Caps Sign Steckel to Extension (Updated)

We're back in business here at Caps Insider. Thanks for your patience over the past 27 hours.

Checking line center David Steckel has signed a one year contract for the 2009-10 season, the team just announced. Steckel was already under contract for the upcoming season, however, he would have been an unrestricted free agent July 1.

It's a minor move, for sure. But it speaks volumes about the Caps' confidence in Steckel, who figures to enter the season as the fourth line pivot behind Nicklas Backstrom, Sergei Fedorov and Michael Nylander.

I don't have the contract figures yet. But I'll update when I do.

Update:Steckel will earn $725,000 in 2009-10, up from $500,000 next season.

Apparently there are still bugs to be worked out.

Good to see we're keeping Stecks around for a bit longer.

The Chris Clark story today reminded me of how the ice at the phone booth is supposedly the worst in the league. This prompts three questions from me:

Has this been substantiated?
Does this increase/decrease home ice advantage?
Has GMGM tried done anything about it?

Also, just for S&G, would a more regular poster here provide a list of nicknames for whole roster?

94, Have you been hiding your cape?

Posted by: Super | August 6, 2008 4:28 PM | Report abuse

Filling in a name blank and adding a few:
Fehr = I've heard Fehrsie.
Kozlov = Ser (Haven't seen the movie it references, but its Russian)
Poti = I've heard Pots, too, which is too close to Poth for me.

I think adding the "ie" or "y" (with an "s" if necessary) is just custom. My older bro was Robsy when he played.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | August 6, 2008 4:28 PM | Report abuse

My friends and I have always called Kozlov "mother" as is mother russia. It seems strange but in a weird way it makes sense. I guess Kozzy works too.

That dude wears the cloak/cape on the metro. Been on the same car as him after a couple of games. Probably fun at parties to have the light thingies.

I read that Gordo's nickname with the team is actually "Muffins." The story is his slapshots were so weak in practice that Olie joked he was merely "tossin' muffins." Guess it stuck.

P.S. Brent Johnson's nickname should def be Big Johnson.

Posted by: Tex | August 6, 2008 4:53 PM | Report abuse

#94 isn't "SUPERCAPFAN", it just happens that they had the same # on their jersey last year.

Posted by: Super | August 6, 2008 4:58 PM | Report abuse

First of all #94, I think a nickname database is long overdue here.

However, I think we must include that Backstrom has become "Backie" which is how Ovie refers to him.

Also, good for Steckel. I wasn't a big fan of his headed into the year. I was higher on Gordo, but he really earned it. His teammates all love him and we have one of the best grinder lines in the league.

Interesting article on ESPN ranking the NHL coaches; here's what they said about BB (he was in the "the jury's still out" category):

"What a story. Finally gets his chance after years of coaching in the minors and wins the Jack Adams Award. But after the newness wears off, can he prove it was indicative of a difference-making touch?"

I like Steckel a great deal. A great draw man that has made Gordon (who is like half his size) largely expendable. If he could show some offensive upside (which I know isn't his role), he would be a keeper.

nicknames, what do they call Fedorov? Feds, probably, but how about "Sir", or "Team Dad" or something befitting a man of his, um, experience.

Hello All!

Speaking of GMGM, I actually had the audacity to mention him in the same paragraph with Ken Holland and Brian Burke from a previous thread and "Nomad" tethered a response.

Anyway, the tech issues kept me from es-pa-lainin so if anyone questioned my post, all I meant was that the Hollands and the Burkes would not stand for Clark, Pothier, and Nyls being out and costing 10M per birthday while our favorite GM did and prolly will again.

Moot point now I'm sure but hey, it gave me a reason to say Hiya to all of you and mention props for Stecks.

by the way to the person who asked before the blog shut down if Clarkie was American and where in NY he was. Yes he is American, he is from Connecticut. I'd assume he is in Potsdam NY working out at Clarkson University where he played. Just a guess since he is working out with another Clarkson alum, Conroy.

Tarik, good to see you back. One time Cap, Bryan Muir has signed with Dinamo Minsk of the KHL. It was reported on the news part of the NY Times Slapshot blog. Any chance you might add more non-Caps stuff and some commentary here. Would love to read your view of the Nashville debacle and Bettman's boy Boots and the loan to Boots from the Kings' owner who also happens to own the Kansas City facility.

