Caps in Control

Anticipation and nervous energy filled Kettler Capitals Iceplex this morning. The stands were packed with giddy fans, the players were all smiles in the locker room, and Coach Bruce Boudreau literally couldn't stand still.

It's about what I expected considering last night's upset in Raleigh.

Thanks to the 'Canes' unexpected 4-3 loss to Florida, the Caps are in control of the Southeast Division. They need a win or an overtime loss tonight against the Panthers to clinch the division and earn a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2002-03. But if the Caps lose in regulation, they're out and the 'Canes are in. It's that simple.

"At least we know what we have to do," Boudreau said. "It's in our hands. Nothing has really changed since yesterday - we have to win."

When it was suggested that the Caps could also lose in OT and still get in, Boudreau grimaced.

"We don't even want to talk about the 'L' word," he cracked.

This, of course, is all the direct result of one of this season's biggest upsets. The 'Canes could have wrapped up the division at home last night, but instead wound up losing to the Panthers, who had not won at RBC Center since December 2002.

(Florida goalie Tomas Vokoun suffered back spasms and was replaced by capable backup Craig Anderson. Anderson, I'm told, is expected to start tonight.)

After the game, Florida forward Nathan Horton was quoted as saying, "We control everything now."

"They enjoy what they are doing," Boudreau said of the Panthers. "If they're not going to the playoffs, they want to put everybody out. You play every team in the division eight times, so there's a little bit of hate between them. So if you can make them unhappy, you're going to do it."

If the Capitals get a point tonight, they'll earn the third seed and host home games likely on Thursday and Sunday. The Rangers, Bruins, Flyers and Senators are all possible first round opponents.

Boudreau, however, didn't want to go there. Not yet, anyway.

On another subject, forward Matt Cooke made his first comments since being fined $2,500 for his hit on Lightning star Vincent Lecavalier. Lecavalier suffered a right shoulder injury.

"Anytime a superstar gets hurt," Cooke said, "there's going to be some ramifications. Fortunately it came down to a fine and not a suspension."

"Ouellet had the puck and I had my lane to pinch him off," he added. "Vinny came in behind me and it was incidental contact. Unfortunately he got hurt. It's no different than when [defenseman Shaone Morrisonn] got hurt. He didn't touch the puck; he just turned to go get it and Jeff Hamilton was right there. It was a hockey play."

Cooke's just glad be able to play tonight.

"This is some of the most fun I've had in the National Hockey League," Cooke said. "Obviously, being in the playoffs is a whole other level. I've experienced that; a lot guys here haven't. The way we've come together in such a short time, to go on a run like we have, and get in the playoffs and have home ice. It comes at the right time for this organization and it comes at the right time for the league to have the best player continue playing."

Yeah, but first they have to earn a point tonight.

Cooke's explaination of his hit as a "hockey play" is so dead on. This league takes physical contact as assault. You can't have bodies flying around like they do and expect things like this not to happen. The Caps management should do what they can to keep this guy around for the next 3 to 5 years. He's the spark plug we have been lacking. sort of a poor mans Dale Hunter. Great trade GMGM.

Whatever happens, I think whoever is going to the game tonight, should start a chant for Olie, considering this may be his last regular season game, in a Caps jersey!

Who agrees with me?

Repost from previous

By about any measure, this season has been an overwhelming success. Having come from 30th position in the depths of our collective depression, to being on the cusp of a playoff berth is a remarkable achievement. It takes a lot of character to get this far. It takes a lot of perseverance, hard work, and working for a common goal - to win the game coming up. The Caps have matured in front of our eyes, and yet have maintained that youthful exuberence and elan to make the effort a pleasure and a rewarding experience for themselves and us as passionate observers.

Having tried the Caps offices, Verizon Center, and Ticketmaster to no avail, I ask the blogosphere:

What time do Eagles Nest seats go on sale?

I don't care how tonight's game turns out so long as the Caps make the playoffs and not Carolina.

---
An OT win tonight sounds good - just so long as Carolina is out of the playoffs. I want the Caps to make the playoffs - as a hockey fan it's exciting to see Ovechkin get his first chance at the playoffs.

