Caps draw Montreal

The Capitals will host the Canadiens in the first round of the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Flyers beat the New York Rangers, 2-1, in a shootout -- in a shootout! -- Sunday afternoon to clinch the seventh seed and drop Canadiens into the eighth spot.

It will mark the first time the Caps have ever met Les Habs in the playoffs.

The schedule won't be announced until later tonight, but the word here is that it could be Thursday-Saturday night here in Washington. So stay tuned.

-----------------

probably the most entertaining feature of this series. And hopefully we get a lot of work on the PK. Some adversity would be nice.

Also probably means that barring a collapse of some sort, players like Erskine will probably not play in this series because of the speed matchups. So Cuervo it is. Also don't expect to see Scott Walker in the series. Probably get some Boyd, maybe a game for Laing.

Gill v Ovechkin!

Yay ?

Japers Rink has stats between the Caps and Canadiens, our PK is 64.3% effective against Montreal's PP.

Well, considering the Wiz have their home finale on Wednesday it would have to be a Thu, Sat start right? Unless they move the Wiz game to afternoon which I doubt would happen. Or they could play the game at Caps Centre haha

Not too thrilled about it but oh well. We've had troubles with Montreal all year. Out of the 4 teams that were fighting Montreal was the team I didn't want.

heavy hitters on Montreal

--Travis Moen
--Ryan O'Byrne
--Ryan White
--Kostitysin

LaPierre's a little sh_t so he'll probably be doing some sneaky stuff.

Moen's their guy who likes to park himself in the crease. Tough guy to move out. One of the better FA acquisitions this past offseason.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 11, 2010 6:07 PM | Report abuse

They posted a new entry while I was doing my figuring, so I repost for your convenience.

Stamkos and Crosby have 50 each as of the ends of their first periods. Going off their rates of scoring per period, there's about a 20% chance either will score in any given period, and there'd be about a 60% chance that at least one of them will score at least once in any given two random periods.

Considering the competition they are up against, and that they'll be trying to get #51, I think the chances Ovechkin won't be winning another Richard Trophy are pretty darn slim.

Posted by: Steph22 | April 11, 2010 6:12 PM | Report abuse

The chances of Ovechkin winning a third straight Hart Trophy, in my opinion, are really low right about now, even though this is really his best season ever if you look at things on a per-game basis. Most of the voters will not do that. Oh well.

Green has a decent shot at winning the Norris Trophy at least.

I'd like to see Walker play, but I'm not counting on it.

Things getting feisty between the Isles and Pens..Malkin roughing.

Ohhhhhh boy! Is this series going to be insane or what!? I know plenty and plenty of annoying Habs fans that I would love to silence after this series. Hopefully the Caps do not lay an egg, because Montreal is just awful.

If the Caps do slip up don't worry, the Habs are well known for choking up leads in the third period consistently.

Posted by: hockeynightincanada | April 11, 2010 6:18 PM | Report abuse

Montreal has a very good PP but I think they draw the least amount of PPs or are close to drawing the least amount of PPs.

@cstanton1

You said that the Caps would be better off going against the Rangers because they are physical so that would prepare the Caps for later rounds. Then you said that the Devils, Pens, and Sabres are not very physical teams. Then who would the Caps be preparing for?

Posted by: sgm3 | April 11, 2010 6:20 PM | Report abuse

Malkin just tripped Roloson. LOL.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 11, 2010 6:22 PM | Report abuse

just can't see it against the Habs

to be honest, Laing is a better option overall anyway. Walker comes in handy around the net because he's a mean little snot. But I wonder how much he really has left in him. I watched him in that scrum today with Chimera and he didn't do much, he got pushed around like Belanger did.

And his lack of speed v Laing, works against him also. I think in a speed series like this, #53 would be a good asset to have. He just flies around and runs into people. Thats what you need from your 4th liners.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 11, 2010 6:23 PM | Report abuse

I think the Islanders are trying to let Crosby score enough to pass Sedin to. Oh well he had almost 10 games more to get them.

