Caps' Playoff Scenarios

The Caps have come up with the simplest breakdown of the scenarios I've seen yet. If they win both of their remaining games, they get in if:

1) The Senators lose one of their final two games (Leafs, Bruins) in regulation or lose both in OT.

2) The Bruins lose one of their final two games (Senators, Sabres) in regulation or lose both in OT.

3) The Flyers lose one of their final games (Devils, Pens) in regulation or OT.

4) The 'Canes lose to the Panthers in regulation or OT.

5) If tomorrow's Bruins-Sens game ends in regulation, the most one of those teams can get is 94 points. The Caps hold the tiebreaker against both.

If the Caps lose tonight to the last-place Lightning, all bets are off. That's when it gets kind of crazy. Anyway, due to some TV commitments, I probably won't get around to updating the blog until after tonight's game or tomorrow morning.

Sounds so simple, doesn't it?

Just win. If they do that, ONE of those scenarios is bound to happen.

Posted by: Baildog | April 3, 2008 5:26 PM | Report abuse

Tarik,

Actually I think the simplest explanation I saw was from (IIRC) TSN:

If the Boston-Ottawa game does not go into overtime, the Caps control their own destiny. Period.

I love how i have tickets to the game saturday and my birthday's sunday yet i'm looking forward to saturday way more lol

"If the Boston-Ottawa game does not go into overtime, the Caps control their own destiny. Period."

Thats assuming we win tonight since that game is tomorrow. I think this is our best chance of getting in. I see the flyers winning both games especially since their last game is against Pit and by than, the pens may have the conference wrapped up

Posted by: Eric | April 3, 2008 5:32 PM | Report abuse

Just win, the rest will fall into place.

@TripDonkeys

I must have missed it. I can only read on days where I can be ADD and check quickly between tasks.

Does CapsInsider put all you foreign Caps fans in the same hotel here in Austin or what?!

Maybe Tarik will get the Post to procure me a snazzy Capitals tour shuttle. When I get out of work I can pick everybody up and take them to the secret places you can see Caps hockey in Texas.

In nyc and looking for a bar to catch the game tonight. Any ideas??

Posted by: jesstyr | April 3, 2008 5:52 PM | Report abuse

The gf and I ate a Kenichi's last night. It's right next door. There is a sign on the door, and it was dark but I got the impression they had at least started gutting it.

Plus I heard from someone previous about it. They didn't pay back taxes. I also know they had other issues that may have played a role.

It's not out of the way if you want the taxi to take you by there to see the 'closed' sign written on a piece of paper inside the door...

@Greg S - Feel free to Re-make your joke in this thread. That one was pretty funny.

If Buffalo loses tonight, what other parameters are involved for them to be out, if any. I ask because going from Presidents Trophy winners to knicker shoppers is very significant. Wondering if Lindy Ruff will be back, ya know?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 3, 2008 6:52 PM | Report abuse

James Mirtle's blog

Here are a few with playoff implications where one team that's out of it can be a big-time spoiler:

Tampa Bay @ Washington / a loss likely ends the Caps' run

Tampa lost last night to the team Washington's chasing, and the Lightning don't want to lose every game to end the year.

I am really worried.

BB must sink the message into boyz, don't underestimate Boltz.

They are going to play a real spoiler, thanks to Canes

To hell with Ottawa. They putz around the second half of the season then pull one out tonight when a loss would've helped the Caps. That's pretty annoying. It's like the Fates are lining up against the Caps. Washington keeps winning but can't gain any ground. But I agree with kevbpgc. I don't see the Flyers winning both of their last two. And you never know, Carolina could lose tomorrow night; although, that's highly unlikely.

Also, watch the replay, sir. He was after the puck, and Lecavalier skated into his path.

Oh, try not sending 5 guys out onto the ice when you're killing a penalty. Classy move by the future coach of the US national team.

but if they go into OT then they both clinch a spot/still control their own destiny. Boston will trap from the moment the puck drops because ottawa will be fired up. Ottawa will get flustered, Boston will take a lead, but Ottawa will storm back and tie the game at 1 in the final minute and win in the shootout.

Just got back from the game. Got scary there, but Ovie bailed us out, and props to Gordo scoring in the clutch.

I have never seen a call like that which disallowed Laich's goal - can anyone explain that one? There's so much more contact than that on nearly every normal goal in the NHL - what was the ref thinking? I don't even get how he would think to make that call. There was no one even close to Ramo.

