Caps Return to Calgary

The Caps' first visit to the Saddledome since Oct. 30, 2006 has created quite a buzz in Calgary leading up to tonight's game (The Caps' high number of Alberta and other Western Canada natives probably doesn't hurt either).

So for your morning reading, here are some of the stories that greeted the Caps in Calgary.

From The Calgary Sun: Hard to hate No. 8, Not easy being Green, Dream debut for Sloan, and Flames blueliners prepare for Russian invasion

From the Calgary Herald: No. 8 never keeps it vanilla

A high number of Alberta natives in Calgary? Who'd have guessed it? I would have figured them to be British Columbians, or maybe even Montanans.

From last post...

Our "friends" in Proteau's column. It's pretty good. Here's the article:

5. The odds of Sidney Crosby saying something even remotely controversial are slightly worse than the chances of:

(a) NHL commissioner Gary Bettman accepting the premise of a reporter’s negative question.

(b) The Atlanta Thrashers doing the right thing by burning every last one of their new third jerseys, and burying the ashes in a leak-proof container at least 1,000 feet below the earth’s surface.

(c) Making it through a season without the “The” in “The Hockey News” being dropped by people and media outlets that aren’t sticklers for accuracy.

(d) The NHL rulebook being properly utilized by the officials.

Did anyone else catch this little bit of the last story Tarik posted?

""It's nothing special. Nothing personal," says Ovechkin, managing to maintain a straight face. "I like him. He's my friend. But when we go to the ice, we're not friends. We're rivals."

Ovechkin, though, brightens when discussing the aftermath of their on-going tiff -- namely, surfing for chat-board give and take.

"I like this stuff, you know," he says, smiling. "I always go to the Caps' message board and read what they say about our game, about my game. Right now, it's pretty funny."

I sure hope he scores goals tonight.

wow, interesting story about Sloan. I had no idea. I wish him well and hope he has a great game tonite. GO CAPS!!!

I don't care who scores as long as the Caps win (and no more missing players). OK, I do want OV to break out of his slump, see Backs shoot on net and into the net, and see Clark gaining more confidence. On top of it all, I love OV's team first attitude.

Sean Avery is the "Dennis Rodman" of the NHL. Lets hope he is spending more time on the "runway" soon, as opposed to spending it with the press making idiotic comments about the NHL and players like Jerome Iginla.

Not a mention of Semin in any of those articles... still under the radar, I guess. He gets a hat trick tonight, well, someone does.

Where are all the Seminhaters (the h is silent) at?

They're too busy hating Jose.

Posted by: Jordan | October 21, 2008 10:27 AM | Report abuse

Quite a story behind Sloan. Hope the team can come away with the win for the lad.

Also, seems like Ovechkin is going to make a lot of fans of other teams take on the Caps as their second favourite team. He needs to have a word with himself regarding the dodgy headgear though.

828, it's like all the other Washington area hater (Portis/Olie/Nats/whoever) they're quite until he makes a little mistake and the world begins to end

The Sun covers the Flames on game day the way the Post does for the redskins on Game day. Multi stories, always fun to read how the other teams home town paper write from their angle.

Posted by: Rich C | October 21, 2008 10:32 AM | Report abuse

@828....actually they did mention Semin the 3 things to watch sidebar. How the Alex leading the caps in scoring has Semin on the back on his sweater.

Posted by: Rich C | October 21, 2008 10:35 AM | Report abuse

The Canadian media has so much more class (and passion for the game) than those bone-head writers up in Philly and Pittsburgh.

okay the countdown continues. (by the way either yesterday's Zoo took off sick so they could post ad nasuem or today the boss said no wasting time at work.)

HOW MANY GOALS is THE SWISS CHEESE FACTORY going to let in tonight?

Me me spot on says 4!!!!

Posted by: JT's Swiss CHeese Factory | October 21, 2008 10:42 AM | Report abuse

He's there. Just not in these articles. Check out the "Three Storylines to Watch" article. First one reads:

1. Alex The Other Great: Sure the one named Ovechkin is the reigning MVP, but the NHL's leading scorer has 'Semin' stitched on the back of his sweater. Alexander Semin has six goals and four assists in the first five games.

Unfortunately, Bertuzzi is still allowed to play hockey. I really hate that goon.

Posted by: Greg S. | October 21, 2008 10:54 AM | Report abuse

Tarik, you need to have the WaPo give you a team of 5 writers so you can have pages of stories too. ;) The one on Sloan is a great human interest/ feel good story. I usually hate that schmaltz, but this one, not too bad. (Now, to be fair to the WaPo, there isn't much else to do in Calgary. You can cover the Flames, the Hitmen, the Stampeders or you're doing weather... "Today, cold. Tomorrow, colder. This weekend, heat wave: highs near 20.")

The Calgary fans are usually good folks. The trolls who pop up here are the exception. At last year's game, the guy ahead of me wearing a Phanuef jersey took it in stride when I told him that Phanuef was named after Canada's contribution to world music...

Greg S. - where is that article?

How annoying is that guy?

Great game day links-thanks.

LOL @ Ovie's quote regarding attending the Redskins game

"I don't want to talk about hockey. I want to have fun with my teammates and go eat nachos and drink Coke."

