Caps trail Canadiens after two periods, 1-0

Capitals goalie Semyon Varlamov made a huge save early in the period, turning away Brian Gionta on the doorstep after the Montreal forward had gotten hold of a loose puck. But soon following that save, the Capitals went a man down when Jeff Schultz was called for tripping. Washington managed to kill off the penalty.

The Capitals got their first power-play opportunity when Montreal forward Tomas Plekanec was called for tripping with 8 minutes 18 seconds to play. Washington, however, needed more than 40 seconds just to settle the puck into the offensive zone and thereafter was unable to get anything past Jaroslav Halak.

Alexander Semin had a quality chance in the late stages of the power play, but Halak handled his slap shot.

Several minutes later, Washington got another power-play chance when Josh Gorges was sent to the box for holding. John Carlson sent a slap shot through traffic during the power play, but Halak made a kick save. As the power play was ending, Brooks Laich put a weak shot right a Halak's skates that he had no trouble stopping.

Those two blown chances continued Washington's stunning run of futility on the power play, which is now 1 for 32 in the series.

Shot blocks are 26-5. The team needs to find a way to get shots through, or there are 20 minutes left in this season.

At least they didn't score on that Green penalty at the end of the 2nd. Two of those in a row would have been too much to come back from. Down by 1 going into the 3rd isn't ideal, but it's not overly bad either.

Posted by: Stu_c | April 28, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

where's all the positive thinkers now? where's all the people that said halak couldn't play well 3 games in a row?

where the f is our PP? where the f is the traffic in front? where the f is a coach that knows how to make in game adjustments?

the third and fourth line should be on the PP they are the only ones working, cycling and forechecking.

Posted by: natresgroup | April 28, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

We're only one goal down, and there are still 20 minutes of regulation to play. I refuse to give up on this team.

Posted by: wocoliz | April 28, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Good shot blocking teams have frustrated this team all season. They don't know how to react when their shots are blocked before they even get to the net. OV is predictable as hell. Skate down the side, attempt to bring the puck back to the middle and use the defender as a screen. You can book that move every time he has the puck. He has to change his game.

Semin just takes slap shots no matter where he is, so you just have to crowd him.

Backstrom seems to want to skate between people, so you close off gaps.

Knuble isn't anywhere near the net, so you don't have to worry about him.

Green will make awful decisions and turn the puck over a bunch, so you just wait for him to break down.

BB doesn't worry about matchups because of his hubris, so you don't have to worry too much about beating the Caps strategically.

A lot wrong with these guys.

Posted by: CDon | April 28, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

This is just ridiculous. To me the caps are starting to look stunned. Same blank stare as last year. Still have faith tho

Posted by: guer_j | April 28, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Every year, same stuff. Why?

Posted by: underpants2 | April 28, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

I'm not giving up, BUT

these guys give us little to no reason to think they're going to suddenly start playing smartly and less tight than they have the last 2 games. This is where BB needs to make the difference.

Posted by: snoopylad | April 28, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Mike Green's first penalty is the most glaring smudge in this game.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 28, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Well once again the Great 8 continues to FAIL to show up in Big games. Take the Olympics. Take Game 7. Last year - it took a fossil in Federov to save this team. Then they tanked against Pittsburgh. This team just doesn't know how to let loose and just play their game.

They obviously didn't watch Detroit last night. They didn't care if it was Game 7. They went after it and look what happened. Caps are not getting after it.

Every trip the Canadiens take into their zone is an adventure. I want Bob Woods fired. They need a new defensive system and a couple d-men that can lay people out. They hit nobody.

Montreal will win this game 1-0. I hope I'm wrong. Again whose shot gets through on the PP - Carlsons. Green - blocked - Corvo blocked. It's like these guys don't even look when they're shooting. It's called having vision. George McPhee's team will come up short again because of another failed attempt to find d-men that clear out the front. I still remember one rush the Caps had 4 men back and they stood around while the puck was in their skates.

20 minutes left for this team to show something. Anything because right now - they're flatlined.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | April 28, 2010 8:44 PM | Report abuse

There are about three or four Mike Green smudges I remember from this game.

Posted by: CDon | April 28, 2010 8:44 PM | Report abuse

CDon, yeah, what's up with Knuble? At this start of this series, he was all over the net. Or at least he was during the first two games in Montreal and for part of game 2. What happened to him? Did his old bones just finally give out?

Ah well, 20 more tortuous minutes and it'll all be over for another year. Thank goodness.

Posted by: fanzee71 | April 28, 2010 8:44 PM | Report abuse

The Caps blew their opportunity at this game when Semin hit the post in the first. They score and the Habs have the pressure on them.