------

One more thing I am a die hard Panther fan, but I will be cheering for the Caps tonight, because Ovechkin is the real deal and seeing him in the playoffs would make up for the Panthers not making the playoffs. Plus the Canes diving team would get a rewarding summer off.

---------

I hate to say this....Panthers...HAVE FUN tonight, BUT..DON'T WORRY ABOUT WINNING!

THE HATE THE HURRICANES

Posted by: From the Florida Blog | April 5, 2008 12:33 PM | Report abuse

The Caps figure to benefit from playing on home ice, having an extra day of rest, and being just one point away. I simply can't see them laying an egg tonight.

Indeed, the Panthers will give it all they have, but they won't have the wheels or the gas to play 60 with D.C. (Florida mustered only one shot on goal in the third last night.)

Go Caps go! The playoffs are right around the corner!!

Hey tarik

Really enjoy your real time updates throughout the year. Being a monster Caps fan, and living in Syd Crosby territory here in Nova Scotia Canada, hasn't been fun until.....last night. I kept telling my buddies during the year,"Wait until next year, the Caps will be serious contenders" and you can just imagine the laughs I received in November-Dec.-Jan.-Feb.-and less laughs in the beginning of March-and a bunch of respect at the end of March-and a bunch of apologetic calls this AM! Well, "next year"just might be "this year!" GO CAPS! All the EAST teams want the CAPS to lose-they don't want any part of them. Conference final? CAPS-HABS!

@RonC,

Oooh, yikes. Kinda reminds me of Huet's statement when he said we were "Going all the way." I rationalized it by thinking it was a European analogy to we are GOING to give it our ALL, and this is the WAY to success.

Either that or it was just another example of the French ego running amuck.

Anyway, just not counting the chickens.

Long time reader of this site.. but first time poster. If I wasen't so busy with work I would definitely be a regular here.

If the Caps get in the playoffs (which I think they will) I hope we face Boston. I think we owe them some pay back from the game they stole from us with the help of the refs during the regular season. A little more motivation is not a bad thing..not that we should need it.

Posted by: EDGE | April 5, 2008 1:14 PM | Report abuse

As for the Olie chant, it would be exceedingly inappaopriate as well as confusing if it took place anytime before the final buzzer.

Getting the points tonight is the most important thing. The Caps are doing the Shirt Off The Back ceremony after the game. This seems like the perfect time to do an Ollie cheer for those who want to do one. If you want to show appreciation to Kolzig, you can always make a donation to either Ollie and Elliot's Great Saves program or to Athletes Against Autism, which is a charity that Ollie helped to start.

TARIK!

What is with the absolute blackout of coverage of Tortorella's "extra man" goonery shenanigans at the end of the game and the NHL's stupefying decision to go after the Victim in this case (Cooke and the Caps).

I have to say I am extremely disappointed by your lack of coverage and the laziness of NHL reporters in general on that game in just running with Fonzie's version of events only (cheap hit my ass).

Posted by: Sapper | April 5, 2008 1:30 PM | Report abuse

Thanks, Steve. I feel bad ... I wish I could have hooked him up. :-( It was certainly not for a lack of trying, though. Anyway, I agree with you - if/when we make it (and I think we will!), I hope it is Ottawa, too, given the sweep (when they were at their best, no less!). Plus, they are not only lackluster as of late, but they have injuries now, as well, so I think we would do well against them. Yup, THAT would be a fun series!!

Posted by: Boo! | April 5, 2008 1:32 PM | Report abuse

Don't be surprised if we get some horrific penalties tonight. The NHL officiating crew finds creative ways to make things "fair", and Florida got the shortest of short sticks yesterday.

And I echo Sapper's comments-- 39 minutes of penalties in 23 seconds as Tarik said-- takes talent. Ignoring that it happens takes Bettman level skills.

Just because Ovie's my boy doesn't mean I have to hate the other great talents out there. I love watching the others do well, as long as they are playing somebody else and I'm watching on Center Ice. Hi Wolfefan:

Sorry to slide into the exchange, but I couldn't resist!

WOW! Bernie Wolfe. That comment brought back a lot of memories for me! When I looked through the Caps web site this year, I also saw that Larry Carrierre is on staff.