I said the Devils and Sabres weren't. I said the Pens were. So they would be preparing for the Pens if thats the way things worked out.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 11, 2010 6:24 PM | Report abuse

Laing played very good in the recent games he actually played in. I wouldn't mind either of them. He's a much bigger body and probably has a better knack for scoring goals at this point of Walker's career.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 11, 2010 6:25 PM | Report abuse

Go Stamkos.

So funny to read this board. Folks are being sarcastic about Theo and the PK leading us to lose to the Habs, right? Where's ChickenLittle?

No series is a gimme, that's for sure. But we will give it our best and from that our chances are good. I think the Caps play strong, Theo holds up well in net, and we take it in 5.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 11, 2010 6:31 PM | Report abuse

unless Theo falls apart and Halak stands on his head, the Caps shouldn't really need more than 5 games... this is the biggest mismatch in the first round this year.

Posted by: joek443 | April 11, 2010 6:34 PM | Report abuse

goal scoring wouldn't even by my concern per se. I'd want to see Laing in there for his forechecking, his energy. Any goals he scored would be unexpected and a bonus. But in the playoffs you do get some good contributions from your 4th liners sometimes that result in actual goals. see Brashear.

But Laing's job is to play good defense, to keep the other team bottled up in their own end with a forecheck, to wear down the defense and knock them around etc. And he usually has great chemistry with Steck and Brads. Those 3, for not having much skill, do a great job on the forecheck of generating some chances.

this yr those 2 won't have Laich on their wing. So a Laing makes more sense. Gordon has little chemistry with Brads/Steck

Crosby just tied Ovi for points.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 11, 2010 6:35 PM | Report abuse

It's not so much about actually scoring goals as it is creating offensive chances and exactly what you say; maintaining a forecheck and pressure in their zone.

to put it in perspective: It took OV sitting out 1/8th of the entire season in order for anybody to give him any competition for the Ross or Richard Trophies.

This year isn't about individual trophies, he's won plenty, and will win plenty more.

Also, to put it in furher perspective, Sasha had 40g, and Nicky had 100 pts. We've had god knows how many 20+ scorers this season. OV isn't a one man band out there any more and that's a good thing for this team as a whole.

There's only one trophy I care about winning this year. Bring on all comers.

You're so right, VTDuffman. As much as I hate Ovie losing these awards to Crosby, this TEAM has accomplished so much and the only thing that matters is the big prize. It also shows how good Ovechkin is when he was still up there with Sedin for points and goals with Crosby and Stamkos when he's played 10 less games. Ovie would trade in all the individual awards for the Cup.

---
But I would feel better if Stamkos scores in the third and Crosby doesn't score anymore so they can share it.

Montreal will be one of only two teams in the playoffs with a negative goal differential.

And Montreal is 3-5-3 in their last 11, i.e. 3-8.

The only thing that the Capitals could do for the rest of the season that would really make me angry would be to lose a series to this less-than-mediocre Canadiens team.

(The other one with a negative goal differential is Ottawa, but they've gone 7-2-1 in their last 10.)

Posted by: youaresquishy | April 11, 2010 6:48 PM | Report abuse

There is a reason Mtl. is an 8th seed. If the Caps don't win this series, than they don't deserve anything. That would suck.

Posted by: DCFanatic | April 11, 2010 6:51 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are healthy and focused so if they can't get it done now then not sure when they will. Thomas had a good game and Ovie has bigger things in mind. If it had happened, great but it did not look like he was trying his best and he should not have risked more than he did. The Isles are not going to the playoffs and have nothing to play for and no pride, apparently. Go Caps! Let's all have a bit of faith and be positive.

Anyone who is worried about playing Montrel is right...It's the playoffs..you worry about every opponent. We were way better then the Rangers last year and came minutes from losing..1 game away vs. Pittsburgh and we could of gone on to the cup..

It's do or die time...You just have to have faith...we have good depth going into the playoffs and are healthy..we are ready.....everyone is older and wiser then last year, and we add Knubie, Chimera, Corvo, Walker, Morrison, Carlson, Belanger, only really losing Feds and Kozlov who were slowing down...We have to expect Green and Semin to be better then last years playoffs.

