Caps complete regular-season trifecta

(Illustration by Jon Wile/The Washington Post)

Here's a short roundup of Caps-related reading material to get the day started:

*Southeast Division? Check. Eastern Conference? Check. Presidents' Trophy? Check.

*Mike Green is putting on a late-season push to earn the title of top defenseman in the NHL, a bid supported by growing maturity and strong statistics.

*Are the Caps overrated? (Nope.) (D.C. Sports Bog)

*Ted Leonsis thinks R.J. Umberger should mind his own business. And he's rubber and Umberger's glue, and stuff. (Ted's Take)

*More on that here. (Puck Daddy)

*Rodney Dangerfield Ted Leonsis on respect. (Ted's Take)

*On clinching the Presidents' Trophy: Ed Frankovic, CapsBlog, Japers' Rink, Fanhouse, RMNB, DC Landing Strip.

*Who's the best No. 8? (RMNB)

*Busy week ahead. (Hockey Mom)

*Weekly snapshot. (Storming the Crease)

*Is Ovechkin Batman? (Kukla's/Boston Globe)

*It's all about Game 7. (Peerless)

More to come from the morning skate ahead of tonight's home game against Boston.

I'm so proud of this team, i really am hoping we can go all the way with this and finally bring the Cup to DC to get another first in the best Caps season ever. Ovie, Backie, Knuble, Laich, Flash, Semin, Fehr, Steckel, Brads, Gordo, Sloan, Green, Belanger, Chimera, Walker, S. Morrison, B. Morrison, Poti, Erskine, Schultz, Juice, Laing, Theo, Varly, and Carlson...LET'S WIN THE CUP!!!!

Hershey has pulled the same trifecta in the AHL.

Way to build a program and not just a team, GMGM!

Congratulations to all the Capitals' players, owners, management, coaches, and support staff! Great accomplishments. Great team!

Now, the Caps need to get used to NOT being the underdogs---a different mind set can be adopted. As in "we OWN this sport!" Let's go Caps!

Even though I missed some much needed sleep last night to finish watching the Avs beat the Sharks it was worth it. We Caps fans are truly getting spoiled. The Caps have been struggling of late, but that it relative to what we expect from the Caps. Some say the Caps backed into the Conference's 1st seed, and now other's imply they have backed into the President's trophy. Here's a fun fact Caps fans. Even though the Caps have been playing rough by their standards they have the 2nd best record in the last 10 games. The only team that has earned more points in the standings in the last 10 games is Detroit, and they have earned 16. The Caps have earned 15.

The surging Rangers? They have earned 2 less points than our struggling Caps.

I slept good last night knowing the Caps have locked home ice for as long as they are in the playoffs. Hopefully that ends with Lord Stanley's Cup being picked up by Ovechkin.

The players may not care but this week I have my fingers crossed that:

- first and foremost suffer no injuries
- Ovi locks up the Art Ross
- Ovi locks up the Rocket Richard
- Backs finishes with more points than Crosby
- Green backs his 20th goal
- the PP finishes #1
- the PK sort outs its issues
- Theo and Varly have strong weeks to head into the playoffs with confidence

The Norris trophy for Green would be nice, too, fanohock1!

Posted by: dccitizen1 | April 5, 2010 8:08 AM | Report abuse

Terrific accomplishment. Wish I would be there tonight to cheer on the Presidents' Trophy champions.

Someone brought this up before, but the banner claiming Eastern Conference Champions isn't correct, is it? Don't you win that appellation after winning the third round of the playoffs? All we clinched a while back was Best Record in Conference, not Conference Champions.

What say you Lindsay?

Posted by: Sonyask | April 5, 2010 8:09 AM | Report abuse

fanohock1 - I have never agreed more with another's comments. Despite the perceived drought, our boys are coming away with points and it says a lot when a team can win in any manner. In a way, I am not as focused on Ovie locking up the Ross and Richard as much as I am seeing Backstrom surpass Crosby. Now, on to the Cup!

Posted by: gonchpup | April 5, 2010 8:26 AM | Report abuse

Sonyask: You are right. The Eastern Conference Championship banner is earned by the team that represents the Eastern Conference in the Stanley Cup Finals.

RJ Umberger is a tool. So, the Caps played a meaningless game against a bottom feeder, on the road, and won. The CBJs just got done beating the Blackhawks (2nd best team in the West and 3rd best in the League) in a home and home 8-3 and 4-2. So what does that say about the West?

Well RJ's number are OK. Good enough for 6th in goals on our Caps, tied with Fleishman at 22 goals, and 6th in points with 54. Nice when a 3rd line NHLer critiques the Caps.

@ sonyask

Yes, I believe that you are correct. All we have done is won the Conference in the regular season (which means home ice in all playoff series vs. the East). If we win three rounds of the Playoffs and make the Cup Finals, then we in fact would be the Eastern Conference Champions.

Posted by: SuperZ3383 | April 5, 2010 8:38 AM | Report abuse

All we have done is earned an extra home game in every series and the perceived advantage to jump out strong with the crowd behind you.

