Caps Claim Staffan Kronwall (Updated)

The Caps just picked up Staffan Kronwall off waivers from the Maple Leafs/Marlies. The defenseman is headed for Washington.

Kronwall, 26, is believed to earn the league minimum. But since he was claimed on re-entry waivers, the Caps are only on the hook for half of his remaining salary.

Here are his stats (courtesy of hockeydb.com):

Something has to definitely be up...Now we'd have 9 D-men up here practicing if Pothier is included. Something fishy is going on.

Posted by: ThePat | February 6, 2009 1:01 PM | Report abuse

1) Suddenly a glut of defensemen. Yes, something is up. Hopefully not another Poti injury

After last night's debacle, I'd welcome a 1-legged defenseman. Can't be worse!

Good. Now BB can sit down Mike Green. What a prima dona. He thinks he's Paul Coffey. At least Coffey would throw a check every other game.

Posted by: terenceburke | February 6, 2009 1:04 PM | Report abuse

Interesting... very interesting...

Now. Are we going to claim ourselves a backup goalie in the form of Manny Legace, or not? Is he worth it? He's got a low cap hit. His numbers haven't been that great for St. Louis this year, but they have been good in the past...

Posted by: irockthered | February 6, 2009 1:04 PM | Report abuse

Mike Green is not going to sit.

Posted by: SoylentMikeGreen | February 6, 2009 1:05 PM | Report abuse

Hey terenceburke, you're misguided.

And whoa! Swedish defender! Alright! I'm excited!

Posted by: _jordan | February 6, 2009 1:06 PM | Report abuse

Tarik,

When you say "Heading to Washington", do you literally mean to be on the Caps roster, or just in the organization?

Posted by: matucker | February 6, 2009 1:06 PM | Report abuse

Hey, as long as Erskine's stickin' around, everything will be fine

Posted by: boyd_gordon_shootout_specialist | February 6, 2009 1:06 PM | Report abuse

au revoir Schultzy!!!! Please dont let the door hit you on the way out!

But seriously, at the very least Shultz needs to be sent down. I have never disliked a player more than our #55 (except for Jagr of course.)

He is headed to the Caps.

Byebye Morrison, hello Eric Cole? I know I am dreaming, but it would be a great way to end this miserable work week.

I like Osala.

But my guess is that if the Capitals call up a forward, Giroux will get the honors.

ThePat,

Oilers just lost Lubo and Tom Gilbert, both D, to injury..!!

Posted by: _jordan | February 6, 2009 1:10 PM | Report abuse

Someone turned the mixing bowl to high and the flour has gone everywhere. We've got us a big ol' mess in the Caps kitchen. I'm very interested in how this shakes out over the next 24 hours.

Posted by: saintex | February 6, 2009 1:10 PM | Report abuse

Can we go back to talking about chants? This stuff is so boring.

Posted by: saintex | February 6, 2009 1:12 PM | Report abuse

@ jordan,

I know, thats why I am praying that this is where it is headed. GMGM do something special please.

Posted by: ThePat | February 6, 2009 1:13 PM | Report abuse

Why the excitement? I am missing something. Has the guy played in the NHL yet? Don't we have some very good prospects in the AHL? or is the excitement because of another good prospect? Someone help. Explain.

Posted by: hock1 | February 6, 2009 1:14 PM | Report abuse

Kronwall:

(according to NHL.com)

6'3" 209 lbs. Lefty Age: 26

Doesn't have any stats posted from this year, but had 3G and 7A and was a +14 with 14 PIM in 26 the minors last year and was a -2 (0 points) and had 7 PIM in 18 games with the Leafs in 07-08.

Posted by: dcox50 | February 6, 2009 1:15 PM | Report abuse

No real excitement, just we now have 9 D-Men in Washington and that is just a little odd. So the hope is another move is coming, eventhough it is doubtful.

Posted by: ThePat | February 6, 2009 1:16 PM | Report abuse

@hock1,

I'm guessing that since Alzer has been called up and Kronwall claimed - and is heading straight to D.C. - that we all think something is afoot with the two spare defensemen we know have (eight on the roster). If this is a move to open up trading two defensemen somewhere as part of a package then we're imagining who, where, and what.

Posted by: saintex | February 6, 2009 1:16 PM | Report abuse

So cap hit-wise...does his full salary go on the books or the half-salary we pay him?

Posted by: ThisGuy | February 6, 2009 1:17 PM | Report abuse

Kronwall has played 42 games with with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League this season and has seven goals and 18 assists with a plus-1 rating. He played in 18 games in the NHL and was a minus-2 in 2007-08 for the Maple Leafs.

Posted by: ThePat | February 6, 2009 1:18 PM | Report abuse

Haha... 6'4" Kronwall, 209 pounds, 52 NHL games, 21 minutes of penalty, 1 NHL career point.... a real physical player.... Maybe we can make him play with Schultz on our Short hand... The Twin Towers....

