Caps acquire Scott Walker from Carolina

GM George McPhee has made his first move of the day, acquiring veteran forward Scott Walker from Carolina in exchange for a seventh round pick, I'm told.

Although it's fair to wonder how much the 36-year-old has left in the tank, my first impression is that he'll add a level of leadership and grit to a young Caps lineup that may benefit from those intangibles during a long playoff run. The move also could be the precursor to another, more significant deal.

Walker's $ 2.5 million contract ends in July.

"He energizes a team at the right time," TSN analyst Pierre McGuire said on the air. "Washington's going to be a targeted team, so you look at what Jason Chimera and Scott Walker can bring to the table, it could be massive."

Two hours to go. Hang on and stay tuned.

I hope that's not GMGM's idea of a cup run move...

When will the Chara trade to the Caps be announced?

Posted by: reverendyakdad | March 3, 2010 12:39 PM | Report abuse

This can't be the only move GMGM is making...Not a bad pickup for the price though.

Posted by: jsnyd1 | March 3, 2010 12:40 PM | Report abuse

kinda of the older version of brads. He can be nasty and still has some hands left. Good depth move for grinding playoff series.

Posted by: cadlecreek1 | March 3, 2010 12:40 PM | Report abuse

nice 4th line winger with some grit and pest qualities

he wrecked some sh!t in the bruins series last year

Posted by: cotelloer | March 3, 2010 12:41 PM | Report abuse

say goodbye to Fehr...

Posted by: jerry2178 | March 3, 2010 12:41 PM | Report abuse

Nice pickup for essentially nothing. Doesn't address a need, really, but hey - when you're looking to upgrade anywhere, a tweak like this isn't bad.

Also, he played D early in his career, so it gives another swingman who can fill a spot in case of mid-game injuries.

Posted by: KurtNYC | March 3, 2010 12:41 PM | Report abuse

Meh, could prove bennifitial, did give up much.

Posted by: The_Spear | March 3, 2010 12:41 PM | Report abuse

This trade makes it appear that he's not done yet...

Posted by: CupNow | March 3, 2010 12:42 PM | Report abuse

Does this mean that Fehr's phone will be ringing soon?

Posted by: jmy999 | March 3, 2010 12:42 PM | Report abuse

calling this "a move" is a bit of a stretch

Posted by: doughless | March 3, 2010 12:42 PM | Report abuse

Great depth move.

Here's hoping we see 1 or 2 more moves today...

Posted by: richmondphil | March 3, 2010 12:42 PM | Report abuse

HockeyBuzz speculating that Fehr may be on the move. this could get interesting

Posted by: doughless | March 3, 2010 12:43 PM | Report abuse

isn't he injured now?

Posted by: _stevo | March 3, 2010 12:43 PM | Report abuse

He is supposed to be back from injury soon.

For a team in the Caps position, it is very smart to give up a 7th round pick for a depth forward even if that guy is only the 13th forward on the roster.

Injuries occur during the playoffs, you often need guys to step in for a few games.

Posted by: sgm3 | March 3, 2010 12:43 PM | Report abuse

Meuller and Kevin Porter for Wolski is a done deal

Posted by: elicea | March 3, 2010 12:43 PM | Report abuse

This news is already posted on Wikipedia. That means it must be true!

Posted by: KireDCU | March 3, 2010 12:43 PM | Report abuse

@jerry & doughless

Definitely seems like a FW is moving...

Posted by: jsnyd1 | March 3, 2010 12:43 PM | Report abuse

yeah, we haven't seen the back-half of this trade. We didn't need a RW-er so you have to think a winger plus is moving to open space on the ice for Walker. I see a two-fer-one coming for the Caps. The only player I much care about getting is Volchenkov. He should down AO and I'd love to have him not in our way and on our team.

Logic doesn't work here a lot of the times. :)

Anyways, rumors are that Fehr may be headed out...

Wolski to the Yotes for Mueller.

Just made a bunch of East teams who needed offense yelp out.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 3, 2010 12:46 PM | Report abuse

Walker was brought in to cover for Fehr. Sounds like Fehr is being moved. I hope George has a nice package going to Ottawa for Volchenkov.

Posted by: lightshow | March 3, 2010 12:46 PM | Report abuse

I am glad the Caps picked up someone with an easily pronounced name.

