Caps PK, Huet Bail Out Kozlov

That goaltender interference call on Viktor Kozlov was sketchy at best. Fortunately for him, it's now a non-factor.

What about Cristobal Huet? Lots of folks were questioning him after the series' first three games -- and perhaps rightfully so. But I bet they don't have much to say now. His short-stop impression on Scottie Upshall was the best save I've seen all season.

It's on to OT.

the officiating is piss poor. caps keep prevailing. gotta love this team. lets go caps!

Posted by: ben | April 17, 2008 9:47 PM | Report abuse

terrible call. no way you call that with less than three to play in a tied playoff game.

Posted by: murf | April 17, 2008 9:47 PM | Report abuse

repost (sorry)

From NHL Official Rulebook, page 456. 45353.(supplement A)

How to determine a goalie interference penalty:

Was goalie touched?
If no, no penalty. If yes, possible penalty.
Was the goalie hit playing for the flyers or capitals?
If flyers, its a penalty.
If not, did the forward punch the goalie?
If no, not a penalty.
If yes, its 2 minutes for the forward for interference and two minutes for the goalie for something.

Posted by: old time hockey | April 17, 2008 9:47 PM | Report abuse

The penalty was a non-factor in that Philly didn't score. It was a factor in that Washington was deprived of two minutes of possible attack time.

Posted by: Colin | April 17, 2008 9:48 PM | Report abuse

no matter what happens:

Huet already has delivered a miracle

He stood tall, and we, as Caps fans, need to stay tall behind him.

F**cking flyers are doomed...

This game is so stressful, I feel like I'm going to hurl. And now OT. Please Caps win. I don't think I can take much more.

Posted by: cbs | April 17, 2008 9:48 PM | Report abuse

how are they playing? i'm on call tonight and no CSN at the hospital. what i wouldn't give to see some OT playoff hockey.

Again, everyone please let the NHLOA know about what a great job these refs have done in this game:

To all Olie supporters,

When we say Capitals, we mean Kolzig,
When we say Kolzig, we mean Capitals...

Here's what Olie wanted to relay to you:

There's no time to be sentimental,
there's no time for goalie controversy,
we must unite like the army of one
and stick for better or worse with Christobal Huet

Now there's a chance, and it already happened in these playoffs with Hasek and Kiprisoff, of a meltdown, this is where Olie will come back on ice and stay tall in the net,
but now his message is, and he is a classy man,

STAY BEHIND HUET, SUPPORT HIM, because he needs it.

Alright?

Posted by: King Huet | April 17, 2008 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Kozlov got knocked into the goalie, big time. That's a BS call.. thank the hockey gods it didn't cost us.

Oneal

Posted by: Oneal | April 17, 2008 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Kozloz is one of the most passive guys on the ice... I'm beside myself...

Posted by: JSchon | April 17, 2008 9:49 PM | Report abuse

No offense, Kip, but bad calls go the way of every team in every series. No need to complain about it too much and send frantic e-mails to the NHL officials office. I'm sure the refs will see it before OT starts, and they'll have to make up for it for the Caps. It usually works that way.

Not as passive as Fedorov

Posted by: Steve | April 17, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Worst call I've ever seen. Thank goodness it didn't end on that power play.

Posted by: Ben | April 17, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Partial re-post from previous thread:

How wrong is it that I keep logging in and out of the Caps website to see Brooks pop up? I know, nothing to do about hockey, but still...

Maybe it is an omen that Brooks, not Ovechkin, will score to end this madness.

Oh, and anyone else think that Nick will be able to grow facial hair after this game?

Posted by: Kim | April 17, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Gang, I followed (Kip) over to the NHLPA site and submitted my protest. That call at the end of the third period was simply atrocious.

Posted by: Terptwin | April 17, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

OV only played 18+ minutes for 3 periods ..he got a message there...but the defensemen, green, poti and mo are playing a lot of minutes.

Good point, Kim. (If this is what you meant.) Backstrom has played like a man tonight. He's not getting shoved off the puck as much.

Posted by: Colin | April 17, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

there is NO WAY a ref (who is standing RIGHT THERE, by the way) should call this!!!! that is completely UNACCEPTABLE! this isn't a case of "oh well, they'll make it up in OT" - no way - that's incompetence or some cash changed hands.

Posted by: 7734yeah | April 17, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Yeah Joe, you're right. One of the things I love about BB is how easy it is to read his lips -- probably because he is yelling at the officials what I am yelling at the tv.

Posted by: uncatim | April 17, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

We've had some opportunities to finish this game...

Posted by: JSchon | April 17, 2008 9:54 PM | Report abuse

At least Biron got planted. 'bout time.

Posted by: Harry | April 17, 2008 9:54 PM | Report abuse

I'm not saying it was an acceptable call, 7734yeah. I'm just saying it happened, and they better make up for it. Not much you can do about it now. You can't hope in your Delorean and rewind time.

