Ummm we actually got a thread tonight, how nice!!!
Lets go Capitals!!!

Posted by: instinct227 | October 27, 2010 7:08 PM | Report abuse

sheesh - I have to agree with whoever said the lineups should be part of the open thread. they are right on top of each other and any post to the starting lineups are almost assuredly lost to the rest of us.

So...

Can the Caps get a Staal - any Staal will do.

Apologies for the multi-thread re-post:

Just out of curiosity (and intense, overpowering anxiety), is anyone else having trouble with their CSN feed (in my case, on RCN cable in the District, HD channel) right now?

Really good energy from both teams tonight.

I got caught in the LINEUPS THREAD!

Soooo...

I like what I am seeing in this period so far.

Especially in this home opener where you know the Canes want to boost the home fans.

Nice effort.

stevie: call 1-800-RING RCN, if you haven't called yet. The more people who call, the quicker they'll fix it. I submitted a complaint for you through a friend who works there. Fingers crossed! I assume you're watching the SD channel?

They came at us HARD after that goal, but we survived.

I am, Blonde. I've had periodic trouble with my cable box, so I was unsure if it was the system or no.

decent first period

Best first period i've seen from the Caps in a while. Keep it up guys!

Posted by: aglatfelter | October 27, 2010 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Only second time we have been up at the end of one all season. If it weren't for Knuble and Fehr hitting the post we could be up three. We are going at the net a lot more tonight then in other games. I like keeping it simple in the O-zone. The goals might not make the highlight film but it puts Ws in the standings.

Posted by: icehammer97 | October 27, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

@stevie---the rcn hd for comcast isn't working for me either (dc). I called, and the guy said comcast blacked it out. I didn't believe him. Then he called me back later to say he was wrong---it's a problem with RCN. No word on when it will be fixed.

icehammer - great start - hope it carries over into the second period

Posted by: ebolean1 | October 27, 2010 8:06 PM | Report abuse

The Canes broadcast team is still saying Ward was interfered with, using that play as evidence the league needs to use replay for goalie interference.

Does anybody know the exact rule?

That sure as poop looked like the Canes goalie left his crease and created contact with a player skating horizontally in front of the goal.

Posted by: McBride33 | October 27, 2010 8:06 PM | Report abuse

@McBride33

I am far from an expert on the rules but Ward was out of the crease and I think that is a factor in the call

stevie & dccitizen: I just chatted with my friend who works there, they are working on it, but not sure how long its going to take. I'm pushing too, b/c there is nothing more frustrating than watching hockey is SD on an HDTV!

Dag RCN. DVR'd the game only to find it inoperable. Missed the first.

I'm glad to hear the first was strong because the second started slowly for the Caps. Nice shot John Carlson.

@McBride

78.5 Disallowed Goals – Apparent goals shall be disallowed by the Referee and the appropriate announcement made by the Public Address Announcer for the following reasons:

(v) When an attacking player has interfered with a goalkeeper in his goal crease.

According the the rules he has to be in his goal crease so that is why that goal counted in my mind.

woo hoo looked like a pretty solid 60 minutes from the boys tonight and Neuvy with the SO.

They are going to need the same effort tomorrow night against Minn. I saw them play LA the other night and they kept the pressure on all game.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
Ladies and gentleman we finally witness a 60 minute and VERY SOLID defensive effort with some stellar goaltending with the help of a few posts here and there.

Neuvirth - Congratulations on your first NHL shutout. Well deserved and good enough that I think Boudreau should put him in tomorrow night against Minnesota.

Backstrom - good to see him get on the scoresheet - a text book second goal when Knubs throws it at the net and oh hey looky here a rebound. :)

Solid effort. Pack the bags and on to the cold north of Minnesota. Time to tame the Wild.

It's been a two point night.

Good day in Caps land.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 27, 2010 10:26 PM | Report abuse

@CapsFan,

Yeah, it was a bit like the Cowboys-Giants Monday night game for me. Rooting for:

1) a meteor strike
2) the Lesser-of-Two-Evils

I respect the Lightning and think they're a real threat. I strongly dislike - on a hockey fan level - the Pens and the majority of their players.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | October 27, 2010 10:38 PM | Report abuse

@CapsFan75

Yeah, that was a tough one to choose from, so I was just rooting for the game to end after regulation time.

Posted by: sgm3 | October 27, 2010 10:44 PM | Report abuse

One minor play I noted that I think may indicate a change in philosophy and/or more discipline, was in the 3rd period with about 11:00 minutes remaining. The 1st line was out and had the puck behind Carolina's net for a little while and created a decent scoring opportunity.

But then Carolina regained possession. However, FOUR Caps were back and in position to play defense. They slowed down the Canes but a deflection came out and there was Ovie, as the 5th man coming back, behind the dots in the Caps zone to disrupt the rebound chance.