Posted by: uncatim | March 3, 2010 12:47 PM | Report abuse

Looks like the new 4th line is Walker-Steckel-Bradley. That's an improvement over Gordon or Laing on the wing. Walker would presumably also play on the PK. For how little it cost, I like this move.

I don't think this necessarily means we're moving Fehr.

Posted by: butcherbaker | March 3, 2010 12:47 PM | Report abuse

Fehr and a minor leaguer for Volchenkov maybe? Man, I like Fehr...I like all our guys. I hate this.

Posted by: saintex | March 3, 2010 12:47 PM | Report abuse

What D man moves with Fehr is the question...

Posted by: jsnyd1 | March 3, 2010 12:48 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: ablake70 | March 3, 2010 12:49 PM |

Don't think of it as that way. We have a surplus up front anyway, we can allocate some of the stock towards the blue line/grinders.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 3, 2010 12:50 PM | Report abuse

richmond, probably right. Volchenkov is finishing a 2.5m contract, rental or do we resign him? Gotta figure Walker isn't resigned...

Posted by: saintex | March 3, 2010 12:50 PM | Report abuse

my guess would be fehr, pothier, bouchard, and 3rd rounder for volchenkov

Posted by: _stevo | March 3, 2010 12:51 PM | Report abuse

I agree with richmondphil, the caps will have to give up a 1st or 2nd round pick for Volchenkov in addition to players. If we are lucky enough to land him he'll be worth it.

Posted by: fanohock1 | March 3, 2010 12:51 PM | Report abuse

@saintex - Volchenkov would be amazing but why on earth would the Senators trade him when they're going to the playoffs?

Posted by: butcherbaker | March 3, 2010 12:51 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: saintex | March 3, 2010 12:50 PM |

If we could re-sign him, go for it. I'm not sure how much he expects to make. Now if Poti is moved out...

Agree about Walker, no way he gets an offer-sheet back from the Caps after this year.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 3, 2010 12:52 PM | Report abuse

I think this may be a lot like PIT's picking up Bill Guerin last year: not a marquee (e.g., Pronger/Phaneuf/Kovalchuk--LOL) player, but one that many credit for having gotten the Pens over the hump.

Will this work out for us as well Guerin's acquisition did for PIT? Who knows.

I stand with those who say GMGM isn't done yet.

Posted by: Rhino40 | March 3, 2010 12:53 PM | Report abuse

For Ottawa, it's the same as Florida and what's his face last year. Volchenkov may well walk for nothing. Tough choices.

Posted by: butcherbaker | March 3, 2010 12:51 PM |

It's reported that he might be on the block and WSH is a viable home for him.

I gave up on Anton a while ago, but if he's available, he's my #1 choice.

Fehr, Alzner 2nd rd pick for Volchenkov?

Posted by: lightshow | March 3, 2010 12:54 PM | Report abuse

Fehr and Pothier for the Volchinator. Ottawa wanted a puck-mover didn't they?

Posted by: pkendrick | March 3, 2010 12:54 PM | Report abuse

A 14 year veteran who doesn't seem to have done much in the past couple of years except have a succession of injuries. Here is how CBS rates him among all NHL players (a number 1 would be the highest ranking):

Clutch Scorer Ranked 276
Playmaker Ranked 360
Scorer Ranked 325
Tough Guy Ranked 219

Hopefully our GM, who is definitely a smart hockey guy, has a serious reason to bring this guy aboard, and has a bigger impact player to tell us about later today

Exactly. BMurray has to play soothsayer on this one.

At least JayBo's stock was/is above Anton's.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 3, 2010 12:55 PM | Report abuse

This has nothing to do with the Caps but hasn't Florida acquired three second rounders over the last few weeks. One for Dominic Moore, one for Leopold, and one in the Seidenberg deal?

They are going to busy during that round at draft day.

Fehr, Pothier, and a pick...

Posted by: Chad8 | March 3, 2010 12:55 PM | Report abuse

Ottawa can't resign A-Train got Sutton as insurance policy for that reason. George needs to go and get him. He is our ticket to Stanley Cup.

Posted by: lightshow | March 3, 2010 12:56 PM | Report abuse

@richmondphil -- can't believe Ottawa would move him but I'd trade a lot to get him. He's exactly what we need, especially on the PK. Plus he'd probably love to play with Ovi and Semin.

