Caps, Canadiens tied at 1 after one period

The Capitals ended their futility on the power play in this series when Alex Ovechkin collected a pass from Nicklas Backstrom and beat Carey Price at 11 minutes 50 seconds of the first period for a 1-0 lead. Mike Green also had an assist on Ovechkin's third goal of the series.

Washington had been 0-15 with the man advantage, including missing an opportunity earlier in Game 4 tonight at Bell Centre.

The Canadiens came right back roughly a minute later when Mike Cammalleri scored his second goal of the series after Capitals starting goalie Semyon Varlamov was unable to control a rebound. Glen Metropolit, a former Capitals player, and defenseman Roman Hamrlik had assists on the goal.

Varlamov did make several stops from close range later to keep the game tied at 1, and Price did the same as the period wound down.

Montreal outshot Washington 13-9 in the period.

Green is getting most of the attention for his poor play but Schultz seems to make a habit of getting caught doing nothing around the net. He ends up standing by himself just watching the puck and losing awareness of his positioning. He too often fails to take bodies or sticks.

Watching on the internet. So, who was in front of the goal on the Canadians goal? Was that Green? He is stinking up the place AGAIN. WTF. How many shots is he going to get blocked before he learns to maneuver around or pause and shoot over the defensmen? He has no patience whatsoever.

Posted by: rphilli721 | April 21, 2010 7:48 PM

-------------------------------------
Exactly, besides his atrocious "D", why does he take forever to shoot the puck basically ensuring his shot will be blocked --> which too often lead to counter-attacks. I swear he's a good guy, but darn stupid ;) And BB loves him?!

Posted by: tomfoley1 | April 21, 2010 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Maybe I'm being too harsh on Schultz.

It's probably not a lack of effort but rather his slow reaction time. He struggles on bang-bang type plays where there is less time to react to the situation.

When the play slows down and he has time to read and react, he's a pretty effective defenseman and he's gotten much better this season along the boards.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 21, 2010 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, for 7 million a year, Semin should be a playoff player. I'd be willing to bet there are some playoff players available who wouldn't mind getting half that salary. He's so lazy.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 21, 2010 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Greenie looks tentative and nervous...two bad TO's in the Caps zone and a weak attempt on a wide open shot. Schultz also wasn't taking the body or doing anything on the defensive end. I'm nervous every time that pairing is out there since the Canadians have scored almost all of their goals with Schultz and Green on the ice. Boudreau needs to play Poti-Carlson more as well as Corvo-Sloan if the Caps are going to win tonight.

So, I won a Mike Green puck last month (by winning the Caps mobile fantasy for that month - toot toot!). Should I sacrifice it or something? Ever since it arrived in my home, he's been, well, Tyler Sloan.

Agreed about Semin at 7 mil a year, it's time to man up in the playoffs, not wilt under tighter checking. If he does not perform this year, trade him. It's worth the salary cap room to keep Backstrom alone.

Our defense is starting to give up a number of odd-man rushes.

I suppose it would be too much to ask for them to tighten it up in a tie game on the road.

Still not convinced Green isn't trying to play through an injury, but also he was 9th in the entire NHL in minutes of ice time per game this year, 18th in total minutes, and 3rd in average ice time per shift (behind only Kovy and Ovy).

I wonder if he has maybe blown a fuse.

Ugh, not game 1 again -- weak in the middle and wimpy in the neutral zone. The Caps have to force the puck up the middle as they did in game 3. Force the smaller Habs to stop the Caps from rolling them over. Stop passing up the boards -- skate, check, and muck up the crease.

You obviously remember that "injury" excuse last year?

Posted by: tomfoley1 | April 21, 2010 8:20 PM | Report abuse

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't want to hear about anything Green possibly having an injury. At some point, it's just about him learning how to be successful in the playoffs so that he's useful to the team.

And yes, Schultz was +50 in the regular season, but we're seeing from him some of the weakness he has a tendency to exhibit.

Hope the Caps can keep their composure. Looks like another game where the Habs are trying to win the emotional game since they can't keep up with skill wise on the ice

Posted by: RedRedRed | April 21, 2010 8:21 PM | Report abuse

10 hits thru 30 mins of a critical playoff games speaks volumes about this team's commitment to do whatever it takes to win. Other teams are racking up 50 hits in a game. This isn't about "saving" yourself for the next series either. This is just the Caps personality. They're just not a gritty playoff team. They're going to have to finesse their way thru as far as they can go. Their reg season personality has bled over into ze playoffs. I'd say their team last yr and even against Philly 2 yrs ago displayed a lot more tenacity.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 21, 2010 8:21 PM | Report abuse

it was expected that Canadiens will play with their season on the line today. Our guys aren't doing a good job of matching the Canadiens' intensity on the ice tonight. We're waiting for the puck to get to us instead of going after it, and making lazy passes.

A mirror image of Game 1 in my eyes.

Almost 2:1 shots for MTL -- this is absurd. The Caps need to get a chip on their shoulder and play with passion and a sense that they are the better team. Stop the Habs are a great team blah, blah -- play with passion and grit

Great another stupid penalty. Why oh why are they self-destructing?