The defense itself by the Caps on the play wasn't that great or anything, but the fact that they were all back and made sure they were ready to play defense instead of getting caught with three guys down deep in the Carolina zone was big. It is a good sign. And this sort of play has been happening much more frequently this year and the results can be seen in the amount of goals the Caps have allowed this season(a lot less than last year so far).

Posted by: sgm3 | October 27, 2010 10:51 PM | Report abuse

Here are my thoughts:

1) Really liked the cycling the 4th line did. Think it rubbed off as I believe the 1str line was cycling too. Great to have Brads back, he laid out some good hits.

2) Neuvy continues to be #1 star in every victory. Varly's new contract gets smaller with every Neuvy win.

3) Alzner was solid. Sloan even had a decent game. Green looked in great shape from the get-go.

4) For fans of MP85 aka Mini-Me - hope this was an off game. Looks like he listened to Boudreau's fears and made them come true.

5) Knuble is about as snakebit as you can get although the primary assist might be a start.

6) The 2nd and 3rd lines did almost nothing, 3rd even less than the second. Semin was average, Perreault was less than average I thought, Laich at least put some net traffic, Flash missed his only chance, Chimera was (did he play) and even Fehr wasn't there.

7) Canes helped out by (maybe it was the ice) bobbling sefveral open shots.

Needless to say, overall, especially D and goaltending, this is an effort you'd take the rest of the year.

8) Ovechkin - he continues to play one step out of time with the action. Let's hope that ends tomorrow.

I just came back from the game. I am not as giddy as most people here. Here's some observations:
During the commercial breaks, Alz and Carlson, several times, skated around laughing and giggling, which isn't a huge deal but it tells me something about the expectations/pressure they feel to perform - not great. I played pro hockey and I could never imagine acting like that in a game situation.
Fleischmann, Thomas. A new low. I am guessing it's a confidence thing. I had glass seats and got several good glances of a face that look scared and bewildered like a dear not knowing what's left or right. It's time to seriously package him a in a trade that hopefully involves Steckel. Steck may have actually had one of his better games so far this season (keep in mind, bar is low here) but opposing players are not fooled, they know they can outskate him in a chase for the puck and they usually do. Steck's playing with zero confidence and shows very little intensity. I can liken it to playing a game with too many chugs of Nyquil.
One thing that did stand out was Alzner positioning game. It was almost (almost!) Lidstrom like. He was confident and was nearly always first on the puck or the body because he anticipated the play. Can't say the same about Carlson who seems to wait for the forward to make a play before standing up and making a move.
Neuvy, of course, was flawless. Looked like a veteran today, especially his rebound control. Outstanding.
Anyway, I hope my english 2nd language barrier didn't make this too hard of a read.

Posted by: jakopz | October 27, 2010 10:58 PM | Report abuse

Also: That Greenberg cat wrote on here yesterday on the blog that the highest percentage shots in hockey were rebounds.

Got one tonight.

Oh, and since whatever we write here seems to get copied a day or two after in BB's quotes, here's BETTING we see quotes tomorrow on solid game by Alzner. I didn't read through what everyone else wrote above but I have him as the best defenseman tonight (OK, maybe = to Green) and I put him #3 star behind Neuvy and the 4th line. Bet we also get some quotes from BB, "4th line really set the tone"..."Cycling by 4th line key to controlling road win"...etc.

Minnesota is always a solid defensive team. I kinda watched them the other night when they played the Kings. Koivu messed up a few times giving Kings PP. Didn't watch the end, but I can imagine if Caps play like tonight the results will be very good.

Having said all that, biggest difference between tonight and last week is the Canes aren't as good as Boston on offense and our goaltending was just enough better to snuff out the Canes chances until we could secure the win. Oh, that and the 4th line.

I miss cstanton. How many times did he point out how the 4th line makes the difference? And how many times did I point out how the Bradley Fighting Vehicle is worth that $1M? (OK, he didn't score, but what about those hits?)

Is anyone else watching the Sharks vs. Devils game? Joe Pavelski just came off the ice from a shift and come clown from NHLnet just shoved a mic in his face and asked him what its like to be a new dad.... really? I know he just had a new baby but seriously, that is an after game question.

Posted by: eorr53 | October 27, 2010 11:08 PM | Report abuse

I'm watching the Devils/Sharks game and am honed in on Tallinder (whom was available via UFA this summer) and I must say that he looks MUCH worse than anyone that played on our blueline this evening. He looks totally lost in his own zone. I would take Erskine over Tallinder just based on what I've seen from Tallinder tonite. We still need a top 2 Dman soon though... Sloan = #7D or Hershey Bear.

I agree tho... they could have talked to Joe about the shiny new kid afterwards...

