Caps take control in second period, 4-0

The Capitals broke open the game in the second period with four goals, chasing Montreal starting goalie Jaroslav Halak after the first three.

The flurry began with a short-handed goal from center Boyd Gordon, who was re-inserted into the lineup for Game 3 in place of David Steckel, roughly a minute into the period. With Mike Knuble skating to his left, Gordon carried the puck deep into the zone and flipped a shot at Halak, who was unable to control the rebound, allowing Gordon and Knuble both to poke at the loose puck before Gordon was credited with the goal.

Then a few minutes later, Brooks Laich scored when his shot from distance sailed into the net with Eric Fehr screening Halak. Fehr had planted himself in front of the crease to Halak's left, and as Laich's shot was coming through, Fehr watched the puck go between his legs, then turned around and celebrated as the red lamp flashed.

Fehr made it 3-0 when he poked in a rebound off Halak, and Canadiens Coach Jacques Martin pulled him in favor of Carey Price.

Price made a couple of early saves, but the Capitals kept applying pressure, and Alex Ovechkin converted while falling to knees on an assist from Nicklas Backstrom for a 4-0 advantage. It was Ovechkin's second goal of the series.

Join me for a postgame chat right after the final whistle.

Please boys... you're playing great, DON'T STOP. Let's get of the PP snide too if we could please.

Posted by: natresgroup | April 19, 2010 8:47 PM | Report abuse

WTF??? Where has this been the first two games? If they keep this up, they won't lose again. Outstanding game by the Caps so far. I still would love to see Walker play. "Free Walker!"

Posted by: robostop10 | April 19, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Seriously - Caps looked great during the 2nd period. definitely out-muscling the Habs. If they can keep up their discipline in the third, we're looking good.

Posted by: snappytommy1 | April 19, 2010 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Great period, now let's get the PP going!

Posted by: timmyv38 | April 19, 2010 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Of course I'm very happy but the PP has got to snap out of its funk. It's way too talented and we have way too many weapons to be 0% effective through 3 games. Plekanec is just a moron. The crowd was so into it and singing songs and doing chants earlier.. what happened? ;) hehe

Posted by: rachel216 | April 19, 2010 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Montreal has lost their edge so they aren't as aggressive on the PK. That has allowed us to finally work the puck around and get some zone time.

We need to find a way to get our PP going in a tighter game when Montreal's PK has more jump. They've been totally stifling us throughout this series.

Fortunately, we're getting it done at even strength or we'd be in serious trouble.

What the hell were they doing for the first half of that 4 minute power play?

WTF INTERVIEW!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 19, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse

This is how the Caps were playing 3rd period last game - crashing the net, screening the goalie, drawing penalties. They need to keep this style to get far in the playoffs.

Posted by: timmyv38 | April 19, 2010 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Caps outscoring them 9-1 since being down 4-1 in the last 3+ periods. Wow!

Let's go Caps! Finish them off!

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 19, 2010 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Great PK, great 5v5, great forecheck (finally), skating the puck down the middle -- love all of this. But the PP??? Where did it go?

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | April 19, 2010 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Bruce did an awesome job with these new line mixes.

We just need to get this PP monkey off the back now. We certainly got the defensive one off.

wtf has been awesome!! He has a knack for hugeeeeee goals! go Fehr!

I love watching the Canadiens try to get us to engage in fights and how they're losing their cool. It's hilarious. Now let's score on the PP please. ;)

Fehr has been playing well throughout this series. He's been one of our most consistent players.

He's actually been bringing it since right after the Olympic break.

Poti is leading all skaters with a +3.

4-0 not sufficiently decisive - stomp them down some more so they know who is boss up there in France - not to be inhumane, but this is a hockey game - if we don't, they might end up thinking they have a chance

Posted by: Satchelass | April 19, 2010 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Totally agree wocoliz!! No OT this time and no freaking out!

Posted by: rachel216 | April 19, 2010 8:57 PM | Report abuse

including the ending of last game, this team has played 60 CONTINUOUS minutes of President's Trophy hockey. Lets hope it continues for another 140 minutes. If the Caps can do that, there's absolutely NO WAY this series lasts past Friday night.

Posted by: kman2 | April 19, 2010 8:57 PM | Report abuse

It's a pretty simple recipe for this team.

If they are committed, defensively, they look like a contender.

When they are playing soft and passively and the forwards are helping out, they look like a pretender.