If you didn't know, you can now buy club level seats for just the Caps (full season only) for $49.50 a seat. I bought a pair today because I didn't like the remaining selection in the lower level.

The club seats are not owned by the Capitals, and as such are not marketed on their website.

I have always been hacked off seeing the 200s empty during Caps games. I'm glad the arena is finally catering to hockey fans.

PS- Another bonus is guaranteed Frozen Four tickets.

Hey, I heard Backstrom is competing in Forsberg and Naslund's charity tournament this year, that they play to raise money for cancer.

He scored 3 assists (he's playing on a line with Forsberg) in a game last week. He assisted on 2 of Forsbergs 3 goals in an 11-4 win.

They recently played a similar collection of NHL Players from Finland and tied 5-5, but I couldn't a boxscore. Anyone one with better luck know how he did in that game?

Posted by: Colby | August 7, 2008 4:31 AM | Report abuse

Posted by: 828 | August 7, 2008 7:49 AM | Report abuse

Another smart deal to keep young secondary players who contribute well on the roster before their asking price gets too steep. I liked the Clark (OK, not young), Gordon, Fehr, and Flash signings keeping them with the Caps and away from free agency money. If the Caps need to trade someone, they can trade a player for a reasonable salary who has a couple years on a contract (not a rent-a-player). Last year they were able to trade Suds (who was not contributing) to LA for a decent pick (2nd) to stock up. The pick was used to move up in the draft. GMGM does a good job of dealing with the minor trades, picks, and signings that keep franchises moving forward -- not just the big signings that torpedo a team (see Glenn Slather with the NYR) in the long run. Oh, before folks lambast GMGM for the early signings of the ex-Pens, those were ownership calls.

Posted by: AM Capsfan | August 7, 2008 10:25 AM | Report abuse

In case you didn't know, the caps will be charging "Premium Pricing" for a few games this year. The opener, the 2 with Pit, the 2 with the Rangers, the detroit game, and a Buffallo game. What does that mean? it means that if you want to go to thoses games, insted of paying $50 for your seat, you will have to pay $65 even if you are a season ticket holder, you will still have to pay $65 if you want extra tickets for thoses games...

Posted by: R | August 7, 2008 10:52 AM | Report abuse

Got got season ticket holder's packet yesterday.

Can someone please explain to me the difference between "Pre-game ticket exchange" and "Post-game ticket exchange"?

Posted by: Danny | August 7, 2008 10:55 AM | Report abuse

Remember when you buy Club Seats you are supporting Abe Pollin. Abe is the reason we don't have better ice in the VC. He has said he will not invest in equipment to benefit the Caps. The one thing you can count on is the ice getting better as soon as Abe is out of the picture and the whole thing belongs to Ted's group.

Posted by: Bob | August 7, 2008 11:13 AM | Report abuse

Nothing wrong with Club Level Seats as long as the Capitals are on the ice...

Posted by: JSchon | August 7, 2008 11:17 AM | Report abuse

Abe is also the reason the food stinks at the VC. We've been to 10 of the other rinks and our food just sucks by comparison, but it is totally controlled by Abe. Personally I will do nothing that benefits Abe Pollin.

Posted by: Bob | August 7, 2008 11:19 AM | Report abuse

Although club level sales do not help the Caps' finances, a fuller house can help the team's spirit, enthusiasm, and performance.

Still, Ted should send someone to twist Abe's weak little arm to improve the ice condition to NHL quality. It'd be a shame to lose any of the Caps to more ruts in the ice.

Boo: your poll:
Definitely an A.
BB has the team intraining camp instead of jumping in cold, midseason.

Posted by: Joe B | August 7, 2008 11:26 AM | Report abuse

I got the season ticket package as well.

Notice the need to order additional game tickets at season ticket prices prior to Sept 12th.

Last year I could just call my rep, and get two more tickets to any game for my season ticket price for friends. That wont happen this year.

Posted by: SA-Town | August 7, 2008 11:26 AM | Report abuse

anybody else think that the Kings are kicking themselves for letting Stecks go? How could a team that is so horrible not have used a player like Stecks. He wouldn't turn the team around, but he's certainly better than some guys on that roster.

Posted by: reekie | August 7, 2008 11:33 AM | Report abuse

twisting arms won't work. In case you have not been following the whole Ted/Abe saga, they are not on the best of terms. I doubt either would spit on the other if they were on fire. The whole thing went sour during the MJ debacle and I don't believe they talk anymore. I think Ted is just waiting for Abe to die so that he can own they whole thing.

