery he starred at him for a moment, then looked the other way and didn't shake his hand and moved to the next guy... It made me look very immature and classless and Avery looked visably upset by it"

Good. That dude is a complete @$$hat.
There's no rule saying you have to shake hands. There have been a lot of guys who didn't shake hands. Most of them aren't pleasant individuals, like Bully Smith and Tiger Williams. Since Avery tried to make a mockery of the game with his stunt, why should Brodeur give him any respect? Tradition be damned, that guy broke unwritten rules and expected even an ounce of respect? Avery should STFU.

I've always loved the underdog which is why it makes it hard for me to root against the caps. You have to love the battle between OV vs the big bad flyers D... it's been great... Timmonen is by far the best player in this series so far.

The boston ending was best ending ive seen in a game in a long long time. On to game 7 on monday! Who knows what will happen now! two great games monday now... Bettman must be loving this... Great hockey on TV for the last 2 monthes now... this is some of the best hockey i've seen ever in my life and more drama then ive ever seen as well
You know there is one Caps player I've been rooting for though... I really like watching Brash play... I know he's a former flyer, but man that guys really not very skilled and is just working so hard to play hockey. he's really earning his ice time right now and has not been a liability once yet.

Jeff

In many respects we outplayed the Flyers in Game 4 in their building and some might say deserved to win. The key is that they learned how to play to win in this type of series. It will be a good game, but I do not think that philly will have their way with us just because their coach says they will. First 10 minutes are always the key, but I believe that the Caps have one important thing in their favor:

They aren't supposed to come back down 3-1 just like they weren't supposed to make the playoffs. Immediate history is on their side.

Is it a wishful thought as a Caps fan to say I think we will force a Game 7? Maybe, but I also believe they believe they have the upper hand.

Too bad two days keep us from that game.

Jeff, I think you should start to charge for your advice & insight. I agree , the CAPS are intimadated by the Philly Faithful

Posted by: Willy | April 19, 2008 10:00 PM | Report abuse

One other thing that should be in our favor. OV is too great of a player to keep off the goal sheet for too long. We are still in this without his scoring. He will catch fire with at least 2-3 goals in the rest of this series, I believe. Is it in one game or in two? He will break out.

I agree - the Caps were the better team in game 4 ... they were robbed. They continued that play today. If they do it two more times, they take the series. Longshot? Maybe ... but then again, who ever thought that the Habs/Bruins would be 3-3?!? Heck, four months ago who ever thought the Caps would be in the playoffs? They can do it ... I believe!

Posted by: Boo! | April 19, 2008 10:04 PM | Report abuse

@Ct Caps fan
any time you play in your own building its an immediate advantage... Game 4 caps played well but so did the flyers... I think either team could have taken that game.
I think the caps have played good the last two games and I'm a person that never looks at the past as answer for series now. These are different teams with different players.
I know you don't expect the flyers to dictate play, which is why i said it. I'm just saying be prepared for it... there's a lot of veterans on this flyers team that are going to set the tone for the game i think.
I'm not saying that cause of stevens are you kidding me?! Stevens is an idiot! I would never say anything or relate/trust anyhting that comes out of that dunces mouth... in the coaching staff minus stevens flyers trust...
No one knows what will happen before the game... I expected to lose this game though. Caps were up against the wall and flyers weren't ready to play... that won't happen at home though.
Flyers didn't Test the caps D or forecheck till the end of the 2nd into the third and when they did there were a lot of turn overs and flyers got some PP's and some goals. Expect that from the begginning next game.
I could be wrong though I'm just a 21 year old hockey fan that likes to think he's knows a lot about the game.
I dono though... I expect a good game and a different flyers to show up... remember while the you guys spent the last two days saying the caps have responded well to let downs, this flyers club has had the same rally all season especially at the end of the season.
There is definatly no quit in that flyers club as shown today... Hopefully this game 6 see's some overtime... that'd make 2 ot games for me this series... I'd be so spoiled then... I said I thought this series would be decided in 6 games and didn't give you guys a clear winner... We'll see if my prediction was right

But the one thing that works against the Flyers in their building - and for the Caps - is that the Flyers fans turn on their boys in a heartbeat. If they don't come out strong and the Caps are the first on the board, the boo-birds will follow, which will bolster the Caps and get into the heads of the Flyers. Suddenly the 7th man is on the other team ...