Posted by: atybat | February 6, 2009 1:18 PM | Report abuse

hopefully this...

to Anaheim:
Morrisonn
Lepisto

Godfrey or another non blue chip prospect!
2009 1st

to Caps:
Chris Pronger

just do it GMGM...

disclaimer, I have no basis for this except that Pronger might be availble per news reports

Bingo. A tender to back up Theo is the most likely move IMO, although I could see a trade for Cole or someone of his ilk.

Posted by: thegr8one | February 6, 2009 1:21 PM | Report abuse

saintex,
Interesting. I guess we have to wait and see. I still think we have some very good guys at the AHL level. The good thing is that we are acquiring a guy cheap, young and with a possible upside. I am not ready to sit anyone for him. This guy is coming from an organization that is last in goals allowed (I think) and he didn't even make the team.

Posted by: ThisGuy | February 6, 2009 1:24 PM | Report abuse

@VTBonovox: I don't think you can trade a player right off of waivers without the former team having some sort of say in it... and it a trade is going down, you have to think it'd be for D, not O... we have plenty of quality O... but not the D

Posted by: FrankM73 | February 6, 2009 1:24 PM | Report abuse

Things we should get for the playoffs...

Niclas Havelid, from Atlanta. He's a big, playoff proven (Stanley Cup finals with the Ducks 02-03), a leader, and relatively cheap.

Keith Tkachuk, from St. Louis, a proven player that has made a living crashing the net.

Manny Legace, fills the hole while BJ's gone and Varly heals, should keep us under the cap.

I think Kronwall has been picked up and coming the Caps because he's part of another deal. We don't need another NHLer in our line-up. We have other good blue liners on the farm that we could have called up instead.

The D pairings Tarik mentioned have worked. Alzner should settle Jurcina down and Green works much better with Schultz than Erskine.

All of this is my opinion, as is the stating the Green bashing is unnecessary. The 3rd period was a different game, Green fixed his positioning and BB made constant adjustments (even though some said he didn't in a previous thread). The Caps are a measely 33-16-4, what are we going to do, our team is horrible? BTW, that's sarcasm.

Posted by: fanohock1 | February 6, 2009 1:24 PM | Report abuse

Definately some big changes coming shortly, it looks like. Someone in the last thread asked if the Kings played an especially cherry-picking style. The answer is no in the classic sense (they don't play like Jagr or Kovaluchuk only at the far blue line waitng). But they do look for a lot of long passes to guys in full stride. That's what nailed the Caps. In most of the replays, there were two defensemen back there, but far apart and couldn't close the gap to the middle before the guy got the shot off. Green caught Armstrong (I think) but also took a penalty in doing it.

Green and Alzner are pretty decent skaters. The rest of the D aren't terribly fast. They want to find somebody quicker than who they have (in Erksine's case, they could hire that turtle from the Comcast commercials and it would be an upgrade.)

Posted by: oldtimehockey | February 6, 2009 1:26 PM | Report abuse

I meant to say we don't need another AHLer in our line-up with other good blue liners on the farm.

I believe it's half because it's re-entry.

And yes, the Rangers are apparently working on bringing Avery back.

Posted by: Section117 | February 6, 2009 1:37 PM | Report abuse

Good. Now BB can sit down Mike Green. What a prima dona. He thinks he's Paul Coffey. At least Coffey would throw a check every other game.

Posted by: terenceburke | February 6, 2009 1:04 PM

Coffey makes Green look like Langway, haha

Kronwall's a good pickup. Good size and throws some big open ice hits. He's a better defender than most of our other guys simply because he's not used to cheating on the offensive end. And that falls on Boudreau. He's brought this high risk mentality to this team that has certainly helped it score more goals but he's swung the pendulum too far the other way. His defense now thinks they can cheat on every play, hence the multiple breakways and shorthanded goals.

Posted by: cstanton1 | February 6, 2009 1:37 PM | Report abuse

And just so I can learn: if Kronwall was trying to clear waivers and Edmonton (with two defensemen down and out) and Washington both wanted him, how does that work? I mean, if Edmonton wanted some d-men (just postulating trades) why wouldn't they claim him and then call up someone?

Posted by: saintex | February 6, 2009 1:38 PM | Report abuse

Jesus, FrankM73, why not just give them the keys to the place, too? I'm glad you're not the GM.

Posted by: Section117 | February 6, 2009 1:42 PM | Report abuse

Augh.

I was going to take the day off because I was so steamed about the first two periods last night, but the news about Kronwall dragged me back, somehow.

It's absolutely amazing the jokers that come crawling out of the woodwork after a loss. They're kind of like cockroaches.

