Caps trail Canadiens after two periods, 2-0

The Capitals had plenty of chances especially in the first half the period, but goalie Jaroslav Halak was simply too good.

First Halak stopped a bid by Alexander Semin, who had all the time he needed to set up a quality shot but instead sent the puck right into the goalie. Then he turned away Joe Corvo, who had a clear sight line to the goal.

Halak did get some help when Mike Green's shot hit the post, but he also thwarted Alex Ovechkin's backhander as the two-time league most valuable player skated in uncontested.

Halak stopped Ovechkin on several other attempts during the period, which was played virtually the entire time in the Canadiens zone.

Semyon Varlamov, meantime, had little action in his end but did make a clutch save late in the period on Maxim Lapierre, who had gotten behind the defense and had a one-on-one opportunity.

The Capitals played the final 1 minute 10 seconds with a man down after Eric Fehr was called for cross-checking.

The Capitals have never won a playoff series in which they lost Game 6. Either that game eliminated them or they preceded to lose Game 7.

I would think he should have, but Gordon went to his knees in front of Varlamov and the replay should it may have deflected of Gordon's left glove on the way in.

From previous post-

Welcome new posters....

Did you really NOT see this coming?

They've made the same mistakes all year long....most fans just didn't realize it because the end result was the best record in the league...

IMO, the problems are, in order:

1. BB's system. Not NHL playoff ready. Period.

2. Bad mix of players for playoff success. To much O, not enough D, too many skilled guys playing as individuals, not committed to getting puck deep, (was that another OVi turnover at the blue line?, Was that another time Semin didn't finish a check?)

3. OVI needs to change his game. He IS ONE dimentional. His game is noticed in ONE zone. Sure he hits. But what zone does he hit in? Malkin, Crosby, Zetterburg, Datsuk, Backstrom > Ovi.

Until he leads by example, and plays as hard in his own end, and in the nuetral zone as he plays in the O-end, he will never reach his potential, and will only help in 1 area of the game.

HOW TO FIX IT?

- That's the part i'm struggling with. Can we really consider firing BB? He's a staple in this town, has led us to be the hottest ticket in town, is on every freaken commercial, etc.

- Get rid of Semin and Green? Maybe..

- Get rid of OVi? Come, that's not gonna happen. Plus, even with his deficiencies, he still contributes. Just not at the level a Crosby, Malkin, or other top CENTERs can (don't flame me with stats. Those guys kill penalties, win faceoffs, dig the puck out of their own end, and ensure posession of the puck).

I don't care about historical records.

I just look at this team and how it's been unable to make any successful adjustments to Montreal's play.

That's what worries me, not what entirely different versions of this team did in past decades.

Posted by: tmac2yao | April 26, 2010 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Maybe the caps need NHDP Network Hockey with Craig Lochlin?

Posted by: floms | April 26, 2010 8:57 PM | Report abuse

32 shots on goal so far, hang in there everyone.

Game's not over.

Posted by: orson72 | April 26, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Remember this series is a mimic of the Pens series. They were down 2 going into the third, score two in the third and then in O.T.......gotta go with Game Over M.G.

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | April 26, 2010 8:59 PM | Report abuse

Seriously, take out Fleichmann, put in Walker. Sorry, but Flash hasn't made one quality play all series and keeps making soft plays. He had one okay shot this game but that's not close to good enough for the amount that he's played. After that icing where Montreal took a timeout, what the heck was Flash doing on the ice taking a faceoff? He's the worse faceoff centre on the team.

In the 3rd they need to get traffic and shots from the point. Halak is playing too good for them to take open shots. They need either screens or deflections or they won't get 2 in the 3rd.

Posted by: Stu_c | April 26, 2010 9:00 PM | Report abuse

maybe we need another optional practise to fine tune our pp....oh never mind out stars don't do optional

Posted by: wendel2 | April 26, 2010 9:00 PM | Report abuse

You can't have both GM and BB here. GM has to go. BB can win with a GM who adds some balance the way Doug Yingst does in Hershey. Otherwise BB goes off the rails with his one-dimensional offensive schemes. Which is ironic considering they can't score. But they need a different mix in the playoffs.

It would be dumb to trade Green. He'll fine, he just needs better support and better coaching.