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | April 21, 2010 8:29 PM | Report abuse

@cstanton1

True. The Caps play down to their perceived competition. I think they're well aware this is a No. 1 vs. No. 8 matchup, so they're not playing as well as they could be. They've a step off/slow tonight so far. They'll be fortunate to get out of this period even or ahead.

Posted by: CDon | April 21, 2010 8:29 PM | Report abuse

Steckel adds some of that intangible energy element to this team.

its funny, you look at the healthy scratches for the Caps - they're all physical players. Walker, Erskine, Steckel, Laing.

Those are arguably 4 of our most physical players. Then you add in Mo who's hurt.

And it looks like the Caps aren't even going to get out of the period even. Montreal is MASSIVELY outplaying the Caps. Pierre said the Canadiens are winning the "I care" battle tonight, and he's absolutely right. You have to be supremely disappointed in the Capitals effort tonight. They finally showed energy on that shift after the Canadiens goal, and they're getting a PP as a result. They need to do that all the time.

Posted by: joek443 | April 21, 2010 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Wow! Green misses an open net, and the Caps have too many men on the ice. That sums up this entire game. Mental makeup. Energy. Alertness. Intelligence. They got none of it this evening.

Posted by: CDon | April 21, 2010 8:37 PM | Report abuse

there are some uncharacteristically dumb things happening

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 21, 2010 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Varly is keeping this thing close!

Come on Caps!

Posted by: dglelite | April 21, 2010 8:37 PM | Report abuse

They dont want to play today, except for Varly.

Posted by: jdove80 | April 21, 2010 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Any one care to predict what BB will say at the break?

Posted by: Section416akatheAlps | April 21, 2010 8:38 PM | Report abuse

omg too many men on our pp........what a brutal display of a lack of intensity.....wake up boys

Posted by: wendel2 | April 21, 2010 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Caps think they're better than they are. Simple as that.

Posted by: CDon | April 21, 2010 8:38 PM | Report abuse

33 to 17 Habs for shots on goal. WTF.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 21, 2010 8:39 PM | Report abuse

why on the power play are they just content to sit there in front of the goal waiting for Montreal to shoot or pass. CHALLENGE THEM DAMNIT!!!!

Yes!

Posted by: jdove80 | April 21, 2010 8:39 PM | Report abuse

There's Green again being lazy and not taking away the stick.

Posted by: visionof75
----------------------------------
At what point is Green's atrocious play attributed to stupidity or inability rather than laziness? Why is he out there at all on 5-5?

Don't mean to be mean-spirited, but don't y'all think Green is just stupid more than anything else?

Posted by: tomfoley1 | April 21, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Gordon and Knuble to the Habs fans.. "SILENCE... I KILL YOU"

Posted by: visionof75 | April 21, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Holy crap I didn't see that goal coming lol. Nice passing there.

Posted by: Thundershock | April 21, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Okayyyyyyy

Posted by: RedRedRed | April 21, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

@Section416akatheAlps

"Flash, you are due. I'm moving you up to the #1 PP unit."

Posted by: StanleyCap | April 21, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

that kicked ass, didn't it?

Posted by: Satchelass | April 21, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Way to go Mike Knuble! Go Caps!

Posted by: MReilly9 | April 21, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Instant silence! Now they cant play like crap and let another 20 shots hit Varly next period.

Posted by: jdove80 | April 21, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

SHORTHANDED WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO knuble and gordon...steckel may sit for a lot of games unless bb decides to rest flash

Varly = the difference-maker in the game

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 21, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Amazing that we are still in this game. Varlamov is standing on his head. They better wake up because they are getting embarrassed.

Posted by: CAPSHOCKEY2 | April 21, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Sorry for my delayed post. Great to see another shortie!

Posted by: Terptwin | April 21, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

can someone explain why chimera was the ONLY one to get a penalty?

my heart can't take this.

Posted by: natresgroup | April 21, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Well one player named Mike showed up.

Guess which one?

Posted by: 202character | April 21, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

HUGE goal. Caps sleepwalking for 2 periods. Varly is playing great. Flash is dead to me.

Posted by: Moose33 | April 21, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

that goal should just deflate the Habs and the Caps should win the 3rd period and the game... who knew the Caps would score a shortie for 2 straight games??

Posted by: joek443 | April 21, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

I love the sound of the Caps crushing the souls of opponents.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 21, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Knubes was a brilliant pick-up. Wish we could clone him.

Posted by: tomfoley1 | April 21, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

I still say this will end with a 4-2 Caps win! Semin or Fehr will get the winner in the third. Varly is playing all-world right now.

Posted by: cbl-pdx | April 21, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

wocoliz: I couldn't stay away from the game tonight...

hope I don't jinx things...

Posted by: TimDz | April 21, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

So Varly has shown up tonight. But not one other player on the Caps team has.

Really makes you wonder about their mental makeup.

They finally showed energy on that shift after the Canadiens goal, and they're getting a PP as a result. They need to do that all the time.

Posted by: CDon | April 21, 2010 8:34 PM

I agree with this post.