That guy was All-Canadian University. One of the all time best! Bernie was also a Canadian star! Him and Carrierre played against each other.

As for tonight, my call is a blowout!

We have something real special here for a long time to come! I grew up with the Montreal Canadiens, and we all knew when something special was happening. Let me tell you, something VERY special is happening with the Caps!

They will contend for the Cup for at least the next 5 years-at least! A little tweak here and there-sign Huet-another top 4 "D" and look out!

Let's embrace this team. They are so much fun to watch! Let's enjoy tonight and the next 5-10 years!

Sorry I was so darn long-just really excited about tonight!!!!!! T minus 2:47 but whose counting!

I am:
1) Not oft frustrated of late - Thank you Caps!!! - Lets Go Caps!!!

2) Perplexed at the whole Cooke/LeCavalier thing. It was a good hit, rightly no penalty was called at the time. And the lack of fines so far to TB in general and Tortorella in particular is inexplicable.

3) Very psyched but not at all looking past Florida, they will be on an emotional high after last night and playing for respect.

LETS GO CAPS!!!!!!!!

OK, for all the Caps fans in New York, it looks like O'Hanlons is a good place to watch the game. The bartender I talked to knew about the game, said it was on the DirecTV schedule and everything, and said they'd be sure to set aside a TV from the Final Four. See you there!

nhl seems to not allow coverage of controversial hits/ questionable calls/ fights. they won't be posted among the hits online (nhl.com) and you can have a harder time getting them on tv coverage. kind of a pain if you want to increase the audience. if someone hears about something and goes back to watch highlights, they may not catch it -e.g. that hit.

@Mon-ray-al-er in Wash,

That is great you knew/saw Bernie in Canada. He was the first Caps player I idolized and still have that jersey I got for Christmas back in '78 tucked away somewhere. Last I heard, he lives in Potomac and works as an attorney.

Great to hear you cheer for the Caps now, but there is nothing wrong with rooting for the Habs on the side.

Unless the Caps are facing the Habs, Bonne Chance Bleu, Blanc, et Rouge!

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | April 5, 2008 5:20 PM | Report abuse

I've had season tickets to the Caps for many years, including 1974-75, but I moved a bit to far to attend games.

For all you heading to the game, those of us who'll be watching on TV want you all louder than at the Carolina game.

Drown out Joe and Craig with your cheers and noise.

Let the Caps feed off your intensity, and make the Panthers quake in their skate boots.

GO CAPS!!!

@ jim*

You'll also have a tough time finding highlights on NHL.com of things like the botched washed-out goal in the Tampa Bay game the other night.

The bad thing is that with the lack of decent TV coverage, more and more fans have to go there for highlights of these key games. I remember as a kid, seeing game after game on ESPN and ESPN2. I guess ESPN would rather cater to idiots that watch bull riding and poker in their underwear and gravy stained wife-beater T-shirts.

Yes, we can't count this Panthers team out. Panthers are known for their PP. And yet, last night, when they had 0 PPs (compared to Canes 9), and they were still able to win 4-3.

With that said, I believe in our boys. About 40 minutes left, till the puck drops

Talk about my lack of priorities...

I'm in Panama City, Fla., this weekend for a wedding (not mine!) ... I'll be at wedding rehersal and then hanging out with the groom and groomsmen during the BIGGEST Capitals game of the year.

But ... my brother in MD will be calling me on my cell ... I asked him to put his phone up to the TV so I can listen in on the action. :)

Let's go CAPITALS!

Dear Hockey Gods,

Thank you for all the prayers answered, we control our destiny tonight, we just want to ask you one more time to be on our side, send rebounds our way, do some work that you usually do behind the scenes that would benefit us.

The entire NHL wants us in playoffs, so please take it in consideration while reviewing our case.

And maybe I am asking too much, but help me to unleash my half slap shot to score the go ahead goal, I am really due, for the fans, for the community, for all the bloggers here.

Caps simply aren't converting. Playing in this game requires a different frame of mind because they're in control. The Caps aren't used to that. They're used to hunting. Not sure they're mentally prepared for it. Not scoring on at least one of the 5-on-3's is inexcusable.

