Caps, Canadiens tied at 2 after two

The second period was generally uneventful until late, when the Canadiens had consecutive power plays. During Montreal's first extra-man advantage, Capitals goalie Semyon Varlamov was on his game, stopping mulitple bids from close range.

But on the ensuing power play, Montreal broke through when Brian Gionta poked in a loose puck that had gotten behind Varlamov, and the Canadiens took their first lead of the game, 2-1.

The Capitals had a power-play opportunity of their own late in the period, but it lasted just 1 minute 24 seconds after Alex Ovechkin was called for penalty, making it four and four. Montreal then played the rest of the period with a man advantage and was set to begin the third period with an extra skater and momentum on its side.

But the Capitals tied it in dramatic fashion, when Mike Knuble redirected a feed from Boyd Gordon and beat goalie Carey Price with six seconds to play for a shorthanded goal.

Varlamov was spectacular in the period, stopping 20 of 21 shots, many with his quick glove and from near point-blank distance.

Green is remarkably casual around his own net.

I don't get it.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 21, 2010 8:47 PM | Report abuse

We need to ride the momentum going into the 3rd. Varly has earned the win. Up to the rest of the team to deliver it.

Posted by: cbs75 | April 21, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

I like Green as much as anyone but it's about time BB sat his butt down for a few shifts...

Posted by: joek443 | April 21, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Gene, quick correction. Ovi wasn't called for a penalty: it was a bench minor for too many men on the ice, and Ovi just served it.

Should be an interesting third period.

Posted by: Steph22 | April 21, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Worse period of the playoffs for the Caps. Varly saved 2-3 goals minimum that would have gotten by Theo. Dumb penalties including one while the Caps were on the PP. BB needs to light a fire under his team because we were dominated int he 2nd period. Green and Schultz were again on the ice for another goal. Sloan looked good again in the 2nd period and it doesn't look like we had much dropoff without Morrisson.

LETS GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: wizfan89 | April 21, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

How about that, Carlson with a point on that Knuble goal.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 21, 2010 8:50 PM | Report abuse

The Caps (except for Varly) should be well rested. Time to bring it and finish these guys off.

Posted by: zmega | April 21, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Once again we're relying on the 3rd period to bail us out.

Posted by: RedRedRed | April 21, 2010 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Carlson with playoff point #4 in game #4, and yet another +.

Posted by: youaresquishy | April 21, 2010 8:54 PM | Report abuse

My concern is that the Caps tend to play too risky on the road, regardless of the score.

It's a tie game and you would think that a team would think defense first, making sure not to get caught being overly aggressive and giving up numbers the other way.

It seems like the Caps are go, go, go... regardless of the game situation.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 21, 2010 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Hmm... i'm thinking Knuble and Gordon work well together on the PK

Posted by: washcaps | April 21, 2010 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Still can't get over the saves Varles made. Holy Shiet!

Posted by: tomfoley1 | April 21, 2010 8:55 PM | Report abuse

WOW what a steaming pile of a period for the Caps. They should have some mo from that goal, but BB and OV should be in some players faces after that period. How a team can be so flat in the playoffs is beyond me.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | April 21, 2010 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Its good the Caps take risks on the road..it often works out for them because the pressure is on the other team.

Posted by: yesisaiditfirst | April 21, 2010 8:57 PM | Report abuse

tmac2yao I think sitting back to much can really hurt teams. You saw it all the time in the regular season with teams giving up 1-2 goals late and losing leads and sometimes games in regulation. I also think that this team needs to get their D into the rush more in order to get more scoring chances since they currently are not getting much at all.

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 21, 2010 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Come on CAPS!

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 21, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, I wouldn't blame Ovi for the sixth man penalty, since he was already on the ice. I think they just had him serve it because he doesn't usually play the PK.

Posted by: 202character | April 21, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse

If the Habs open things up in a desperate attempt to score and tie up the series they may fatally neglect their D as NO team can out run-and-gun the Caps!

Posted by: MReilly9 | April 21, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Carlson and Poti now both at +6, co-leading the league's defensemen in playoff +/-.

Posted by: youaresquishy | April 21, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Semin is playing to get a goal rather than the team scoring. Worries me...

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan1 | April 21, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Knuble looks like he wants to play now.

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 21, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Knuble - picking up where he left off! Keep crashing the net!

Posted by: Section416akatheAlps | April 21, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Of course some of our guys who are on the ice for the PK don't really play the PK.

Posted by: 202character | April 21, 2010 8:59 PM | Report abuse

Semin goal #1, coming up.

Semin seems to show signs of life...

Posted by: Section416akatheAlps | April 21, 2010 9:01 PM | Report abuse

The problem I see with Semin right now is it looks like he is trying to score a highlight reel goal every time instead of just scooting the puck.

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 21, 2010 9:01 PM | Report abuse

Varlamov for MVP, he has singlehandedly kept Caps in the game both tonight and two nights ago (1st period he got hammered and stopped 10 shots, leaving enough time for the Caps to rally in 2nd period).

Posted by: youaresquishy | April 21, 2010 9:10 PM | Report abuse

Great. Why coulnd't Flash or Semin head to the dressing room instead of Laich.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 21, 2010 9:10 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin is making it easy on their defensemen by skating or shooting right into them.

They deserve some credit but he is also not doing anything to make it difficult for them.

Go around them. Dump it in and chase it. Don't try to go through a wall every time.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 21, 2010 9:10 PM | Report abuse

Didnt he catch the puck and play it with his stick first? Why the hand pass call?

The Montreal fans are reminding me of Carolina Hurricanes fans when they first got their team down here. They used to think every little contact was a penalty, so they were constantly booing officials. They've learned since those early days. But these Canadiens fans are just as bad as early 'Canes fans. I thought Montreal supporters were supposed to be some of the more intelligent in the game.

