Caps vs. Hurricanes pregame roundup

By Lindsay Applebaum

(Toni L. Sandys/Washington Post)

Just to pass the time until this evening's 5 p.m. start...

*Carolina's Paul Maurice will coach his 1,000th game, becoming the youngest to reach that milestone. (News&Observer)

*Count Alan May among Caps Coach Bruce Boudreau's admirers.

*Japers' Rink challenges the assertion that Alex Ovechkin doesn't make those around him better players.

*Mike Milbury, via the Bog: "Take Ovechkin versus Crosby, the serious student. He can't take draws very well; he goes home in the offseason, takes draws until he can take them with the best of them. He can't score enough goals; goes home and shoots pucks into the dryer, and now he scores 50 goals with the best of them. Ovechkin? Went home to Moscow, and he did not shoot pucks into the dryer, I guarantee you that."

Please, Mike, find something other than Ovi vs. Crosby to talk about before the Winter Classic. Spare us all.

CAPS VS. CANES NOTES
(via the Caps)
* Washington leads, 71-44-14-5, entering the 135th meeting (39-21-4-1 at home).
* The Capitals have won the first two meetings this season, both in Carolina.
* Nicklas Backstrom has four of the six goals the Capitals have scored in the series this season.
* The Capitals were 3-1-2 in the series last year (as was Carolina).

Faceoff: Verizon Center, 5 p.m.
Records: Washington, 16-6-2; Carolina, 10-10-2.
Broadcast info: CSN, NHLN; 820 AM, 1500 AM.

Man do I hate Milburry!!!! He is so biased...he has hated BB since way before he became the Caps coach, and while some of the things he says about Ovie are true, but they sound ridiculous coming out of his mouth...we get it Mike...Crosby is Gods gift to the universe and Ovie is the spawn of satan!

And all this stuff about Ovie not working hard is over the top...he may or may not work as hard as Stamkos or crosby...i don't know, but the guy takes 2 minute shifts and is barely out of breath at the end and only takes about 45 seconds to recover! he can't be THAT lazy!

You have to realize that in the off season we get our news of ovie from the russian press...they focus on the party stuff b/c that is the culture. there were also reports of him hiring a new trainer, training with Dynamo, and the assertion that he doesn't work is insane!

Quite frankly I think it is crazy that we never see pics or articles of crosby out having a good time...either he is shielded from the canadian press, or he has no life which is also concerning...has crosby even been pictured with a girlfriend?

Oh my the Caps are 16-62! hahah.

Ward will probably be between the pipes but I still don't see the Canes winning. I'm saying a 3-1 win for the Caps.

there you go applebaum!! tell milbury your mind

Posted by: _stevo | November 28, 2010 12:36 PM | Report abuse

Who cares what Milburry says? Crosby and OV are both great players and enjoy watching both of them play.
What I would like to know is what is the meaning of “ ... toungest to reach that milestone”? Longest tongue?

Posted by: hock1 | November 28, 2010 12:42 PM | Report abuse

Jeez, I should really stop drinking so much during the day. Thanks @hock1.

Posted by: Lindsay Applebaum | November 28, 2010 12:45 PM | Report abuse

toungest? I thought Gene Simmons had that prize covered.

Posted by: cbl-pdx | November 28, 2010 12:45 PM | Report abuse

Seriously screw Millbury he's racist anyways.

How anyone employs him his beyond me no one wants to hear his voice and his stupid comments.

Posted by: digster1013 | November 28, 2010 12:45 PM | Report abuse

not to be mean to Katie, but why didn't Lindsay take over after Tarik?

Posted by: capscoach | November 28, 2010 1:38 PM | Report abuse

Wow, I'm blown away by the Alan May piece on BB. OK, Let's go get that cUp.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | November 28, 2010 1:39 PM | Report abuse

Milbury may be an anti-Russian, pro-Canadian chauvinist, but racist, no -- not unless he hates Hispanic, black, and/or indigneous players.