Posted by: mauree | April 5, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

It's a different mentality, elicea, and they're not used to it. I think they're tightening up a little bit because if they lose they're out. Before, they had to play with desperation to win so they were looser, and they took more chances.

So assuming it ends this way, how does Boudreau decide on goalies? Does he ride Huet until he loses in the playoffs even on back to backs? Not saying Huet isn't capable but he's been playing for the last dozen games or so. Does Kolzig get a start? Does it depend on who they play? Antone know who has the better record lifetime/this year vs the Rangers, Boston, Philly or Ottawa?

Kiltman:

Huet will get his rest. Back-to-back games are very rare in playoffs. That's why it takes till June to play all the games.

Anyone doubt me KNOW that the Caps will not win or be in the playoffs? Can Florida score 2 goals with 6:47 left?

Ok, I am sorry. Too much adrenaline. I really do.

I just mad that Huet has won 8 games in a row, he made it possible for Caps to sneak into playoffs and I don't think it has been appreciated. All these Olie's lovers just complain how olie was thrown under the bus. Nobody wants to acknowledge that Olie had the worst numbers in NHL till March, and hten he might got fro mthe last to the last but one place.

Again, I apologize.

I usually say "don't feed the trolls"... I'm tempted to scream "in your face!" to all the downers - but they'll never learn. Let's just be happy :D

Once more time I'm going to root for the Pens - I'd really hate to meet Philly the first round. Aside from the fact they're really hot, they play dirty.

@ King Huet
I think it is appreciated, no doubt the trades made by GMGM have enabled this team to get to the playoffs. They have all contributed however, tonight it was Federov, the belief in the room must be up there. No doubt in my mind that Kolzig in nets during this must win stretch = different outcome.

Posted by: Kiltman | April 5, 2008 9:51 PM | Report abuse

King Huet:

So what if I am. This is not the time to bring the sharp words up about Olie so cut it.

I am not going to get into this battle again at this time so cut it.

Let's celebrate what we have done. As a fan since 1974, I am glowing in the euphoria. How long you been a fan, 2 months?

@King Huet

Everybody appreciate Huet are you kidding me? His numbers are incredible, the last few games he only got scored with scrambles. All of us think he should get the starts, and that he was a big part in going to the playoffs.

But you're out of line when insulting Olie like that - stop it or you'll be labeled as troll. Is that clear?

How about writing an artivle about Huet? There are two publications in Washington, DC, (WT and WP) and none had an article about Huet.

The only thing that comes close to how happy I was watching the Caps win tonight was beating out Hasek in the '98 playoffs...!!!

Love to all the fans living miles and miles and miles away from home, but have been following the Caps on the dinky TV in the corner of the bar where they've never heard of 'hockey'!

Thank you Ovie, Backs, Green, Laich, Semin, Brads, Huet, Bruce--- everyone!

Never thought I'd say it, but thank you Fedorov!

THANK YOU OLIE!!

Thank you Halpie for that goal and win against Carolina a few weeks ago!

Thank you Caps!!

(and thank god we wont be playing Pittsburgh in the first round, i dont think my heart or my graduate school career can take it)

Posted by: Caps Fan now in Wes' Tex | April 5, 2008 10:48 PM | Report abuse

I don't know if they did stars of the game or not.

Semin is #1 in my book for tonight. He played a great game, worked the boards, brilliant feed to Fedorov and a wicked slap shot goal.

Fedorov is my #2 for his work in the slot and a laser-beam shot that I'm sure Anderson was glad not to be hit by. I think it would have gone through him.

My #3 would be the rest of the team. They all played really good. Flash scored on a good shot. Backstrom was all over the ice as was Cooke, Gordon, Brashear, and every one else. Monster hits by AO - again! Amazing.

This has been an amazing ride (and will continue to be). Ovie and the boys go from being the misfit toys that nobody wants to not only the hottest team in D.C., but America's and Canada's darlings. Have you read the comments on the "Caps clinch" story on TSN.ca? I'll be my conservative self here. Hold my emotions in check. Allow my reasoning to take hold, and...

Why the F%()%($_ NOT?? BRING ON THE CUP!!! :D

Sorry. That kinda slipped out there.