Nice poke by Varly...

Posted by: Section416akatheAlps | April 21, 2010 9:12 PM | Report abuse

Varly has blocked 33-35. Great percentage but that doesn't even tell the whole story, since so many of those were close-range high-percentage shots.

Nelson Pyatt, center,: 32 goals, 27 assists, and -70 in 93 games with the Capitals between the 1974-75 and 1975-76 seasons.

Those were the first two Capitals seasons. They won 19 games in those two years combined.

Nelson was -56 for the Capitals in 1975-76, worst on the team, and 2nd worst in the NHL only to Kansas City Scouts (nka New Jersey Devils) defenseman Larry Johnston.

Caps game plan for Game 5

-Play sloppy for a period or 2
-Have goaltender stand on his head
-Take dumb penalty
-Shortie by Knuble or Gordon
-Floodgates open

Buffalo and Boston are going to OT, tied 2-2.

Posted by: MReilly9 | April 21, 2010 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Was that really Corvo's fault?

He seemed to play it the right way.

How did they get a 2-on-1 in the first place?

And despite being far and away the player of the game, Varlamov could've come out further with Corvo cutting off the passing lane.

Sloan got worked by Moen in the 3rd. Moen skated right around him and went to the rack. And Moen is not exactly Patrick Kane speed-wise. Hopefully, ShaMo is back Friday. It looked like he got speared in the mid-section Monday night.

Posted by: natresgroup | April 21, 2010 9:44 PM

Thanks, I didn't think it possibly be on Corvo.

As zmega pointed out, Sloan also got worked in a similar fashion by Moen earlier in the game.

I like Sloan's speed and willingness to bang but he is fundamentally unsound as a defensemen and is prone to making bad decisions with the puck.

I like his versatility but I prefer to see him as a checking line forward than as a defenseman.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 21, 2010 9:53 PM | Report abuse

What a move by BB to switch the goaltenders. From what I've seen the past couple of seasons, Theo is good for too many soft goals and would've wilted in the second period tonight. In other words, I haven't seen him stand on his head for a period like Varly did - ever. And, Carlson, what can you say...he looks like the future franchise defensemen and Green looks, well, Green, again in the playoffs.

Posted by: rphilli721 | April 21, 2010 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Hilarious getting 2 empty netters! Sloan needs to go back to the press box! I am willing to forget that 2nd period and focus on the awesomeness that was the third period!

Posted by: capscoach | April 21, 2010 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Carey Price stopped 32 shots in his first start of the series for Montreal. Price, who replaced Jaroslav Halak in the second period Monday, was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct when he fired a puck toward the Capitals players celebrating Chimera's goal.

Price drew another unsportsmanlike conduct minor following Backstrom's goal.

The only complaint I really had was that the passing was horrendous the first 2 periods by us. Seem it was lazy & not crisp @ all.

Kept getting away from the receiver.

also -
As much as I like Flash, he has not played well @ all & that giveaway/penalty was a sin.

I like Sloan's speed and willingness to bang but he is fundamentally unsound as a defensemen and is prone to making bad decisions with the puck.

----------------------

thats why he was better as a 4th line forward in Hershey than he ever was as a D.

He can skate well, he's mobile, but he's like a fish out of water playing D. He's really better at just dumping the puck and going and getting it on the forecheck. He played forward for us also briefly on the 4th line and he wasn't bad.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 21, 2010 10:00 PM | Report abuse

I've been watching hockey since at least 1976, and I can't say I can remember ever seeing a player on a bench slash someone on the ice. I'm sure it's probably happened before. But that's pretty chickens___t.

I will be very shocked if Carey Price is not suspended for at least one game. I doubt it's wise to just slap him on the wrist for that. If you're wise, and you're a hockey league, you want to establish a very clear line between slashing while on the ice and a goaltender slashing with his big goalie stick from the bench.

Backstrom smiled afterwards and didn't seem hurt at all by it, but I don't think that will matter to the NHL. It certainly wasn't, like, a love tap or anything. Taking this kind of action lightly sets a pretty terrible precedent.

Posted by: youaresquishy | April 21, 2010 10:00 PM | Report abuse

I guess the pre-injury Varly is back. Kudos to BB for recognizing it when amateurs like me did not.

The rope-a-dope strategy of taking their best shot for two periods and then pulling it out at the end worked to night. I don't think it is a recipe for long term success.

Man, just hoping they would weather the 2nd, and Bamm/Knuble! Thanks Varly, Ovi, Knuble, Gordo -- great effort.

Personally, I'm not getting down on Sloan at all -- he played fine for his first ever playoff game. And please don't rage on Corvo for the last Habs goal -- he did fine; blame the rest of the Caps hanging out somewhere near the blue line.

I'm glad I wasn't here during the second period to hear how bad the Caps are. Yes, they stood around too much, but thanks to Varly they made it. They are a dominating team and it's reflected on the scoreboard, and that's against a Habs team playing their hearts out.

Posted by: Justafan | April 21, 2010 10:16 PM | Report abuse

@ablake70

I hope the Caps have an easier time in Game 5 at VC than they had today.

Today's game was definitely closer than the final score. I'd say the shortie goal by Knuble was definitely a momentum changer during a 2nd period that didn't go right for the Caps with Montreal getting scads of shots on goal and several power plays.

Glad Semin finally got a point. Okay, he didn't score the goal but set the action in motion, so to speak, for the goal ahead goal.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | April 21, 2010 10:26 PM | Report abuse

@zmega

LOL.

Point taken. I believe this is such a clearcut cause for a suspension that there's just no way the NHL will make the wrong call here.
