Caps, Canadiens still tied after two periods

Neither team scored in the second period, but the Canadiens forced the issue much more than Washington. Montreal spent virtually the entire second half of the period in the Capitals zone and tested goalie Jose Theodore repeatedly.

Theodore was up to the task, including back-to-back saves roughly 11 minutes into the period. First he stopped a shot that got through from just inside the Washington blue line, and moments later, he blunted a point-blank bid by Tomas Plekanec, much to the delight of the sell-out crowd at Verizon Center.

Plekanec was the player who created a stir when he said Theodore was not the same caliber of goalie as New Jersey's Martin Brodeur or Buffalo's Ryan Miller, and after Theodore made that second big save, fans rose to their feet and began chanting, "Theo, Theo."

Despite being outshot 13-8 in the period, the Capitals came the closest to scoring when Nicklas Backstrom challenged Canadiens goalie Jaroslav Halak. Backstrom's shot deflected off Halak's glove and then hit the crossbar before bouncing away. Fans appeared so sure Backstrom had scored that many had popped up from their seats with arms raised, ready to celebrate.

Was really nice when Theo robbed Plekanec... hahaha.

Now get to business, Caps!

This game reminds me of a few others this season, where the Caps outplayed the opposition through two, went into the third period tied and ripped off two or three quick goals in the third to take the game. Let's hope this period plays out much the same way.

Posted by: CDon | April 15, 2010 8:55 PM | Report abuse

The Caps needs to strike quickly in this third period.

UNLEASH THE FURY!!!!!

Posted by: wocoliz | April 15, 2010 8:56 PM | Report abuse

I think that the Caps used a lot more energy than the Canadiens in the 1st half of the game.

The key is to avoid mistakes and play smart because the Canadiens may be the team with more legs down the stretch.

A lucky bounce or two wouldn't hurt, either.

We dodged a bullet on that play. Pyatt couldn't quite get that puck settled.

Yeah he missed but the 4 caps players in front of the net that let that happen didnt help either

Posted by: jdove80 | April 15, 2010 9:10 PM | Report abuse

CDon that started it but we still had guys back and everyone was just looking at the puck and no one was looking in the slot. Green has to have his stick tied up or take away the pass.

Posted by: jdove80 | April 15, 2010 9:12 PM | Report abuse

I'll take that PP

Posted by: TimDz | April 15, 2010 9:13 PM | Report abuse

that goal was on Ovi, he let that dude skate right by him and he made a great pass to Gomez

Posted by: joek443 | April 15, 2010 9:13 PM | Report abuse

I know there were four other guys there who could've stopped that goal, but OV makes a half-hearted attempt to take a guy out at the blue line, then just stands around watching. I guess I'm just frustrated that he seems to be playing at a speed slower than everyone else. I'm wondering if he is, in fact, a little knicked up.

we didn't take advantage of it. montreal with a PP before this is over.. count on it.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 15, 2010 9:16 PM | Report abuse

OV has to be injured because I think we've rarely seen him play so badly in the past. He's been ineffective and without much energy so far tonight.

Posted by: CDon | April 15, 2010 9:17 PM | Report abuse

Looked to me like Ovie went for the big hit and could not get all of him and bailed out at the last second. Think he was having flashbacks to the kneeing incident and playing it safe?

Posted by: jdove80 | April 15, 2010 9:17 PM | Report abuse

Well, Alex did leave practice early the other day. I wonder if he caught Backstrom's virus? At any rate, I sure hope he breaks out of his mini funk here.

Posted by: jdove80

hate calling them out but they've both had tough games... our two best offensive players have been non factors tonight. One doesn't even has a shot on goal... I wonder how many Sasha has.. not many I bet since he is forcing it.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 15, 2010 9:21 PM | Report abuse

OV's reminding me of Nylander tonight.

Posted by: CDon | April 15, 2010 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 15, 2010 9:23 PM | Report abuse

the funny thing is whichever canadien player said that quote that Verizon Center's really loud but it's not like Montreal... it may be great but Montreal has the second worst home record in the east.. hahah. so helpful, huh?

Posted by: rachel216 | April 15, 2010 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Mike Knuble could be a difference maker in this series.

Posted by: Terptwin | April 15, 2010 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jdove80 | April 15, 2010 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 15, 2010 9:25 PM | Report abuse

I fear an ending similar to the Avalanche v. Sharks game.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 15, 2010 9:26 PM | Report abuse

I don't like our odds with Halek at all. First it's boring to watch a goalie stop everything that comes his way, unless he is yours. But very hot goalies frustrate us, we take penalties and lose energy as we go along. And, worse of all, Halek is better than Theo--at least enough to give them the advantage in OT. What do you think our odds are in OT? But thank God, there is no shoot out, right?

Posted by: caraveli | April 15, 2010 9:27 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: TimDz | April 15, 2010 9:34 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: CDon | April 15, 2010 9:34 PM | Report abuse

OK, we'll take a 15 minute break and come back for more 5 on 4 in OT.
