Caps trail Canadiens after one period, 1-0

Just when it appeared the Capitals and Canadiens were headed for a scoreless first period, Marc-Andre Bergeron quieted the Washington faithful with a power-play goal in the closing 30 seconds, beating Semyon Varlamov with a slap shot. Montreal had gone on the power play after defenseman Mike Green was called for cross-checking.

Playing in a Game 7 they didn't expect to be in, the Capitals came out firing before a frenzied crowd that included Vice President Joe Biden, whose last major sporting event was the women's Final Four in Houston earlier this month.

The Capitals took four shots in the first 90 seconds but were not able to penetrate goalie Jaroslav Halak, who stopped 53 shots in the Canadiens' 4-1 victory in Game 6 at Bell Centre. Entering the game, Halak had stopped 90 of Washington's last 92 shots.

With just under eight minutes to play, the Capitals had their best scoring chance when Brooks Laich skated down the left slot with the puck and passed to Alexander Semin, who had 40 goals during the regular season but has not scored in this series. Semin's redirect, however, bounced off the post.

Capitals Coach Bruce Boudreau made a couple lineup changes for this game, including recalling defenseman Karl Alzner from Hershey for his NHL playoff debut after regular defenseman Tom Poti had a puck hit him in the right eye during Monday's Game 6. Poti had surgery yesterday that will keep him out at least several weeks.

Winger Scott Walker also made his playoff debut with Washington, playing on the fourth line with Boyd Gordon at center and Matt Bradley at right wing.

Well well well Mr. Boudreau what do you think of your beloved boy that you love so much who continues to struggle on the blue line. Comes up the ice and has he done many other times in this series - LOSES THE HANDLE on the puck and then takes a stupid penalty. I don't care if the d-man was off balance. He put his stick out in a crosscheck motion and pushed him.

Unfortunately the bounces again aren't going the Caps way. Semin hits a post. The Caps play 19 minutes and then bam they make a mistake. Yes it's only 1-0 after 1 but we'll see what this team is made of now.

Mike Green is a waste. Your Norris Trophy finalist at his best = JOKE.

@wocoliz

Who cares if the Caps were great coming from behind in the regular season? That doesn't mean a damn thing in the postseason. Caps have to get a lead and play from ahead. There's no silver lining in a deficit after one period.

BB needs to start playing a matchup game because Martin is taking him to coaching school right now. BB can't have this attitude that matchups don't matter because they absolutely do. Get OV out there against lesser D pairings for once.

Posted by: CDon | April 28, 2010 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Green may have just cost the team the game with that one. Watch the Habs will win 1-0. I ahve always defended Green but he really is making some silly mistakes.

MIKE GREEN IS REALLY STUPID

Posted by: gocaps01 | April 28, 2010 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Only way this period is a success is if Caps are even or ahead. Being behind after one, after the way they played, is a massive disappointment, and that can't be overstated. At all.

I am afraid the Caps season just eneded on that goal. The last two games they pretty much lost from the 1st period goals.

Posted by: pkme | April 28, 2010 7:55 PM | Report abuse

It's not a good feeling when I'm watching and I don't think anything is getting by Halak. Everytime we're in our offensive zone I think the shot is going to get blocked or go wide or Halak will make an insane save.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | April 28, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

@rachel216

I, too, have the feeling that the Caps will never score a goal against Halak. I'm sure that's not true (or at least I hope it's not true), but I certainly don't see it happening.

Posted by: CDon | April 28, 2010 7:57 PM | Report abuse

As much as I want to say that Semin and Green are snakebitten, failure to produce for such a long period time shows they aren't snakebitten but unable to come through in big moments.

I really, really hope they prove me wrong this game, but I doubt it. The Caps are going to need Ovie/Backstrom/Fehr, the 4th line and Carlson to score goals because it doesn't look like anyone else can.

Posted by: sgm3 | April 28, 2010 7:57 PM | Report abuse

There's a reason Mike Green didn't get picked to play for Team Canada in the olympics. The guy is def. not a gamer. Never steps up when it matters and instead hurts the team w/ an absolutely terrible penalty.

