Staffan Kronwall signed by Calgary...it was nice knowing you..you took the body too much to fit in GMGM's idea of a defenseman

Boo, I can't remember, do they show "Victory" in the pre-season?

I know, right ... what's up with that?!? I'm already trying to decide which jersey to wear on the 21st!

if you wear all of them - you could give your section the 'thrill of the pre-season' as you slowly peeled away one jersey to reveal the next one :)

I'm in an odd mood, but I laughed when I read that it was Sabres at Buffalo. It would be odd if we played the Blues there.

We had to give up our season tickets this year because of financial concerns, which means that now that we won't be there they will win The Cup. As soon as they are on sale though I plan on buying up all the games Vs the Islanders. Got to see some Ovechkin and Tavares. Hopefully Tavares doesn't turn into the whining brat that that other Canadian phenom became.

Damn I miss hockey.

Any word yet on Schultz?

I'm kinda hoping the Caps let him go. The Caps have a glut of Defensemen to choose from, and the Pens could use another D-man (or two). I still think Schultz has potential, but it sure seems like most Caps fans have given up on him.

Posted by: PensFan98 | July 14, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

lornemyoung: They probably specified they were playing Buffalo in Buffalo because its not uncommon for teams to play in other towns, let alone Europe, for the preseason. For example, I think Buffalo has played preseason games in Rochester in the past just to give Rochester fans a taste of the NHL.

Gotta love McPhee Derangement Syndrome...

McPhee makes a move for a player during the season, McPhee sucks! This isn't what we need...

Same player leaves during the off season, McPhee sucks! This guy was great, what was McPhee thinking???

At least we're consistent about one thing...

CapsNut - spot on. Makes us Caps fans look a lot like any other team's nitwit fans.

To think these fools act as though we have been perennial contenders the last 10 years. the way some ppl talk here, we're only 1 player away. WTH?! Ummmm.... we were out of the playoff just 2 years ago.

GMGM picked up kronwall off of waviers when he still wasn't sure if pothier was going to be able to play. he was insurance that GMGM feels is no longer needed. it was the right move to make at the time.
if you feel that he should have kept kronwall over schultz then that's a different story. good thing you're not running the caps - because it's not GMGM who i think sucks

That's only part of the roster. There are other invites there as well. The numbers are on the back of their helmets in about 1" tall numbers. Hard for some people (like me) to see.

Had a small turnout on Monday but the small crowd gave a nice ovation after the first group finished. Had to leave early from the afternoon group though.

How bout this one for consideration: Top Moves by GMGM.

1) Could be, if the player continues on path, but moving Eminger and a #3 for the Carlson pick.
2) Otherwise, #1, trading Witt to Nashville for 31 that became Varlamov.

After that, fuzzy memory. Was it Flash and the pick for Green for Robt Lang? And was it ShaMo and the pick for Schultz for Gonch? And did Laich come over for Bondra?

Taking Holtby way down in draft seems good now, but we don't know.

Semin at #13 in 2002. Great move. Picking Green end of 2004 first round - a great move, compounded by the fact he got the pick via trade.

Backstrom at #4 in 2006, passing on other high-rated players, that looks better, for now, than Alzner at #5 in 2007 (not knocking Alzner - he's just no Backie).

Anyone else?

Posted by: Section117 | July 14, 2009 8:06 PM

Actually, if you think about it, we picked him up on re-entry waivers from the AHL affiliate of the Leafs. He played a few games for us and was sent to Hershey. Now he's in Edmonton. That's 5 in 2 years. I'd expect he'll play in the Oiler's AHL team, that'd be 7.

Hope he gets to keep the frequent miles points.

Yes, I guess it's kind of a rarity.

I think it's probably harder (or unimaginable, or whatever) for a die-hard Caps fan to also like watching Pens games than it is for a die-hard Pen fans to enjoy watching Caps games.

For me, I love the Pens and I love hockey in general. Because of the latter, I really enjoy watching talented, exciting teams ... and the Caps obviously are that.

Man I can hear Tarik from all the way over here! ;D

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | July 15, 2009 10:34 AM | Report abuse

I guarantee we have defenders that can clear the crease and do. What needs to be considered is what the coaches are preaching and what type of game fits player's abilities. The Caps utilize their speed and offensive talents as opposed to a stay-at-home/shut them down defensive team. I admit, I get pissed off and vocal when I see a Crosby-type camped out at the net untouched, but if our 2 defenders are tangled up in the corner or behind the net, in some cases, the responsibility shifts to another player, like the center. That's one of the great things about this sport. Every player has offensive and defensive responsibilities. On top of that, every player needs to be aware of what their teammate is doing at all time. It's just so fluid.