Milbury amazes me as a hockey critic in that he was a mediocre player, a terrible coach, and an absolutely horrid gm. The fact he gets to speak out on OV after the mess he left on Long Island absolutely dumbfounds me.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | November 28, 2010 1:39 PM | Report abuse

Folks, Katie is doing a fine job. Be nice to the ladies.

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | November 28, 2010 1:41 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: capscoach | November 28, 2010 12:31
I'm sure Milbury has plenty of pictures of Sid and him together.

Posted by: heathdog1119 | November 28, 2010 1:47 PM | Report abuse

I don't like Millburry's take on the Caps, but you've got to like a guy that goes into the Rangers crowd and beats a man with a shoe.

If that happened in the NFL or NBA they would have some tag on it like "World War 3 in the Garden". They would still be arguing about it 30 years later, which is why I love the NHL.

Rewatch the Erskine fight against Boulton. "Fight of the year"!!!

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | November 28, 2010 1:48 PM | Report abuse

According to Dmitri Chesnokov a Caps trade is perhaps in the works.

Posted by: ThePat | November 28, 2010 1:51 PM | Report abuse

@Hunter

but don't u miss the links to oposing teams news paper coverage, details about practice, and u have to admit that Tarik was more timely with his posts.

besides I said why not Lindsay...who is also a girl.

We may very well have been spoiled by Tarik, but I still miss the way he did things...I am a girl so you can't say I am sexist.

Posted by: capscoach | November 28, 2010 1:52 PM | Report abuse

Milbury is just speaking the truth, you all know it about OV and his antics, don't hate just because you're a Caps & anti-Pens fan.

Anyway just saw this, a trade may be in the works involving the Caps:

@thepat

nice to hear that GMGM might at least bekeeping his eyes open..

concerned at the timing though (if true and that is a big if)

could this be a response to Green's injury? Does he possibly need surgery?

Posted by: capscoach | November 28, 2010 1:58 PM | Report abuse

Tarik is far better than anyone on the Post, it was a dam shame he left, no one had more access to the players and gave the fans a glimpse of it, I miss all the videos of him interviewing OV... instead all we get is vids of BB which gets tiresome after a while.

Posted by: BigGameSid | November 28, 2010 1:58 PM | Report abuse

@BigGameSid

I'm sorry...u just couldn't find this site when Caps won 6-0...It must be a coincidence how u dissapear when the caps play well and magically reapear when we have a bad game or someone says something about Ovie.

Posted by: capscoach | November 28, 2010 2:00 PM | Report abuse

I wonder if the Caps should sign Bill Guerin. He has scored over 20 goals the last few seasons, plays better in the playoffs, and is a good veteran leader. If the Caps sign BG, it may light a fire under Laich/Fehr/Flash, all three of which are not performing up to where they should be. He can also be a safety net if the Caps want to move Fehr and/or Flash for a blueliner and/or 2nd line center. And BG may be very motivated to make the Pens and Flyers pay for not signing him. Food for thought, Caps fans.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | November 28, 2010 2:03 PM | Report abuse

I believe that Green is in the line-up for tonight's game. I doubt the Caps make a desperation trade due to an injured Green. They stood pat on the lengthy Poti injury. I do see a Flash/Fehr trade for defenseman/center.

I have no idea who the trade involves. My guess is it would be Flash but who knows. Don't think it has anything to do with Green being hurt because I think he's playing today. And it could only be for a draft pick. I believe the Caps want to bring up Andrew Gordon as he is again lighting it up for Hershey.

Posted by: ThePat | November 28, 2010 2:18 PM | Report abuse

Dmitry just updated he believes it is a F for a D, but is waiting for 100% confirmation before he says anything more.

Posted by: ThePat | November 28, 2010 2:22 PM | Report abuse

Dmitry's a good source, but mostly a Russian one. Obviously Ovi & Varly are out, and Semin is too as far as I'm concerned. Orlov, Krurggeshv (sp?) maybe. Then again, like most trade rumors it's probably empty.

All I can say is I hope Flash is a healthy scratch today. That'd be a start.

Posted by: Justafan | November 28, 2010 2:27 PM | Report abuse

Just said it may involve a recently scratched forward...all you flash haters must be salivating.