But Semin? he's too inconsistent. I'd dump him in the right deal. Let him score 40 and then fade away in the playoffs for another team.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 26, 2010 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Anyone else having flashbacks to the mid-90's? Boy, Halak looks a lot like Tom Barasso. Or Johan Hedberg. Or Ken Wregget. At least Varly isn't looking like Jim Carey right now...
I'm feeling ill.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Caps fans, look at the bright side--.......:-)

If the Caps DON'T make it to rnd 2, then we can watch playoff hockey stress free...I personally could use less stress..

If they do, then we can still cheer, hope for redemption vs. the flyers etc.

If you look at it like that, (I am), its a win/win.

And if Montreal wins, they'll play the Pens right (assuming Boston wins)? So we get to see what the Pen's stlye of play, coaching, and personel can do against these Habs. Hopefully that can serve like a blueprint for us in the offseason.

Posted by: floms | April 26, 2010 9:02 PM | Report abuse

btw anyone who disliked the Fehr penalty, you wouldn't have wanted Walker in the lineup. That's his style, he likes to wake up his team by stirring the pot and taking shots at goalies or Dmen in the crease.

Backstrom missed the net. Another golden opportunity blown.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 9:03 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 26, 2010 9:03 PM | Report abuse

how do you continue to blow chances?

Posted by: jdove80 | April 26, 2010 9:03 PM | Report abuse

nice play by Carlson to knock an Hab off the puck. Simple, effective.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 26, 2010 9:04 PM | Report abuse

We have no puck-handling skills.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 26, 2010 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Semin makes a good move there and loses the puck. Another chance blown.

Then Green skates in with speed but the Caps get nothing out of it.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 9:04 PM | Report abuse

tmac2yao: I AGREE COMPLETELY
"just look at this team and how it's been unable to make any successful adjustments to Montreal's play. That's what worries me..."

You put your finger on what is disgusting about this game. Come on, Montreal is winning with 2 players--Cammaleri and Halak. Surely, we should have found a way around it.

But in game #2 and #3 we seemed to have figured it out. We solved Halak & we used our depth to our advantage with repeated goals. What happened. It reminds me of the games vs. Pittsburgh where we had the advantage and kept being deflated with each succeeding game. I don't get this

Posted by: caraveli | April 26, 2010 9:04 PM | Report abuse

DAMNIT! If it weren't for Halak, Caps would be up.

Posted by: elicea | April 26, 2010 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Halak looks like he might be playing the pass. I think the passer should try to sneak a shot through on the short side.

Won't matter now because Varly gave up another awful goal. In a game like this, you need your goalie to make those stops because Montreal is getting easy ones and the Caps are having to work hard for their chances, which they aren't converting.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 9:07 PM | Report abuse

So...who starts in goal game 7?

Posted by: LloydChristmas | April 26, 2010 9:08 PM | Report abuse

I think you need to go to Theodore in game 7.

Posted by: snoopylad | April 26, 2010 9:08 PM | Report abuse

PATHETIC. UNPREPARED.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 26, 2010 9:08 PM | Report abuse

maybe for game 7 the first lineup change should be Bruce replacing himself with a real head coach who can motivate his team to play a full 60 mins.

If the Caps had played like this in the first period or all playoffs this series would be over by now. We've dominated when we feel like it. We're just a lazy freaking moody team

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 26, 2010 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Game over man. It's game over.

Posted by: cbs75 | April 26, 2010 9:08 PM | Report abuse

So what does Varly have to do poorly before BB gives Theo another chance? Varly has given up two goals he should've had but he stays put. Theo gives up a couple of goals that weren't his fault, he gets yanked. C'mon.

This game is over. Classic situation with the goalie being in our heads. We are not even favored to win in game 7 in my mind. If not for the miracle comeback of game 2, this series is over bc we are weak mentally and physically.

A shot from the center line almost eludes Varly there. A total team collapse tonight and in Game 5.

you have to go with varly. if your going to put theo in, put him in after the canadiens scored there third goal. bb doesn't trust theo, just like he didn't trust olie.

