Caps Take the Day Off in Florida

Just heard from Tarik in sunny Ft. Lauderdale, where it's a pretty low-key day for the Caps. Coach Bruce Boudreau held a five-minute team meeting to tell his players to rest up for tomorrow night's game (and the playoffs, which will most likely start on either Wednesday or Thursday at Verizon Center).

A few notes on tomorrow's game against the Panthers: Jose Theodore will get the start in net, while Donald Brashear (knee) and Tom Poti (groin) are questionable. Boyd Gordon is still recovering from a broken finger and there's no timetable on his return.

Good for them.

Just PLEASE for the love of all that is holy, don't let any of the Caps fall asleep on the beach. The idea of someone playing with a sunburn ... owwww.

Time flies when you are one of the top in your Conference. Didn't last season (and the seasons before that) go by so much slower?

Only thing left to do now, until the POs start, is get Ovi the Art Ross and 60 goals. Here are my suggested forward line combos:

Ovi - Backs - Kozlov
Ovi - Feds - Semin
Ovi - Nyls - Flash
Ovi - Aucoin - Fehr
Ovi - Stecks - Brads
Ovi - Laich - Semin

OK, most of you probably know this, but, for those that don't, the NHL re-seeds after every round. That way the highest Conference seed plays the lowest conference seed, every round. The NHL was smart in that respect, not like the NBA with brackets built in the first round that aren't dismantled and rebuilt after every round.

The playoffs will be exciting as heck this season. The Caps will make a nice run. Unlike Caps team of the past, they didn't do this with smoke and mirrors. They have managed to get 108, and possibly 110 points in a season that they went through major injury issues. I know a lot of teams went through them too, but they didn't end up as successful. Not only do I see Stanley Cups in the future for this team, I see some President's trophy presenations too.

Kind of nice to see our boys cake walk to through a 7-1-2 stretch. LET'S GO CAPS!!!

I'll pass on the line with Ovi and Semin together. LOVE them but eh, I don't want them to irk the more seasoned Capital fans who seem to track their success rate a lot better than I do. From what I've seen and heard, that line hasn't done too well.

Personally, I'd rather they did an hour workout today. I don't see any harm in it. *shrug* Enjoy your day off, Caps! Let's rock it tomorrow!

Okay, since we need a discussion apparently, I'll throw this one out there.

What's your favorite personal Caps-related moment of the season? It shouldn't be directly related to the team's play, but cna be almost anything else - think viewing parties, trash talking with other fans, watching a particular event, something else. For example, here's mine:

I went to the Club Scarlett viewing party down at Front Page on Tuesday with a friend of mine. My best memory has got to be clowning around with Slapshot during the open skate and on the trip to Front Page afterwards.

If you've never interacted with Slapshot one-on-one, he is FUNNY. He accidentally knocked me down during the open skate, then helped me up and there were jokes about "two minutes for interference". (The bird did not go to the penalty box.) Then several of us hooked up (accidentally) with him on the elevator ride down to street level, where he clowned with everyone else in the elevator and threatened to push all the buttons. (There's like 10 floors.) He's very good at making his intentions clear although he never speaks.

A walk through Ballston Common Mall and a jaywalking spree in which we ducked through the wires on the median strip later, we found the Front Page, and lost track of him shortly thereafter, but man was that a good laugh and a lot of fun. Slapshot is awesome, he really is.

I think my personal favorite was Karl Alzner at the STH holder at six flags. He alternated between kid-in-a-candy-store look and completely bewildered. I said something and he replied "I can't believe all these people want my autograph!" I was charmed from that moment on.

Although, running into George McPhee in a bar last weekend? completly awesome.

@kittypawz,

I only went to two Caps games this year, which is a small pool of experience to draw a favorite moment from. Instead, let me think back to when I was a younger man. My folks had season tickets from 1974 until 1987, when too many years of frustration caught up to them. I went to many games during that time. One of my favorite moments that still warms my heart to this day occurred with my father at a Flyers game.