Posted by: saltine182 | April 28, 2010 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Mike Green could fill a dumptruck with suck and still have plenty of suck left over to hand out to the suckless. Sheeeeesh!

Habs scoring 1 goal isn't the end of the world...its not like we were gonna win this game 1-0 anyways. Only way we win is if our offense goes BONKERS and puts up a 4-spot in a period like we did in games 2 through 4.

CALM DOWN PEOPLE. lets worry about our own offense. as long as we convert on our own damn power plays, we'll be fine.

When the Habs go to the second round and Halak is made to look silly, I will be screaming for BB's head.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | April 28, 2010 7:59 PM | Report abuse

I won't blame Varly for the goal that got through, but if the Caps are going to win, they're going to need him to step up BIG TIME and make some insane saves.

For those of you who don't think there is any way you can fire a coach after a great regular season, Marty Schottenheimer called and said you are brilliant!

Posted by: nomarjax01 | April 28, 2010 7:59 PM | Report abuse

It's mistakes like that which lose games. At this point in the season there will be very few errors and teams will mostly take advantage of any chances they get. But after playing an extremely good period I hope Green's mistake didn't suck some of the life from the team. Unfortunately now Montreal can try and trap the rest of the game and capitalize on turnovers instead of needing to press the attack at all. Definitely not the situation Washington wanted to be in and it was completely avoidable. Still al long way to go but the team can't afford another mistake like that.

Alzner's been solid so far. So that's something positive. Him and Carlson have been the Caps best defensive pairing.

Does anyone else thing Green's stick is too long? When the puck goes back to him at the point he seems to have a hard time controlling it if it's at all close to his body and takes a while to get it to his forehand.

Posted by: Stu_c | April 28, 2010 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Come on fellow Caps fans. The game is not over as yet. Lets have some faith.

Posted by: instinct227 | April 28, 2010 8:00 PM | Report abuse

excellent illustration by Locker on that goal

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 28, 2010 8:00 PM | Report abuse

And it should be noted that despite the way the Caps have played, they're only outshooting Montreal 11-8. So while they're generating pressure, they really aren't getting a ton of chances. They're just skating with the puck behind Halak or along the boards.

And now that they're up 1-0, the Canadiens get to fall back and play their defensive game, which will surely frustrate the Caps.

Posted by: CDon | April 28, 2010 8:01 PM | Report abuse

All we need to do is continue to hit their D-men and crash the net. They will tire and Halak will eventually yield.

kman2 -- have you watched this series? The Habs are playing their game to a T and the Caps are frustrated because they cannot play their game. The Habs needed only 2 goals the last game. This is not the game the Caps wanted, but the one the Habs had to have.

Ted Leonsis did not become a business genius by rewarding mediocrity and accepting repeated failures in pressure situations. Even an individual with marginal business acumen recognizes that success through moribund competition mixed with constant failures when faced with significant obstacles is a definite signal of the need for organizational change.

Posted by: nomarjax01 | April 28, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

Mike Green, skating into the offensive zone, on a 1-on-3 was it? Yes, please, CROSS-CHECK ONE OF THEM! THAT WILL HELP! BECAUSE THEN YOU'LL ONLY HAVE TWO OTHER DEFENDERS IN FRONT OF YOU!

One of the stupidest penalties of the year, in one of the most important games in Capitals history. Thanks, Mike. Brilliant.

I'm ready for him to sit. I don't care if it tires out the other defensemen. Seriously, he needs to stop playing now. He is hurting the team.

Posted by: youaresquishy | April 28, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

Besides his atrocious play, the most disturbing aspect of this Mike Green saga are his and BB's quotes after each game.

Both Green and BB shockingly are convinced that Green needs to focus more on his Offense.

I feel like we still can. Game 2 people. It wasn't long ago we came back from more more then just one. Yes Halak is hot but he seemed to be then as well. This game is far from over. One good bounce and we are back tied.

I don't get Green... I'd been trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but that penalty was so ridiculously boneheaded.

Gangbusters every regular season. Ok at best and a flat-out liability at worst every postseason. That's the rep he seems to be trying to earn.

