Caps recall John Carlson

The Caps have recalled rookie John Carlson from the Hershey Bears. The reason is unclear, but it could have something to do with fellow defenseman Mike Green, who did not practice yesterday.

More to come from Pittsburgh soon.

Bringing out the big guns. Hopefully we play our best game of the year so far tonight. Can't wait.

First!!! We need Mike Green tonight. Glad to hear Carlson is back!

Posted by: Capsnskins1 | January 21, 2010 11:09 AM | Report abuse

Second lol. We need to take it to the Pens tonight. I'm talking a 7-3 throbbing. I expect Ovi to have 10+ shots on goal tonight. As a team around 45 shots.

I'd hate for Greenie to miss this one.

Posted by: --Boo-- | January 21, 2010 11:12 AM | Report abuse

Hopefully Green will be out for a substantial length of time so we can have alzner and carlson so we can have some actual defense.

Posted by: SovietSnipes | January 21, 2010 11:16 AM | Report abuse

damn, Green is needed. if for no other reason as a PP threat. plus his willingness to uncork the hard slapper always seems to make for juicy rebounds in front of the net.

also, i hate the Pens and their sniveling fans.

Posted by: doughless | January 21, 2010 11:17 AM | Report abuse

but BMo in Green's pp spot which gives us a left handed shot on the right point which is favorable to another righty.

Posted by: SovietSnipes | January 21, 2010 11:19 AM | Report abuse

Ya know Boo, it's always amusing to chat with Pens fans in the stands at Verizon. I never knew that the only reason that Verizon sells out is because of the bandwagon fans. Who'd a thunk it?

They never can answer me though when I ask them about their dismal attendence at the Igloo during the pre-Sid 2000's. I guess the faithful Pen's fans were waiting for Mario version 2.0 to appear, eh?

Jschon,

your mistake was understandable. We have Charlie Trolls here, so of course you are going to reference God!

I myself like it when the little black rubber thing goes in the net thingy and the lights go on and everyone is so happy! Except the other team. Then they are sad!

See, I know a lot about hockey!

Oh, a little piece of advice for those of you that dislike Crosby and want to continue to dislike Crosby. DON'T WATCH THE NHL NETWORK SPECIAL ABOUT HIM BRINGING THE CUP HOME. Over the past two years I doubt anyone disliked Crosby more than me. I didn't mind him when he joined the league, but his constant complaining made me dislike him. Then I made the mistake of watching that stupid special on teh NHL network and now I kind of like the kid. NOT A FAN, please don't get me wrong. It did make me see that he still still a humble, small town kid, that is excited to be living the dream of playing in the NHL. Much like our Ovi, he appreciates that he gets to play hockey for a living. He was great to the people of his home town, carried the Cup around in hospitals, and was even (this was said by the famous Stanley Cup dude) the first player to ask if he could wash the Stanley Cup after a long day of being passed around.

Anyhow, again if you want to keep your dislike, or hatred for Crosby at a high level DO NOT WATCH the special.

That is all.

I hope you're joking.

Posted by: JD09 | January 21, 2010 11:23 AM | Report abuse

@fanohock - I'm sure Crosby is kind to his mother and visits sick kids in hospital. On the ice, he dives at every opportunity, whines constantly to the referees, and engages in physical play only if he can cheap shot an unsuspecting player. As the face of the league, he has zero personality. I don't hate him, but I hate the way that the league protects him and forces him on the fan base.

for anyone who thinks the caps need an enforcerer - Laraque is now available.

Posted by: capsfansince74 | January 21, 2010 11:28 AM | Report abuse

For those that believe the Caps need an enforcer.

Georges Laraque will not play another game with the Montreal Canadiens. GM Bob Gainey contacted the winger Thursday morning and said the club will buy out the rest of his contract at the end of the 2009-10 campaign.

Wow, you must have gotten hold of some really bad stuff. Put the pipe away and go back to your teams website.

I think SovietSnipes should be indoctrinated into the Doofus Brigade. Where's tominfl?

So what I am getting from you all is that no capitals fan can not like mike green? Thats insane, heaven forbid i like my defensemen to play defense. I think mike green is awful, he makes turnovers that directly result in goals. He is afraid to hit people. I can't see the logic in using a defenseman that is a defensive liability.

No what you are getting is Caps fans who disagree with your assessment of Green's performance. Back your opinion up with stats and maybe I'll pay attention. Go do your research and you may be pleasantly surprised.