Posted by: kman2 | April 28, 2010 8:46 PM | Report abuse

This is just so infuriating. I watched so many damn games this year and enjoyed so many wins, but the performance the last two games and up to now is P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | April 28, 2010 8:46 PM | Report abuse

toe drags and trying to beat guys one on one is not going to work in the playoffs. this isn't tampa bay, florida, or atlanta. brooks laich said if you want money, go to the bank. if you want to score goals, go to the net. WTF. The caps have not even been physical this game, yet all series. maybe he is busy planning is post season party at his house.

Posted by: TheSmurfs | April 28, 2010 8:47 PM | Report abuse

The defensive performance isn't the result of Bob Woods, it's the result of a system that tells the D-men to do ALL the work while the forwards stay up near the blue line. It's the result of GMGM refusing to acknowledge he needs a rugged D-man or two who can move the puck out the zone. That's what needs to change, really. Notice Montreal always has four guys skating back any time the Caps have an opportunity. The Caps, on the other hand, have just the two D-men skating back to stop a chance.

Posted by: koscold | April 28, 2010 8:47 PM | Report abuse

so frustrated. to even be at this point is ridiculous. they had game 5 to close out this series and they didn't play like they cared. MTL= first #8 to come back from a 3-1 decifit against a #1.

maybe we should just accept the fact that MTL's defenders are just too good and not letting us do anything.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 28, 2010 8:47 PM | Report abuse

we just need one damn goal to get in the head of Halak. If u think about it, last game's goal was BS, cause it was after the game had been determined.
Halak hasn't allowed a meaningful goal in more than 120 minutes of game-time.

We NEED a meaningful goal--it will certainly get in the head of HALAK.

Posted by: kman2 | April 28, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

I think that BB needs to play the 4th line a few more shifts. I know down a goal that seems weird to say, but they are generating good scoring chances in front of the net and it looks like one will go in at some point.

As much as anyone wants to blame other reasons for the loss in the series (if it occurs) it has to be placed on the PP. It is one thing to have the PP % reduced some in the playoffs because it is the playoffs. But to go from over 25% to 3% is pathetic. And 32 chances is a large enough sample size to show it is pathetic.

Also, the only PP goal scored was scored on a rush up the ice. So the Caps hae scored NO PP goals all series after getting set up in the zone.

Posted by: sgm3 | April 28, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

I don't think the problem is Green playing period. He made a great pinch earlier and was doing good. It seems late in the periods tonight he just runs out of gas or something. He just stopped moving his feet on that last call. I think the biggest thing is to give him much less minutes so when he is on the ice he actually has the energy to do something.

Posted by: icehammer97 | April 28, 2010 8:38 PM |
-----------------------------------------
I agree. It often looks like he is lazy, confused, etc. but I think he's just TIRED. But this has been going on for a while now, so why doesn't BB play him less mins or whip him into better shape?!

But I'm also tired - tired of trying to figure out why Mike Green sucks.

Posted by: tomfoley1 | April 28, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

they are giving the pointmen the shots on the PP because their D is in perfect position to block the predictable shots.

shoot wide and have a guy to the side of the net. keep your stick on the ice and be ready to shoot. one rebound went right past semin's stick because he wasn't ready to shoot.

give the third and fourth line guys more time, they're the only effective players right now.

Posted by: natresgroup | April 28, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

No way the highest scoring team gets shut out in game 7 against the worst team in the playoffs. If that happens, I will eat my hat. If the Canadiens keep not scoring, Capitals will surely prevail.

Posted by: youaresquishy | April 28, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

I knew it was over in the first period when Halak made that move that most gymnasts can't even make.

Once again I will ask myself why I keep coming back....

Posted by: ebz40 | April 28, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

The same suspects refuse to get their noses dirty. Ovie and Semin shooting through a barrier of Habs is a total fail, what a wasted effort. We need a fight or blood spilled to ignite the team; this team lacks grit and cojones; it's now or never morons!

Posted by: Irreverent_inDC | April 28, 2010 8:50 PM | Report abuse

While I havent given up since the score is only 1-0 and the Capitals have played very well in the 3rd period during the series, and just need a fluke goal even to tie it up, a few things have jumped out at me. The biggest is Mike Green...This is his 3rd straight horrible postseason series, honestly I say its time to cut ties while we can get something really good in return. Carlson has shown he can be an offensive threat while actually playing defense and not comitting stupid penalties. Semin shoots from anywhere which I wouldnt have an issue with if we actually had people around the goalie when he does it. The Habs just clog up infront of the goalie blocking everything that gets near, so we need a traditonal slap shot on a break or something to get past them...Not the best outlook for playoff hockey

Posted by: Killerangel81 | April 28, 2010 8:50 PM | Report abuse

everyone in here is ignoring the big elephant in the room. Anyone paying attention over the past 20+ years knows for a fact that the Washington Capitals are CHOKING DOGS. a loss tonight is inevitable.