Posted by: capscoach | November 28, 2010 2:29 PM | Report abuse

@justafan

He also just said it is a F that was scratched last game. So its Flash or King....the Xmas season is starting off on the right foot it looks like.

@BiggameSYD

You should be watching the Pitt. NBA franchise, if you're bored. After all, you are a "city of Champions". Oh, NBA realized that you're really a city of empty pockets!!!!!!!!!!

How soon until the Bucks leave town ? They are in the MIDDLE of the longest loss run in baseball history. Doesn't pro baseball go back to the Civil War ?

Caps win 5 cUps before Pirates end losing streak. Nats win 5 Series before Bucks end streak.

Why don't I ever see the Pirate "P" magnetic sticker on any of those Pens and Steelers "City of Champions" cars roaming down 95 looking for work in Washington.

I miss all of that, but the paper is in deep financial trouble. There may not be the same budget for all of that stuff Tarik was pulling off.

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | November 28, 2010 2:36 PM | Report abuse

ThePat: Some of us talked up AGordon all summer. Glad and surprised he made it through waivers. You'd think some bottom team could have used him. I think he would have made the club if not for Hendricks coming along.

BTW, Ovi should practice not shooting pucks into a dryer but into Milbury's mouth.

Flash for a defender. Bring up AG. Put Sloan on waivers and send to Hershey, then recall Fahey for an emergency. Fahey > Sloan.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | November 28, 2010 2:37 PM | Report abuse

@tom

after so few games...are use fahey>sloan? He had a few bad games too. I think it is 2 early to declare Fahey better

Posted by: capscoach | November 28, 2010 2:41 PM | Report abuse

Missed the part about the recently scratched forward. My point was that if a trade is truly imminent then the player is likely scratched today.

Than again, trade rumors are a thousand times more plentiful than trades.

Posted by: Justafan | November 28, 2010 2:44 PM | Report abuse

I could also see Fehr on the trading block. He is not having a very good year and seems to be BB's doghouse favorite. But I would still rather see Flash traded as he has been a playoff ghost.

I'm sorry.. there's this thing called Fridays & long weekend that regular folks tend to enjoy, away from their computers. Try it yourself sometime it might do you some good.

Anyway, its great that the Caps beat up a feast or famine team in Tampa. Every team in the league, even the Oilers lay a beatdown on their opponents on occasion. Does that make you feel better about the Caps' chances of winning the Cup this season?

Posted by: BigGameSid | November 28, 2010 2:56 PM | Report abuse

@BigGameSid

yup...u r right...b/c the trend of u dissapearing when the Caps play well only started this weekend.

Posted by: capscoach | November 28, 2010 3:01 PM | Report abuse

And Flash is apparently in the lineup tonight, boyd gordon is out. Green is also in. So much for the trade, at least happening today, haha.

@capscoach: Ha, thanks for the compliment (maybe?) but I'm the editor. No interest in writing. Just a little snarky blogging here and there.

I'm all ears if you or anyone has suggestions to improve our coverage -- really like feedback and it helps me decide how we do things. Send 'em my way.

Posted by: Lindsay Applebaum | November 28, 2010 3:23 PM | Report abuse

@BiggameSyd

Many of us are at our computers because we're running our daily business operations, and just "pop over" to comment.
But then again you folks never work on the weekends, that's why so many from "The Rusting Steel City" are in my office looking for work.

We work hard here, you don't. Pittsburg has a negative population growth. Ever wonderwhy ? (Too many folks enjoying long weekends and not getting that graduate degree most of the posters here have ?)

It's a mean statement, but it is the truth !!

Milbury has made ethnically charged remarks about non-Canadian players. He should have been fired after referring to the Caps as the Crapitals and to some players as "Eurotrash." He is obviously in man-love with Crosby, and will continue to make idiotic remarks about others because that is who he is. How he destroyed the once-proud Isles and put them in a 15 year hole, and is then sought as an expert analyst is beyond human comprehension. Best to ignore him, and he will continue to make an idiot of himself. Because he is an idiot.