@bigschu8

I would love for McPhee to pick BGL up. He has more hockey skill than Brashear and is more disciplined when it comes to stupid penalties, plus he's a top 5 fighter.

You have to be kidding , Mike Green afraid to hit someone. Watch some games.

Posted by: Capsyoungguns | January 21, 2010 11:52 AM | Report abuse

So Soviet, humor me. Who would you rather see get Green's 5M per year?

Also, if he sucks so much, how do you explain the +20?

Also, see the attached. He's tied for second on the team for hits. Your thoughts on that?

@Capsyoungguns

Agreed, Sloan has been terrible of late.

Posted by: FLDave | January 21, 2010 11:54 AM | Report abuse

@ SocietSnipes
Mike Green is a big part of the success of the Caps. Yes, he may make some mistakes but he plays 30 minutes per game and plays during all the key situations during a game. BB gives him the green light and expects him to take risks. He is a Norris trophy candidate. We have the best PP on the planet. Is he the best defenceman in the league? No, but the best defenceman in the league doesnt have 50 pts either. I'm not saying you have to like him, but i think he adds another dangerous aspect to the Caps that other teams have to deal with thus opening up other players on the ice to be successful.

Posted by: bigschu8 | January 21, 2010 11:56 AM | Report abuse

Soviet,

Green is tied for first on the team in blocked shots. Isn't that something that you have to do in the defensive end while playing defense?

Posted by: Steve_R | January 21, 2010 11:56 AM | Report abuse

Do we really need to go over the Green debate again? You don’t have to like every Capital, but at the same time you shouldn’t make idiotic comments. So, you would honestly drop a defenseman who has averaged over 50 points for the past three seasons, and who’s currently ranked 13th overall??? Seriously??? And you think he’s afraid to hit? Do you watch the games? That’s just idiotic. Plus, his defensive skills have improved tremendously this year. He’s more responsible about skating the puck up and he plays smart on the odd man rushes.

Sloan's made me throw my arms up a lot recently.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 21, 2010 11:58 AM | Report abuse

Let us hope Greenie can play. Mr. Snipes apparently has a myopic view of how hockey is played and the value of the +/- minus system that related goals scored to goals given up. Green has a very high +/-. We will need his scoring capacity. That said, I hope Carlson introduces himself to Sid in a big big way.

Posted by: adhardwick | January 21, 2010 11:58 AM | Report abuse

they might as well have both Carlson and Alzer in the lineup and see if they will be able to contribute in the playoffs this year... if they don't feel they're ready, they better go out and get another d-man

Posted by: joek443 | January 21, 2010 11:59 AM | Report abuse

If we didn't have Green on the team, people would be dying for an offensive puck-moving d-man. Do you understand how important it is to have mobility and good passers on the back-end?

Do you know how much the Pens feel Gonchar's absence when he's injured???

I wish Pothier and Erskine would get healthy...

Who wouldn't want to see the D pairings of

Shultz-Green
Alzner- Pothier
Carlson - Erskine/Poti

We may not need another D man after all. Although you've got Morrisonn and Sloan for bait as well as many others.

Bradley and Erskine are enforcer enough for this team.

Ovi goes through a slump because of his girlfriend in Russia. Breaks up with her, goes on a scoring tear!

Never hear that with Syd. Is it because Mario doesn't want the press to know about his daughters dating habits?

Posted by: Leeguru | January 21, 2010 12:06 PM | Report abuse

fanohock,

Feel free to dislike Crosby freely. Everyone takes the Cup to hospitals, and of course its always easy to act classy when you're on top. its how a guy behaves when chips are down that reveals his real character, and Crosby is a sniveling, blindsiding crotch puncher there.

His reputation throughout the league (not just Caps fans) as a diver and whiner is set in stone-- it flies in the face of the true hockey ethic. he's an incredible talent, but he's not humble, regardless of the size of the town he comes from. OV has him beat by a factor of 50 on character.

I can't believe we had someone stick up for Crosby here. Crosby is a female reproductive organ. He's a whining, cowardly little boy. Obviously he's skilled or else he wouldn't be worth hating, but nothing you said changes what people hate about him. We don't think he's a murderer, just a whiner and a coward.

Kudos to the Green defenders (pun intended). He's a monster and one of our MVPs.

Personally, I think Erskine and Poti need to play this year while they are here. I could see moving one of them in the off season to clear room for Alzner and/or Carlson but while they are here, they need to play. But, I love Erskine so I'm biased.