Rich C-

My thoughts as well. I'm always surfing looking for good hockey stories. Checking out the team the Caps play web site and newspapers pre and post game usually produces a good read or two.

My thought for the day. I watched the Bruins/Penguins game last night (great game) Anyone else been keeping tabs on Phil Kessell? I do, as I thought we might draft him three yers ago. The guy is about as hot as Semin right now. He has always destroyed goalies in the SO including torching the Caps on several occasions. I have to give Kudos to the guy. He had a seemingly bad rap coming out of the draft, overcame testicular cancer, and has been scratched/benched several times over the years, and been speculated to be on the trade block. It looks to me that he's the real deal now. Good for Phil.

LOL!! Don't be so proud of yourself ... ;-)

I hear ya - the more popular the Caps get, the more creepy folks appear and the more selective blog reading becomes.

I am sure our paths will cross at some point! Given the limited number of games when I am in town between now and the end of the year, it may not happen until 2009, but I would be willing to bet that it will happen this season.

Now, who is ready for some hockey?!? :-D

Posted by: Boo! | October 21, 2008 11:24 AM | Report abuse

@ Riddler
I've been keepin tabs on Kessel as well. I first noticed him in the World Juniors a few years back, he dominated. He's quick, right handed, extremely creative with the stick, and most importantly American! All of my favorite things in a hockey player. He was available when we drafted Backstrom, at the time I was praying that we'd pick Kessel, but glad we got Nicky now. We don't need another right handed goal scorer taking up both Alexes ice time.

Anyway, i picked him up off waivers and put him on my fantasy team. next best thing ,i guess.

That bos/pit game was good. Phil is money in the shootout.

Old Time Hockey,
A heat wave is when the weather gets to around the 20 mark isn't it? Well, it is in Manchester.

Calgary will always have better media coverage than we do (no offense Tarik). It's one of those things.

I won't get back from the United match until about 10.30 and will be too wired to go to bed straight away. Not much chance of me going to bed and waking up at 3am!

Where is everyone watching tonight? Will it be too late for watching in bars on a weeknight?

Posted by: Dave UK Caps Fan | October 21, 2008 11:51 AM | Report abuse

I am sure that there will be places to watch it, but I will be at home snug as a bug in a rug, hoping to make it until the final horn (I was up late last night and early this AM, so I may fade before it's over). Have fun at the United match tonight - rock the red!! ;-)

You're probably reading this based on your interview in the Calgary sports pages.

Tampa claimed Pettinger off of waivers. I'm still trying to figure out why....

Posted by: Steve R | October 21, 2008 12:57 PM | Report abuse

Perhaps because Tampa has a bunch of star players who can score, but right now there is no one on the team who is willing to work hard enough to make it happen. Pettinger will not be the guy on the team with the most talent but he might be the guy to show the talent how to work. i have always been a fan of character on hockey teams, Tampa is showing litttle character and I suspect Olie had something to do with the Pettinger pick up and I suspect it was his work ethic they grabbed him for.

Ohhhh, nice stats, Kyppie!

"This season, Kiprusoff has been the main culprit in the Flames' struggles, posting a 4.37 goals-against average after turning in a 2.69 mark last season."

Makes JT's look fantastic. Still, I'm not advocating throwing anyone under the bus yet. IMHO, JT's looking better each game.

Because Tampa has seen how great Caps and Pens have been/could be and, in a desperate attempt to fix their struggling team, have decided to take whatever castoffs they can. How many of the guys on the TBL roster have worn a Caps or Pens sweater in their careers?

Rich C,

If only it was that easy. Caps games (and NHL games in general for that matter) are rarely show on TV. I do have a Tivo-like service over here but it's no use if the games aren't on TV.

The ESPN thing Sombrero Guy pointed out before should solve a lot of those late night issues.

@ Dave UK,

If you're talking celius, then yes, 20 would be warm, especially in the UK, where room tempature is like 5. ;)

Seriously, I've spent a fair amount of time on your island and the Northern Dominion, and I'll say that while the the Highlands of Scotland can be pretty unpleasant especially in winter, nothing habitable can beat Western Canada for pure bone-chiling and soul-crushing cold.

@Greg S: Agreed on JT. He looks better every time he plays. He didn't look half bad in the last two periods against Pitt. Of course, Johnson's on a roll at the moment, but remember two things: 1. Johnson's got a shot at the #1 spot right now. 2. This is a contract year for him (IIRC). Johnson's got motivation to shine right now, which can only be good for us.

Re: Celsius: Not quite. 20° C is about 68° F. 5° C is about 40° F. I don't know about you, but if I kept my apartment at 40° F / 5° C, my pipes would be at risk of freezing, and so would my poor cats.

How is that, exactly?

I got pretty good at approximating the conversion from C to F and back. The C=>F take Celsius x 2 then add 30.

Posted by: Greg S. | October 21, 2008 2:34 PM | Report abuse

I think Johnson's looking quite good. I still don't see him in a Caps uni at the end of the year, though. We have too many goalies in the pipeline. One of them needs to come up at the end and get some experience in the bigs under JT. I think a team will snatch him up pretty quickly and give picks for him. Or a D-man.

I like this team right now.