Posted by: sca187 | October 27, 2010 11:20 PM | Report abuse

Tom, I agree with you on many of your points but I feel like the 3rd line had many fine shifts. Early in the game they had a great chance that Fehr put off the post but had an empty net to shoot at, on the backhand. There was also one shift in either the second or the third where all three of them were cycling the puck and had control of the puck in the Canes zone for a good 30-40 seconds and were wearing out the Canes players. They might not have scored but they kept the puck in the Canes zone and wore them out.

@jakopz maybe it is just me or playing more recently (don't know how long ago you were playing) but I have noticed a lot of the younger guys around the league doing something similar and I see it as a good thing for Alzner and Carlson to be loose like that. They are both being counted on bigtime this year and even more right now with Poti out for now. Yet they both feel comfortable enough in their role that they can be themselves instead of trying to be someone they are not (extra serious) and not just playing their game.

INCREDIBLE!

Jakopz and I at the same time extolling the virtues of Alzner!

I'm expecting at this point a feature article in the next day or two:
"King Karl - Is the Time Now?"

Boudreau: "We had the highest expectations for him coming out of Junior. It's just a matter of time."

George Bush Sr: "Read Boudreau's lips. Sooner rather than later we hope."

McPhee: "We had him as our primary target as he was better than anyone we had."

Let the Karl Alzner bandwagon begin. OK, we didn't get much hitting, but the positioning was solid and the zone clearing was very good. What we got tonight was a perfect example of a solid 3rd pair effort from a rookie defenseman on a team that can win. Anything he does beyond tonight's effort IMO is bonus.

@ icehammer9

You may be right and if it works, it works. I had to quit 15 years ago and I was playing in Sweden which isn't the most jovial atmosphere ;)

"During the commercial breaks, Alz and Carlson, several times, skated around laughing and giggling, which isn't a huge deal but it tells me something about the expectations/pressure they feel to perform - not great. I played pro hockey and I could never imagine acting like that in a game situation."
--------
I don't care if Karl and Carly are reading Ovie's GQ article during commercials...as long as they put down the magazine and re-focus when the whistle blows for the next faceoff. As others pointed out, Karl had a pretty good game, so cut him some slack about the "laughing and giggling."

@Tom

Let's celebrate Karl's prominence by sipping on a Tequila 30-30. Kind of like Karl. Amazing quality for the price. For now.

@jakop,

Good read - thank you for it. I'll take a little light-heartedness from a 20- and 22-year-old at this point in the season, but that's just me (and so long as Alzner plays like that).

@tomin,

I'll also take average play from two out of four lines on a given night, so long as the effort is there and other two lines are above-average. That's a win, the right way, two out of every three nights.

And I would argue that there was a bigger difference between this night and the ones against Boston: this was genuinely better effort.

My question is, is this - what we saw tonight - an effort-level and style of play that is 1) sustainable, for this group of players, and c) sufficient, for us, as fans?

(I'm still of the camp that would say no to the first clause and perhaps to the second.)

icehammer: Yes, remember that shift, Flash put the puck on the wrong side of Fehr's stick and it was a fine thing Fehr even got off a shot.

That said, they got outplayed by the 4th line.

3rd line Chimera-Flash-Fehr = $6.7M

4th line Hendricks-Steckel-Brads = $2.6M

@jakopz. I had guessed. I never played anything higher then D-III club but it was on a team that made Nationals last year, my senior season, and we were always pretty loose and the games we weren't we seemed to always play poorly. That was our probablem at Nationals we came in with a "these are the biggest games of your lives" and got killed by teams that we could have played with. We know we could play with them because during the season we beat the National Runners up but we just played tight and made mistakes because we tired to change our game.

@ tess220
Did you read the last paragraph? Alzner was easily the best player on the ice. My comment regarding the laughing and giggling goes back to my concern regarding the respect and buy-in of Bruce's system and coaching which obviously didn't work in the play offs last year. Can you imagine Toews and Kane doing the same in front of Q-Stache?

Yeah, don't get me wrong, light heartedness can be a good thing and lord knows a kid needs it who just lost his grandmom. Again, I just hope it has nothing to do with BB and taking ones spot on the roster for granted.

Posted by: jakopz | October 27, 2010 11:45 PM | Report abuse

@jakop,

Check. And I get your point about generally wanting to see the players be serious in buying into a system that - most observers would agree - could be charitably described as "light-hearted" itself.

I.e., be disciplined about your "undisciplined" system. Perhaps paradoxically, Boudreau's scheme almost certainly requires especially great discipline to work properly.

Speaking of the Sharks/NJ what is with the bounces in that game. The last two goals were both weird bounces right in front of the net with the goalie behind it.

OK, time to add some levity to this conversation......... anyone have any suggestions for a new goal song? at home of course! I am thinking The Ramones - Blitzkreig Bop as a starting point. Please feel free to comment and provide suggestions.