Varlamov has been stellar but he doesn't need to be this good every game if the defense plays with the kind of focus and effort they displayed throughout most of the first 2 periods.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 19, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Varly, and the defense, made all the difference. They kept the Habs scoreless in the first period until our boys found their offensive rhythm. THANK GOD that Varly miraculously returned to his pre-injury form. I hope he keeps it up. Montreal is getting frustrated and increasingly desperate. Oh please keep it up Montreal.

By the way, I couldn't tell whom the Canadians were booing at: the Caps, the referees or their own team?

Posted by: caraveli | April 19, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse

It would be nice to get Green on track, starting with this power play. He just seems lost out there, they have to figure something out with him and the playoffs. Let's get him and the PP jump started together.

call me crazy, but a part of me was happy MTL scored there. kinda brings us back to reality, and increases our intensity a little bit instead of laying back and spending 20 minutes playing keep-away. now our D actually has to play.

That penalty was because Green again turned the puck over by not getting it out of the zone. I don't know what his deal is, but if anyone else played like that on the back line, he'd be scratched.

Boyd Gordon is trying to TAKE Stecks's job.

He has a SH goal, he is 9 of 10 on faceoffs, and has been great on the PK (defensively, lol that i have to say that).

anyone feel as if this game is under control and in the bag? Caps are now playing tentative and gettin beaten to the puck.

Posted by: Satchelass | April 19, 2010 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Do the Caps think they are playing half-court? The puck has been almost exclusively in the Caps' defensive zone.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | April 19, 2010 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Gordo is looking great tonight. He should get more time with the way he keeps stepping up - and I was one who was always calling for Gordon to be sat before. I could see him and Steckel on a line together being stifling. Or next year, maybe have the centers be Backs, Belanger, Steckel, Gordon?

Posted by: timmyv38 | April 19, 2010 9:20 PM | Report abuse

The Habs could have been embarrassed in the 3rd, but they are setting themselves up for a strong game 4. The Caps are letting the Habs skate too free in the neutral zone, carrying speed into the zone -- weak.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | April 19, 2010 9:20 PM | Report abuse

Like to see the Caps finish strong so they have a sense of momentum and domination going into Game 4. Can't let Montreal start feeling good about itself after the players were down and out in the second.

Posted by: jdove80 | April 19, 2010 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: timmyv38 | April 19, 2010 9:22 PM | Report abuse

That 3 horrible penalties in a row.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 19, 2010 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Now this is pretty -- shots, cycling, running over the little Habs, puck possession in the zone. And a call against the Caps here is weak. OV had a defender on his back

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 19, 2010 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Not sure the Caps could've come out in a worse mental state and played worse a period than they're doing right now. It's almost like they want Montreal to get back into this thing. But refs missed a roughing call against Cam on Backstrom.

Gordon and Fehr were the two best forwards tonight. Gordon was great on the PK, 5 on 5, on faceoffs... best game I've seen from him. If Fehr keeps the crease presence that he had tonight, goals will result. I would love to see him with Semin - maybe that can get Semin some goals.

And, to those who were so critical today of McPhee, BB and the players:

Consider yourselves members of the Elite Doofus platoon, Special Operations.

Or, Special ED as you are commonly referred to.

Gordo was great, as Timmy V notes. I would like to see him be more physical, but TMac makes the point about his back injury. Flash, I don't know. Maybe he should be the next one to sit.

@tominfl1

We have a candidate for the newly formed DB....floms for his comment on Semin.

----------------------------------

Look, I've always been on the fense with Semin because of his style of play in the playoffs.

He could be useful IMO against the Pens, or Redwings in the playoffs, but other teams play a more physical style that he shy's away from.

So maybe he's worth it to use against the Pens, but that's an expensive weapon to keep around for 1 series.

awesome effort by cap forwards except flash and semin who is goaless in his last 9 plaayoff games

you act like he's never scored any big goals!!
Give it a break.

Every1 on this team has contributed to something worthwhile.
It's called value added.

get out of the fox hole AmeriCAN'T.

But they have great life & careers! What's your excuse?

Well, how many series do we give SEMIN and GREEN before we conclude one way or another if they're added value come playoff time or wasted cap space?

Nothing wrong with opinions.
Opinions without any basis is just plain hooliganism.
Begets said response.
Acquire some skin or is your lack of any skating knowledge evident with every post?

Good game. Much better game for the Caps than we've seen lately.

Who would have thought the Caps would score more goals short-handed than on the Power Play?

Semin's been shooting -- just not getting it in the net. Seems it's been close but no cigar.

I liked. Well done Rocc00.
SSonner or later Semin will be himself.

To anyone out there, I noticed that this year EVERY series, east and west, started with a 1-1 split. Anybody know when was the last time that happened???