Atrocious D last night. Simply atrocious. It improved in the third, but too late. More rotten penalties. Nuff said.

Hey folks, if you post rumors, post links or expect them to be ignored as BS. Of course, if that's what you want, carry on :)

Legace? You've got to be kidding me. You thought Theo's stats were bad? There's a reason St. Louis waived him. Leave him where he is. That said, we probably will be in the market for a goalie, pending how long Johnson is expected to take to recover. We can hang with Neuvirth/Varlamov for the rest of the regular season, mostly, but if Johnny isn't going to be ready for the playoffs, then we need to get someone in here and used to the team now.

Gotta admit that this deal looks pretty good from Kronwall's chair, though. From Toronto's system right up to Washington? He's got to be pretty stoked.

Posted by: kittypawz | February 6, 2009 1:42 PM | Report abuse

His cap hit is going to be like nothing since it's half of the league minimum salary, AND prorated.

Posted by: _jordan | February 6, 2009 1:43 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: armonroe | February 6, 2009 1:44 PM | Report abuse

Since Kronvall is on re-entry waivers, the Caps are only responsible for half of his salary on the Cap hit. He's not making much more than the minimum.

There is something going on. The entire league knows the Caps need an experienced back-up goaltender, and teams are doing their best to offer up their back-ups. St. Louis waived Manny Legace today, and Atlanta is, I'm sure shopping Moose Hedberg. Ottawa is trying to unload Gerber, and I'm sure Columbus might be willing to move Paschal Leclaire. What teams *need* out there are defensemen, and the Caps have some defensemen that can be traded and have value (Schultz, Morrisonn, Erskine, Jurcina and now Kronwall, and they can also trade Lepisto in Hershey).

The Caps are very unlikely to trade Green, Alzner or Poti. You keep who you love and trade who you like.

Something is going to happen in the next 24 hours or so I suspect, as they will likely want someone here before tomorrow's game (or, at worst, before the Ranger game on Wednesday).

Posted by: MikeL-Caps91 | February 6, 2009 1:44 PM | Report abuse

I don't feel that my clapping and chanting were up to speed last night. I know, it was a tough night and I was stuck in a suite (BTW, you can't hear crap from there), and just didn't perform. I don't think it's the system, I was just a lazy bastard. I'm benching myself.

Posted by: saintex | February 6, 2009 1:46 PM | Report abuse

This is an interesting move. Maybe he was just picked up because the price was right but the Caps should be looking to make a move for a high profile defensive defenseman. I'm not sure how this helps them out other than adding another defenseman to a filled lineup.

Legacy would be a good pickup if they could afford him.

Posted by: Stu_c | February 6, 2009 1:47 PM | Report abuse

Well, this turned out to be another exciting report by Tarik, I will be looking forward to the next post.

Posted by: hock1 | February 6, 2009 1:48 PM | Report abuse

Also, I gotta wonder, on a totally unrelated note - how does the trade / citizenship/authorization-to-work thing work in the NHL? We've got players from all over Europe and North America being traded back and forth between Canada and the US on a day or two's notice. Anyone who has ever tried to get authorization to work in another country knows that work visas usually don't happen that fast, if they do at all! The INS, Canada's equivalent, and the NHL must have some kind of expedited arrangement.

I felt bad, but at the same time, it was FUNNY stuff. Of course, now I look at it, maybe last night was my fault :(

I'll bench myself, too.

Oh man, the waiver wire. I remember all the gems GM plucked off the waiver wire. I think we even got some coaches off of it, too. Sometimes.
Some deals are too good to pass up. I'm not sure where Kronwall is right now, as a player. Maybe he was someone the Caps had their eye on in the draft, and he suddenly popped back onto GMGM's page. Maybe Hershey needs some shoring up for their playoff run. They could make a go at the championship. Just because he plays a game or two in Washington doesn't mean he wont end up in Hershey. Maybe the Caps are trading for Ohlund and Vancouver insisted on getting a defenseman back, but they didn't say a Caps defenseman, so the genie ref is making them go through with a bum deal.
Maybe maybe maybe

Posted by: oo7 | February 6, 2009 1:56 PM | Report abuse

We get Knonwall for 1/2 of 487,500 prorated.

And we recall Alzner.

Who are we trading?

Also, if claiming off waivers is driven by record worst to first there are a lot of teams that passed on this guy for a pretty low $ hit.

Interesting development since I stepped away for lunch....I've got to think more moves are coming. Intrigued to see what happens next.

In cstanton1's and terenceburke's opinion this Kronwall guy is obviously way better than Mike Green.

In my opinion cstanton1 & terenceburke are retarded.

I've mentioned this before, but it's funny how these cockroaches only crawl out after a loss. Where were they when Green had an amazing game and was named the #1 star?

There are 29 GMs in the NHL who would trade their mother and their firstborn for Mike Green.