Posted by: Boo! | April 19, 2008 10:11 PM | Report abuse

@Boo!
ehhhhh..... game 4 flyers were down in most of that game and the fans were still very very loud... and then they got a PP and the fans went nuts and the team scored... People keep saying this is a team that responds to their crowd... I think the booing actually makes players like Coburn and richards play harder cause they want to impress their home crowd... it's kinda been like that all season... We'll see though... 1 goal game crowds in the game 2 goal game crowds in only if the teams playing hard but if the flyers are getting out played you're right...

The Flyers have benefited from many bad calls against the Caps in this series. The Fedorov penalty which resulted in a 5 on 3 (and a Flyers goal) should have never been called. Especially in a playoff game. The contact was questionable to begin with and it was well behind the play. The Flyers are complaining about bad calls after getting a 2-man advantage for THAT? Bad calls are going to go both ways but at least the Caps earned their 5 on 3.

Posted by: Boo! | April 19, 2008 10:30 PM | Report abuse

Interesting piece by Tarik. Key point in the last sentence. All things even out:

One game after the Capitals grumbled about the officiating, Stevens took exception with the way yesterday's game was called by Dennis LaRue and Kevin Pollack.

The Capitals had six power plays (and converted two), including three straight in the third period as Philadelphia attempted to rally from a one-goal deficit. The Flyers had three, scoring on one of them.

"There's an old saying, the squeaky wheel gets the grease," said Stevens, who seemed most upset about the goaltender interference call on Upshall at 7 minutes 47 seconds of the third period. Upshall appeared to be pushed into Cristobal Huet by Capitals forward Viktor Kozlov.

"I can't fault Upshall," Stevens added. "He was just going to the net on a scoring chance. It looked like he tried to stop. There's no question you get short-handed, and it ends up being the difference in the game."

On Thursday, the Flyers enjoyed seven man advantages, including one in the final minutes of regulation when Kozlov was whistled for goalie interference. Washington had four power plays.

I have no idea what you're talking about... but allright sounds like you guys had a fun time. What happens in a rink stays in a rink
@deadkings
I think both teams have suffered from bad calls... I've watched other series and none of the other ones are being called this poorly... it really stinks to be honest... I hate when special teams decides games
@Boo
NBC was ok today... typical mainstream hockey coverage though... Piere looked like an idiot again...Emmerick did play by play so he's always good, after that it was typical stupid NBC hockey... I miss CBC and Don cherry (at least he was funny to look at)
And right now in america I miss ESPN and Gary Thorne (despite the fact that he miss pronounces everyones name and I think he might be drunk haha jk jk)

@ Boo!

I couldn't listen to another NBC broadcast, so I fed 107.7FM through the PC and listened to Steve Kolbe. It's a pretty good experience...if you can live with the delay. You get some enhanced Verizon Center sounds such as the arena announcer after penalties and goals. I don't get 107.7 FM very well through the stereo where I live but I would imagine that playing through the radio would eliminate the delay.

BTW, I like hearing Steve Kolbe say "he SSSSSCCCCOOOOOORRRRRRRRESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!" after a Caps goal!

I'm ok with Emmrick, but he's been going down hill the last couple of years... he has a great voice but he gets involved with convorsations during game play too much... I wish these guys realized that none of us care about anything they're talking about amongst themselves... we just wanna hear the game called while it's being played...
@ Boo
Honestly I wanna see Don Cherry In America... I think you guys would love that guy.... he's soooo over the top its amazing... the things that come out of his mouth are hilarious

I miss the ESPN days too but Gary Thorne was a complete loser. I can't figure out why some posters on this board like him. Mike Emmerick is another that I could go without ever seeing again.

