Caps to Host Flyers (Updated)

The Flyers just beat the Penguins 2-0 to clinch the sixth seed in the East and set up a first round meeting with the Caps. I'll pass along schedule details when they become available. Should be this evening.

This is will mark the fourth time the Caps and Flyers have met in the playoffs, and the first time since 1988-89. The Caps won two of the three previous meetings.

Update:The practice schedule this week is as follows. From the Caps:

The Washington Capitals will practice at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Monday, April 7, at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. The rest of the week the Capitals will practice at 10:30 a.m. on non-game days and hold morning skate at 10 a.m. on gamedays, all at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

I am a little worried about this series.... they are a physical team and our blue line is dinged up right now.

Hatred for Philly...building.

I'm not worried at all. Biron is going to get lit up the whole series. Brashear will make sure the Flyers stay in line. Bring them on!!

Pittsburgh mailed it in w/the conference championship within reach. Talk about controlling your own destiny! What a franchise!

I think we can beat Biron despite his good play lately. I know the Caps understand the Flyers will look to injure Ovie in the first period of the first game. We need to continue to be tough. Let the playoffs begin! GO CAPS!

Are your playoff seats the same as your normal season tickets? I ended up with better seats for the playoffs, pure bonus. I have to admit, it doesn't matter the sport, Philly fans are a-holes.

Posted by: Steve R | April 6, 2008 5:47 PM | Report abuse

Oh, how I loathe the Flyers and their fans. I hope very few of their fans are in our house for Games 1 and 2, but I just know they will find a way to get their greasy little paws on our tickets. Let's just hope our boys can shut down the Broad Street Thugs.

Posted by: Jill | April 6, 2008 5:49 PM | Report abuse

well i was really hoping for ottawa, but after watching the egg each of those teams laid today, i'm feeling reasonably confident. should be a good series, but i'd venture caps in 6. and then we'll be on to pittsburgh (assuming they beat ottawa). huge series if we can get past the thugs in philly.

Ottawa would probably be a better opponent since they basically backed their way into the playoffs, but we're in no position to be picky. We're just glad to be in.

Funny thing is that the Flyers are a team I probably have the most negative feelings towards. They will definitely play dirty and try to injure Ovie, Semin and Backstrom. Should be a good test for the youngsters. I am, however, concerned that all of a sudden 2 of our D went down with injuries and we might be facing the Flyers with Eminger and Lepisto both in the line-up. I like both of them though, but Morrison and Schultz are more experienced and bigger.

Still euphoric about getting in. Could not watch the game live last night, so just saw it this morning (not knowing the result on purpose). Very excited. What a Cinderella story!

Posted by: ranndino | April 6, 2008 5:58 PM | Report abuse

I'm not that optimistic. I fear the Flyers will hurt some of our boys early in the series. We better be very careful.

Posted by: mauree | April 6, 2008 5:58 PM | Report abuse

Penguins layed down for this one. They did not want to face the Flyers in the first round. It was obvious, Beech, Dupois, etc, on the power play. They wanted to play the Senators in the first round. The Flyers have a pretty solid team from 1st line to fourth line. I hope it is a sea of red, I don't want to see any Flyer fans at the game.

LETS GO CAPS. I know I'm the minority but I didn't fee the Pens "laid down" today. Biron and Fleury each played super and it wasn't till late in the game the Flyers got a lead. Also, though I'm biased, I don't feel these Flyers play "dirty" physical yes, dirty no. In any case the Caps are big boys as has been noted and can take care of themselves. If they keep playing like they have been, basically since December 1 and especially since March 1 they'll take Philly in 5 or 6 games. The state of injuries on D is concerning though. LETS GO CAPS!!!!

Posted by: Mark aka Usually Frustrated Caps Fan | April 6, 2008 6:16 PM | Report abuse

I'm not worry about size but by dirty hits - going for the knees, the head. Hopefully I'm just paranoid - but the Pens vs Philly game before this one, the one that counted for a playoff spot, was scary as hell.

Any news on the status of our injured D-men, Mo and Schultz? That's my main concern right now.

