Caption contest: Alex Ovechkin and Brooks Laich

(Martin Rose/Getty Images)

Above, officials separate Capitals teammates and international rivals Alex Ovechkin and Brooks Laich during Russia's 5-2 thrashing of Canada. (Gamer is here.)

Let's take advantage of today being a Friday (the only day that allows for something as trivial as a caption contest) and have at it in the comments below.

Canada doesn't care about the World Championships now that they've been bounced. If they didn't care they wouldn't have asked Vinny, St. Louis, Green, and Crosby, among others. They may have been young but one of this year's Rocket Richard recipients were there as well as last year's #1 overall pick.

@SoaringCaps - Wow! Really? Ovi and the rest of the Caps PLAYERS might actually have felt worse than you about being eliminated... you know?... since they PLAYED in those games. Though I'm sure watching it was super hard too, especially knowing that if YOU could only get out on the ice, it would make all the difference. I'm sure the whole team is very sorry that their loss has hurt your poor feelings. Maybe they'll work really hard next year for YOU.

my guess is that some team will pay him more than what the caps would be willing to offer. If you havent' noticed, most of the FAs we get don't get much interest from other teams. Therefore there's no competition for salary.

another FA Bruin is Shawn Thornton. Played a lot of minutes this year again and proved he can play any type of role asked of him. He'll do all the dirty work on the 4th line and he'll provide a grinding presence on a higher line if necessary. Just an honest hardworking legitimate NHL tough guy who has good years left in him. He can easily be counted on to play 10 mins/game as needed.

Posted by: Mike4169 | May 21, 2010 1:17 PM | Report abuse

The FAs we paid a lot of money for are Jagr, Nylander, Theodore. All of which the people that constantly trash this team bring up. GMGM landed Knuble at a good rate for 2 years, and brought in Brendan Morrison (who took less money to come here by the way) for practically nothing and GMGM gets a minus for that too. The goal is to bring quality FA players here for as little as possible.

Morrison admitting he took a little less to come here.

How did that Ponikarovsky trade work out? I remember you touting how that deal was an example of why Shero is such better GM than GMGM in that he would trade for hard-nosed, gritty players such as Ponikarovsky. @tominsocal1

No. Downie definitely has his good qualities. But he takes a lot of very stupid penalties that hurt his team. Toughness is good, and some penalites is fine, but Downie takes a lot of penalties.

The #1 pick is intriguing, but at #6 it is likely that player will be 1 to 2 years away from the NHL. The Caps need players who will perform today.

However, I would trade the Caps #1 pick for Downie.

sgm3: I am still thinking how to fit Volchenkov. Semin for Downie and #1, sign Volchenkov, trade Erskine for a #5 pick, cap neutral.

And we help to fill the pipeline with future low-cost prospects (ala Carlson for the next two years).

Yes, #6 pick and there a few highly-touted d-men available. Actually, I doubt tampa would do that unless they knew they could sign Semin.

@tominsocal1

Downie is a RFA, but I don't think he will make too much. If you read his wikipedia page he sounds like a head case.

I guess it would be an interesting route to take if also enabled the Caps to sign a high quality #2 center, which it should if the Downie doesn't sign for too much.

That #6 pick would definitely help a few years down the road when other players salaries start increasing.

It is definitely a different way to approach it, but is very intriguing. There are definitely a lot of positives to it.

Volchenkov can be fit in if Flash and Erskine go. Downie and a signed #2 center can be fit in wtih Semin going and the Caps also acquire the #6 overall pick. Fehr then moves to line #2. We just have to make sure Downie doesn't get thrown out of the league. ;)

Why would Tampa let Downie go after the year he had? Their top line is pretty set, and I would say untouchable.

Discussing a Downie trade is pointless, he's not going anywhere.

Erskine is signed for another year, and has no trade value. The only way the Caps lose that salary is sending him to Hershey. I am afraid we are stuck with him.

Flash needs to be signed, then perhaps traded. Caps shouldn't just let him walk.