I have been a season ticket holder for a long time..never been so excited...as fans we will play our part..loud and proud...non hockey fans in DC will be hockey fans very soon...lets do it..

All this hand-wringing about Ovi not winning the scoring title, etc. is a bit ridiculous. He has a shelf full of those and will get plenty more. But in the age of salary cap, we may never have a chance this good again.

If we can't beat Montreal, we don't belong on the big stage. The way I look at it, this opponent is the least physical, and whatever physical players they have are not the ones on the ice a lot. Their first line is reincarnation of "smurf Rangers." (although those smurfs were good!) Less of a chance to get our top players injured.

Yes, they have a good PP. Ours is better. Keep you sticks down. They also happen to draw the LEAST number of PPs in the whole league. Most likely because their Fs are so small and Ds who play against them can outmuscle them without having too many penalties called.

Their PK is average. Ours is ... oh well. Can't be perfect.

We should have no problem keeping those guys out of the crease and letting Theo see the pucks. And on the other end, I intend to enjoy watching Bergeron, Spacek and Markov trying to move Knuble out of the way. And even if they score 3 or 4 goals more on special teams, we should be able to overcome that.

Most importantly - no afternoon games. NBC will not chase this matchup - they want two US teams. Ovi can get some sleep!

The games between these two have been good ones this year. Laich had a hat trick, (WTF) Fehr had a game tying goal in the third and Ovie plays well against Montreal.

That said, they must stay out of the penalty box. Montreal has a good power play unit. I hope Ovie puts Gill in the net again.

i think its safe to say that if this series goes past 5 games (barring just an unreal performance from their goalie or a horrid one from ours), that the Caps have played down to the level of their opponent.

and if we lose, well then thats a huge step backwards for this org. Montreal is one of the weaker (arguable the worst) playoff team out there. The only comparable team is the Avs but thats just because they're a very young and inexperienced team. Montreal should not scare anyone. The Caps need to have some arrogance and walk all over them. They don't need to let them even think for a second that they have a chance in this series. That starts with 2 dominations at home, and then a very strong 1st pd on the road in game 3.

@igor_k17

Cammalleri had been injured for a while. Which is why he hasn't scored much as of late. I believe he's back.

So... does Theo get the nod for Game 1 and Varly Game 2? I remembering hearing BB tries to avoid playing Theo in Montreal because of all the attention he gets from the fans there. Last time they played, Theo stepped in for the starter (can't remember who it was) and when he made some amazing saves the crowd striked me as torn between reverence and the opposite of that... Well, regardless of who BB goes with, this should be an interesting matchup. Can't wait!

12 games since he came back; 0 goals. Doesn't mean he won't break out against us of course...

I don't see playing anyone but Theo. We're not about to start playing scared.

Theo came in for Neuverth in the game we dropped the streak. We came back to tie in regulation only to lose in OT. Ovi (or whichever Cap last touched the puck) scored the fantastic Hal Gill-check goal that was disallowed.

What is up with the doom and gloom from some of you people?! With a playoff appearance on the line the Habs lost to Carolina, and lost in overtime to the Toronto Maple Leafs to barely squeek into the playoffs. The Caps are a better team and should win.

I'm from Montreal and a Habs fan since 68...
Here in Montreal, we don't think we stand a chance, we're actually betting on Washington vs Chicago in final... We also recognize that Ove is the best player in the league and even if we try to get him off his concentration by booing him here, we will still like him and forever hope he plays for us one day... ;)

I hope we will still get good matchup and wish you all a good one!

@joanito28

you're the coolest non caps fan that has ever posed here...usually other fans just talk about how dirty a player Ovie is and that the Caps suck.

for all the persons above who dont believe the caps are cup-bound. WAKE UP! i havent seen a team more destined to win a championship in years. the sharks have been a standout team the last few years but they've never shown the type of heart that the caps have shown the entire year. its the friggin canadiens, we have played them well all year. aside from varlys poor performance his first game back from injury where they lit him up of course. but even that was a highly contested game. the team is confident and we should be too. we have every reason to believe that this is our year. were a much deeper, more experienced team than years past. i predict caps in 5. GO CAPS!