Posted by: Colin | April 17, 2008 9:55 PM | Report abuse

How is it possible that there are two refs out there, 4 officials in total and they can't get anything right?!! Two high sticks that split the Capitals' players faces open. No calls. The they call goalie interference on Kozlov with 2 and a half minutes left when he's coming in on a breakaway and gets hit from behind by Timonen and falls into Biron?!! Where the hell is he supposed to go?!! And goalie interference on that after the way the Flyers have been running Huet non-stop all series with not getting anything for it? What a joke!

BTW, Huet made two of the most amazing saves I've ever seen by a hockey goalie in the 3rd.

Posted by: ranndino | April 17, 2008 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Colin, man, I'd agree with you except for the metric ton of empirical evidence that suggests otherwise. Someone, please - when was the last time the refs were that generous to the Caps?

Posted by: Kip | April 17, 2008 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Colin:
I am guessing that's because Backs is not playing against their checking line anymore (since he moved off of Ovie's line).

I can't really argue with you, man. I just can't. But I also cannot get into these blame the ref games when the Caps have failed to finish some opportunities. But you're right. Officiating has been poor.

Posted by: Colin | April 17, 2008 9:56 PM | Report abuse

BTW, the Flyers have really gone after Semin in this game as he's been probably our best player. Why can't someone nail that little puke, Briere?

Posted by: ranndino | April 17, 2008 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Huet has stopped nearly everything in this series that wasn't shot at him from the crease. He's been solid in my opinion, it's the rest of the team that's been absolutely terrible. (Looking at you Kozlov, Cooke, and Fedorov.)

My email to the NHLOA:
"I am concerned with the officiating crew that worked the Flyers-Capitals game on 4/17. There have been some very questionable officiating against the Capitals. There have been a few missed calls where a Capitals player has been bleeding. Allow me to repeat myself, bleeding, from a high stick or other infraction from a Flyers player and there have been no calls. There have been ghost calls on the Capitals where a Flyers player has clearly embellished or helped the Capitals player commit the penalty. Cristobal Huet has been run over repeatedly, yet there has been no goalie interference call. Yet Victor Kozlov at least attempted to stop his 6' 4", 225 lb frame from plowing into Martin Biron and gets a goalie interference call in the last three minutes of a tie game. Such blatant bias against a team is completely unacceptable.
All year, there has been a serious lapse in unbiased officiating. I came back to the sport a few years ago after a lack of coverage in my new city kept me from watching. I expected an improvement and a better game after the lockout. Nothing I have seen this season as far as officiating goes has proven to me that the league has evolved and improved. I will seriously reconsider my allegiance to the NHL should such actions continue.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

If they ignore what happens in this game, at least I've hit them where it hurts, viewership.

ffffffffffffff... how many saves is Huet supposed to make? standing around. Knuble was ovechkin's guy. left him wide open. Huet managed a great first save on a one timer, but Ovechkin was so out of position that Knuble had all day to out in the rebound. Damn it.

how lonely must one be to post on an opponent's board during a home playoff game your team has just one in OT....it's actually sad.

Well done PWFLYERSFAN. you showed us.

Posted by: Pivonka | April 17, 2008 10:55 PM | Report abuse

So I guess when the Caps win faceoffs in their own zone, they like to give the puck up. I've never seen a team give it up so much in its own zone after winning a faceoff. Ridiculous.

Posted by: Colin | April 17, 2008 10:55 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin is awful defensively. He never pinches back. He stands at the top of the zone waiting for a break out. So his man crashes all the time.

It wouldn't be a Caps-Flyers series if one team didn't come back from three games to one! Guess it will have to be the Caps this year.

Well that sucks. I wonder if the score would've been different if the 8 minutes in uncalled blood drawing high sticks from Flyers players had been called? Oh well, when it comes down to it, the Caps just don't want it enough. I have yet to see them play the way they did the last 3 weeks of the season in this entire playoff series. Maturity, experience, and heart aren't there.

Posted by: JSchon | April 17, 2008 10:57 PM | Report abuse

I was a half fraction of millimeter close to my prediction that Caps would win...

I saw the bad sign, Caps had so many chances to score in OT and they didn't. That usually means the other team will score.

Cheer up! Caps are coming home, that's what home ice advantage is for.

Posted by: King Huet | April 17, 2008 10:58 PM | Report abuse

This season is a learning experience...the push to make play offs....learning what a series is like....learning what we still need (stay at home defense, some more griders who can score)

but this is tough to swallow...

That had typical old school caps playoff loss written all over it....

Posted by: chris larry | April 17, 2008 10:58 PM | Report abuse

@zamboni

Spot on. And how many times have we seen this story with any team in any sport? One squad is getting chance after chance after chance and not converting and ends up losing. It's a cliche story line. But it happened tonight. I was growing worrisome as the game went on because I knew how this would turn out.

