This can't be the only move GMGM is making...Not a bad pickup for the price though.

Nice pickup for essentially nothing. Doesn't address a need, really, but hey - when you're looking to upgrade anywhere, a tweak like this isn't bad.

Also, he played D early in his career, so it gives another swingman who can fill a spot in case of mid-game injuries.

Meh, could prove bennifitial, did give up much.

yeah, we haven't seen the back-half of this trade. We didn't need a RW-er so you have to think a winger plus is moving to open space on the ice for Walker. I see a two-fer-one coming for the Caps. The only player I much care about getting is Volchenkov. He should down AO and I'd love to have him not in our way and on our team.

Walker was brought in to cover for Fehr. Sounds like Fehr is being moved. I hope George has a nice package going to Ottawa for Volchenkov.

I am glad the Caps picked up someone with an easily pronounced name.

Looks like the new 4th line is Walker-Steckel-Bradley. That's an improvement over Gordon or Laing on the wing. Walker would presumably also play on the PK. For how little it cost, I like this move.

Don't think of it as that way. We have a surplus up front anyway, we can allocate some of the stock towards the blue line/grinders.

Agree about Walker, no way he gets an offer-sheet back from the Caps after this year.

I think this may be a lot like PIT's picking up Bill Guerin last year: not a marquee (e.g., Pronger/Phaneuf/Kovalchuk--LOL) player, but one that many credit for having gotten the Pens over the hump.

Will this work out for us as well Guerin's acquisition did for PIT? Who knows.

I stand with those who say GMGM isn't done yet.

But, you'd have to throw in a pick/prospect, I'd assume, to make that deal work.

Offering Pothier can be a deal-breaker, depending on if the team need/wants a pending free agent d-man.

Scott Walker is simply insurance and will be a 12/13th forward. Getting him for 2 months for next to nothing is a great deal.

I have faith GMGM will pull off a few more good deals between now and 3...

Walker is a PLAYOFF GUY! Don't look at the stats, look at the intangibles he brings.

my only reservation on walker is, i think he'll get benched by Boudreau. He's not really a Caps kind of player. He's going to take some roughing penalties, maybe a boarding or two. If the Caps can't see the forest thru the trees and understand that a guy like Walker needs to have a little leeway on the ice or he's fairly useless, this will end up being a nothing trade.

I just don't have much faith that the Caps philosophy jives with how Walker likes to play the game and needs to play the game in order to be truly effective. In the past he's been allowed to do what he does best. Which is play an ornery chippy style. He's calmed down as you could see this yr but this trade should energize him.

Mike Knuble is not like Scott Walker. He doesn't play a chippy ornery style where he is involved in or starts skirmishes and scrums. The only parallel in their games is their willingness to be in the crease. But Walker is a much more volatile player on the ice

I have no idea what possible trade between Boston and Washington would be. Boston isn't calling it a season and would be a potential 1st round playoff matchup.

I, like everyone, would love Chara, but as much as I love to dream about that we have to look into actual possible deals.

I'd be shocked if the Caps traded for Tim Thomas. I just don't see it happening for many reasons (his long, expensive contract and NMC).

Patrice Bergeron maybe? Can I dream about that possibility. Very good faceoff man and 2 way center who did sit out last game with an "Olympic injury". Clearly unlikely, but he would fit here.

At most he would be the 12th forward, playing with the 4th line where he would play tough defensive hockey and forecheck while possibly playing on the PK.

Man, I didn't even think about a three-way deal. It seems way more plausible, if Boston is supposedly in the mix. Every team gets what they want...Leclaire or Elliot could be moved for a pick by the Sens then..recoup that lost 2nd rounder.

I just feel Volchenkov in my bones. He's coming here. I've now convinced myself that I'd be shocked if it didn't happen.

McPhee sets the tone, he doesn't need Boudreau's say-so. It was McPhee's choice to eliminate the tough guy role this yr and he probably got Bouds's buy-in to do that.

I think after watching the way his team has been pushed around this year, its become glaringly obvious that his team needs some more grit upfront and on D.

Again though, if Anton decides not to re-sign, why not trade him now while he has the chance? It's up to him to weigh the value of Anton vs. the value of his return.