Posted by: ranndino | April 6, 2008 6:19 PM | Report abuse

I am just wondering about the ruling last night after the Florida goal. I looked around and it was never addressed online by anyone.

If Florida scored prior to the goal, why did they still get the power play?

With Morrisonn, Schultz and Pothier hurt, the Caps are going to have much to overcome, which will make victory over the Flyers even sweeter.

I remember the Dale Hunter goal like it was yesterday. I encourage anyone with doubts abouth playing the Flyers to watch it and remember. It's one of the greatest goals in Caps history, IMHO.

BTW, What a crime it was bulldozing that building to the ground to make way for a Best Buy and a Sizzlers!

While some may say not to break up what has been working (i.e., don't make lineup changes during a winning streak), I think it is a good idea for Clark to get back in when he is ready. Do you all agree? I mean, you can look at it as we had a "regular" season winning streak, but the playoffs are totally different. Especially against a physical team like Philly.

What say you all?

That's why we have Brashear. A player is also not going to do something so stupid in the playoffs that would hurt his team's chances of advancing. Pre-season, even regular season is one thing, but the playoffs...

Thanks so much for the YouTube link. Brought back a lot of memories of going to the Cap Center from 1980 to 1990. 18,130 screaming fans ! Stevens, Langway, Gustafson, Peeters, Gartner was my hero, etc. Awesome !

I am so onboard with this team, too ! I love the Russians - Ovie, Semin & the Fedorov move was pure genius. Throw in Backstrom & Fleischmann and you have a whole lot of skill. Some good grit too. As everyone has already said, the D is a point of concern. And, I really want to see Olie in net for game 1. He deserves the start.

I live in the Bay Area now and have Center Ice & HD, so I've seen a ton of games and I am so looking forward to seeing us blast Philly !

Let's go Caps & Let's go Sharks.

Welcome to! This site is dedicated to the inability of a Philadelphia sports team to win ONE championship in over 24 years. At this website, we only care about the four major sports teams in the city. I don't care that the Wings, Phantoms, Kixx, Barrage or any other team won some sort of championship. In the world of sports, only the four major leagues really matter. If you don't like it, go complain somewhere else.

Hey guys, it's been so long I can't remember. When do Game 5 tickets go on sale? Will they place them on sale even before a Game 5 becomes necessary or will they wait until it's clear there is going to be one?

(of course I hope we sweep the Flyers, but one can never be too prepared)

I forgot, who was the first who suggested hip, hip, hu-et? 828?

"Cristobal Huet drew chants of "hip, hip, hu-et" from the home crowd as he made 25 saves in the win. Since joining the team at the trade deadline, Huet has looked nearly unbeatable, winning his last nine games, with a goals-against average of 1.52 over that span. He'll most likely re-sign with the team for next season and should be a solid pick in fantasy drafts next year."

Posted by: King Huet | April 6, 2008 7:13 PM | Report abuse

@ Capsfan

the penalty was called right before the goal was scored. I was watching the INHD telecast and you could see on the replay the low offical puting his arm up before the shot was taken, I beleive it happened more twards the blue line.

Since there was already a player in the box, it works just as if there were two players in the box. The penalty with the least amount of time left is let out while the penalty with the most time (in this case the delayed call) stays in the box.

@ CT Caps Fan

I personally don't like the idea of shaking up things to get Clark back in. In fact, there's only one man on the team that's won 3 Stanley Cups. He's been the veteran leader that these young guys needed to round out this team. I think Fedorov should be wearing the post season "C".

Who's with me on this?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 6, 2008 7:35 PM | Report abuse

@CT Caps Fan

I disagree. If Clark's ready bring him in. He crashes the net and provides needed brawn against the Flyers.

As for Federov wearing the "C". Not needed. The players respect and listen to him as if he was the "second C".