We dealt with many years of the Flyers coming to the Cap Centre and beating us regularly. Worse, their ignorant fans (is the redundant when it comes to Philly fans?) would dominate the arena, cheering on the likes of Rick Tochett, Dave Brown, and Tim Kerr. It made you want to spit.

Well, this was the early 80’s and the Caps had finally turned the corner. Towards the end of a game against the Flyers the Caps were ahead by a couple goals. The stands were now packed with Caps fans and we all were screaming, “Flyers suck! Flyers suck!”

What more could a 12 year old boy want.

Go Caps! Flyers suck! So does Cindy!

kittypawz understand that for me the season has mostly consisted of going to work, immediately to bed, wake up at 1am to watch game, work, bed , repeat. But I think the circumstances made this my most memorable season. Really fun were the post game chats with my dad riding the U-Bahn
to work.

My best tangible experience? Meeting the traffic guards at RBC center for the Canes game a few weeks back.

My Brother: Where can we pay?
Guard: Well sir, you can pay me if you like and save some trouble up ahead. Where y'all coming from?
Me: DC Area by hometown, Germany and south carolina by residence.
Guard: Well i am very impressed you folks came so from so far away to support your team and I hope you have a good time tonight, but you're in Hurricane Country now boys so buckle up and be ready for the storm.

RedBirdie: Doc and Kevin took calls at 1:56 (show ends at 2:00) on who the fans would like, the Rangers or the Canadiens. Kevin said "according to the experts, both teams are a good match up for the Caps." It'd be best if the Pens could move up to the 5 spot to play the Flyers so one would get knocked out. Not much insight.

oh, another fuzzy moment from this season! My husband is a life-long Red Wings fan (although he now own 2 Caps t-shirts. I'm slowly converting him. pray for his eternal hockey soul!) I'm a Caps lifer. We were watching a Wings game and they announced that with a win, the Wings would win their EIGHTH STRAIGHT division title.

Me: Eight?! Jeez, I can't imagine winning eight in a row.

Him: Really? You'd better get used to the idea.

Me: Why? (I'm a little oblivious sometimes....)

Him: Um, hello! Haven't you been watching the Caps? If they don't win eight straight, I'll be surprised.

As with most other questions regarding how professional sports are run, the answer as to why the NBA doesn't re-seed after each round has to do with TV and, ultimately, money. The problem with re-seeding after each round, from the NBA's standpoint, is that you would have to wait until each series in a particular round is over before you could start any series in the next round. This is, of course, because you can't re-seed and start the next round until you know who all the surviving teams are. Therefore, if only one series in a particular round goes the limit, you've got ESPN or TNT showing games, and the other sitting around, twiddling its corporate thumbs, and scrambling to fill air time that it thought would be filled with playoff basketball. So much for TNT's advertizing "30 games in 30 days," or 60 in 60 or whatever the heck it is.

As a fan, I would love to see the NBA re-seed, as I think it tends to keep the higher-seeded, and therefore (usually) better teams in the playoffs longer. But it ain't gonna happen.

Hey fanohock1: don't let the exceptional Caps teams of the mid to late 80's read your mention of smoke and mirrors. I'm not sure if you were around then but I don't know a Caps team that had more heart than when Scott Stevens, Rod Langway, Mike Gartner, Kelly Miller and others were playing. Remember something else, when we were in the Patrick Division the competition was much superior to what the Caps are playing now. Look at some of the history.

Here is one more thing to consider. Do you think the Caps would have the same record if they had to play the Flyers, Rangers, Pens and Devils 7 times. Come on let's be real. This is a really good team but it is not as balanced as you think. It is top heavy at #8.

@trunkenmath: Trashtalking with locals is so much fun when they're nice about it. I went up to Ottawa for the 1/20 game this year, and I got good-natured crap at the Canadian border for the Caps jersey.

"Well, I don't know if I should let you in wearing that...."
"Why not? Are you afraid of us?"
*laughter*

I had a good time at RBC too. Great people down there - just wish the Caps showed up like the fans did.

@Kittypawz
To be frank that was my first NHL away game ever and I had no idea what to expect. I spent christmas holiday in Sweden with a group of hooligans following Brynäs IF around. Every arena we were searched for weapons and had to stay in a special fenced in concourse. The hatred between fans even led to fights and arrests.