Posted by: Bob | August 7, 2008 11:42 AM | Report abuse

I can't believe that they are selling club level seats ... they have always been off-limits to the likes of us! :-) They are coveted - surely they would cost more than that?!?

Danny:
Pre means that you exchange before the game that you miss and post means that you exchange after that game ... I think! :-) I wondered the same thing when I first read it.

SA-Town:
I think you can still get extra tickets during the season - this is just priority tickets (before they go on sale to the general public).

Boo!

"I think you can still get extra tickets during the season - this is just priority tickets (before they go on sale to the general public)."

Yeah, you can buy extra tickets throughout the season at a discounted rate. I'm not sure if there's a limited number of seats available at the discounted rate, they might only have X amount per game.

/btw it's The Donald not the Don for Brashear.

Posted by: Yosh | August 7, 2008 12:29 PM | Report abuse

Yosh:
Last season I bought a lot of extra tickets (including multiples to single games), so unless something has changed, I doubt there is a limit.

Posted by: Boo! | August 7, 2008 12:37 PM | Report abuse

I hope they didn't do away with the STH discount throughout the year, because I am constantly buying tickets for Fam & Friends when they are in town, and I wont know of all the dates by September 12th.

Posted by: Super | August 7, 2008 12:46 PM | Report abuse

Super:
I don't think they are. They've changed enough (ex: premium game pricing); much more and the STHs will revolt! :-)

Posted by: Boo! | August 7, 2008 12:57 PM | Report abuse

The STH order form states that after 9/12 tickets will be at the gate price. Extra tickets for the 7 "premium" games are not discounted, even for STH's.

If you are a full season ticket holder and you look to exchange your ticket at least 48 hours before the game then you can choose from the "Pre-game" exchange list. If you miss a game, then you have to exchange the ticket within 2 weeks of that game for one of the "Post-game" exchange games.

Posted by: Mark | August 7, 2008 1:10 PM | Report abuse

Just a thought- wouldn't signing stecks to another year make him a more lucrative trade option for other teams? Again, just a thought.

Posted by: oo7 | August 7, 2008 1:16 PM | Report abuse

Mark:
Here is where the confusion is ...

While the priority order form says, "After the September 12th deadline all orders will be processed at gate rates," the STH benefits summary (from this year's renewal package) says, "Full season ticket holders can purchase additional tickets throughout the season at the full season ticket holder discounted price."

Hmm ... a little confusing. I will see if I can get clarification.

Posted by: Boo! | August 7, 2008 1:19 PM | Report abuse

Well I will be disapointed if I am unable to buy extra tickets at the discounted rate later in the year. That was one benefit I was looking forward to, as I always try to organize a family trip to a game at some point and take my brothers, or paretns or something

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | August 7, 2008 1:25 PM | Report abuse

Thanks Boo, I didn't see that. Let us know what the rep says about that conflicted wording. It will be a relief if there are other opportunties to get the discounted tickets.

Posted by: Mark | August 7, 2008 1:34 PM | Report abuse

Sombrero:
I hear ya! I literally can't tell you how many extra tickets I bought last season. If I tried to pin all of those people down on dates before 9/12, they would look at me like ... well ... you know! ;-) Hopefully it is nothing more than a poorly worded form (especially since the benefits doc says otherwise). I will check it out - stay tuned! :-)

@oo7

It would probably if you expect Steckel to somehow play well enough to become a 1st or 2nd line C, however, even if he improves his offensive numbers this year, it still wouldn't warrant a substantial raise.

Posted by: JSchon | August 7, 2008 1:54 PM | Report abuse

I understand people being upset about not being able to get discounted seats but isn't this really exciting. I mean, they are changing these rules because of the demand. I don't know about you, but I look at my season tickets as an investment.

I got tickets because they have been in my family for 30 years but I thought that they would be a sound investment. I go to 38 to 40 games but would it be great that if you couldnt make it to a a WED game against Florida, you could sell them for face value!!

Posted by: #94 | August 7, 2008 2:24 PM | Report abuse

@STH.....when you have a bad team they will do anything to sell tickets, but with the team having success now, like it or not, the team does not have to discount as much or as often. Econ 101, supply and demand, the supply has not changed, but after the way the teamed closed out last season, ticket demand will be much higer. The price of watching a good team that has to pay it's players.