Posted by: gonchpup | July 15, 2009 10:44 AM | Report abuse

Did any of you actually watch Kronwall play for us? He wasn't a physical player. He was a smooth-skating puck mover. Big guy, but not terribly physical.. which is fine.

Not too sure about the Green pic, but everything else is correct. Bondra to the Sens for Laich and some pick. ShaMo and Schultz pick for Gonchar. Flash we did get from DET, and I think 2 different picks? One of them was probably Green.

You can say whatever the hell you want about GMGM's past, but his picks during the rebuild was on point.

The trades were Lang for Fleischmann, a first round pick (Green) and a 4th round pick (Luke Lynes) and Gonchar for Morrisonn, a first round pick and a second round pick (Mikhail Yunkov).

Other favorite McPhee moves: Sutherby for a second round pick that was flipped for Huet. Those moves almost singlehandedly got us into the 2008 playoffs. Adam Oates for Maxime Ouellette and 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks. The 3 picks were packaged to move up to get Semin. Matt Pettinger for Matt Cooke. Even tho Cooke wasn't resigned, just getting Pettinger's $1 mill salary off the books was a smart move. Drafting Osala with a 4th round pick (maybe). Drafting Green when he had been passed over 28 times

btw, anyone who really thinks that Schultz will turn into Chara is more clueless than alicia silverstone (or never had the chance to watch Chara play for the Isles and obviously what he transformed into for the Sens and Bs). The only thing both players have in common is they were both very tall and lanky when they first hit the league and they both skated decently for such tall guys. That's about the end of that comparison. Schultz would need a brain transplant to turn into Chara.

Joe Finley probably has a better chance of turning into Chara than anyone.

And knowing that I was one of few people calling to keep Theo, since Neuvrith is not ready for full-time and BJ still is not Theo, I find that comment especially odd.

Dig deeper I guess, if you want to insult me.

In previous threads you mentioned that many teams would be interested in Theo and that he still possesses trade value. My impression is that GMGM tried to shop both him and Nylander for a bag of pucks.

I think the Caps would be fine with BJ in the backup role, hence the initial talks with BJ. Early in the year, BJ was the better of the two goalies and, at times, he was lights-out. He's accepted the backup role graciously, and has a leadership role in the locker room.

Now that that his hip is repaired, BJ should be fine as a backup that plays 40% of the time. And, unlike Theo, I'd have no problem using him in the playoffs.

That said......Theo's not going anywhere.

I'm a bit more worried about Varly getting hurt, as his style makes him susceptible to injury.

I really hope we have a big home game vs Philly or Pittsburgh on Super Bowl Sunday during the day.

hey look, cstanton1 has nothing but negative things to say along with a nice put down to those who arent blessed with all the hockey knowledge that he/she is.

jeff schultz is 23 and just completed his second full season in the nhl. he may never be chara, but at 23 and w/ a couple years on the island, nobody thought chara would become chara either.

hey dcsportsfan, my favorite stalker! Again, go smoke some more of the good stuff if you think about even mentioning Chara and Schultz in the same sentence. You obviously never watched Chara play at the same developmental stages that Schultz is currently in. There is nothing similar in their games. Fans who don't actually WATCH these players shouldn't be allowed to comment on them like they're experts, its pretty annoying. Its almost as silly as calling Dale Hunter a "Goon"

cstanton is more than likely one of those BOD clowns who have been kicked off pretty much every Caps themed message board on the internet. For those of you who don't know what the BOD is, they are a group (or as I'm inclined to think, one person with multiple personalities) of people who terrorized the main Capitals boards a few years ago and who are united in their belief of 3 things: 1. they hate McPhee passionately and criticize everything he does 2. they think all Euros are soft 3. they think every player who doesn't try to bash his opponents thru the boards at least once every shift is soft. And they also constantly ridicule everyone who doesn't think as they do. I really wish this comments section had an ignore button. You can't reason with BOD. God knows I've tried

cstanton1 is the kid on the playground who played by himself because no one cared to learn how to play his games. i'd rather listen to pensfan98 than cstanton1. and even then, i can't see how you could be a penguins fan and like watching the capitals. compared to cstanton1 though, pensfan98 actually makes me smile a little. though it could be my cough medicine but still....