Also, I thought Sloan was better the last couple of games he played.

Posted by: Avar | January 21, 2010 12:20 PM | Report abuse

Joek443,

I respect him for his skills on the ice. I respect the Pens as a team for their skills. I wish Malkin was one of ours. I can't stand Pens fans, and Crosby's behavior off the ice and away from the play are embarrassing for a fan of hockey. And the way the League has shoved him down our throats is annoying. And I'm sure other cities don't like having Ovi shoved down their throats.

But I certainly do not FEAR Crosby.

Posted by: Leeguru | January 21, 2010 12:20 PM | Report abuse

As I recall, Cindy was on the bench with a boo-boo when his team won the Cup.

Posted by: zmega | January 21, 2010 12:23 PM | Report abuse

I usually fall into the camp of "sticking up for Crosby".

But that would be for his amazing hockey skill and vision on the ice. Seriously, watching him play is pretty amazing. Pens fans, Caps fans..both are fortunate to be able to watch some talent on the ice every single game.

However, he is a huge whiner. That reputation hasn't faded, in fact, it's picked up. He was voted whiniest player by NHL players by over 50% last year. Not to mention all the videos that surface up about him. And I have to agree that the guy doesn't come off as humble. He carries a pompous air about him in interviews and such.

Phil,

When the Pens lose, the interviews I've seen he never gives credit to the other team. Saw one where he states that they lost because of a couple of cheapies. So he bashes his goalie in the process of dismissing the other team.

so since Ovie is such a nice guy and Crosby is such a whiner, most of you will not have any problem if Sid ends up winning 5 Cups and Ovie ends up winning about 8 Harts but no Rings, right?

it's all about the personality, ain't it???

Posted by: joek443 | January 21, 2010 12:36 PM | Report abuse

Joe, what, in any of anyones posts, indicates us Caps fans would be happy without a Stanley Cup?

Posted by: Leeguru | January 21, 2010 12:38 PM | Report abuse

@Steve

Yeah, he reminds me of Peyton Manning in that regard. First one to blame others for losing or playing badly. I'll never forget Manning getting in one of his OLineman's face after he threw an INT and reaming him out for a couple minutes on the field and then on the sideline. He wasn't even pressured on that play.

Posted by: jsnyd1 | January 21, 2010 12:39 PM | Report abuse

It's just another game as far as I am concerned. For starters, I couldn't care less about how other people feel about the Crosby vs Ovechkin debate. But more importantly, as BB pointed out, we were 3-0-1 against the Pens last year. A win or a loss tonight makes very little difference in the grand scheme of things. Feeling very unemotional about this one in comparison to the hype.

Root for the Caps but do it with class, personal insults to opposite players only shows what an immature person you are - By the way, they probably will never read them anyway.

I wasn't sticking up for Crosby, I was just warning all Caps fans that want to continue to dislike him, like I did, to avoid watching the NHL Network special. It humanized him for him, and I friggin' hate it. I have watched the Pens and the rest of the NHL on Center Ice all season, but since he Crosby finally plays the Caps for the 1st time this season my dislike or hatred for him will probably percolate tonight when he starts his whining.

Oh, I know Ovi has 50 times the personality, Ovi is the man. If you haven't had a chance you all need to check out the video on the Caps website that has Ovi going around interviewing Green, Backs, Laich, his body double, and the hair lady on the set of the commercial that first aired during the winter classic. The one where the Caps and Flyers were snowed in and skated on the tarmac.

At one point he interviewed a kid that looks to be about 18 that is Ovi's body double during the commercial. So Ovi starts asking the kid questions like he is Ovi himself. He asks, so what do you think about the suspension and being accused of being a dirty player. The kid goes, oh, it was an accident, I'm sorry. Ovi looked at him without cracking a smile and said DON'T BE SORRY, and the kid answered, OK, I'm not sorry. You have to see the video to appreciate it. It is on the Caps webpage in the multimedia area in the Capsmedia365 pull down. It is on the bottom as the most viewed videos.

Trust me fellow Caps fans, I AM NOT a Crosby fan, nor trying to make any of you a Crosby fan. LET'S GO CAPS!

I was a huge fan of Sloan, and really wanted him to do well. But as someone said a while back- his best game was his first game- in Calgary. He served up that clean, monster hit on Langkow (and was pummeld for it). Too bad- I like that dude and would like to see him up his game a bit- he's got 2 more years to prove he can.