Mike green, game over. He looks out of shape, and is beaten time and again. Drawing a penalty for a lackluster power play does not erase 5 games of awful play.

"Here's the difference. On their power plays we give them much more room to operate. When we have the power play, they guard us a lot closer."

No, they stack people in front of the net and get pressure on the point bc we are too damn timid and slow with the puck and not working together. The Canadians have outplayed and outcoached us. BB needs to be fired before I get excited about any playoff chances in the future. I don't care what they do in the regular season.

By the way, Montreal scores within 5 mins of the 3rd period and at some point we score a desperation goal, but lose. It's that or we lose without scoring. We are defeated mentally and our coach is too blame for this failure.

Anyone else remember the '98 run?

The Caps weren't that great a team, let's be frank. There were two things they had, though - a smart and irritating team with a mountain of heart, and a red-hot goalie. Kolzig would take shot after shot after shot and just gobble them up, so much so that I didn't even flinch when Boston, Ottawa, or Buffalo skated in on him. He was just that turned on.

The Caps would often get badly outshot and outplayed, and yet on the offensive opportunities that they had, they'd skate in on their goalie and catch him sleeping.

Sound familiar? I've been thinking about that a lot the last 6 or 7 periods of play...

It's only one goal, guys. Still anyone's game if you can get one (more) past Halak. COME ON, GUYS. I STILL BELIEVE.

Why the F is this being reviewed?!

Posted by: wocoliz | April 28, 2010 9:11 PM | Report abuse

So some Caps player tries to kick a puck down, misses and gives Montreal a good opportunity. Then SEMIN doesn't clear the puck out of the zone, giving a weak poke at it, giving Montreal another opportunity to score that the refs waved off. That's the reason why the Caps just aren't successful in the postseason. It's attention to detail stuff like that. This team is full of immature players with no mental toughness.

Posted by: CDon | April 28, 2010 9:11 PM | Report abuse

Again, an open net and the Caps shuffle it into Halak, then Carlson seems to miss the net or have it blocked. Caps aren't getting great chances, but when they do, they're not getting bounces, either. It just seems like the Caps were destined to lose this series from the start.

Posted by: rskinsfan | April 28, 2010 9:17 PM | Report abuse

A goal waved off on the ice for goaltender interference cannot be reversed on review, period.

If that was the call on the ice, the review officials were misinformed about what the call on the ice was. It could be a situation where the ref called both that the puck went in after the whistle blew and even if it didn't it was interference. I'm sure there was just a bit of a communication breakdown there between the on-ice ref and the replay officials.

And the ref does have discretion to wave off a goal for goaltender interference and not call a penalty when the interference is incidental.

BB likes Yankees baseball analogies. So here's one. BB is like Buck Showalter when he managed the Yankees. Showalter had great talent but couldn't get the job done in the postseason. Steinbrenner fired him and hired Torre and they wont some World Series titles. I gotta wonder if BB faces the same fate. He's helped turn the team around, but he hasn't been able to get this team over the hump in the postseason. Maybe a new voice is needed precisely for this time of year.

Or maybe they just need better personnel.

Hi kids. Collars gettin' a little tight? For the first time that I can remember IN MY LIFE, it's "VIVE LES CANADIENS!!!" I HATE the Habs, but I want to see your poster child in-residence (Ovie) and his team go down in the worst way. That might show Bettman and the rest of the clowns running the NHL that hitching the league's wagon to a couple of individuals instead of its teams, a la the NBA, isn't the way to go. That and the Bruins would get Philly (instead of the Penguins) and home-ice advantage in the next round. I hope that I haven't spoken too soon, but I couldn't resist. This isn't basketball; hockey's a team game in which uni-dimensional one-man gangs with dubious goaltending lose to TEAMS. And with that, it's 2-0; happy offseason, Caps fans. Washington Capitals = San Jose Sharks East.

Any other team in any other city in any sport would fire this guy who has no idea how to build a playoff team. He needs to go and it needs to be announced tonight.

If BB doesn't pull Varly there, I think Montreal doesn't take those kinds of attempts at an empty net. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL coaching and terrible performances from Green and Semin. Caps deserve to lose this game and this series. A COMPLETELY WASTED SEASON. I wasted six months of my life following this bunch of losers and morons. Thanks, guys. Caps fans should leave and refuse to cheer for the Caps. They don't deserve it.