Posted by: Dezlboy | April 6, 2008 7:39 PM | Report abuse

first time some one takes a run at any player (not just ovie) send brash out there to lay down the law and really take it to the guy. That way it wont happen for the rest of the series or playoffs.

a quick thought- what is clarks defense like? if any of the call ups arent good enough to hang with the game in the play offs (or if someone else is hurt) is clarkies d good enough to put him on the blue line as a replacement? i really have no idea, so dont jump down my throat if this is a horrible idea.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 6, 2008 7:39 PM | Report abuse

@ DeadKings08,
As much as Fedorov's veteran status and calming presence has helped the team since the deadline, I really don't see it happening. They'd have to strip Clark of it first, which I don't think they would do for anyone other than Ovie, who seems to have made it clear that he doesn't want it for the next year or two (or three). And even then, I don't see Ovie being okay with them stripping someone else of the C to give it to him. Also, Feds has been with the team for only a couple of weeks (although what glorious weeks they've been). I don't see them giving such a "new" player the C. Just my opinion, but I'm relatively new to the finer points of the game.

Let's go Caps!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 6, 2008 7:41 PM | Report abuse

Philly's goals, and many playoff goals, tend to comme from crashing the net. That is what I like about Clark. He will work the corners and crash the net. If it was against Ott, I would not be as tempted to get him in. What I like about this is that we have a good problem to have. How is this for a lineup:

Like to find a place for Laing in this series too.

Posted by: CT Caps Fan | April 6, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

There is no doubt that Fedorov was just what this team needed. Semin and Ovechkin grew up watching Feds and they look up to him. He's cool under fire and he knows what it takes at this time of year. I expect more goals like the one in last night's game, which pumped up the bench and turned the game.

A friend with me saw it coming and blocked the punch, but be real careful they are truely a..holes up there about people from other cities coming to their town, but funny they bring that mentality with them here. Rich C: Flyer fans are the worst. I was at the old Cap Centre years ago and was taking a leak with my Cap's hat on (backwards). A Flyer fan knocked it off and made a nasty comment about my choice of teams...
So I did what any good Cap fan would do: I turned from my urinal and completed my business on his shoes. He took a swing at me, drunk as he was, but missed and hit the wall...I pushed him back and left him to defend himself against all my Cap's breathren...the cops came in and took him out in cuffs...I blew him a kiss as he was lead out.
Philly fans suck.

As bad as philly fans act toward visitors its eaqually bad to leave your caps brothers behind- so anyone going to philly: help out any other caps fans, not defending them in a fight is just as bad as starting one with them (particularly if you have a Brash jersey on, the irony of backing down from a fight with that on!)

I say for those of you going up there, form groups, protect each other, and dont leave anyone behind!!

Also, one more thought about defending the house. The Philly fans do that to make others feel uncomfortable. When thrown back at them, they either get arrested for over reacting or back down.

And here's a cliche you won't hear every day: "It's hard to beat a team 11 times in one season." Yet that's what the Rangers face in their first-round series with NJ.

PLAYOFFS!!!! In the event that any one was at the Green Turtle after the game yesterday, I was the idiot running around giving people Bud Lights and starting chants on chairs. Best sports week of my life being at these past three games!! This is so SO sweet.

Hope game 1 is Friday

Ovie went from being a -19 last season to a +28 this season I say we add the selke to his trophy case and just make it a clean sweep.

Lets Go CAPS

@DeadKings08: Thanks for the Hunter clip. Except for my wedding and the birth of my son, both of which came after, probably my greatest memory. I can't believe you found that clip for us! Does anyone remember the SI article from that week that was predicting another 3-1 Caps collapse? Not to be! Great fans on this blog - may we be continuing to rejoice in June!

I grew up in Philly - and I HATE all Philly sports teams for one simple reason: their fans are the biggest classless, low-life scum bags. I personally witnessed how their fans beat up opposing teams' fans, throwing snowballs and beers at the opposing teams, and booing the Canadian national anthem. It got so bad at the Veteran stadium that they had to set up court rooms in the stadium because they were arresting too many fans.

I do hope that we Caps fans stick up for one another, and gang up on any ignorant Philly fans that dare to harrass any of us in OUR house!

See you guys at the game!

