A banner regular season

(Illustration by Jon Wile/The Washington Post)

[Yes, they're the Eastern Conference regular season champs, so the middle banner isn't entirely accurate, but the banners aren't real in the first place, so, you know.]

The Caps made history last night, clinching the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference for the first time thanks to New Jersey's loss to Philadelphia. Two (regular season) goals accomplished, one to go.

*More on being No. 1 from DC Landing Strip,, CSN, Storming the Crease.

Caps-Pens at Heinz Field?

*The Caps and Pens could play at Heinz Field for the 2011 Winter Classic, but...

*...Caps fans are not pleased, according to our poll (and the comments section). Really? An outdoor game between the league's marquee teams isn't watchable if it's in Pittsburgh? Come on now.

*More on the possible venue from the Post-Gazette and Tribune-Review.

Honorable mentions: etriscari ("I need a Cup holder thiiiiis Big!"), plovino1 ("In a futile attempt to charm the heavily pro-Penguins officials, Bruce Boudreau breaks into song, singing the aria "La Donna E Mobile" from Verdi's opera, "Rigoletto". The officials were not swayed, and in retaliation, placed all but one Capitals player in the penalty box, resulting in a short handed goal by Alex Semin.")

Thanks for all the great entries. We'll do it again sometime soon.

Lindsey....a great morning reading list. Not much work getting done for a while.

I think we all know that a Caps v pens Winter Classic would be good for the game, and of course it's watchable. I'll watch it from the stands. It's just that I'm sick and tired of NBC's and the NHL's hard on for the penguins.

BTW, as I was looking at the 3 banners at the top of this post, the Weagle started to remind me of BWI Airport, with the Capitol in relief like that.

The Caps are gonna have to win the Prince of Wales trophy to get that Eastern Conference Champs banner. I say we add a Stanley Cup Champs banner as well! It makes me shudder when they show the rafters in Carolina and TB with their banners, so let's add one of our own!

I don't think they get the banner for being the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference. I thought the Caps would have to win the Eastern Conference in the play-offs before they could raise the Eastern Conference banner. Am I wrong?

Great article by the PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW on OVI...

I think the banner should read Eastern Conference Regular Season Champions..Anyways who the hell cares about regular season, I am ready for the playoffs. While all these regular season accomplishments mean a great deal for the franchise and building a fan base, the playoff are a entirely new ball game, records and stats mean nothing.. Just b/c you do great in regular season that means nothing, just ask San Jose or Boston last year... Let’s not over look round 1!

Be thankful for what you have, or you'll be stuck with a Hanlon type coach if you keep up the booing of the best team in Caps history.

When I watch Caps home games on TV I mute the sound, because I don't want to hear spoiled fans boo. It's better that way.

Bottom line, quit being so spoiled. Most of you are johnny-come-latelies who weren't around during the Cassidy/Hanlon years. Because we're winning doesn't mean that whatever you do is right. Don't be like Penguin fans.

Good job, Fanofhock1! That's a great caption.

I'd like to know why Pittsburgh press found out about Ovi's dinner invites and not the Post.

Strip the weagle off, use Colorado Avalanche Colors, and these mock-ups would be a perfect match for our current banners.

Lindsay, lots of Caps fans don't think a game vs Pens and Caps isn't watchable because it's in Pittsburgh. The problem is the Pens just played in a Winter Classic, why do they get another one, at home no less, before the Rangers even get 1? I don't like this one bit.

it's not just hockey, the NBA X-mas games almost always feature the Lakers and the Celtics...

I agreed with CoCaps08 on this totally...

The Rangers should get one before any other team that has already played gets a second one...

Caps and Rangers at Yankee Stadium sounds like a winenr to me...

or Caps and Rangers at RFK! but am unsure of the demolition date for RFK...

I think as a general rule (even though I'm a Caps fan) is the farther north the better. I don't think they should worry about proximity to either team's fan base.

Would love to see this one at State College - much, much better venue than Heinz field and the sightlines would be fantastic...