Lose 3 of 4 at home, barely won the one they did. No team worthy of playoffs does this. Caps are forever to be smirked at by opposing teams.

Posted by: sparman | April 28, 2010 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Why did they pull their goalie with almost 2 minutes left and a powerplay? That was a brutal coaching decision. With that much time left Montreal was able to just kill the clock by dumping it down with Washington having no one back there. That didn't make any sense. With the powerplay, work it until there's about 30 seconds left, then get an offensive zone faceoff and pull the goalie if needed. But don't risk the entire game on winning one faceoff with almost 2 minutes left when you have all the momentum. Bad coaching in my opinion. Not having him in net killed probably 40 seconds of the final 1:44 because of the amount of time needed to skate back and get the puck. I don't get it.

Posted by: Stu_c | April 28, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

I wonder if Gene Wang finally gets it now. Maybe he just hadn't been around long enough to see these kind of Washington Capitals Playoff Collapses (TM). Well, some of us have and we know what they look like while they're in the making, not just after they're done. Now he does, too.

That's it for this team. History has shown us that when squads demonstrate this degree of mental frailty, there is no repairing it. The heart of the team is permanently and irredeemably flawed. None of the guys who were at the center of this debacle will ever recover to find success. The problem cannot be fixed by repairing the pieces that remain. The pieces need to be removed. Everyone at the nucleus of the team -- yes, him too -- needs to go. And that includes the coaching staff and the general manager.

It's time for a fire sale. Many of these guys have great trade value. Leonsis needs to blow it up and start over. I would begin with finding a Stanley Cup winning coach who won by taking a talented team and forcing it to play a defensive style. Do what it takes to lure that guy over and go from there.

RIP the "new model" Washington Capitals: 2008-2010

Trade Semin for a bag of pucks and get Green to swap jobs with the Geico caveman. A decent goaltender and a coach who doesn't pull him after 2 goals might help too.

Also someone needs to tell Shrekkie-O that he's distinctly average at stickhandling, so trying to weave around all 5 opposing players is a very bad idea.

CHOKE!!! That's as bad as I've seen since Montreal, with Ken Dryden on his maiden voyage, beat the record-setting Bruins in the first round in 1971. And as I constantly remind Sharks fans who I know, out here in Northern CA, the regular season doesn't matter, especially for teams with the physical talent and gaudy regular-season stats that the Caps have. Meanwhile, the Bruins, who on 4/1 looked in danger of missing the playoffs entirely, have home ice in the next round while the Caps will be GOLFING. Good night and make it a good summer, Caps fans. And BTW, that in-the-crease call that cost the Caps a goal? Good call, even though they don't call it anymore; the goal crease DOES matter after all. I remember the 1998 B's-Caps series during which Boston lost an OT game (and the series) in which that in-the-crease thing came into play. Do you?

If this doesn't show GM GM that he needs a playoff tested goalie, at least one or two enforcers, and a stay at home defenseman, I don't know what does. Bruce has his system and I agree with others, his system is not built for a playoff run. I don't know if firing Boudreau is the answer, but if he is my vote is for Dale Hunter. Someone who is grit through and through and knows how a playoff run works. Green, Semin and Fleischmann were TERRIBLE!!! Green and Semin need to be traded for stay at home defensemen. We already have enough offense in the system. We need a playoff tested goalie. I think Varlamov is the Russian Jim Carey IMO. BB should have gone back to Theo for this game. It's obvious that being the best team during the regular season and having the best PP in the regular season (like Laughlin and Benenoti like to repeat) means nothing, nor does how many shots on goal they have, nor how many face offs they win or who has the best plus/minus, the only thing that matters is the final score, if the Caps are going make changes in the off-season (they need many) they should also consider a new broadcasting team, those two clowns must go as well. Have fun at the links boys.

I totally agree that BB's allegiance to Green is going to be his undoing if he does not wake up and stop defending him! Semin, I hate to say needs to be traded for a stand up D or another mucker/grinder. Backie, and Ovi are not at fault for this mess, they actually scored! I can forgive Flash, but Green, damn he is bad in the playoffs!!! He does not deserve the Norris! Mcphee and BB need to realize that we can not win w/o D and until the team learns how to play it, we will con't to lose in the playoffs.

As a former resident of Buffalo, I know heartbreak! Wait until you've been to the SuperBowl 4 straight years and lost.... Have faith Caps. We had a great season and lots of awesome games. I still love my Caps and will happily buy your season tickets if you want to give them up!

Well at least we get a higher draft pick. Now McPhail can draft another soft euro forward or offensive defenseman who sucks at defense.
