Caps Sign Goalie Neuvirth
The Caps have signed goaltending prospect Michal Neuvirth to a three-year entry-level contract beginning next season. The 19-year-old was a second-round selection of the Capitals, 34th overall, last June.
A native of the Czech Republic, Neuvirth just wrapped an impressive season with the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL. He was named the league's All-Star second team goalie and was runner-up for goalie of the year.
Neuvirth is expected to attend the Capitals summer development camp, July 11-14 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

Plymouth has Smith who is another good goalie. Curious where he'll end up this next year.

Does Max D. have a shot at making the caps as a backup? or would Neuvirth be heading to the Stingrays? This just makes me wonder if Johnson - or Cassivi - needs to be worried about their jobs. I guess this is a good sign though, GMGM is at least going through the motions of preparing for Olie's eventual departure.
On another note, how many more years do the Caps have the rights to Varlamov?

I say Max is out, the Caps are not gonna re-up him. Machesney and Neuvirth will be fighting for that spot behind Cassivi (though there are rumours floating around he might be headed to Europe. That would totally change the complexity of the situation) at training camp. The loser of this duel will play for the stingrays.

I don't see anyone other than Johnson as the (NHL) backup since he signed a 2 yr extension.

I think the Caps have two years to sign Varmalov, the CBA has additional language about "Major Juniors" and college players. I couldn't immediately find anything about how European players under contract are handled.

Tarik,
In a case like this - do you call GMGM (or anyone) to try for a quote or anything original? The Caps rarely provide something like that in their own press releases and that could add a lot to the blog. Thanks

Matt -- had no time. Had to rush up to Hershey.

Hey Tarik -- I used to work in Harrisburg.
As you've probably noticed there isn't much to do in Hershey unless you're into Applebees..
Instead, take the 10-minute drive to downtown H'Burg and check out Stocks on 2nd for a pretty good steak. Then head to Molly Branigan's for a Guiness. Lighten it up with a quick beer at Zembie's, and hear some truly horrible Karyoke (sp?). Then finish it off with a shot in the barber's chair at the Hardware Bar, and tell the ladies I said hello.
Have fun!

Good to see Neuvirth signed. He probably finishes his junior eligibility. Cassivi has one more year, then Max D will probably take the reigns as the hershey starter until Johnson's contract runs out and Max D is the backup there. Just my guess.