So my brother and I geared up for the game expecting the worst but instead were treated to a delicious BBQ with the boosters and then lots of beer in the back of a pickup truck with some locals.

Not to answer for another poster, but the reseeding is determined by the original seeding. The highest remaining seed in the second round is number one, the second highest is number two, and so forth.

So, for example, if Montreal beats Boston in the first round, they move into the second round as the four seed, since they'd be the lowest remaining seed in the East.

In the second round, 1 plays 4, 2 plays 3.

-----

@fanohock1: How are the re-seeds determined? By standings points again or by some other measure?

I went to a couple Canes games when they played in Greensboro. I was at VaTech, so it was closer to Greensboring than DC and tickets were readily available. The fans had no clue about hockey, mostly cheered for fights and hits. Everybody was in the top sections with cheaper tickets, so in the 2nd perdiod people were invited down so the tv coeverage showed people in the stands. Glad to see that Raleigh is much better.

too much to catch up on, but i saw that some one mentioned needing a blog 12 step program. I wrote this not long ago, but figured people would take it the wrong way. In the spirit of the atl jumbotron incident, I offer this list as a jest. If you take it too seriously, don't tell me about it, and if it changes your life for the better I'll be taking full credit for that ; )

12 step program for capitals insider blog

step 1- take your hands off the keyboard.
step 2- turn off and step away from the computer.
step 3- don't dilly dally. get out of the chair. go to the kitchen.
step 4- see if wife/husband/kids/girlfriend/boyfriend* wants to spend some time with you.
step 5- If not, talk wife/husband/kids/girlfriend/boyfriend into doing something. Tell them you'll do anything they want. say yes to first thing**.
Step 6- celebrate something you do rather than what other people are doing. If no one can think of anything, or teens are involved, marginally of course, suggest bowling backwards and through the legs. Winner chooses dinner (set a price, stupid).
step 7- don't check capitals insider blog before you go.
step 8- while watching your happy wife/husband/kids/girlfriend/boyfriend at your created event, contemplate spending your time in anticipation of finding out what others are doing with their time.
step 9- Ignore all the people around you who are suddenly wearing Caps clothing. Don't make comments to any of them.***
step 10- Think about your wife/husband/kids/girlfriend/boyfriend, not the price difference between bowl america and verizon center.
step 11- Play ass much as they want and then take the wife/husband/kids/girlfriend/boyfriend home. get ice cream on the way. tell them what a great time you had, and if it ain't bedtime, keep hanging out...
step 12- ...Do Not check capitals insider blog as soon as you get home.****

* if you have none of these, you're problems are deeper and won't be resolved in this post.
** as long as the first thing isn't for you to go away.
***you should have been told before not to wear any Caps gear when you went out, but it was assumed you knew that, so if you are wearing Caps gear turn it inside out. Come on, you should have figured that out. Put in some effort. Its those things that make your wife/husband/kids/girlfriend/boyfriend hate you. wtf?
**** don't do it later, either.

I always check Caps insider before I go out. :) It's important.

@ trunkenmath
@ Boo-

Ich spreche Deutsch schon etwas laenger als 10 Monate - vielleicht kann ich ja beim Deutschsprechen ein klein wenig behilflich sein ;-) ... mein Englisch ist hingegen nicht so gut :-(

I'm a caps fan since the days of Oli the Goalie - he was the goalie of the German national team and he had a fantastic year during the Caps run to the finals ... Hopefully Jose will have at least the same success this year ...

... and I agree with AleksanderOMunchkin:
Pick your poison.
The Caps have to win and they will but it want be easy regardless whether Habs or Rags ... hopefully the refs are not too one-sided

Scene at a recent Bears game...

It's intermission and I get my BlackBerry out of my purse.
Friend: Who are you calling?
Me: No one. Just checking Tarik's blog.
Friend: You know you're addicted, don't you?
Me: Yea, I know.