Posted by: Colin | April 17, 2008 10:58 PM | Report abuse

Series isn't over, yet.

Ovechkin's got one game where he looked basically like himself: the good and the bad.

Let's see what he brings to Game 5.

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | April 17, 2008 10:59 PM | Report abuse

Well that just makes me sad. I wish I could feel better, but I don't. I hope they have something left on Saturday. Pride at this point. Make them work.

Hey Penguins, guess what. You may have just earned the Rangers and Sean Avery. What does he have cooked up for Sid????

I will still be there screaming like a crazy person next season when we lift that Southeast Division banner. And who knows, stranger things have happened. Will miss Game 5 due to kid's soccer games. Maybe, given my track record, that is a good thing. If they win on Saturday I promise not to watch anymore during this series.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 17, 2008 10:59 PM | Report abuse

They out shot us at the end. When we were shooting, we were in control. It's all about SOG. Of course the refs didn't help. Too bad. But it's not over yet. Their last three games of the regular season were must wins - they can do it again. It'll be tough, but they can do it. They played well - they just need to bring it again and hope for decent refs, breaks and bounces. It can happen - keep believin'.

No.

The Caps were supposed to win before I got my order.

There were people just milling around here and so they out the game on the big TV's and blasted the sound and people started watching.

Huet or Kolzig not an issue, this was our OT I'm sure the stats will show.

Posted by: Austinsteve | April 17, 2008 11:00 PM | Report abuse

This loss is too demoralizing, I think. Not because they lost in overtime but because they played well, played with grit, forechecked better, got more pucks on net ... and still gave up four goals and lost. They're probably wondering what they have to do to win a damn game, and I think that's going to linger in the back of their minds on Saturday. I can't see the Caps pulling out Game 5.

Posted by: Colin | April 17, 2008 11:01 PM | Report abuse

Lots of missed chances, lots of defensive lapses, lots of blown calls by the refs, but nevertheless the best I've seen the boys play in this series. It's do or die Saturday and I'm expecting an even better game then. Go Caps!

But if someone will mention that Kolzig should start in game 5, I have my bare hands to kill ya. :-)

Posted by: King Huet | April 17, 2008 11:01 PM | Report abuse

Sorry, Tarik, you're usually spot on, but I don't think a call that bad at that time in a tied game can be considered a non-factor unless the Caps end up winning. Since they didn't that definitely goes in my book as the worst call I have ever seen in any sport, and I follow a few. They could have awarded a penalty shot - probably unjustified, but still a better call than that - and a Caps power play definitely seemed in order at the very least. What a shame.

I don't have anything bad to say to the boys tonight. They improved on all the weak points: traffic in the opponent crease, clear traffic in our own crease, PP. They played with heart. They deserved to win.

Huet incredible. Eminger should play again. Caps should stand tall cause they played one heck of a game. Very bad call by the refs at the end of the third. I swore so loud I thought they called the police on me.

What a game... I'm not blaming the refs for this one, but it doesn't more obvious than that. How do you miss not one, but TWO errant high stick that drew blood? Even the pre-reform refs back in the day would've at least given a minor for it. The call on Kozlov was inexcusable, considering how many times Huet's been run now.

Forgot to mention that it was exactly 10 years ago when Dale beat Hextall to cap that 3-1 (also first round) series comeback. Hope they can do it again this year but until they can defend themselves better, esp in the crease, at least we can say it was a great year.

Don't you feel it? The Caps were hopeless on home ice in the first two games except one period... In game 3 and 4 they were dominating for a long stretches of time. The flyers were not able to tough Caps up in this game... They are losing momentum... They could barely handle Caps at home with all their crazy philthy fan base... Tables turning...

There is a bright side, this was their best game of the series. They had plenty of chances to score, hopefully their play will carry over to Saturday. They win Saturday, turn around the next day and hopefully win one in Philly. Refs did a piss poor job this game. Koslov had a pretty good game, but hey when you get chances to put a team away, you have to do it.

There is plenty of blame to around...

I'm starting with me and 828 going back to prayers and negative reinforcement.

After that I blame OV... I hate to do it... But he can not be excluded from blame... dumb penalties and poor defense when it mattered most.

Posted by: JSchon | April 17, 2008 11:09 PM | Report abuse

The officiating was beyond inexcusable. Done in by Don Assenholen and his cohort. How much facial blood does someone have to shed before that miserable piece of schaszbat will call high sticking. He didn't have the hair to call either of them against the flyers. The sheisztkopf would have called them on Washington at home. Many years ago, officials who blew it on the big stage disappeared during the summer. Now they get defended by Beckschnozz.

The Caps have so much work to do and probably not enough time to do it. I think they died in the second OT. They had one shot if I read it right in the that period.

