Caps Can Clinch Division Tomorrow

I never thought I would be writing this tonight. But the Panthers just beat the Hurricanes in Raleigh for the first time six years, 4-3, despite being out-shot 46-17, despite losing goaltender Tomas Vokoun to back spasms.

That means the Caps can clinch the Southeast Division championship -- it would be their first since winning back to back titles in 2000 and 2001 -- with a win or an OT loss against the Panthers tomorrow night.

That's right. If the Caps get a single point, a first round matchup with the Rangers, Bruins, Flyers or Senators awaits. If the Caps lose in regulation, however, the Canes are in and they are out.

The other day, Ted Leonsis called the Caps a team of destiny. They are now one point away from becoming just that.

The game isn't just for the playoffs, it's also for OV's MVP award, and Coach Boudreau's Coach of the Year Award! It's a big game, eh?

Posted by: Dezlboy | April 4, 2008 11:25 PM | Report abuse

Needing only a point to clinch the Division is even more of a reason to get Steckel back in the lineup tomorrow if healthy. At the risk of messing with a hot lineup, his defense, faceoffs and PK could play a big role in earning that point.

Any word on the Panthers' goalie status for tommorow?

I already no the answer but when you finally do get the info I would appreciate it if you could share that with us :)

"If the Caps lose in regulation, however, the Canes are in and they are out."
I think you mean they are out of the division championship - but they can still get into the playoffs right, if Philly loses its last game too, no?

Here is a great quote for posting in the CAPS locker room before the Florida game:

"We control everything now," Horton said. "They're [Carolina] going to be watching and wondering what we're doing."

Nathan Horton, after the Carolina game, refering to the Panthers' next game against the CAPS.

We'll see on Saturday what Alex and company have to say about who "controls everything" now!!! Go CAPS!

No. The Flyers won tonight so they have 93 points. Since we have 92, we can't catch up to them if we lose.

I found some article saying that some carolina player (whitney maybe?) said that they could hope for tomorrow, but the chances that Florida would win against the caps... "probably not". I re-searched for the link and I can't find it... I think it was on but they're juggling alot of stuff right now....

If you are superstitious, please skip the rest of this post (which is copied from previous thread).

Calculations for the #6 seed. (Anyone see anything wrong?)

NYR: NYR gets 0 points and BOS gets 2 points
BOS: BOS gets 2 points and NYR gets at least 1 point
BOS: BOS gets 1 point and PHL gets 1 or fewer points
OTT: BOS gets 0 points and PHL gets 1 or fewer points
PHL: PHL gets 2 points and BOS gets 1 or fewer points

Posted by: Phil C. | April 4, 2008 11:46 PM | Report abuse

Found it!!!

"It feels disgusting. We just needed to win two of our last four, and we go 1-3," left wing Ray Whitney said. "How we lost this one, not only is it frustrating and it hurts, (but) you hate to sit back and hope you're going to get help. ... We've got to hope (the Panthers) do the same job tomorrow night as they (did against Carolina). I doubt they will. Washington's taking care of their business like it means something, and it's just frustrating that we let this one slip away."

Posted by: unhuman | April 4, 2008 11:47 PM | Report abuse

If Caps come out on Saturday thinking they only need one point, Florida will deal us a heart-breaking 1-goal loss and end our play-off dreams. We need to be aggressive from the very beginning, and only consider the tie if it is middle to late third period.

just imagine how comfortable we would all be right now if they had fired handlon after last years stinkfest instead of waiting until thanksgiving. how did GMGM not realize that anyone who cant win with the talent we had last year and this year doesnt deserve a job. caps have just as much talent, young talent at that, as pittsburgh who is the top seed in the east. we could be right there with them next year, a whole year with double b bruce boudreau

Even with Car winning we'd control our own destiny since OTT lost in regulation. Incredible - I would have never thought CAR would screw up like this. And they had lot of help from the refs - even the commentators said some calls were more than questionable.

Well I'm done with celebrating the lost..

With that said, it's not a sure win or OTL, tonight. Panthers can very well play, like how they did against the Canes, against Caps, and beat us in regulation. Although, I find it hard that it will happen, but look at what happened to Carolina. No one thought they'd lose this game, but look at how it ended. Panthers steal a win, Canes now have to scoreboard watch, hoping Caps lose in regulation. It is going to be a tough game, that's for sure. Our boys better be ready to fight for this one.

Posted by: elicea | April 5, 2008 12:39 AM | Report abuse

@ Love

Only problem with that thought is if they were looking for a coach in the off season, would they have selected BB? I doubt it. I bet they would have gone with an "experienced" coach instead.

Reason Caps will not fall to FLA like Canes did: right now we are a better team.

Let's go Caps!

Anyway, let it be known that I've converted locals (I'm in grad school in Idaho, of all places, where we just shut down the bars) into watching the Caps. I've got five people over to watch the next game. We're all rooting hard, from many time zones away. Voices three thousand miles distant, yelling LET'S GO CAPS. Team of destiny? God, I hope. I've been a fan for too long, maybe this is the year.

Dammit, as much as I've been down on this team this year, I believe.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Florida Panthers.

A tie and we're in!

Now for one last sobering moment of truth if you still think the NHL wants one of their "good ole boys" (and NOT the Caps) in the playoffs: Florida was nicked with 9 penalties last night vs Canes 0, nada, zip. And there were two 5 on 3's to boot!
So (NHL Refs) you would like us beleive the Canes had an otherwise perfect game?

The Canes sobbing fans deserved better, but IMHO, their team had more than enough chances.

Now let's all hope the Cats don't show up with the same energy they had on Friday night!

Posted by: dogdaze | April 5, 2008 9:12 AM | Report abuse

FLA played rather well yesterday. BB take notes and play smart - don't fall in their trap.