Otherwise it's worth less then a cup of coffee in a 6 game series...

The real season starts soon...

I dont anticipate the remaining 4 games being partiucarly pretty. I just want to see a healthy roster come Sunday night.

I think the players will check out for the rest of the week, deservedly so.

It will be relaxing to watch the Caps this week not caring what the outcome is....letting my finger nails grow out long for the playoffs.

Posted by: Redskins2Win | April 5, 2010 9:20 AM | Report abuse

Yeah, I hate home games. Let's play them all on the road.

Blah blah blah.

Anyone who doesn't think having home-ice is worth something is crazy. Does it mean you win a series, no (lost 2 to open v. Rangers - won series; won 2 to open v. Pens - lost series), but there is no other option than to want home ice. None.

Great season, ready for the playoffs.

Posted by: saintex | April 5, 2010 9:21 AM | Report abuse

And, let's not doctor numbers. Since conference playoffs began 15 years ago, a #1 seed has won 40% of the Stanley Cups. That's the number. It's not a "9 of 15" years the #1 hasn't won. The numbers are:

#1 - 6 Cups
#2 - 4 Cups
#3 - 2 Cups
#4 - 2 Cups
#5 - 1 Cup

Where do you want to be seeded? I'll wait.

Congratulation Caps!

... and suffer no injuries ...

The focal point shall not be on individual accolades - even it would be nice for Ovi, Backs, Green and all the others - but on winning 16 games during the next weeks starting April, 12.

... for the upcoming game against the "team-which-name-shall-not-be-named" ...
I love this one:

@ Fanohock

Add on to your list that Semin gets #39 and #40. Alot of people give him a bad rap on here because of the penalties and such. I believe that he's as talented if not more then Ov in regards to skill.

Posted by: ludeman95 | April 5, 2010 9:26 AM | Report abuse

RJ who?

A few here advocated his acquisition during the trading deadline.

Not after this - I would hope.

So will BB rest the guys the last four regular season games?

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 5, 2010 9:45 AM | Report abuse

If I wasn't concerned with Ovie v. Cindy goals or Backs v. Cindy points, I would love to see GMGM send the Bears to Pitt to play on Tuesday.

TEB, I love you man, but you gotta stop with this Eastern Conference Champs nonsense. We cannot claim that title until we earn the Wales Trophy. If the Caps fall in the playoffs, it would be seriously pathetic to raise an "Eastern Conference Regular Season Champs" banner into the VC rafters. They can stick that one next to the WNBA banners.

Southeast Division: Check

Presidents Trophy: Check

Prince of Wales Trophy: Pending

Stanley Cup: Pending

LET'S GO CAPS!!!!!!!

I think Knuble should get a night off this week. I was thinking the Atlanta game on Friday so he can have Wednesday through Saturday off. He is older and could use the extra rest before the playoffs start to get him a little fresher.

Put Fehr on the 1st line for that game, have Walker on line 3 and keep the 4th line as is.

While you are all technically correct in pointing out the Conference Championship is claimed in the playoffs, Lindsay did put "Regular Season Trifecta" in her headline. Let's give her a break, we all understand what she means, and spend a few days just enjoying the record-breaking and historic season the Caps have had. Next week we can all start worrying again.

Home ice not worth anything in the playoffs? The Presidents' Trophy not worth anything? Ted may talk, but I guarantee you it's worth something that hasn't been mentioned in the discussion:

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Home games = $$$ for the organization. Deeper playoff run = $$$ for the organization. Presidents' Trophy = $350K for the organization. Is it a king's ransom, no, but it pays for an injury replacement. Yeah, home ice is good - Ted deserves to make money with what he's put together, and the more home games we have, the more money the org makes. Those of you wanting to pay Backstrom - this is where the money to keep the Super Swede comes from.

Oh, and, I heard the Caps have a pretty tough building to play in. Might help them a little in an otherwise even contest. Something about last line change and last stick on the ice on a draw, too.

The NHL.com website had not updated the President’s Trophy page since the 2007-08 season. Interestingly enough, Detroit won it two years ago, clinching the Presidents' Trophy following a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Detroit then went on to win the Stanley Cup.

I wonder how the Caps will play against the Bruins - a potential candidate for the first SC round.

Will it be just a hard fought game because the Bruins have to have all possible points?
Will the players from both sides trying to make "statements"?
Will there be a lot of cheap shots?
Will BB play it save without too many minutes for the top lines?

...

I am not a bumper sticker kind of guy, but for those who are, I think that illustration above would make a nice one.

Posted by: hock1 | April 5, 2010 11:03 AM | Report abuse

One more thing. I think that the President's Trophy should read 2009-1010 NHL Champions, it will reflect the real accomplishment of the regular season.

Posted by: hock1 | April 5, 2010 11:09 AM | Report abuse

People, people, not real banners, and I clearly stated "REGULAR SEASON." Not playoffs. Just listing the team's accomplishments.