@Tarik and/or Katie

Any chance you guys could confirm which Caps players are waiver exempt? I'm thinking Backstrom, Alzner, Fehr, Schultz are all waiver exempt. Not sure abotu Flash. Some of those guys may only be waiver exempt for part of the season, until they hit a certain number of career games, and obviously the thought of Backstrom getting sent down is laughable but I didn't want to leave anybody off.

All I can say is, while I prefer sold out games, if tickets are available then STHs should be able to get them at the STH price throughout the season. The 08/09 renewal package listed that as a benefit, so they should honor it ... at least for this season. Hopefully we'll find out tomorrow that that's their intention.

Here is the link for the Acela Club Level seats. The contact information is there.

http://www.verizoncenter.com/tickets/club_seating.shtml

I just signed a contract for seats in 213 at $49.50 per.

I hate Pollin like the rest of you, but essentially had to choose between a defensive zone LL end weekend plan for $3100 and a full season, offensive zone endline package for $4100. Thats two seats to 22 games for an extra $1000, not to mention priority ticketing for other VC events. Note that not all Capitals ticket holder benefits are offered by the "Acela Club," and vice versa.

I would prefer my money go to Ted, but ultimately I'm just happy to be in the building and able to cheer. I also like the food better on the club level.

Sombrero,
I'm not Katie or Tarik, but this is what I've heard and figured out:
Fehr is not, according to Vogel, because he is now on a second NHL contract. I think he was 20 according to "NHL age" when he signed his entry deal, so he only had 3 seasons.
Alzner is because he just signed this year and hasn't played a single game yet.
Backstrom is because he's only played a single full season. Although, I believe his exemption runs out later in the season (71 games in)
Schultz has about half the season for exemption (48 games)
Flash I'm not 100% on, but I'm thinking he is non-exempt as of the end of last season. (He had a 3-season exemption)
All the guys with Caps' contracts up in Hershey are exempt (Lepisto, Bourque(?) and a few (?) more)

Sundin considers retirement:

YAWN ... I'm bored ... what else is going on?!? ;-)

That was awesome. Bradley makes me smile.

Not a problem! I love doing obscure research, especially on my favorite subject!
Boo! Ummm, Brett Favre is now a Jet? No idea. How about Sundin join him. Cheerfully disrespecting, they can start a retirement home in New Jersey. That's it! He should sign with the Devils. They need some sort of anything or their fans will die of boredom. Or the Kings, I hear they have plenty of cap space, they can sign him to a 1-year, 20-mil deal. (Sorry, Jordan! :-D) Take that, Canucks! Your 2-year 20 mil has been seen and raised.
September is completely too far away.

Thanks, JMU, but I'm still bored!! ;-) All the coverage about Brett was (yawn) exciting. Can you tell that I don't give a hoot about baseball? (Kidding!! Actually, I can't stand baseball, but I'm not a huge football fan, either.) So you are right, September is too far away, but it least it is finally "next month". Anyway, thanks for trying to break-up the boredom ... maybe I need to start really using those golf clubs of mine?!?

October is too far away (cooler weather, hockey that counts, ski trips getting closer), but at least college football is right around the corner -- GO HOKIES!!!

Steckel is definately a team player..he could have waited it out and taken a bigger contract but he knows we are close
Steckel and Gordon are our Miller and Ridley combo -- they have killed penalties for the Bears and Caps in some of the most trying times for us

and I agree with Bradley put him with Ovie -- Bradley is the fastest and most energized player out there at times -- him buzzing around would create room for Ovie -- it would be interesting

Matt Bradley makes me smile too! Love how he has such a good sense of humor about himself. I also like the idea of goalies being blindfolded on shootouts. However, as we saw some last season, sight does not always help goalies in shootouts.

I actually do really like football (actually college more than professional now - GO HOKIES). But the whole Brett Favre soap opera was a mess. One thing I can say is that I am glad I do not work at EA Sports. Just when they thought they had a "curse" free pick for a cover, wham.

So which country is going to win the Olympics? (There's no hockey in the summer Olympics, is there?!? ;-))

Posted by: Boo! | August 8, 2008 9:32 AM | Report abuse

Team USA usually owns the summer Olympics. Honestly, I get kind of patriotic for the games.

Posted by: JSchon | August 8, 2008 10:11 AM | Report abuse

There's field hockey. The goalies' pads are almost as big :)