First. Let me say that I am looking like a lousy predictor. OV scored not only once but also twice. So far no one has blamed Semin, but of course we didn't lose.
In any case, I am happy that I was wrong. Lets hope that I continue to be wrong.

@CT CAPS FAN
You said: "Stupid Rogers Sportsnet announcers for the Flames/Wild game saying how OV should not get the MVP because he plays in the SE division against teams that do not play defense." That is a perfect example as to why I don't think OV will get the MVP award if the CAPS do not get into the playoff. It is not that he does not deserve it, in my opinion no one else should claim it, but reality says many of the people with the vote does not feel the same way. You should not take that as I being negative.

The call was completely bogus. If it was interference, why wasnt there a penalty called?

I wont even get into the basis of the call, the was out of the crease too.

How the NHL explains that one, I have no idea.

That call was beyond bogus - it was unprecedented to the bizarre. Not just a weak call on a borderline play, it was completely out of the blue.

Was there any talk on the tv about the quality of the ice? From the nosebleeds even, it looked terrible. The puck kept just stopping, would almost never sit down on passes, and Backstrom just fell down behind the goal at one point with no one on him. Hope they can get that fixed.

I know it's off-topic, but here's a quick prospect watch.

Michael Neuwirth is 5 and 0 in the OHL playoffs for Oshawa. (first-round sweep + game 1 of round 2 tonight). It gets better...

In the five games, he's given up 7 goals on 189 shots for a .963 save percentage. His GAA is 1.40.

That's amazing.. he'll be in Hershey (at least) next season.

In the WHL, Alzner's Hitmen won their first-round series. In the Q, Mathieu Perreault's team is on to the second round as well. Francois Bouchard's team lost in the first round.

"It's an absolute cheap shot," Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella said. "We have stick fouls - stick foul after stick foul - and then I see that. It's a guy in a vulnerable position. It's an interference if the puck isn't anywhere near him, and that isn't called. It's an absolute cheap shot."

So it now seems that the most probable shot for our playoff hopes is for the Boston-Ottawa game to end in regulation with a decisive win for either team. As long as there is no tie at the end of regulation we're in with one more win against Florida on Saturday.

So, here's the question. Will Bos-Ott be televised here in DC?

Posted by: Drew | April 4, 2008 5:48 AM | Report abuse

Surely, one of those other teams is going to cave. But, our Capitals will live on!

Posted by: Dan, Jr. | April 4, 2008 5:57 AM | Report abuse

Thank God for Europeans! :) What a Franco-Russian alliance!

65! How silly do those 61 t-shirts look now? That's the Ross tied up to go along with the Richard. Malkin would have to have a 7 point night against Philly and Alex be held without a point against Florida for Malkin to win it now. Its 7 points because if they finish tied, Alex holds the tiebreaker with more goals scored. I'd love Malkin to have a monster game and bury the Flyers but he won't get 7 points.

If we are to get in at the expense of Boston, they have to lose to Ottawa. I just can't see the Bruins losing at home to the Sabres, who are as we speak, booking tee times and picking out nice golfing outfits. "Ohh Lindy, that shirt really brings out your eyes!"

Tonight is huge, like every night for the past 2 weeks hasn't been. If any of the following happens tonight, the Caps will know a win by any means tomorrow gets them in:

The Boston/Sens game ends in a regulation win, for either team.
The Devils/Flyers game ends in a win, of any kind, for NJ.
The Panthers/Canes game ends in a win, of any find, for Florida (this would be best, as a Caps win coupled with this scenario gives us the 3rd seed and home ice).

I think our best chance is the second of those above, a Jersey win. They have still not sown up 4th place (currently 2 points above the Rangers, each with 2 games left). If they win tonight, the Rangers can't overtake them as NJ has more wins and would win any potential tiebreak for 4th. The Devils will probably be playing the Rangers in Round 1 and I'm sure would rather have home ice advantage. Lets hope Marty B brings his A+ game tonight.

With regard to chants/songs.

I think the "Huuuu-et, Huet Huet Huet, Huuuu-et, Huuuu-et" (taken from the Ole, ole ole) chant mentioned above would catch on.

There was mention of Alex having his own football (soccer) style chant. I've been wracking my brains and the best I've got are:

To the tune of "Volare" made famous by Dean Martin:
"Ooooo-veckin.....whoooaao
Ooooo-veckin.....whoooaao
He'll win the Hart and Ross
He truly is the Boss"
Repeat

To the tune of a song that should be familiar to all from DC:
"Hail to the Capitals
Hail our Ovie
We're off-to the playoffs
He's the M-V-P!"