Karl Alzner played great because he was sound positionally throughout the game.

I've said it before and I will say it again, being sound positionally(in all facets) is the most important part of being a consistently good defenseman. Hits and being physical are nice, being very skilled is nice too. But if you want a consistency, being sound positionally is a must. Alzner is very good at that part of the game(his other qualities are not bad either).

@jakopz

Seriously. It's a game/job. Most people have the ability to laugh for a few moments here or there while at work or while playing sports and enjoy themselves, and then bring their focus back to their job. Most people are able to do this without any dropoff in work product too.

I thought it was a grandfather Alzner lost.

Anyway, to be serious for a moment, I remember when I lost mine, 10-19-97, when the finest person who ever walked on the Earth met his maker.

You have to wonder what effect this has on Karl, he's only 21 or so, I was 40 when it happened to me, the other grandfather having passed before I was born.

And then Karl comes out and has his (IMO) best game.

re: Stevie's numbers...I am fond of in a meeting holding up three fingers and saying, "We have two choices..."

Really freaks em out.

One of the best movies ever made, "Red River," on PLEX right now. BB ought to make the boys watch. Maybe they could change the name to "Rock the Red River."

We'll still need at least 2 goalies all the way through.
But I have a sneaking suspicion that when all is said & done Neuvy may be here for awhile.

sgm: You'll note please for posterity that I was FIRST ON THE BLOG to point out Alzner's very good game, and made no qualifier on the fact that it was positional. He was simply, in my first write-up, "solid."

And, here's another thing, I will be the first to point this out, I'll best no one else has, and I'll bet this comment gets echoed somewhere (aren't I full of myself?), but that boarding call on Alzner was the MEANEST thing he's done since he came into the NHL.

Good for him.

I'm betting young King Karl is quite pleased with himself on the flight to the Twin Cities. Meanwhile I'm feeling quite pleased with myself too. But now I'm noticing that the bottle of Spanish Red is empty (Gads! I drank red wine on a road game and they won!). What to do?

Long range plans have Buffalo chicken wings tomorrow night. Think I'll be having the local Aqua Dulce Vineyards Rose to go with those wings and with Caps vs Wild at 5 pm here in socal.

(By God but John Wayne is meaner in "Red River" than John Erskine defending a hit on Neuvy.)

Now, finally, speaking of socal, we have like 20-30 mph winds thru the canyon here and like 50 tonight and maybe mid-70s tomorrow and it is as pleasant as you can get.

I realize it isn't tomorrow here but it's tomorrow there and realizing further those chicken wings haven't been cooked for tomorrow's dinner but tonight's wine is gone so I think I'm popping that bottle of rose for tomorrow and have some of it now.

Slash made a big deal about "It's five o'clock somewhere" but you heard it from tominsocal1 first "It's a minute after midnight somewhere."

People who wait for 5 pm to judge their accomplishments have left 17 hours to waste.

Just popped open that bottle of rose (make fun if you want).

Anyhow, how bout that play where Matt Bradley touches up the puck to negate the icing and the linesman calls icing anyway and Brads motions "WTF?" and then the ref comes over to the linesman and says,

"What are you looking at? Have you had more to drink than tominsocal1?" and then they reverse the call and have the faceoff at center ice?

For me, they should record that as a "Great Moment in Hockey" while I record it as a "Great Moment in Drinking."

BTW, don't know who that ref was, but he can order one on me.

Well, he!!, Stevie, I hadn't read through all the posts, but I see yours now, at 9:11, extolling Alzner when I was just thinking about it.

Guess the lead wagon train on the bandwagon is under your command!

By God how good it feels after 14 years in Florida and now in SoCal with all the windows open in the upstairs bedroom and cool, dry Santa Ana air blowing into the room! By GOD but it feels like that ice rink in the back yard in Detroit when I was a kid!

The only feeling in the world that could be better is Caps play just like tonight tomorrow and tame the Wild in Minnesota!

I have the lead, tomin. And in my world, it's a division of Marine CH-53s.

I think we were all noticing Alzner's positioning, but I, too, noticed the boarding and enjoyed its significance. Happy to echo you. Enjoy the wine and the night.

Stevie. Well. My hat's off to you. All of them. I have been in this business since 79 but whatever we do here only pales in comparison to those we serve. To you and yours I can only hope and pray for the absolute best and to thank God you are there.

Thanks for saying so, tomin. My near-decade of time is relatively recently done (didn't mean to mislead on that account), but I'll accept your appreciation willingly and on the behalf of those for whom I feel comfortable doing so.

I'm still a Marine and 53 driver at heart (with my call-sign intact in my Post User ID). Probably went to my first Caps game not long after falling in love with flying . . .