?? i don't know how to translate 'rusty' from german to english :)

Tess: I'd say I'm addicted to this blog as well. It's the first place I check when I get on my computer and lately there's nothing to do cause it's spring break. In my web page development class, I'm in the very back of the classroom so I sometimes go on Caps insider. Hehe. :)

i had to do the same thing last month when i was in Belize on vacation - my wife just rolled her eyes everytime i spent a half hour or so just trying to connect to the internet with her PDA. lucky i was able to claim that it was my vacation too and i could do what i wanted - so i didn't get in trouble but was questioned/drilled on what is so important about the capitals - that's when i rolled my eyes - some people just don't get it - do they?

WOW!! Your English is GREAT, but you are welcome to speak to me in German anytime!! :-) (It is easier for me to read than write.) Are you from Cologne or is that just your team? If the former, I have been to your fine city and had a lovely time. Prost!

Kirk:
That reads good enough! :-) But be nice to FCKoeln1, as I believe that German is his/her native tongue!

I have a question concerning the tradition of playoff beards ... What if one has a beard already? Just not shaving until the SC ? Or has he to shave the beard and start all over again ?

Posted by: FCKoeln1 | April 10, 2009 3:51 PM | Report abuse

Looks like we should all enjoy these last few days before the trolls start pouring in from whichever team we get to play in the playoffs.

Time flies when you are one of the top in your Conference. Didn't last season (and the seasons before that) go by so much slower?

I don't know about the time flying this year. Last year every game was so important that when the season ended I was amazed it went so quickly. This year it seams that the playoffs will never get here. I want the playoffs to start tonight.

My favorite personal Caps moments from this season:

1) Talking to Eric Fehr, I reminded him he met my kids in the Pro Shop at Kettler a few weeks earlier. He said, "Oh yeah, tell them I said hi." What an incredibly nice guy.

2) Taking Alzner's pic outside Kettler, he was looking directly into the sun. He said, "Oh wait, I have a trick for this." He performed his little trick, and his eyes are still closed in the picture.

3) Meeting Jay Beagle. He was so excited to have been called up he couldn't get the goofy grin off his face.

4) THE BEST: Watching Brash play bongos on Semi's head months after the big fight. Then Ovi and Backie started jumping around and making monkey sounds. I love the boy but he earned that one. Fortunately he takes it well.

Anyone in need of a hockey fix this weekend:
Bears play at Philly tonight at 7:00 (final hockey game ever at the Spectrum); then at home Sat. vs Philly and home Sun. vs Wilkes-Barre. Magic number to lock up 1st place is 3. Neuvy will be in goal tonight (Rachel will like that!)

@ Boo-:

This is no criticism, just some info you might find useful later: the German "ss" (ess-tset) letter can be found in your Windows Character Map (this is under Start-->Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools.

You can either copy-and paste it from the Character Map or simply type [Alt+0223] in just about any application, wnenever you need that particular letter = ß

Ausgezeichnet!

thank you very much!
Indeed, I was born in Cologne and 1. FC Köln is my (soccer) team - but I live in Bremen ...
(btw Bears are my NFL team (since I watched Gary Payton on TV) and the Mavericks are my NBA team (Dirk Nowitzky))

Capt_Kirk_in_AZ:
... well, it's 10.30 pm (ich werde nicht mehr allzu lange aufbleiben) ...

FAV caps moments this year:

December game against the Rangers, when we were down by 4 goals and Ovie got the scoring started on a lucky bounce, we ended up tying the score and taking the game to OT. ShaMo scored in OT for us. huge dog pile at the end of that game.. man was that a roller coaster of emotions. rags fans reaction=classic.

@jogabonito :

Yeah, Id have to say that ranked up there for me too...especially the wierd numerology: #26 scores (i think) career goal #26 on his 26th birthday...

Also nice was killing a 6-on 4 in the final minutes to beat the mighty Red Wings

To brag a little, I predicted before the season and reiterated many times Caps would win SE going away w/110 pts. Wish my stock market picks would have done so well, I'd not have lost over $100K.

Anyway, I also added I'd take my vacation 8th thru 14th to miss only last 2 meaningless games. That worked too. So, back from Arizona to Florida on Tuesday. Today was spent hiking up a 2000 ft peak. Beer was cold at the bottom.
