Caps get another victory against rival Pens

Morning roundup

A collection of Caps-centric links to kick off the day:

*Shootout goals from Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin and Mike Knuble lift Washington over Pittsburgh for the third time in three meetings this season.

*Tom Boswell: "How good are the Caps right now? Since World War II, only two pro sports teams in Washington -- whether in the NFL, NBA, MLB or NHL -- have had the top regular season record in their sport and led their league in scoring differential, too. Both were Redskins teams under Joe Gibbs that went to the Super Bowl after the '83 and '91 seasons -- one won, one lost."

*Brooks Orpik says the Penguins should have won. (Bog)

*Ovie | Fehr | Knuble on the win.

*Today's Q&As, guaranteed to have some Caps chatter: Tracee Hamilton, 9:30 a.m. | Boz, 11 a.m.

*Mike Knuble plays the hero. (Puck Daddy)

*Pens-Caps again lives up to the billing. (ESPN)

*Theo makes his case to be the starter. (NHL.com)

*Pens still have third-period troubles against Caps. (Corey for NHL.com)

*"Gut feeling" makes Knuble the shootout hero. (Examiner)

*There were younger and more suitable players, but Boudreau gave Knuble the chance to shine. (Fanhouse)

*"This one will sting for a while, and the Penguins know it. (Post-Gazette)

*Brooks Orpik blows off some steam after a frustrating loss to the Caps. (Tribune-Review)

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Belanger stood out last night. He played really well. He was flying everywhere last night and almost had the winner in OT on that pretty wrap around.

Amazing we won the shootout, I thought we were screwed when Letang and Crosby scored.

Hope to see Varly tonight.

Cindy, please pass your pacifier to Orp**ck !!

Another person who I thought played good was #26 Mo. He was throwing the body everywhere. I wish he would show that anger all the time. But my favorite hit(counter-hit really) was by Backstrom on Orprick. Everybody looks at Backie with his golden locks and thinks he's a pushover. They find our otherwise though!

Love Gabby's quote about going with his "big gut" and giving Knubs the tap during the shootout. He comes off like a genius!

Belanger would have been my #3 star last night. Theo is racking up the $$$ for Saves for Kids. But the highlight of the night (aside from the win) had to be seeing Pens fans ejected from 405/406.

The VC was beyond nuts on the way out. Go Caps!!

Gabby has to be the best quote in the NHL.

Sorry to ask a stupid question, but where is Alzner? Did he get sent down to Hershey?

Carlson needs a nick name that goes along with his love of hitting the irons! Any suggestions? I was thinking "cling" Carlson.

Here's a plan. Let Theo play the next 9 games and win them all. He'll make a nice third choice for the Hart. 17-0-2? Good grief.

I like that Orpik says that the Pens will be "out in the first round." I hope he's right. Go Caps!

also, so, we can all agree Backstrom is bette than both Toews and Kane, right? like, i still have some Kane love from the olympics, but Backstrom has surpassed both of them. So, F chicago and it's "stars"

I was watching on FoxPittsburgh last night and even the Pitt announcers, who are normally obnoxious homers, were praising Backie and touting him as a possible Selke candidate.

What happened in section 405-406? I looked up from the lower bowl at the end of the game and saw what looked like a commotion but didn't see any details. What happened?

Posted by: DevilsCapsGal | March 25, 2010 8:35 AM | Report abuse

Dunno about 405-406, but we had a scuffle after the game in 429 too.

Thought we were screwed for sure when the shootout started. Good thing I was wrong.

Orpik is such a baby. Did he take crying lessons from Crosby? Still, I suppose I should be nice. The Pens had eight players on the ice, two of them in zebra stripes, and still couldn't win. Poor things.

Yay, this site works at my new contract.

Good thing Ovi and Sid evened out and left the roleplayers to decide the winner.

Knuble is a money signing. That is all.

How about "Colonel Clink" Carlson to go along with "Sergeant" Shultz

First of all as a season ticket holder I'm tired of the scraps in the stands. If you can't handle your liquor DON'T FRIGGIN' DRINK IN PUBLIC. My seats are in 430 and there were some obnoxious Pens fans but since I was sober I was able to tolerate it as I always do, win or lose. I'm not against drinking alcohol, not at all, just people that can't handle their alcohol.

I too hate Orpik, but in this instance he's complaining about HIS team's inability to put teams away so his interview didn't really tick me off.

Even the refs, despite their best efforts, could not ruin those two teams putting on the greatest show in sports!

Regarding the RMNB link to Barack the Red: If BO attends a Caps game, especially a playoff game, please, please let him cheer for the other team. He's worse than the SI or Madden curse. Just ask the Colts, UNC last year or Kansas this year. Whoever he picks, loses. Barack can be Sidney's biggest fan, as far Caps fans go. Plus, do 19,000 fans really want to go through a metal detector before a big game? I remember when Bush attended the inaugural Nats game: what a nightmare getting in. We gave ourselves plenty of extra time and we still missed the opening pitch and first inning.

@ DevilsCapsGal - There were some drunk, obnoxious Pens fans up in 405/406 who were booted near the end of the 3rd, while being serenaded with "a__hole, a__hole" from all the nearby sections.

Glad the Penguin killer is in our locker room this year.

I like Cling Carlson....or Cling Clong Carlson....say that three times fast, or maybe Clinger.

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | March 25, 2010 9:45 AM | Report abuse

Beating the Penguins is not proving to be as difficult as beating the refs! Penalties called 5 - 1. The NHL should give up trying to pick a hero. Ovechkin beats Crosby, even when he has to play against the NHL and the Penguins.

He sure is having a nice season.
This is how another lefty played in the 80's for another high-flying offensive team - Grant Fuhr.

"It was a good battle," Talbot said. "They're a good team, and we're a good team. This shows, I think, that we hate each other."

Finally a player who doesn't spill the usual "just another team, just another game" crap.

re: 405-406

yeah 5 pens fans got booted and I heard one of them got arrested for taking a swing at somebody, but I don't know for sure

The best part of last night's game was when Crosby fed the assist to Semin for a short handed goal! Thanks Sidney!

I sold my single ticket to last night's game through the Caps/Ticketmaster site. Turns out a Pens fan bought a $65 ticket in section 430 for $125. He paid a lot of money to see his team lose! At least he was well behaved. Hated missing seeing the game live but the $$ goes into my playoff tix account. Sweeeeet.

I think it should be "Killer" Carlson in reference to Dave "Killer" Carlson of Slap Shot. You can never go wrong referencing the greatest hockey movie of all time