To the tune of "Hey Baby"
"Heeeeyyyyyyy, Hey Ovie
Ooh Aah
I wanna knooooowwwwwww
How you scored that goal!"

On a more general chant note, if things go well tonight and the Caps are 6-0 with 4 minutes to play on Saturday (and only if!) then the VC crowd could rise as one and sing (to the Pet Shop Boys "Go West"):

"Stand up - coz we're getting in
Stand up - coz we're getting in
Stand up - coz we're getting in
Stand up - coz we're getting in"
repeat, repeat, repeat!!

Seriously, the effect of the whole crowd standing up and singing, as the chant builds and builds. Hairs up on the back of the neck time.

Finally, to the tune of "She'll be coming round the mountain when she comes"
"If you're going to the playoffs, clap you hands (clap, clap)
If you're going to the playoffs, clap you hands (clap, clap)
If you're going to the playoffs,
Going to the playoffs,
Going to the playoffs, clap you hands (massive round of applause)

Also works with "If you all hate the Penguins, clap your hands"

Feel free to alter, rip apart, ridicule......

During the last minute Tortorella ignored the 5 on 4 and sent an extra man on the ice for retaliation (after deserving another penalty for delaying the game back and forth with the refs in wanting to send the right man for the job). That is so disgraceful that deserve disciplinary action - I would take away the US coach joob among the actions.

Then on the interviews he blamed Cooke for Vince injury. That is so lame and ridicolous, he looked mentally retarded. I don't normally go after someone in particular but the guy has issues.

I noticed that and couldnt believe how long it took for anyone on the ice to figure out what was going on. I actually thought the Caps were going to get a penalty on Fedorov's elbow on someone else (which happens right after Vinny goes down).
Cooke was clean.

Now the bigger issue. I have a ticket to tomorrow's game. BUT, I have yet to see the Caps win a game I attend in person. Should I go or stay home?

Posted by: tallbear | April 4, 2008 8:33 AM | Report abuse

Yeah, I thought there were a few other close calls with Cooke too. There is just something about that guy that I like. Hope he sticks around.

On another note, could Erskine have had a worse game? What is with the guy continuing to turn the puck over behind our net? Oh, and John, watch your stick please!

Whoever took the Semin from Tuesday night, please return him.

On a totally different topic. I wish there was a way to convince Ted/the NHL/the Almighty or powers that be that the Caps need to have their weeknight games start at 7:30 in lieu of 7:00. I've missed the opening face off at a minimum of 40% of the home games this year because of bobo DC traffic. I just don't see how that thirty minutes will deter families from coming to weeknight games...

Seedings, the picture gets clearer everyday.

If WAS has 94 points
3rd Seed
-if WAS beats FLA and
-CAR must lose to FLA in regulation or OT

6th Seed
-if WAS beats FLA and
-BOS must beat OTT in regulation and lose to BUF in regulation.

7th Seed
-if WAS beats FLA
-OTT must beat Boston.

8th Seed
-if WAS beats FLA
-OTT/BOS must go into OT and BOS beats BUF
-PHI must not win both games vs PIT and NJ

If WAS has 93 points
3rd seed
-If WAS has 93
-CAR must lose to FLA in regulation

6th seed unattainable

7th seed
-if WAS has 93
-BOS must only register 1 point in its final 2 games
-PHI must lost one of its last 2 games in regulation.

Obviously, if BOS gets a win, we get 8th if PHI losses to either PIT or NJ.

if we end with 92 points, 8th seed is the only chance.

@Yosh,

Given the cost of food in and around the VC, I actually think most families would appreciate the later start. Would give more time for an in home dinner for the kids before the games.

Wish we could use RFK with a shuttle to Verizon to set up a tailgate or two for Caps games in the Fall and Spring (which would also make 7:30 starts more appealing).

Good morning kids,

I've got a quick question for ya'll. I won't have access to cable television tomorrow night, and I'm flippin' a !@#$% at the possibility of being forced to listen to the last game of the season on the radio... does ANYONE know if there is a way (I'm happy to pay by the way) to watch NHL games streamed on your computer?? If anyone has any ideas/thoughts on this, I'd really appreciate your insight. My only other option is to buy tix to the game, and I have a feeling it's already sold out.

Posted by: NoCountryForCapsFans | April 4, 2008 8:57 AM | Report abuse

Well, i don't know any free solution there, but from the states and Canada you can use the NHL Center Ice.

From the rest of the world, espn360.com, which is what i use...

I'm glad to see Cooke being as disruptive as he has been, I remember GMGM saying when we picked him up that he'd be a fan favorite in no time, looks like it's coming to pass.