Posted by: TheSmurfs | April 26, 2010 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 26, 2010 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Varly, Theo....It doesn't matter. We just don't have the hot-goalie equivalent of Halak who will steal games for us and shut out the opposition. I thought for a long time that Caps should concentrate on getting a stellar goalie. Varly had the potential but he got deflated along with the rest of the team. If we can't figure out how to win against this team and lose the advantage we built, I don't even care if we win game #7. How will we go on to win round 2 and 3? How embarrassing to be shut out by an inferior team because we can't get through their young goalie.

I have been saying this for the last two years, but the Caps are not built for the playoffs...They are built for offense and in the postseason, offense takes a backseat as teams play a more defensive style of play. The Caps can't do this, because well, they don't have a good defense. Opposing teams are just clamping down in their own zone (similar to the Devils' style in late '90s) and not letting the Caps play their normal freewheeling style. All it takes is one hot goaltender and you are done! I want the Caps to win, as I have been a casual fan and grew up in the DC area, but I have to wonder if this team can get it done!

Horrible turnover, leads to a necessary penalty.

Good trade McPhee

to be fair , Corvo's been decent in this game except for 2 plays.

I think that was Knuble that missed a shorthanded opportunity off a big Halak opportunity.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2010 9:21 PM | Report abuse

WTF happened to shooting high on Halak? Every shot is low to his pad or right into his chest. He's made perhaps two real quality saves. I missed Montreal's first two goals, but they get a shot off in the third on a rare occasion and it's a blistering roofer. Our shot accuracy has been pathetic.

The PP is putrid and ran into a funk at the worst possible time. Raise your hand if you think we win game 7? I don't think we do. Wow we are a bunch of chokers. We are the San Jose Sharks of the East. Except even they got it done and moved on. We will never win a series under 7 under BB. NEVER. Be the best regular season all you want, you are USELESS if you don't get it done in the playoffs.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 26, 2010 9:24 PM | Report abuse

laich, flash, and few others have done nothing. I feel like I am watching the 80's caps. Halak has turned into Billy Smith, Kelly Hrudey, Tom Barrasso, Ron Tugnutt, should I go on.

Posted by: TheSmurfs | April 26, 2010 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Knuble missed another opportunity to bang home a rebound. So now the Caps are getting their best opportunities and either whiffing, missing or shooting it right into Halak, making him look better than he is. Ugh. Hard to take this kind of disappointment for another year. If the Caps lose this series, GMGM has to admit that the personnel he has isn't working. And you would have to figure that BB realizes his system needs tweaking. Or you'd think so ...

@cstanton1

What is wrong with the grit guys? Laich and Knuble can't do crap in front of the net. They each got over 25 goals this year and they have produced almost nothing throughout the playoffs. Oh, they got a couple of hits but they get paid to put in the rebounds.

Posted by: sgm3 | April 26, 2010 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: SuperZ3383 | April 26, 2010 9:18 PM |

I am not sure about getting BB fired, but you are right he is getting out-coached. I do blame him for the problems on the 2nd line and the pp. He was never able to set a 2nd line through out the year, and it is showing now in the playoffs. The pp hasn't changed, there is no rotation or movement, the guys are pretty much stationary and the majority of the shots are coming from the same two guys. A good coached team would easily defend them.

Posted by: hock1 | April 26, 2010 9:24 PM | Report abuse

I've been saying since that Chicago-game weeks and weeks ago that Bruce is "Hanlon-helpless" when it comes to getting his teams ready for the big games. It's nothing personal. He's a nice guy and, clearly, a good coach. But this year was a year for winning it all. Win or lose tonight, a Bruce-led team can't get past a Pittsburgh or a Chicago (much less BOTH of them).

Bad Bad coaching. He keeps playing Flash and others who are playing terrible. If you don't score, hit somebody, get a penalty call, get in front of the net. No, this is what happens when you face a team that does the little things better than you.

Montreal plays smart in all 3 zones.

We're all offense.

If our offense gets shut down, we don't have the habits or commitment to win a low scoring game.

It's all offense or nothing for this team.

Montreal is doing all the little things all over the ice that we aren't doing and that's why they are in this series.

It's more than just Halak.

The series aren't over. Caps lost the game but not the series.

The problem as I see it:
2nd line - blame BB not the players
PP - blame PP not the players
It has been the way BB has handled those two things that are causing problems now. The 2nd line lacks cohesiveness and it is too late to fix that now. The power play is stale, they need to move, rotate, they are predictable and that is why Montreal has had no problem defending them.

