Caps Recall Bourque

With injuries mounting, the Capitals have recalled Chris Bourque from the minor league Hershey Bears this afternoon. Bourque, if you remember, was one of the last players cut after making a strong preseason bid to earn a spot on the opening night roster.

This morning, Coach Bruce Boudreau said that if the Caps recalled a forward, then it most likely meant that he would play Sergei Fedorov on defense tomorrow night against the Devils.

Sweet. Feds moving back to D, then..??

Posted by: jak | October 17, 2008 6:14 PM | Report abuse

Chris will do great with the Caps.

Here's his shot! Go Chris!

This is great for Bourque he definitely deserves it. Does this mean he won't be playing for the Bears tonight? I feel kind of bad for Alzner that Feds is working so well on D that it's become way less likely he'll be called up in the near future.

Damn. Now I won't get to see him play in Hershey Sat nite. Oh well, I will get to see him play with the Caps via DVR.

GO CHRIS!!!!!!!!

Ovechkin/Backstrom/Clark
Flash/Nylander/Semin
Bourque/Laich/Fehr
Steckel/Gordon/Bradley

Green/Morrisonn
Schultz/Erskine
Fedorov/Jurcina

Suggestions or changes? Kinda like (no pun intended) line 3 especially for some reason...

Boo, yup, I'm a trouble-maker. Wendel is an all pro judge of dufuses.

Here's a suggestion:
Take out Poti and Schultz (The Poti-Schultz line tends to give up more than their fair share of good scoring opportunities and seem a little soft about moving players out from in front of Theodore's crease)
and replace with Federov and Laing (Federov has shown himself to be a stellar defenseman. Using Green as an example, Laing would be a valuable offensive defenseman for the Caps).

Would like to see Clark down with Laich and Bourque and keep Fehr up with Ovie and Backstrom like it was at end of last night, or put Bourque with Ovie and Nicky like in the preseason.

hould be interesting and good to see #56 make some things happen like he has all seaon both here in pre-season and down with the Bears.
GO CAPS

DCFury: Having watched Alzner in the Bears games so far, he's not ready yet. His positioning needs work and he gets muscled off the puck sometimes. Let him stay in Hershey a month or two at least. Feds is a better choice on defense right now.

Yeah.. Sami > Alzner at this point.

Just saw that Neuvirth has been reassigned to South Carolina. So that settles the issue of loaning him to another AHL team.

Bears game is on sportsjuice.com right now in case there are any other losers like me out there with nothing better to do on a friday night.

Posted by: Jordan | October 17, 2008 7:29 PM | Report abuse

alzner will benefit from learning to play d at the ahl level hope caps stay patient

Backstrom is playing very bad IMO. He's our #3 right now (being generous). I think the Caps should give Fedorov and Ovechkin a try, they did great last time.

My ideal line for the west coast road trip:

Ovechkin/Fedorov/Laich
Fleischmann/Nylander/Semin
Clark/Backstrom/Fehr
Steckel/Gordon/Bradley

Green/Morrisonn
Schultz/Erskine
Poti or Lepisto/Jurcina

Varlamov is struggling in this game, and the team in taking way too many penalties. Sort of sounds like the Caps last night. Hope the Bears get a good result like the Caps did.

You nailed it wendel, I'm a short guy that thinks he knows it all. Thanks for crushing what remains of my self esteem with your rapier like whit.

So, do you have an opinion on Bourque being called up instead of Laing?

Posted by: Steve R | October 17, 2008 7:48 PM | Report abuse

@stevie sure do but why would i share it with a little dufus who was limited hockey knowledge like you

Posted by: wendel | October 17, 2008 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Tess: I missed the beginning of the game, did the report on Neuvirth come from John Walton?

Posted by: uncatim | October 17, 2008 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Steve R & Wendel could you guys take your internet slap fight to email or a private chat room instead of this thread?

Thanks, Tess. Tarik just reported it in a new thread.

guess who just scored for hershey stevie?

Posted by: wendel | October 17, 2008 8:10 PM | Report abuse

How does bringing up Bourque affect the salary cap. I guess we are just biding time until we can squeeze alzner in.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 17, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Yes he did, wendel. His first of the year! Congratulations Quintin!

Posted by: uncatim | October 17, 2008 8:12 PM | Report abuse

there's a new thread, folks.

Great that Bouque getting a chance. Bottom line. W'll do fine because of the core we have: Ovy, Backs, Semin, Nyls, Green, Feds.

Others will have great games here and there. But we can count on the above stars to score a @#$% load of goals/assists for us. We are blessed. This is OUR YEAR!

Posted by: LetsGoCaps | October 17, 2008 10:36 PM | Report abuse

Fedorov on D...this is going to stick, and it should because it's genius.

Posted by: Ben | October 18, 2008 12:05 AM | Report abuse

I think that one reason Bäckström is struggling so much is that the defenders on the other team are positively sitting on Ovechkin. They can't work off each other with Ovie being smothered by defenders, so neither is scoring.

But that leaves the other lines opportunity, because the top defensive lines from the other team can't be on the ice for everything.