Posted by: AP | April 4, 2008 9:07 AM | Report abuse

The hit on Vinny was not interference nor was it a cheap shot. There was a similar hit in the Ott/Tor game on Alfredsson and no call was made (nor should there have been) with the exception of some calls due to Ott taking exception to it (i.e. Darcy Tucker). I wish TML put more energy into scoring goals than scoring hits.

buy a subscription to nhl center ice online to view the games online. You can watch up to 4 games at a time

I think you can buy access to the rest of the season/playoffs or a one day subscription.

Posted by: drew | April 4, 2008 9:24 AM | Report abuse

I'm not a big fan of Cooke's play style, but the hit on Vinny was just one of those things. Mo got hurt with a pretty hard board the game before and we're not screaming for a penalty. The puck was near, he hit him, he collided with another guy (unfortunate but irrelevent) and then cracked on the ice. Too bad, but get over it.

Torterella should be suspended for that stunt at the end of a game. Putting 5 goons on for a PK where they only were supposed to have 4 with 20 seconds left was bush league.

@NoCountryForCapsFans

I can provide you with links to online stream later today - couple of hours before the game. Depending on the type of stream, it requires that you use one of the following software:

TVU
SopCast
VLC Media Player

I suggest you install all three (they're free) if you want to see streamed games.

Ok:

NHL Center Ice: https://www.nhl.tv/team/secure/loginform?product=SEASON

You have to register, and then it should be pretty simple. Never been able to use it as i am not living in north america.

www.espn360.com

Juste click on "lauch video player"
You register for free and have access to all kind of highlights. To watch the games live, just need to pay a fee (24 hours is 6 or 7 dollars, access to all the games during this period)

Technicaly, just need a reasonable internet connection (they recommend at least 800 Kbps
), internet explorer and windows media player.

Regarding the starting times of weekday games, the 7:00 start times work for those of us who live in the boonies. It takes me about an hour to get home after a game (I live in Manassas). If the games started at 7:30, I'd be getting to bed at midnight with a 6:00 AM get-up. I understand the problem with people who go home first trying to make the start of the game. There is no right answer (except to play all games on Fridays and the weekends). It's a balancing act for the management.

Yosh:
I would prefer 7:30, too, but Ted says focus groups prefer 7:00 (they need to get the kiddies home in time for beddie bye).

Sorry - busy morning. Favorite? I don't know ... they're all good! :-) Go West is pretty cool ... and you could add Go Caps to it (where they say Go West). But I wonder how many people know that song? I bet everyone knows She'll Be Comin' Round - that might be good! Having said that, I must admit, I am not crazy about the Huet/Ole one - sounds more like Olie than Huet to me. :-( Speaking of, Olie continues to be a class act - smiling and celebrating with the guys after games and encouraging them as they exit the ice between periods.

Tarik:
How is Olie doing? Anything new on that front or is it just about the same? I see him chatting with Huet during breaks - I am curious as to what they talk about ... ?

Ok! I didn't see that, but watch out for this small line under:

"* Currently the Mac OS is not supported in Center Ice because the media player does not properly support videos with multiple bitstreams. Most Mac computers display the video in a pixelated or distorted manner."

Not a Mac expert, but i guess that as long as you have the Mac OSX 10.4 (or better), it should work fine :) Guess as well that the multiple bitstreams is for when you watch four games at a time...

If you have not seen it by now, Flash took a swing at Tarnasky (I think it was him) as he was skating away. Tarnasky turned around and punched Flash a few times and then all the boys jumped in.

As for Tortorella, I'm sure suspensions and fines are in order. There are of course glaring violations on his part but the most obvious to me, is that the home team always gets the last line change and he sent Lessard on as the 5th player after us. That combined with everything else should have Tortorella suspended next season, if he even is in the NHL!

Did it surprise anyone else that Tampa came out as strong as they did? In fact, I was really amazed at the fact that they pulled Ramo under 2 minutes down by 2 goals. WTF is that? Were they really pushing for a point that bad against us?

If Florida is under the same mentality, we better be ready to come out all cylinders firing. Hope the Caps take that lesson well for Saturday.

Thats exactly why you won't see a change in the 7:00 start time. Ted and Abe and the Lerners and a bunch of other owners of pro sports franchises want you in their stadia eating their ridiculously over-priced food, rather than eating dinner at home. Getting people home at a decent hour after the games may, in fact, be a part of the reason for the early starts, but so is their wanting a share of your food dollars.