You may disagree but that is what I see.

it's not Capitals hockey if it doesn't go 7 games

The President's Trophy is actually a better indicator of a team's talent than the Stanley Cup anyway. They can't take that away from us.

Posted by: cplcespod | April 26, 2010 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Anybody who thinks that Theo is the solution is dreaming. He is less reliable than Varly, especially in playoffs. And we don't need little tweaks in the goalie situation. Halak showed us the kind of goalie one needs to go all the way. How embarrassing!

No matter what I read here and all the bashing of the CAPS, I still beleive and know that we WILL win game seven.

i am with you man. i like how we played tonight. hopefully they get a day off tomorrow and rest for game 7

Well, looks like the matchups are set...

Montreal at Pittsburgh
Philadelphia at Boston.

PP - blame BB not the players

This team is going to save me a heap of money by not having to pay for more rounds of hockey.

The President's Trophy is where it's at anyways.

Posted by: cplcespod | April 26, 2010 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Plus, hot goalie. Hey Caps fans, don't take it personally. The players should, but not the fans.

We did have a stronger opening but still ended up 2 goals down because we didn't take away time and space.

The Caps know what sort of an effort they are going to have to put forth in game 7. They brought it upon themselves and I have no sympathy for them. Anyway, if and when they lose the series they'll be out of town in a jiffy, leaving anguished fans in their wake. Well not this one, no sireee.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | April 26, 2010 9:47 PM | Report abuse

hold up, lets stop the bashing. we can bash all we want if they lose game 7. but this series is not over. remember a couple of years ago the flyers had the caps 3-1 and won game 7, then took out montreal in five games.

Posted by: TheSmurfs | April 26, 2010 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Amazing. #7 Flyers resting, Bruins bout to wrap their series up, and #1 Washington is having a whale of a time trying to beat #8.

Big lineup changes there Bruce: take out Morrison insert Steckel. Fleischmann should have been scratched. If you don't want to play Walker, I would have just as soon seen Perreault and Aucoin brought up just for energy.

To hear JoeB and Locker, if it wasn't for Halak the Caps would have won 8 to 2. Not sure I buy that argument. Montreal has outplayed the Caps this series. I do not feel one positive thought about game 7.

Posted by: kcbrichmond | April 26, 2010 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Barring a miracle on Verizon Ice, Ovechkin, Semin and Varlamov will be playing for their mother Russia in the World Championships. Knuble will go up to Philly to lament about his old team and the grit he misses, Theo will be a free agent and will probably land in Tampa and we will hear from Ted, GMGM and Gabby about how we ran into a hot goaltender. Hey let's feast on some more Panthers and Lightning and get some easy points to pad our "Southeast Division" crown.
Now Ted, you stuck to your plan, you built a talented team, but now you need to change your approach and add the right pieces to a puzzle that has been exposed during this series.

Posted by: diner99 | April 26, 2010 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Doesn't look good. Even if we win Game 7, this team doesn't look like its getting to the Finals. GMGM has failed once again to build a playoff team.

Posted by: mdmtnbiker | April 26, 2010 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Take out Steckel and Flash and put in BMo (or MP) and Walker.

Laich and Knuble really need to do something. The lack of production of Semin and Flash has been said enough. But Laich and Knuble need to start producing. I don't care about a few checks, it's been 6 games now, they are supposed to be grit guys who can put the puck in the net off of rebounds. Every time either got a chance they missed. It was pathetic.

There is a lot of blame to go around but Knuble and Laich deserve blame too. It is not just the skill guys who aren't producing, the grit guys aren't doing cr*p either.

Ovie, Backstrom and Fehr are the only guys who have produced in this series. Gordon has done decent too. No one else has done much of anything.

No one cares about the President's Trophy. They only care if you get it done during the playoffs. See if anyone cares or remembers who won the Pres Trophy after the Cup is awarded to the winner. stupid presidents trophy.

looks like montreal found their starting goalie for next year...so anyone think we can swap flash+shultz for price?

Posted by: johncaps | April 26, 2010 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Well, the one goal might be huge as a carryover to the next game. Shocker it happened one of the few times we drove the net and had traffic. Actually, we have done more of that than usual, but our D men are too shaky and unpoised to get the puck through to the goal. If you notice, the 20 year old Carlson is the only one that is clever and smart enough to get that simple task done consistently. Green is a headcase. Semin is a headcase. Flash is a headcase. Too many headcases in top positions on one team to be successful.