They probably did deserve to lose with the two really bad goals in the first period. Both were the direct result of someone with ample opportunity to move the puck out of the zone, failed to do so. Earth to Morrissonn: Wake up dumb ass!!!! And two "too many men on the ice" penalties are unexcusable. If an assistant coach bobbled those ones, I hope he is unemployed next season.

Posted by: Old Bob | April 17, 2008 11:09 PM | Report abuse

After that game, i think that everyone is justified in saying that the officiating in this game was the worst I've ever seen. Semin should have drew a 4 minute PP based on the high stick he took alone. The Caps had many chances, yes, but frankly they should have been on the Pp way more. The refs sucked.

Semin was awesome. The best Cap on the ice through 4 games. The only one that looks like he's played a playoff game.

OT defeats like this are crushing. Usually. But I retain hope. Its all I've got and the Caps can have all of it. Great game, great effort and I'm still behind you boys.

One thing's for sure. We had more than enough excellent chances to win this game. No question! We didn't though. So, let's move on. I honest to god STILL BELIEVE WE CAN WIN THIS SERIES. I mean, how many more point blank shots can we miss?
This was ( Without a doubt ) the Caps' best played game thusfar. But, geezz, there's so much room for improvement. I think Fedorov's age caught up with him tonight. Very ineffective in all aspects. On the other hand, Brooks Laich finally came to life. I felt like the first three games he didn't play anywhere near his capabilities.
I wish we could send Jurcina to S. Carolina, or somewhere. HE'S BRUTAL! Even worse than Erskine. And, that's saying a mouthful.
Semin was GREAT! Nuf said. And, maybe FINALLY we can put to bed all that nonsense about Olie Kolzig. Christobal Huet was simply ENORMOUS IN NET! IMHO he's only allowed one questionable goal thusfar. Until tonight, the D. was letting Flyers free to shot ( On the fly ) from 5 & 10 ft. out on each and every goal. Patrick Roy wouldn't have stopped any of those either.
Can't wait for Saturday's game. Unfortunately, CBS will be broadcasting. And, they're horrible. LET'S GO CAPS. WE CAN STILL WIN THIS THING!!!!!

Ovie certainly didnt play well at all save the assist on the first goal

he fanned on a backhand with an empty net right before that delay of game penalty

and muffed another empty chance on his forehand to start the third that woulda iced the game at 4-2.

as much faith as we put in ovie though, he has no playoff experience and it shows.

hopefully he doesn't turn into the a-rod of the nhl

A classic game and heartbreaker too. That save by Huet in the 3rd...Tarik said it..best save I've seen all season too. Amazing. Huet could've stood on his head and spun around tonight as fast as he could but again the defensive zone breakdowns. IT'S CALLED BEING AWARE. Five guys sucked on the puck handler and they forget about the back door. Huet makes the initial save.

This hurts. But haven't you all figured this team out yet? They like to wait until they are on the very brink. Look at the regular season. Now they'll win the next three games. Ok ok just a small joke. This team will be back. There's too much pride for this team to bow out so quickly. I hope all of you who will go to the game on Saturday make that place shake.

Regardless they need to just keep fighting. Still plenty of positives to take from this game and build on.

CHRIS LARRY said it best. Even if they go out in five..these young players will learn from it. You just keep going.

Kudos to the Flyers for being able to execute as well. I still think this series will extend past Saturday. LET'S GO CAPS. LET'S GO CAPS.

I know I'm stretching on history but let's not forget the last time these two teams met in the playoffs..Flyers had a 3-1 series lead. We know what happened. I know I know..different time. Different players. Stranger things can happen.

I have no problem with other team's fans being on here if they are respectful and just like to discuss hockey in an intelligent manner. In fact, it often provides for some intersting discussions. I live about 20 minutes from Hershey and have been a Caps fan since I was a kid. Everyone else I know is pretyy much a Flyers fan, so that doesn't really bother me. There is a small contingent of us Caps fans here around Hershey, leftover from the early 80's when the Caps and Bears were affiliated the first time.

The officiating cost the Caps the game early and late. Caps up 2-1. Bradley cut by a high stick. Should be 4 minutes on the Flyers. The Caps have scored two on the PP already. Could be 3-1 maybe more. Instead, the Caps get a call on them a few seconds later. Flyers tie going into the intermission.

Second overtime getting away from them. Flyers buzzing. Flyers hit Huet yet again. Not once but twice. After the brutal Kozlov call, there is no way the officials can fail to make that call. They, of course, prove me wrong. Flyers finish it when they should have still be shorthanded.

It is enough to cause you to lose faith in the game. I honestly have never seen anything like the Kozlov call at such a critical moment of the game. What possibly could the referee have seen. It shouldn't have been a call on Philly, but what a big time for a missed call.

I wonder who that official grew up rooting for. It really does make you wonder.