Posted by: ModestProposal | April 28, 2010 8:03 PM | Report abuse

Last year the excuse for the way Green played in the playoffs was fatigue and injury. What's the excuse this season? At least Semin showed up last year, so we know he has it in him. Green doesn't even look like an NHLer out there right now. I'm worried he will never be a playoff player either.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | April 28, 2010 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Shocking this is how the Caps would start the period. That's why going into the first intermission down a goal was a killer. The Caps already look down, depressed and beaten. I really think going down by two goals is a death knell because the Caps can't score on their own PPs.

HOW THE HELL ARE THE HABS ALWAYS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE NET?!?!?!

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 28, 2010 8:07 PM | Report abuse

The Habs are not that good. They pretty much suck. They are a power play team. Halak is doing pretty well, but mostly the Capitals are not playing very well the last couple of games. Lots of shots, but mostly not the right kinds of shots.

But I am confident they will pull this out, even if Mike Green continues to play his normal amount of minutes. Because losing in the first round to the worst team in the playoffs, after being up 3-1, after leading the league in the regular season for the first time ever, would be ridiculous. I will not be able to cope with a loss here, and would have to check into an asylum.

BB is being outcoached. I sometimes don't appreciate BB's hubris. He thinks he doesn't need to play to matchups because he has guys who can score against any D pairing. Well, that's proven not true through six games. If he would use the last line change to his advantage, he could potentially get OV and the top line out there against a lesser Montreal D pairing. He's going to have to start coaching more strategically to keep this series alive. Get over yourself and start coaching playoff hockey.

Posted by: tomfoley1 | April 28, 2010 8:23 PM | Report abuse

I don't know what team I am watching - Green is a choke artist.. he sucked last year in the playoffs. Semin scores that goal in the 1st period 39 times out of 40. Tonight he hits the post. We are snake bitten.

Reminds me of the Scrapitals a few years ago, outplay your opponent and lose 2-1. Gonna be a long summer!

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | April 28, 2010 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Point blank shots and juicy rebounds guaranteed :)

Posted by: tomfoley1 | April 28, 2010 8:29 PM | Report abuse

Caps look like the bad 5-on-5 team in this series, that's for sure. Canadiens are forcing everything to the outside. Montreal forwards pack in tight to the goal, so they do end up blocking a ton of shots, but that should mean that guys are open at the points and in the high slot. I really haven't seen much of Knuble in front of the net in this series. Time he earns his money and pokes in some rebounds.

All season except in this series. And there's Green not fielding another puck cleanly and then committing a penalty. This guy has been ATROCIOUS. I don't know when or if he learns. So here we are at the end of another period and the Caps potentially going down two goals heading into the third against a goalie who they can't beat.

All this extracurricular stuff after the horn just shows the Caps frustration. Outcoached and outclassed are the only two words to describe this series.

Posted by: CDon | April 28, 2010 8:38 PM | Report abuse

I don't think the problem is Green playing period. He made a great pinch earlier and was doing good. It seems late in the periods tonight he just runs out of gas or something. He just stopped moving his feet on that last call. I think the biggest thing is to give him much less minutes so when he is on the ice he actually has the energy to do something.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Maybe the Caps should pull the goalie to start the third period

Posted by: nativedc | April 28, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Here's the difference. On their power plays we give them much more room to operate. When we have the power play, they guard us a lot closer.

Posted by: Thundershock | April 28, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

we are not scoring on halak tonight. no way it's happening. their defense is too good. ovie, nick, semin, no one can do anything. all the shots are wide, weak, just not high quality shots. lots of fanning too, esp. by semin but what's new with that? they have one period left... never thought this would happen. 121 points for a first round exit?

Posted by: rachel216 | April 28, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

The Caps have out hit the Canadiens, 21-8. They've outshot them 24-11. But, look at the blocked shots. Montreal has a huge advantage at 26 to 6. My guess is they're pretty bruised about now. Let's hope adrenaline can't sustain them in the third. Go Caps go!

Posted by: Terptwin | April 28, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Doing the same things over and over hoping for a different result is called insanity. Why is everyone shooting as soon as the hit the zone? No passing, no cycle, just get the puck, rush up ice and shoot. It hasn't worked in two games, it's not going to work now.