Game 7 will be the Cup or Bust. I was afraid of playing Montreal- they have our number (even in the regular season). Just match up bad with them. If the Caps win Game 7, it will get easier. But I don't think they will win the way Halak is playing.

Posted by: bushisacrook | April 26, 2010 9:52 PM | Report abuse

We play with no heart...none.

I think I kinda liked us better when we sucked. No expectations, couldn't be let down, and I could get a damn ticket without paying an arm and a leg.

Watching this series has been brutal...cutting years off my life.

When we win round 1, it will be a wake up call for this team and we win that series too.

Posted by: capsfan788 | April 26, 2010 9:55 PM | Report abuse

If Montreal does play Pittsburgh, we will have given them a free ride to the CF's. They will hit. They will play with more grit. And, they have a similar talent level as us. Malkin and Crosby will destroy the smaller Canadians in front of the net. That series goes no more than 5.

Posted by: rphilli721 | April 26, 2010 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Somebody had it right a few comments back, BB, GMGM, and Ted will blame this on running into a hot goaltender (obviously ignoring the fact he was chased a few games back). Another poster had it correct also, the %#&% Penguins are having their yellow brick road layed out before them.

Calgary Flames 1989 - went 7 games with Vancouver...mismatch with hot goalie and then they romped everyone else to win cup

Edmonton Oilers 1990 - went 7 games with Winnipeg...same sloppy play like Caps then surprise woke up and won cup.

Pittsburgh Penguins 1992 - went 7 games with Caps (came back from 3-1 down) and then only lost 2 more games on way to Cup.

New York Islanders 1982 and 1984 went full 5 games (Best of 5) in 1st round against Pittsburgh and Rangers then made finals (won in 1982)

I pick these examples because players on these teams all think that the adversity of round 1 taught them how hard they had to work to win and then they were better prepared than all the teams that waltzed through first round.

It could be a blessing in disguise.

Honestly, the Caps did not play bad tonight - the 3rd goal was weak but they were really pressing on Halak -

They still have a shot to win (glad Halak stood on his head tonight and not Wednesday)

As we know so often - what you did yesterday does not really matter when the puck drops the next game. Lets hope the ice is good quality at Verizon Center on Wednesday.

I'm confused how people are blaming the defense this game? The problem was the inability to score and the complete failure of the PP. Varly let in a soft goal on the second one. The first one was a bad bounce. The D played fine.

But this is the second straight game with 1 goal and the PP is pathetic. I have no idea what to do on it.

I will say on the 5-on-3 that Backstrom should have gone out a little higher so he would be a shooting threat causing a defender to cover him closer.

I would go with trying BMo on the point with Green. When the Caps did that when Ovie was out the PP flourished. Just a thought but I think the Caps should try anything now.

Does BB put in Theo for game 7 for a change of pace? Varly let in some soft goals. He had a couple of nice saves but didn't perform as he needed to in the first period.

Posted by: sgm3 | April 26, 2010 10:01 PM | Report abuse

I'd put Green and Carlson on the point for the PP and put Ovi down low

Posted by: lynchburgvacapsfan | April 26, 2010 10:02 PM | Report abuse

I missed the first two goals, but to say the third goal was a bad goal is insane. It was a blistering slap shot roofer. The kind of shot we have not had the last two games.

Posted by: rphilli721 | April 26, 2010 10:05 PM | Report abuse

I say play Theo. I don't think Varly played bad, although the 3rd goal was a little weak. They just need another spark and Theo may come out with a chip on his shoulder to show BB and the habs up.

Only person that played tonight that I would sit is Steckel...I didn't think he played very well. There are a lot people not scoring, but they are our best players and sitting them at this point doesn't help us. Hopefully they show up for game 7 or should I say hopefully the Halak of game 5 and 6 doesn't show up.

I can't wait for the spin of all the "bloggers" who are "touch points" for Ted & the Caps.

This team needs leadership and inspiration, and despite a lot of shots on goal, nobody took the bull by the horns and showed the team how to win. OV - time to step up and be the leader.