They're a very relaxed team with nothing to lose. Their goals yesterday were awesome goals. And I suspect they'll get many penalties for, yesterday the refs seemed like they wanted to prove a point in not handing us the p****.

10 hours to the game. 36000 mississippies. 35999... 35998...

The Hurricanes got very unlucky in that game. They completely outplayed the Panthers. Too bad though, they lost :)

I spent 10 years in Korea on a couple of different tours while I was in the Air Force. My family and I enjoyed our time there. I must say that I liked my second time around better because Armed Forces Korea Network would occasionally show hockey -- and for some reason, I got to see a fair number of Caps games. Didn't have computers in those days, so could not keep in touch via an excellent forum like Tarik's blog. Not sure where you're stationed in the country, but good luck and hope you can enjoy some Caps live action on your return.

Tarik -- congrats on First Page! BB is a classy guy but I wonder -- do you think he'll start getting a complex about his wardrobe? :)

Panthers will be tough tonight. Even with a ton of penalties, they still took it to the Canes. They said that if they can't control their own fate, it's nice to affect someone else's. Caps better be ready, but, hopefully, not gripping their sticks too tightly. It should be one heck of a game.

GO CAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry - I was working 3 sources for ya that were all maybes, but none panned out. So unless this one seat ends up being available, I've got nothin' (and I know that you were looking for two, so it is probably a moot point anyway). Backup Craig Anderson has proved more than capable of late, winning seven of eight starts. He picked up the win Friday, too, stopping 26 shots after being brought on in relief.

''It was like damage control, only we were leading the game,'' said Anderson, who likely will start Saturday.

This discussion about BB and The Jack Adams, please correct me if I'm wrong but the Adams is awarded for the regular season, just like the Hart, Calder, and Vezina. I thought for consideration, one required a full season tenure. That is why I have never mentioned BB in the same sentence.

It sucks the big onion that BB cannot be considered but I think dems da facts.

If anyone knows differently, please post and make my day!

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | April 5, 2008 10:47 AM | Report abuse

To paraphrase Martin Luther King, Jr.

"I can remember when [Capitals fans] were just going around...scratching where they didn't itch and laughing when they were not tickled. But that day is over. We mean business now and we are determined to gain our rightful place in [Hockey's] world. And that's all this whole thing is about."

Posted by: Greg S. | April 5, 2008 10:52 AM | Report abuse

There are no restrictions on how long a coach must have been in place, but it is based on regular season. Obviously, if a coach was in place only for a few weeks, they would not be considered/voted on by the writers, but BB has been in place long enough and has had a sufficient body of work for the writers to make a vote.

Hail BB!

Posted by: CT Caps Fan | April 5, 2008 10:54 AM | Report abuse

I don't have a rule book or a criteria list for you. However, I know that coaches that took over for teams partway through the season in the past were eligible. For example, I ran across an article where a bunch of ESPN guys were listing their finalists for the various awards. Several of them chose Bill Barber for the Jack Adams that year after he took over for the fired Craig Ramsey in Dec of that year. So, BB is eligible and with what he's done for the team and turned it around from the bottom of the heap, I think he's fully deserving.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. My concern was from a Miami sports writer way back in '96 who said Doug Maclean could not be considered even though he took the Panthers to the cup that year. Maclean took over for Roger Nielson right after the season started so he (again from a Miami sports writer no where near as good as Tarik) could not be considered.

Anyway, it is painfully obvious I'm doing way too much crunching about the Panthers and the game tonight so I'll leave it alone.

Lets Go Cap-I-Tals!!!

@ longtimecapsfan

Great article. Just another reason why there should be no doubt who the MVP is this year, playoffs or not. Tonight could be the night we clinch many trophies. Open the trophy case Caps!

Before the Canes game on Tuesday, I put out a request that there should be no negative talk on this blog. Let's do it again.

No negativity. Today, this is a springboard to tonight and is the pep rally the team should have behind them.

Let's Go Caps! Bring home the division!!!

I gotta tell you that I wish I was playing tonight... The thought of coming this far and not making it is paralyzing to me. I don't know if I can handle a loss.

I know that many will say I have this thing totally out of perspective, but isn't that what being a diehard Caps fan is all about? You got to want it and I want it bad.

Kudos to all the fans that stuck by em! they have made one heckuva run. I still remember someone about eight games ago that talked about the Caps being elimanated, "Which should happen very soon". Sorry you didn't believe, the rest of us do!

I'm glad I snagged my playoff tickets really early. :)

How? I tried looking on the caps site and I couldn't figure out how to reserve tickets.

By about any measure, this season has been an overwhelming success. Having come from 30th position in the depths of our collective depression, to being on the cusp of a playoff berth is a remarkable achievement. It takes a lot of character to get this far. It takes a lot of perseverance, hard work, and working for a common goal - to win the game coming up. The Caps have matured in front of our eyes, and yet have maintained that youthful exuberence and elan to make the effort a pleasure and a rewarding experience for themselves and us as passionate observers.

Nicely put. I could not have said it better myself.

Tonight is the equivalent of a game seven. Got to win tonight to continue on.

Go Caps!!!

We Believe!!!

I think any result tonight is a win for the Caps (hear me through...). Obviously, I want a point and a division crown (and will be decked in red screaming my lungs out in Section 110), but even with a loss, as Greg says, this season is a success. Coming up one game short will light an even greater fire in these young guys to make it next year. Teams who get close, get hungry. Watch out if that happens.

But anyway, let's make it a moot point, and LET'S GO CAPS!!!

I was so nervous this morning I decided to sleep three extra hours to make them go by quicker. Don't know what I am going to do for 6 more hours. Any suggestions?