Posted by: ablake70 | April 28, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Well once again the Great 8 continues to FAIL to show up in Big games. Take the Olympics. Take Game 7. Last year - it took a fossil in Federov to save this team. Then they tanked against Pittsburgh. This team just doesn't know how to let loose and just play their game.

They obviously didn't watch Detroit last night. They didn't care if it was Game 7. They went after it and look what happened. Caps are not getting after it.

Every trip the Canadiens take into their zone is an adventure. I want Bob Woods fired. They need a new defensive system and a couple d-men that can lay people out. They hit nobody.

Montreal will win this game 1-0. I hope I'm wrong. Again whose shot gets through on the PP - Carlsons. Green - blocked - Corvo blocked. It's like these guys don't even look when they're shooting. It's called having vision. George McPhee's team will come up short again because of another failed attempt to find d-men that clear out the front. I still remember one rush the Caps had 4 men back and they stood around while the puck was in their skates.

20 minutes left for this team to show something. Anything because right now - they're flatlined.

Posted by: pensfan57 | April 28, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

let these French Fs come back from 3-1 in the series.
------------------

and thats really why the regime needs to be changed. It has nothing to do with Halak or the last 2 games where the effort has been much better. Has to do with the lack of focus and direction from mgmt and coaching.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 28, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Too bad we're stuck listening to Pierre McGuire in Canada. His brilliant insight, as the Caps were on their second power play, was that Montreal has blocked 22 shots to only 5 for Washington. Um, Pierre, the Caps are outshooting the Habs, 24-11, which means they've been dominating play.

Posted by: RisRap | April 28, 2010 8:44 PM | Report abuse

I don't think I will be able to watch the remainder of the game if the Caps don't score within the first 5 minutes. I will not be able to watch the great season come to an end.

Posted by: instinct227 | April 28, 2010 8:45 PM | Report abuse

this is how the Isles beat us with the Lafontaine goal. A long shot that trickled thru a screen. That's how the Caps will score tonight.

Posted by: ablake70 | April 28, 2010 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, the shots from the rush do not seem to be working. They have such a good defensive zone presence I don't know how you can penetrate it. They form a perimeter around the slot. Just like the Spartans, every man is responsible to the man on their left. Then Halak gets to stop some easy low shots and sit on their one goal lead.

"Here's the difference. On their power plays we give them much more room to operate. When we have the power play, they guard us a lot closer."

No, they stack people in front of the net and get pressure on the point bc we are too damn timid and slow with the puck and not working together. The Canadians have outplayed and outcoached us. BB needs to be fired before I get excited about any playoff chances in the future. I don't care what they do in the regular season.

By the way, Montreal scores within 5 mins of the 3rd period and at some point we score a desperation goal, but lose. It's that or we lose without scoring. We are defeated mentally and our coach is too blame for this failure.

Wimpy needs to go. His "system" is a damn joke when it comes to playoff hockey and he is too damn bush league to coach at a championship caliber in the NHL. Green is a joke-- Canada knew what they were doing when they left him off the olympic team. This team has no heart, and GOD IT HURTS TO SAY THIS, Ovechkin is no Sidney Crosby. Not when it counts; not in the olympics and not in the playoffs. Very depressing.....

Posted by: pensfan57 | April 28, 2010 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Gut-wrenching...but hats off to the Habs, they showed that they know how to win in the playoffs.

The no-goal call was tough, but anyone who says that that cost the Caps the game or the series is fooling themself. Caps got outworked and outcoached and have a lot to learn about winning when it counts.

So very disappointing and arguably the worst loss (when viewed in the context of the expectations and regular season accomplishments of this team) in the franchise's already agony-filled history.

Posted by: Deakor | April 28, 2010 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Bullsh#t call on Knuble, no way his skate that barely grazed Halak wasn't pushed into him by the Habs player.

That aside BB made no adjustments this whole series, but instead thought things were going good because they were getting weak shots on Halak. Bad coaching

Ov and Backstrom are the only reason this series was close. The Habs outplayed them.

Green has to go, never have I seen such a bad defenseman in the NHL.