I HATE Philly fans. I don't like hating anyone or anything, but I make exceptions. In this case, 20,000 exceptions. But come on, if you're not afraid of terrorists you can't be afraid of Phillies. Actually, I'm terrified of terrorists. They're really unpredictable. Philly fans are not. They maintain the same dull stare with the occasional bellow or burp.

From the Philly Inquirer:

"As a result, the Flyers get an easier draw with Washington and improve their odds of advancing. Ovechkin single-handedly carried the Caps into the postseason and is the favorite to win the Hart Trophy. The difference is, if you take Crosby out of the lineup, the Penguins can still beat you four ways. Take Ovechkin out and the Caps don't have a chance.

"When Ovechkin is going, their team is unbelievable," the Flyers' Scott Hartnell said. "He's the one guy we have to shut down to have any success against. He's a dynamic player. Everything he does is with speed. We will have to be on top of our game and check him to death. Shut him down and there's a good chance of us moving on."

Can't wait to show them how wrong they are.

@ Dinger

That makes me hate the Flyers even more! We are much more than just Alex...and he is much more than just a goal scorer! That's what makes him so dangerous against other teams...they all over look that he is quick and he hits hard! That's why we love him in DC! Goal scoring is just one of his talents. Rock on CAPS! Can't wait for game 1..whenever that is!

that newspaper article should be on the dressing room wall tomorrow at Kettler eh?

I've got two seat for the first game, glad I could eliminate some orange and black

Posted by: billd | April 6, 2008 10:31 PM | Report abuse

i hope every team thinks that Ovie is the whole team. That just means that backstrom, kozlov, laich, green, gordo, flash, semin, and oh! Sergeit Federov- only one of the greatest russian players ever- will be open. Some one mentioned a couple days ago that laich would lead the team in scoring in the playoffs- well that could come true and its fine by me. If ovie aint scorring then he must have two guys on him (or more) and that means somebody is wide open!!

"Hey Boo! Get Greenie's armor!"
Very Funny the armor is in the attic for now if you need it, let me know(except you will need more than my armor to survive Philly Fans)!!
As for Philthadelphia - hate them with a passion, way worse then Candy Cane fans - who are golfing next week at Pinehurst - hahahhahahahahahahahhahahahahahhahaahhah!
In that OT 7th game in 88'-89' I was 18 and I remember them passing a Philly fan down 20+ rows from the upper deck because he was so trashed he couldn't sit in his seat, they passed him to the concourse level over their heads to the security guards and carted him away in a green 4 wheeler, "THEY ARE THE WORST, MOST ABNOXIOUS FANS EVER"! GOOD LUCK WITH THE NO FIGHTING - JUST WORTHLESS!Just can't wait to beat them on the ice - always bad blood against them!!!!!!

Surprising thing is that the quote about Washington being a one-man team didn't come from anyone of the Flyers; it came from the writer for the Inquirer. If you want to see what good journalism looks like, don't look above.

Posted by: Dinger | April 6, 2008 10:41 PM | Report abuse

I've got three tix for each of the first two games, which means six fewer Flyers fans in the building.

Also, I'm a new STH as of yesterday morning!

Posted by: Dinger | April 6, 2008 10:46 PM | Report abuse

@ dinger,

well for good journalism DO look above...way above, to Tarik's post- hes great (as we all know) gives us the scoop, shows his pride of the team, but shows respect to the competitiveness of the other teams- that is good journalism when it comes to sports writing (that is necessarily somewhat biased to pleased readers)

Posted by: Anonymous | April 6, 2008 10:48 PM | Report abuse

Yes, my post was a subtle tip of the cap to Mr. El-Bashir for doing exactly what a journalist should (and doing it well): report the facts and let others do the opining.

Rd 1 info:

Game 1 = Friday @ 7
Game 2 = Sunday @ 2 (National TV)
Game 3 = Tuesday @ 7
Game 4 = Thursday @ 7

Now let's go to Philly to support the Caps for games 3 and 4. I've been there 2* during regular season in my jersey and haven't had any issues. People talk smack (we all do in fun). Folks were nice... at least close to the ice... actually said nice win too... I think if you sit in the upper levels thou that's when you meet the 'rough' crowd.