Re Walker, the TSN guys said that the spark he can provide is the main reason why Walker is such a good pickup for the Caps. Let's face it, who can argue with adding someone who can provide a spark late in a close game for a freaking SEVENTH rounder?

One thing with Walker - in the last few years, he has not really been used on PK. He is a gritty veteran who brings toughness - and he could probably be used to help discourage cheap shots on Caps stars.

No need to get into discussions about Chara (not going to happen) but I would absolutely give up Alzner along with other players for Chara.

i'll say this -- it sure would be nice if we actually traded for some players who could be here longer than a month or two. Thats why I wished we'd resigned a Matt Cooke type. Chimera at least is conceivably part of the future but overall McPhee doesn't acquire pieces via trade that will be here for at least a few years.

With all due respect to Olie, Caps fans get too hard up for him even though his career numbers look similar to Theo's.

He was also great in the game against the Caps the week before the Olympics.

Walker is a great pickup for a 7th round pick. He adds a lot of toughness and leadership to the team and would be a good addition to the 4th line. I wouldn't be surprised if Staios went to Washington before the day is done.

Alzner upside, how solid he already is and he's young, inexpensive for an older Chara plus other players and picks. This is an overselling move that could pay off now but hurt the future in a big way. No dice.

Walker isn't a long-term pickup, but look at what was dealt for him - a 7th round pick. That's as close as you get to free. I hope McPhee makes another move, preferably for a Dman, but the Walker trade was a great deal for the Caps.

no to Staios. I liked him before he turned 50 or however old he is. He's not bad but its a minimal upgrade defensively. His main strength is probably as a leader. But I want more of a defensive upgrade than a Staios.

That's a GREAT return for Halpern, to be honest.

So getting the impression Eric Belanger is a Cap

This really means GMGM will be shipping out at least one forward and a prospect for a D man, IMO. I would look for Staios or Volchenkov. My adrenaline is pounding away. WOW! Deadline day is brutal.

Belanger played for Bruce in Lowell. That makes me like this pickup more.

Belanger - center, has gotten 13 goals and 22-24 assists each of the last 3 seasons. Also 30 PIM or less each of those seasons. Anyone know much else?

Scott Burnside on Belanger: Again, another depth piece. Think of guys like Pascal Dupuis, a throw-in in the Hossa deal to Pittsburgh two years ago, and Belanger is a similar type player who can do a little bit of everything. As long as you don't expect too much from him.

There has to be another trade in the mix moving part out if we just brought in a 2nd forward.

Belanger at 13/22/35 in 60 games this year in Minnesota. He's 32 and in the last year that pays him 1.75m

Interesting move with Belanger. He's good but to me it looks like they are working on something bigger. Bringing in too many forwards, possibly to move one for a deal for a defenceman. Belanger is a good guy to have on the roster but IMO right now they are carrying one too many centres.

He's a semi-finesse center but more gritty than BMo

Thats all I can say about Belanger. Nothing real sexy about him. He's not bad, he's not great, he's decent. Hopefully he plays above his head when he gets here, sometimes players give a little extra for a team going down the playoff road

Belanger is a 57% FO winner who can PK if needed. I think the FO% is key, because we lack true centers..

Belanger... possible third line center? Since he's on the Wild, I haven't seen much of him.

I am confused! Why Belanger for a second round?

Belanger is 7th in the NHL in FO% - that gives us 2 of the top 10. Sounds like a 3rd line center.

I really like the Belanger move. I don't think this means BMo will be moved I think it means that Flash will be playing on the wing with Belanger as the 3rd line center.

Isn't Belanger considered a good penalty killer?

Over the past two yrs Belanger has averaged less than a hit per game.

Again, he's no powder puff but he's not exactly Mike Richards.

On the surface, Walker for a 7th round pick appears to be a low risk (rental) move. It can only help improve our forward depth and toughness down the stretch.

If GMGM is going to make another move--and that's likely--my preference would be for him to seek an affordable, stay at home defenseman. IMHO, this team is too good to risk upsetting its chemistry with jaw dropping, deadline day moves.

A friend of mine who is a Wild fan says that Belanger is very good on the PK (and of course learned Lemaire's fabled PK system) and is great on face-offs.