Posted by: butcherbaker | March 3, 2010 12:56 PM | Report abuse

Great. First we sign Sloan to sit and watch games for 700k a year...now we get Walker.

So, with Chimera, Walker, and Bradley in the lineup...we have now DOWNGRADED...

I hope you guys are right. Something else has to happen.

Ovie-Backs-Knubby
Semin-Flash-Laich
Chimera-Morrison-Fehr
Walker-Gordon-Steckel-Bradley

hmm...

Posted by: pkendrick | March 3, 2010 12:54 PM |

Pothier used to play for Ottawa as well.

But, you'd have to throw in a pick/prospect, I'd assume, to make that deal work.

Offering Pothier can be a deal-breaker, depending on if the team need/wants a pending free agent d-man.

Muir's take on the Walker deal:

"The price tag reflects the vet's diminished impact potential, but this looks like a smart pickup for the Caps. Walker is small, but as Donnie Shulzhoffer says, he plays with a big heart and big bag of knuckles in front of the net. He'll bring the kind of energy and grit that really exposes its value in the postseason. This is a great depth addition."

Posted by: sgm3 | March 3, 2010 1:00 PM | Report abuse

eh could add some grit but I'm more worried about the "The move also could be the precursor to another,"

Would you give up a first round pick for Chara??

Posted by: ryan_conaway | March 3, 2010 1:18 PM | Report abuse

my only reservation on walker is, i think he'll get benched by Boudreau. He's not really a Caps kind of player. He's going to take some roughing penalties, maybe a boarding or two. If the Caps can't see the forest thru the trees and understand that a guy like Walker needs to have a little leeway on the ice or he's fairly useless, this will end up being a nothing trade.

I just don't have much faith that the Caps philosophy jives with how Walker likes to play the game and needs to play the game in order to be truly effective. In the past he's been allowed to do what he does best. Which is play an ornery chippy style. He's calmed down as you could see this yr but this trade should energize him.

I took all Chara comments as sarcastic. No reason to try to rationalize an actual Chara trade.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 3, 2010 1:19 PM | Report abuse

salary hit aside, Chara is worth way more than a 1st round pick. He's worth at least 1 front line player + bluechip prospect + 2 first rounders.

It would be like having to deal Fehr, Carlson and 2 1st rounders at least to get Chara. I don't think Alzner instead of JC would get it done.

Mike Knuble is not like Scott Walker. He doesn't play a chippy ornery style where he is involved in or starts skirmishes and scrums. The only parallel in their games is their willingness to be in the crease. But Walker is a much more volatile player on the ice

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 3, 2010 1:24 PM | Report abuse

I have no idea what possible trade between Boston and Washington would be. Boston isn't calling it a season and would be a potential 1st round playoff matchup.

I, like everyone, would love Chara, but as much as I love to dream about that we have to look into actual possible deals.

I'd be shocked if the Caps traded for Tim Thomas. I just don't see it happening for many reasons (his long, expensive contract and NMC).

Patrice Bergeron maybe? Can I dream about that possibility. Very good faceoff man and 2 way center who did sit out last game with an "Olympic injury". Clearly unlikely, but he would fit here.

Posted by: sgm3 | March 3, 2010 1:25 PM | Report abuse

@zmega

I would trade Nuevy and Fehr for Volchenkov only if we can sign him for at least another season.

Posted by: saintex | March 3, 2010 1:28 PM | Report abuse

Volchenkov would be nice, but Ottawa is not going to trade him. They are buyers not sellers, having picked up Matt Cullen and Sutton for 2nd rounders. Sutton is old and his contract runs out this year; he's a playoff rental not an insurance policy on A-V.

Posted by: Gould23 | March 3, 2010 1:29 PM | Report abuse

@cstanton1

Walker will likely be a 13th-14th forward who could help fill in on the 4th line and PK if injuries occur during the playoffs.

At most he would be the 12th forward, playing with the 4th line where he would play tough defensive hockey and forecheck while possibly playing on the PK.

Posted by: sgm3 | March 3, 2010 1:29 PM | Report abuse

Man, I didn't even think about a three-way deal. It seems way more plausible, if Boston is supposedly in the mix. Every team gets what they want...Leclaire or Elliot could be moved for a pick by the Sens then..recoup that lost 2nd rounder.

McPhee sets the tone, he doesn't need Boudreau's say-so. It was McPhee's choice to eliminate the tough guy role this yr and he probably got Bouds's buy-in to do that.

