Caps Recall Helmer (Updated)

The Caps' injury problems continue to get worse. Looks like big minute, play-in-all-situations defenseman Tom Poti will miss tonight's game against Montreal with a groin pull.

Because of that, the Caps have signed and recalled 36-year-old minor league journeyman Bryan Helmer. He will replace Poti in the lineup against the Canadiens. Helmer is on the ice for practice right now. Helmer hasn't played in an NHL game since before the lockout.

Poti, by the way, is not on the ice and Graham Mink has been reassigned to Hershey. Boyd Gordon (back spasms) is, however, skating and it looks as though he'll be ready to go.

Meantime, Mike Green (bruised shoulder), Alexander Semin (upper back strain) and Sergei Fedorov (sprained ankle), John Erskine (mild concussion) are not skating.

So here's your lineup:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Fleischmann-Nylander-Fehr
Laich-Steckel-Bradley
Brashear-Gordon-Bourque

Defense
Lepisto-Morrisonn
Alzner-Jurcina
Helmer-Sloan (They were a pairing in Hershey).

More in a few minutes.

let me be the first to say...who?

Tarik,

Well, at least it's one more body for the defensive corps and that will help. Can you or have you found out anything about Semin? It seems more than an upper back strain if, one minute he's almost ready to play, and the next he's not even practicing. There seems to be a lot more to that one than what we've heard.

From the Caps Press Release:

Helmer, 36, is a 6'1", 215-pound 16-year pro from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He is the Bears captain and is second among team defensemen with eight assists. He has also recorded 14 penalty minutes in 21 games this year.

Helmer, who was undrafted, is a veteran of 134 NHL games and most recently played with the Phoenix Coyotes during the 2003-04 season. He also suited up for the St. Louis Blues and the Vancouver Canucks and has eight goals, 15 assists and 133 penalty minutes on his NHL resume.

gotta be a cap move. i'm guessing helmer comes at half the price of godfrey, pokulok, carlson. who would have guessed we'd be talking about salary cap constrants...on the high end. used to be we were worried about spending the minimum. the price of success.

tarik, any word on whether they are using "Hello my name is.." stickers or do they have their names in masking tape on the front of their helmets like in training camp?

i'll be there tonight and will definitely be printing out my lineup before hand.

Un-believable.....Is this some kind of record for most men out?

Posted by: SA-Town | November 28, 2008 10:17 AM | Report abuse

why did we just bring up a 36 year-old defenseman?

Posted by: _stevo | November 28, 2008 10:17 AM | Report abuse

Maybe we should forfeit and just let everyone rest.

Posted by: SA-Town | November 28, 2008 10:19 AM | Report abuse

I saw Helmer at a Bears game this month and he is a no nonsense, stay at home defender. Not flashy but solid and has a some grit to him too... Not sure if his skating is totally NHL level, but he should do fine with the right partner.
Is this injury thing the most bizarre thing ever? If we are still even close to 1st in the Southeast by the end of 2008, we should be happy and feel good about our chances. Go Caps!

Because your BF has a headache. He got his bell rung on Wednesday apparently. He won't play tonight, maybe next Tuesday. Poti's out with a groin pull. And you don't want Bradley playing D.

This reminds me of a few years ago when they were all dropping like flies from the flu.

Posted by: Capitals8 | November 28, 2008 10:25 AM | Report abuse

helmer is a great stay at home dman as stated by roose. the reason your not seeing godfrey pokulok carlson...carlson is i believe still playing juniors...godfrey is a lost puppy when on the ice, is nowhere near ready for nhl play, hes only starting to get familiar with the ahl...and pokoluk is just bad, in this situation right helmer is your best bet. the only other guy would be greg amadio, but without him in hersheywe have noone to defend our smaller players

Except now the team is much deeper and the Caps can still field a legitimate, if a bit green, team.

It's going to be an interesting night tonight. From the Caps webpage on tonight's game:

"Montreal netminder Carey Price is in the midst of a strong stretch between the pipes. He has allowed two or fewer goals in each of his last six starts. Price is 3-1-2 with a 1.76 GAA and a .939 save pct. during that span."

Posted by: Greg S. | November 28, 2008 10:39 AM | Report abuse

Agreed.

Posted by: Greg S. | November 28, 2008 10:40 AM | Report abuse

Oh man Poti out now too. Our best defensemen this year. It really blow because I think the Canadians are not as good as they think they are. Its an opportunity for the new guys to play their lights out and fight for a spot.

Posted by: cirrus_nine | November 28, 2008 10:41 AM | Report abuse

and this is why you don't get over excited during the off season. Helmer? let's trade for Heward.

Habs fan Here, just wanted to say looking forward to tonights game, I love the caps also not as much as the habs but i love your team , just wanted to say hope its a good game tonight!

Why dont the Caps just put Semin long term Cap injury ward? I bet he will be out for another 10 games at this rate.