@Deadkings08
We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Emerick and Thorne are two of the best in the broadcast business. Their voices are unique and bring excitement to the game. On a national level they're that good.

There are many good announcers out there. Don't get me wrong. But those two I wouldn't complain if I was watching a game and they did the play by play.

From a local standpoint - of course it's not the same without Joe B. and Locker.

Posted by: Jonathan | April 19, 2008 11:05 PM | Report abuse

I'm with Boo!, I like Joe B on the play by play. Although Joe's never played in the NHL, at least he knows and loves the game. He's a novice goaltender and I've seen some footage of him on the ice. He gets some national coverage on Versus and does a fine job IMHO.

Besides Emmerick and Thorne both having annoying voices (and don't get me wrong-I can get past voices with Craig L.), both can't wait to jump inside of the star of the moment's jock until the momentum shifts and then they're into the next one. To my knowledge, neither have strapped on ice skates before and I think that has to tell you something.

I know everyone here is pissed off at Milbury and McGuire from last weekend...and rightfully so. But I'll also give them some credit, it did seem like they were looking to reconcile today after the things they said last week. They mentioned several times how much the fans at the Phone Booth were rocking and how much it meant for the Caps momentum. They also sort of joked about McGuire's estimation from last week.

Another thing, I know the ice was complete garbage today, but I think that Knuble would have injured himself regardless of how the ice. He sort of got caught in between keeping himself up and diving to block the shot, that'll catch your leg everytime. It's sort of like how when you're skiing and about to fall and you try to adjust yourself by standing yourself up but instead you just end up torquing your knee and tearing your ACL.

Posted by: nhcaps | April 19, 2008 11:26 PM | Report abuse

yeah knuble's probalby lucky the ice is bad, had he caught it on hard ice it coulda been bad.

Ah now that was a great game!! Semin is probing to be a playoff contender, a clutch, viscous badass whose willing to lay it all down. I love it. The Semin shirt I bought is really paying off.

Upshall is playing psych with the media. Whatever. He had a rough game and thought he was being taken advantage of. The tables turned; now its individual Flyers that are being targeted. Prospal was neutralized. Knuble was, uh, neutralized as well. Never know who its gonna be. Could be Brash, could be Knuble, could be the goalie coach, anybody. A wry smile crossed my face. I thought, "is being satisfied the same as cheering?" I sincerely hope is rehab goes well. But I can't say i'm sorry to see him gone.

Avery has mad skills and has been nothing but an asset to NY since he arrived. That said, he's a big tool. What he did crossed the line and he has to learn to determine where the line is for himself. There was no rule because it was understood. Apparently Avery doesn't understand and thats why Brodeur didn't shake his hand. Rightfully so. He loves the game, he lives the game but he doesn't respect the game.

@828: After game 4 I told my wife I believed and I thought the Caps had it figured out. I predicted they would win game 5. I think this team, if they remain the team we've seen the past two games, can come back from a 3-1 deficit to take the series. I do. I believe it a 150%.

@ Jeff: If you really antagonized McGuire like that then I salute you. He would have dismissed it from a Caps fan but he must be pained terribly that Philly fans hate him. He tries so hard to make them like him, sad sorry sack that he is.

Semin, you rock. So do yo Brash. Two best players of the series, followed by Fedorov.

hahaha- I really really hate that guy. I do. He's a total wanker. During the Olympics he was baiting the Canadian womens hockey team into talking trash about the Americans. They wouldn't do it but he kept pressing. it was akward and totally unprofessional. Now, don't get me wrong, i'm not a suit nor do i fall into line if you know what I mean. But he;s meant to be impartial and objective and show some class. Instead he acts like a fool, repeatedly. He's an arrogant, egomaniacal tool that has to make everything about himself. Talking to players skating by him between commercials, like he's part of the game.

Maybe I dislike him too much. I mean, i don't know that guy, right?