Back in the day at the Capital Centre. We used to chant FLYERS SUCK, FLYERS SUCK. Lets get that chant back.

Back, oh, about 2000 comments ago, someone was asking about the Ovechkin hand signal to the crowd to get people fired up after his goal in the Tampa game.

Dont' know if anyone has posted this, but there are now tons of Caps home video on youtube. Such as:

(at about 1:19). genius.

Good, I want the flyers. I want those neo drunkard quaker twits to come down & take it the wazooo.

@ Tracy

Thanks for the tip. Is that info posted anywhere else?

Anyone else wondering why they're waiting to start the series until Friday when there's an open date at Verizon Center on Thursday?

Oh well, it just means an extra day of rest for Morrisonn and Shultz (and, by the same token, Briere and Hatcher).

Posted by: Dinger | April 6, 2008 11:14 PM | Report abuse

Wait, I thought the playoffs begins on Wednesday. It's Friday?

Posted by: Danny | April 6, 2008 11:18 PM | Report abuse

I think the earliest day for a game per the NHL's wishes is Wednesday. Ours is going to be later (Friday)

Let's go Caps!

Thanks jmu_capsgirl.

It's going to be a damn long week!!! I have to write a brief this week. How am I going to get that done with my mind on the game the whole time?

Posted by: Danny | April 6, 2008 11:28 PM | Report abuse

there may be a wiz game on saturday and there is only one day between games so thursday sunday would be too many days- but it may be that they want the caps on national TV, and that is the sunday broadcast!!!! (i like this idea)

Been watching the highlights and the tivo'd game several times today. Just have to say -

How cool is it that Sergei Fedorov is a Cap???

The talk about how scary the Flyers fans are makes me smile. I'm originally from Europe and even the worst American sports fans seem as tame as newborn kittens to me compared to European soccer fans. Ever been to Turkey? They throw bottles at the goalies.

Ovechkin has quite a test for his first career playoff series. Bobby Clarke is still at the helm in Philly and he's the bastard that broke one of Russia's best players hand on purpose with a vicious slash in one of the 1970's Summit series. He never showed any remorse about it either. To him that's hockey. Ovechkin better keep his head up (as he always does) and Kozlov should take some boxing lessons from Brash in the space between now and Friday.

Posted by: ranndino | April 7, 2008 1:09 AM | Report abuse

I think it's going to be a knock down, drag out serious, hopefully it's over in a sweep!!!!
Our boys could use a couple of extra days anyways - not bad to start on Friday!!!
How cool would it be to have Nylander suit up????? Just a thought!!!!
@JSchon - Where have you been lately?????
No stats and no reply about my begging for FEDS to stay???????

Posted by: Greenie | April 7, 2008 9:10 AM | Report abuse

It will be the Flyers in five, maybe six. Ovechkin gets battered early, the Caps are distracted by the physical play and spurred into taking foolish penalties, and Philadelphia's tremendous power play eats Washington alive.

I am a huge lifelong Caps and Skins fan. Does anyone else who fits this description find the variation in quotient of fun level, quality of people interested and overall general fan experience disturbingly different between these two Washington organizations? I typically find myself disgusted with any and anything that goes on with the Redskins these days (ESPECIALLY the people who attend the games and the stadium itself), while attending a Caps game and chatting with you guys always seems to bring a smile to my face (and I swear it's not just because we're having such a great run this year) - I just think that, as a real Redskins fan as well, I find the disconnect rather amazing.

Posted by: NoCountryForCapsFans | April 7, 2008 11:40 AM | Report abuse

Wow - and I thought Philly fans were homers. If any of you think either of these teams is going to roll over the other, think again. That said, I've been to several Flyers v Caps games in DC with half the seats empty, and those that were filled, half were wearing orange (that was even true last year when they were horrible). Expect to see a lot of Orange in DC for the playoffs, without seeing too much red in Philly...that's the difference in fan base.