We are lucky to be at 2-2. Varlamov has kept us in it. There is a general lack of urgency in our own end.

There are a few players working hard in all 3 zones but that's about it.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 21, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Chrisd3: Cone of Silence - showing your age my friend. Missed it by that much! ;-)

Posted by: Section416akatheAlps | April 21, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

I lost count of the number of times we have turned the puck over at our blue line. And stay out of the damn box!

Posted by: CAPSHOCKEY2 | April 21, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

We need to come out and finish this team off. I don't want them coming back to WAS tied in this series

Posted by: CAPSHOCKEY2 | April 21, 2010 8:44 PM | Report abuse

No matter what happens in the 3rd period, Varlamov is the player of the game. We would be long out of this game if not for him.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 21, 2010 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Gordon has really picked up his game. I guess he is finally healthy. Not falling down on every check like he was.

Posted by: StanleyCap | April 21, 2010 8:45 PM | Report abuse

TimDz, glad you're here!

Posted by: wocoliz | April 21, 2010 8:45 PM | Report abuse

LOL, our short-handed percentage is better than our PP.

Sec416: I'm only old because I'm a Caps fan, which ages you at twice the normal speed.

Posted by: chrisd3 | April 21, 2010 8:46 PM | Report abuse

anything can happen in the 3rd, but did you notice how whichever team comes out firing early, gets tired and loses the game in the end?

Caps outplayed Canadiens in prd1 of game 1, didnt get rewarded for their effort after one, got tired and were outplayed for the rest of the game.

Canadiens came out strong in the next 2 games and lost. And now after expanding all that energy in period2 they are going into the 3rd tied at 2.

Caps skaters have been doing next to null all game, they should outplay the tired Canadiens in the 3rd.

Posted by: OVIwankanOVI | April 21, 2010 8:46 PM | Report abuse

I hope that our strategy of tiring out the Habs in the first two periods pays off in the third...

Posted by: sargeantmofo | April 21, 2010 8:46 PM | Report abuse

tmac, I couldn't agree more about Varly. He deserves a LOT more support than he's getting. Maybe he'll actually get some help in the third.

Posted by: wocoliz | April 21, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

@chrisd3: hahahahahaha! Hub-unit and I have had plenty of "heart attacks" just in this playoff series! Amen, friend..

Posted by: DevilsCapsGal | April 21, 2010 8:54 PM | Report abuse

if we get to vote, I advocate stay here until next period starts

Posted by: Satchelass | April 21, 2010 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Satchelass: Caps are playing one good period per game. Considering the first two, it has to be the 3rd tonight.

Posted by: chrisd3 | April 21, 2010 8:55 PM | Report abuse

If the Habs open things in the third period in a desperate attempt to score and tie up the series they may fatally neglect their D as NO team can out run-and-gun the Caps!

Posted by: MReilly9 | April 21, 2010 8:55 PM | Report abuse

can you imagine this team ever finishing a team off in 4 games so they can conserve energy for the next round? no way. Not if they don't play hard for 60 mins every game.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 21, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse

moving over to Tarik's 2nd period break post...

Posted by: Section416akatheAlps | April 21, 2010 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: chrisd3 | April 21, 2010 8:55 PM | Report abuse

thats exactly right. I really had no hope that this team could suddenly shed their reg season tendencies and start putting together 60 min efforts. And they haven't disappointed. I'd say there has been ZERO uptick overall from the reg season to the playoffs in terms of effort and intensity if you look at the collective periods so far over almost 4 full games.

on a sidenote, the only way Steck gets back in the lineup is if they scratch Flash. Gordo's winning too many faceoffs and he has a point tonight as well. He's pretty entrenched in the lineup right now.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 21, 2010 9:02 PM | Report abuse

I have a theory that Caps pre-game snack of Escargot and Champignons in Garlic Sauce may have been drugged. They're being slowed by spiked snails....

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 21, 2010 9:01 PM | Report abuse

on the other hand, all the Caps have to do is play one good period in the 3rd to steal this game and then somehow find the motivation to put together a strong game 5 at home to close out the series.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 21, 2010 9:05 PM | Report abuse

does this look like a Cup team to anyone, even the most ardent supporters? I'd say this year's overall performance so far is worse than any of the past 2 seasons. They're regressing.

MORE talent seems to equal LESSER effort, go figure.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 21, 2010 9:08 PM | Report abuse

if they played the habs the way they played the Rags last yr, this series would be over in 4.

yes

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 21, 2010 9:17 PM | Report abuse

there ya go! one good period per game and great goaltending is apparently enough to beat a weak opponent!

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 21, 2010 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Way to finish that one off boys. Varlamov was amazing tonight. He kept us in that game when we were basically invisible. Hope Morrison is back Friday.

Posted by: CAPSHOCKEY2 | April 21, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Varly is a clutch player, a real playoff player. So is OV and Backs, so can they talk to Semin about paying the price in the playoffs?

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | April 21, 2010 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Caps u suck! You may win this series in 5 games, why couldn't u sweep? And Semin why did you make a nice lead pass to OV, can't u score on your own? Come on get it together!