This will not be an easy road. There are a lot of games to be played between now and then. A lot can happen in the second season.

While I'd like to play Ottawa, I don't know if we will. I'd really like to see Philly and Pittsburgh kill eachother tomorrow night, and then beat up on eachother again over 7 games in the playoffs.

I think the Devils are pretty much done already. Martin B was pulled in last night's game.

I think Boston and Montreal play. Montreal should win but that could go to 6 or 7, too.

I say we take the Sens in 5. They're depleted, and we have their number.

It does get harder after that.

Oh how I wish I was one of those lucky people who got one of the jerseys. I would have looked good in a Mike Green, Brooks Laich, Alex Semin, or Nicky B. Guess I have to go and buy one for the Red Out playoffs. My Hunter jersey just is not cutting it for me right now.

Watching those guys cheer on each other, clap for the crowd, and just have fun was so cool!

lol nice slip :D

The last team I'd like to meet is Philly. They played really dirty with the Pens. I'm kind of worried about our boys - we can match their physicality but we could get hurt if they play dirty (and they are playing dirty).

Don't forget, we're heavily depleted as well - nobody knows what happened to Schultz, and who knows when Mo will come back Darn it.

So yeah I hope the Pens will win tomorrow and kill each other for 7 games.

While it would be real nice to see Mo back in the line-up, I thought the D-men played a good game. All of them. Even when Schultz didn't return.

I like this result and I love this team and all it's personalities. From a psych perspective, it appears as though Huet and Cooke have been absorbed pretty well by the team. Fedorov has been welcomed as well, but more as an older brother.

GO CAPS, GO!!

Oh, and, um, I think Fedorov looks fantastic in red, white and blue! I really hope a way can be found to have him with us next year. His leadership upside is gigantic.

Any news on Shultz and any idea of Status of MO. Also heard on TV, Nylander could play in 2nd round if they get there...nice 4th line center....

Who is with me when I say they should put the "C" on Federov's sweater and not Clark's?

Which interviews - the on ice interviews?

BTW, anyone see Brooks gimp off the ice? Was there any commentary about it? He had several people helping him down the tunnel ...

Also, what was the scoop with the FLA goal? Didn't look like it went in from our vantage point - we didn't even know it was being reviewed.

@ Boo!

Unfortunately it was a goal. It barely made it over the line in the right corner of the goal. It hit the bottom bumper padding. Legitimate goal.

Brooks blocked a shot which caused the injury, but he came back in later. Was he helped back after the post game celebration?

Anyone notice how the Bruins tanked their game tonight?

If they had won they would have moved past Ottawa up to sixth. But apparently they were to scared to take on the Caps!

If the Flyers lose tomorrow it will be Caps-Ottawa, and Pittsburgh has to win to get the number one overall seed. I'm expecting Philly to pull a Boston and lay down so they don't have to play the Caps either.

Gotta love it, but there's still 16 wins to go. In the immortal words of Winston Wolf, "Let's not start ------- each other's ----'s just yet."

@Boo!
Yeah the ones on the ice :D
We heard BB (he was awesome) but if they interview others we didn't hear.

Man I can only imagine the atmosphere and the noise at the VC.

@Boo

It was good. In the replay you can clearly see that it went in.

TSN.CA has a lot of positive Canadian responses to our WINNING THE SE DIVISION. A lot of Montreal fans are downright gleeful about a Caps v Sens matchup. There was even positive comments from the few pens fans wishing us luck - until we meet their team.

Thanks, guys. It sure was good - just saw the replay. Too bad. Anyway, we won - that's all that matters! :-)

So you heard BB's interview? The only other one was with Clark. He praised the team and the fans (and the red out), and basically hinted (after being asked) that he may be back for the playoffs. The rest of the time was spent giving fans game jerseys, the guys clapping for the fans, etc..

RE: Brooks, I did see him at the jersey give away and he was on his own. While he was not limping, he did seem to be moving gingerly. I don't recall seeing him back in the game, but maybe he was?!? Regardless, I hope he is OK. He's been big for the Caps this season ...

Looked to me like he took a puck in the leg - like just above the knee or inner thigh area. There's no padding there. It hurts like hell. I would expect him to be in pain tomorrow and for a few days.