Posted by: cirrus_nine | November 28, 2008 10:45 AM | Report abuse

i envy all of you for having my favorite and one of the most passionate and great players in the nhl, I wish we had an ovechkin...

Anyone keeping the spreadsheet of man-games lost to injury this season yet? Even discounting Pothier, we're going to be coming up on 100 pretty quick, in November - that's got to be getting near a franchise high.

Posted by: KurtNYC | November 28, 2008 10:48 AM | Report abuse

apparently the verizon center to accommodate Canadiens coming to our lovely arena will be playing all kinds of garbage Canadien music....rush, nickelback, shania twain, etc

Posted by: _stevo | November 28, 2008 10:48 AM | Report abuse

They should build a medical ward at Kettler.

@komisaurus
You realize you are playing a minor league team tonight dont you? If you cant win, Mr. Guy should be fired.

Posted by: SA-Town | November 28, 2008 10:49 AM | Report abuse

That music doesnt sound very accomodating...

Posted by: komisaurus | November 28, 2008 10:49 AM | Report abuse

I didn't see Helmer's cap number info on nhlnumbers or nhlscap, but I can only guess he's making the NHL minimum.

Tonight should be interesting. I'm thinking we don't have a prayer unless we score 5 or more.

"i envy all of you for having my favorite and one of the most passionate and great players in the nhl, I wish we had an ovechkin.."

You guys already have all the all stars i n the east. You dont need Ovi.

Posted by: cirrus_nine | November 28, 2008 10:51 AM | Report abuse

@Sombrero Guy

You think we try to outscore them tonight? I would hope if we get a lead we dont try to drop back and play a trap. Jose will be in for a busy evening.

Posted by: SA-Town | November 28, 2008 10:51 AM | Report abuse

Greg S. Except I think I read somewhere that Montreal isn't playing Price tonight? Don't have a link to confirm.

UNLEASH THE HERSHEY!

...you know, more than half our D is brown. ./~ Fetch me old brown trousers ./~

Trust me if we lose i wouldnt be so surprised as our team has been very jekyll & hyde this year but the detroit game was there best showing

Posted by: komisaurus | November 28, 2008 10:52 AM | Report abuse

caps will play a 1-2-2 trap tonight and employ a four corners defense. only two players allowed on the offensive side of the red line at any time. team will commit a few too many men penalties as they get confused when BB says "hey whats your name, your next up". team will hope for a 0-0 tie and shootout.

Were playing Halak tonight

Posted by: komisaurus | November 28, 2008 10:53 AM | Report abuse

I think the Caps screwed up when they build Kettler on top of a parking garage. They should have built on top of a hospital.

Washington is in the east you know that right along with green and semin on your team, i dont know if ur saying montreal in general has all the all stars or just the east in general

Hello everyone ... i have been reading and enjoying your posts here for quite some time ... i would like to compliment you as a group for the extrememly informative and often diversly insightful comments and observations ... it has been an incredibly enjoyable source of information for a guy stranded far outside Caps Country ... i was born in DC and lived on the east coast most of my life ... i have been a huge Caps fan for many years and of course ... a die-hard Redskins fan as well ... but hockey holds my heart ... unfortunately i was transplanted to Ohio about 12 years ago where i currently own a business ... your forum has allowed me to feel "in touch" with the Capitals family from afar ... i finally decided to join the conversation rather than continue to watch from the shadows ... i think you are a very balanced group that encourages varying viewpoints and i very much like the way you handle conflict when it occasionally arises ... thanks for all your great info ... and hopefully i can add some fun and insight to your group as well ... Go Caps !!!

Well, we'll see what kind of team we can field. 4 of our 6 starting D-men, 2 premier forwards, the captain, and possibly one utility forward all out. We'll be missing 52 points in Semin, Green and Fedorov alone.

Posted by: Greg S. | November 28, 2008 10:57 AM | Report abuse

I would trade 3 of our best young players to have a player with the passion that ovechkin has we have some good depth also

Posted by: komisaurus | November 28, 2008 10:58 AM | Report abuse

I would still take our fill-in D over the Tampa D. If we can manage to take two points tonight over a good Montreal team...it would be a hugh confidence builder for the rest of the season.

No BGL hes nursing as to actually having to play and skate around against lucic the other day...

Ya know?? Sometimes I can read. Well we dodged that bullet, we get the backup goalie and not the hot hand.

Still an uphill battle.

komisaurus, I think he's refering to the all star voting and the fact that Montreal has voted all Habs to the starting line up.

Posted by: fashi13 | November 28, 2008 11:06 AM | Report abuse

my bad i didnt realize well i live in montreal and its no surprise they voted for just mtl players but i voted for ovy green and semin only cause i love ovy as a player and semin and green have been working wonders for me in my pool...

Posted by: SA-Town | November 28, 2008 11:09 AM | Report abuse

but i hate the fact we cant find out the extent of there injuries, its like a tease first there coming back and then there not skating...

Posted by: komisaurus | November 28, 2008 11:11 AM | Report abuse

NO BGL in the lineup tonight sorry if i wasnt clear...