I think after watching the way his team has been pushed around this year, its become glaringly obvious that his team needs some more grit upfront and on D.

Posted by: sgm3 | March 3, 2010 1:32 PM | Report abuse

Re Walker, the TSN guys said that the spark he can provide is the main reason why Walker is such a good pickup for the Caps. Let's face it, who can argue with adding someone who can provide a spark late in a close game for a freaking SEVENTH rounder?

(Speaking of TSN, they just said that Jeff Halpern is going to the Kings.)

Saintex and everyone else who wants Volchenkov, I'm with you. I love the guy and would def overpay as long as he's not a rental. God, I'm nervous!

One thing with Walker - in the last few years, he has not really been used on PK. He is a gritty veteran who brings toughness - and he could probably be used to help discourage cheap shots on Caps stars.

No need to get into discussions about Chara (not going to happen) but I would absolutely give up Alzner along with other players for Chara.

Posted by: sgm3 | March 3, 2010 1:41 PM | Report abuse

i'll say this -- it sure would be nice if we actually traded for some players who could be here longer than a month or two. Thats why I wished we'd resigned a Matt Cooke type. Chimera at least is conceivably part of the future but overall McPhee doesn't acquire pieces via trade that will be here for at least a few years.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 3, 2010 1:41 PM | Report abuse

Dafoe turned out to be a good to very good goalie.
Alzner gets beat & gives up the pucks way to much for a stay @ home d-man.

Walker is a great pickup for a 7th round pick. He adds a lot of toughness and leadership to the team and would be a good addition to the 4th line. I wouldn't be surprised if Staios went to Washington before the day is done.

Posted by: Stu_c | March 3, 2010 1:42 PM | Report abuse

Alzner upside, how solid he already is and he's young, inexpensive for an older Chara plus other players and picks. This is an overselling move that could pay off now but hurt the future in a big way. No dice.

hell i'd give up Alzner for Andrew Alberts.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 3, 2010 1:42 PM | Report abuse

Walker isn't a long-term pickup, but look at what was dealt for him - a 7th round pick. That's as close as you get to free. I hope McPhee makes another move, preferably for a Dman, but the Walker trade was a great deal for the Caps.

no to Staios. I liked him before he turned 50 or however old he is. He's not bad but its a minimal upgrade defensively. His main strength is probably as a leader. But I want more of a defensive upgrade than a Staios.

Posted by: carsonspence | March 3, 2010 1:48 PM | Report abuse

PuckDaddy on Walker:

12:26 p.m. EST: Scott Walker's trade to the Washington Capitals (per TFP) is a solid one for the Caps. Good intangibles, plays with passion (as Aaron Ward's face can confirm). An energy player that went through the playoff grind last season with the Carolina Hurricanes.

He's a UFA after this season, and cost a seventh-round pick. Could be a total win for the Caps if he gives them anything. One Milbury.

Still stunning that the Caps have added more at the forward spot in the last few months than on the blue line.

Posted by: timmyv38 | March 3, 2010 1:48 PM | Report abuse

Scott Burnside on Belanger: Again, another depth piece. Think of guys like Pascal Dupuis, a throw-in in the Hossa deal to Pittsburgh two years ago, and Belanger is a similar type player who can do a little bit of everything. As long as you don't expect too much from him.

Posted by: saintex | March 3, 2010 1:51 PM | Report abuse

Interesting move with Belanger. He's good but to me it looks like they are working on something bigger. Bringing in too many forwards, possibly to move one for a deal for a defenceman. Belanger is a good guy to have on the roster but IMO right now they are carrying one too many centres.

Posted by: Stu_c | March 3, 2010 1:51 PM | Report abuse

He's a semi-finesse center but more gritty than BMo

Thats all I can say about Belanger. Nothing real sexy about him. He's not bad, he's not great, he's decent. Hopefully he plays above his head when he gets here, sometimes players give a little extra for a team going down the playoff road

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 3, 2010 1:51 PM | Report abuse

On the surface, Walker for a 7th round pick appears to be a low risk (rental) move. It can only help improve our forward depth and toughness down the stretch.

If GMGM is going to make another move--and that's likely--my preference would be for him to seek an affordable, stay at home defenseman. IMHO, this team is too good to risk upsetting its chemistry with jaw dropping, deadline day moves.
