Caps, Canadiens scoreless after one period
Capitals Coach Bruce Boudreau went with Semyon Varlamov in goal tonight for Game 3, and the decision paid off in the first period. Varlamov stopped 10 shots, including several close-in chances, and Washington was able to withstand a spirited start by Montreal at Bell Centre.
The Capitals had a quality chance on a power play, but center Nicklas Backstrom, who scored the winning goal in overtime on Saturday, couldn't get the puck past Canadiens goalie Jaroslav Halak.
Washington went 0 for 2 on power plays in the first period, extending its scoreless streak with a man advantage to 0 for 10 in the series.
The Canadiens had one power-play opportunity, but Varlamov made a handful of acrobatic saves against the second-ranked power play in the league. That pushed the Capitals' penalty kill success rate to 6 for 8 in the series.

Montreal is getting as many shots off on our PP as us. They look like they have the man advantage at times on our PP.
I don't know if it's their speed, energy, anticipation, etc... but they are getting to pucks first in all 3 zones.
I'm not sure if there is a good way to deal with their speed other than for all of our players to pay extra attention to their positioning.
Sloan is faster than some of our defensemen but he's error prone and I'm not sure who you would take out of the lineup.

If the Caps start crashing the net we'll see a goal or two scored; otherwise, the long-range shots aren't gonna make it. I wish Bruce will bench Green for a couple of shifts. He's making a habit of sucking.

just got in - no score . . . someone tell me - why aren't we winning??
Posted by: Satchelass | April 19, 2010 7:59 PM | Report abuse
I would take Green off the PP right now, there's too much pressure on him and doesn't look like he can handle it... he really can't do anything offensively at the moment
Posted by: joek443 | April 19, 2010 8:01 PM | Report abuse
it's amazing how confident Carlson looks compared to Green... who's the rookie between the two???
Posted by: joek443 | April 19, 2010 8:03 PM | Report abuse
While I'm not ready to totally take Green off the PP, I don't think he should be there the entire 2 minutes. I say, we should put Carlson on the first PP unit and Green on the 2nd.

why can't i listen to the game on internet as i've done in past??? can't see the game (watching bruins now), but i'm pissed off that erskine's not in the lineup....is he hurt, or does BB just not want the team to play tough/confrontational? several commented on how they thought poti's fight turned the game the other night....why in the world won't he sit shultz or green? sounds like both are having a similar night tonight, even more bothersome

I'll be honest - I was iffy on the Chimera trade, until I saw the first couple games he was in. Mainly because the only time I'd seen him was when he injured Ovie. But Chimera is such a great 3rd/4th line player - speed, grit, hitting, decent scorer.

4-0 not sufficiently decisive - stomp them down some more so they know who is boss up there in France - not to be inhumane, but this is a hockey game - if we don't, they might end up thinking they have a chance