Posted by: komisaurus | November 28, 2008 11:12 AM | Report abuse

komisaurus: Welcome to the clown car, since nobody's replied to you yet. :) So I was right and you guys are putting Halak in net tonight? I'm guessing Theodore in net for us but not sure. Should be a damned interesting game.

Brash/Gordon/Bourque should be a neat line to watch. I might be alone in this, but I actually don't dislike the forward lines as posted. The top two lines are solid and are starting to gel; I really hope that Fehr doesn't get benched when Semin returns.

I think the story of the night for me will be to see what the D does. That will tell me at least a lot about where we're headed. I didn't see the Atlanta game but maybe 3 goals on 18 shots makes me a tad nervous about goaltending?

Posted by: kittypawz | November 28, 2008 11:12 AM | Report abuse

Kitty thanks for the reply but some people have been talkin, its good to come to a website where we can get along and have a civil convo unlike trying to do so with bruins or philly fans where there best comebacks are "french sucks", im not french mind you but its a pretty sad comeback if u ask me lol hate those 2 teams...

Also, welcome obx13 :) Glad you enjoy this little bunch.

It's true that Washington's got it's share of smoking stars right now, and enough up and coming to weather what I would swear is some sort of hideous curse if I didn't know better.

I look forward to seeing what the Caps can be when we're firing on all cylinders with a healthy roster.

Posted by: BlondeCapsFan | November 28, 2008 11:19 AM | Report abuse

@SA Town - Hah, I think our only option will be to outscore. Given the lack of experience on the D line I would be shocked if the Habs scored less than 4. We gave up 3 to the Thrashers, and still had Poti for most of that game.

Also, when the Caps stop being aggressive, they tend to get man handled. Our best Defense is a tenacious forechecking offense.

Posted by: SombreroGuy | November 28, 2008 11:19 AM | Report abuse

komisaurus: Philly fans just plain suck to deal with. Believe me, we know from the playoffs last year. >.

To give you an idea, I was jazzed when Southwest managed to find me a seat on a flight back to DC in time to make the Habs game. I loves me some ticket printing at the window

I do have to say that if we weather this storm of injuries with better than .500, the credit goes to our drafting and developing, because DAMN.

Posted by: kittypawz | November 28, 2008 11:22 AM | Report abuse

what the hell is wrong with green and semin, they were supposed to be close last weekend, now they cant even skate? they have upper body injuries for gods sake, this is not good.

Posted by: ahbest3 | November 28, 2008 11:22 AM | Report abuse

This past January, when Helmer was with the San Antonio Rampage, he became the fourth active AHL player to reach the 1,000 professional games played milestone. He has played in 869 career AHL games, which is the most among active AHL players. His 350 are also the most among active AHL players.

Helmer is available to play in tonight’s game against the Montreal Canadiens and would wear No. 43 for the Capitals.

a dubious destinction to have played the more games amongst minor leaguers. sounds like crash davis...

Re: Semin - I think it is Ovjetkin's blog that said Semin gave a response to some Russian paper that it is a shoulder injury. Would certainly jive with how long he's been out. I am still hoping he'll be back soon, but have resigned myself to the fact Feds is out for a while with Tarik's comments about him limping around all the time.

Posted by: vkova10 | November 28, 2008 11:26 AM | Report abuse

The Flash-Nylander-Fehr line does look really good out there now. Flash looks comfortable now and Fehr is getting there. Nylander found a rhythm with two guys to dish the puck to.

Now that AO and Backstrom are scoring, Kozlov's working the boards and center like a deamon.

With 4 of the 6 D-men out, though... Yikes! We'll have to see how the callups do. This is their chance to show the bosses what they can do.

Posted by: Greg S. | November 28, 2008 11:29 AM | Report abuse

I think they fact that the hurt guys arent skating this a.m. is more to open the ice up for drills for the active guys.

I wouldnt be surprised if the hurt guys skate after.

Someone in the Caps organization must have done something very wrong with the kind of injury bug we've got. Karma doesn't seem to be on our side right now... Let's hope we get ours later then, and keep our heads up during this rough time. I still think we could win this one, just have to stay tenacious.

put semin federov and green on ir and save the money so down the road we can bring up the best players not just the cheapest. waiting for a couple of weaks to move isnt helping our cap space. Do we have a team doctor is gmgm looking after the medical issues to save money?

Seriously wtf is going on with Mike Green? Is his bruised shoulder really just that or did Pronger screw his shoulder up more than that?

Green is the most exciting d-man in the league and I really hope that he's at least back for the Caps upcoming game in Toronto as I'm getting tickets for that big tilt!

I live in Toronto so naturally my favorite team is the Maple Leafs but my 2nd favorite is the Capitals and I have both Ovechkin and Green in my elite hockey pool so I need "Lambogreenie" back ASAP!!

Great community here btw Tarik, you have a very engaged and knowledgeable audience.
