Crosby should listen to his parents, for the Caps' sake.

FYI for online streamers per WashCaps FB page:
NBC will be streaming the Game of the Week online this Sunday for free. Head over to WashingtonCaps.com before the game to grab the link.

...And here are tonight's Rooting Instructions (Friday, March 11):

CAR (72) @ WAS (86): What once was ours is ours again. It must not be taken from us again. Go CAPS!!!.
BOS (85 points) @ NYI (62 points): 8th seed BUF moved into the 7th spot by defeating BOS last night, and--while this isn't saying much--the Isles are playing some of their best hockey this season. Time to take advantage of a tired and distracted Bruins squad. Go Isles.
LAK (79) @ CBJ (71): Just when we thought things were starting to sort out in the West; What was once a 5 point spread between the 4th and 11th spots is now only a 4 point margin. Kings are currently clinging to 8th spot by a single point. Go Jackets.
EDM (54) @ DET (86): Not much hope for the Oil in this one. Still... Go Oilers.
NJD (64) @ ATL (67) : NJD almost certainly won't make the playoffs. ATL probably won't. Go Devils.
OTT (57) @ TBL (84): I know it isn't likely, but TBL seems to be in somewhat of a tailspin right now, going only 4-4-2 in their last 10. Unless Clouston has been instructed to tank the rest of the season for draft picks (they'd still have to catch EDM), this could be interesting. Go Sens!.
MIN (77) @ DAL (80): Though mathematically still in the hunt (only 2 points out of 8th) it seems unlikely that MIN will make the playoffs. But I still hate Dallas. Go Wild.
ANA (77) @ COL (60): Colorado is a wreck; Anaheim not much better...not much of interest here. Go Avalanche

If the current status quo holds through the end of the regular season, Caps face BUF.

P.S: This isn't really intended as a prediction--only a reflection of my situational prejudices and fickle support for any teams other than the Caps (always), Flames (most of the time) and other Canadian teams (except for MTL). It is for your enlightenment and amusement.

I know everybody is excited about the 6-game winning streak and understandably so but the Caps still need to take their game to another level if they want to be a team that can contend with the big dogs in a playoff environment. Don't let that shellacing of EDM fool you even if EDM was playing well recently.

And the Caps needs to push to find that level before the playoffs start. I still doubt they have the personnel to get there so maybe I'm expecting too much.

Bad move by BB to start Holtby. When Varly gets healthy who gets sent down? They need Neuvarth to stay sharp because when Varly does come back, he will injure himself at practice within 5 games.

wgoodm01

Not true. We already established that many of the young goalies get injured or are inconsistent until they get more experience. Neuvy has been sick as well and Holtby was out for over a month. I am for Varly and Holtby unless we can keep all three of them for a while. But BB is right to keep testing Holtby. This is the only chance he has to test his consistency so he will know what he really has to work with at the playoffs.

Posted by: caraveli | March 11, 2011 8:09 PM | Report abuse

About 20 shots against and we aren't even halfway through the 2nd and most of the shots have come at even strength.

Semin just drifting through this game. All it takes sometimes is one half-asser to infect his teammates with laziness.

We've been hemmed into our end too much in this game but at least we're doing well to keep things to the outside and getting good goaltending (other than some bad rebounds).

And the PK has obviously been strong.

Posted by: Section416akatheAlps | March 11, 2011 8:20 PM | Report abuse

My goodness, was that Semin that left that guy wide open in front of the net there?

He made a nice strip moments later but that may have been his guy parked in front of the net just earlier. Not sure. Either way, somebody should've been on him for sure.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 11, 2011 8:21 PM | Report abuse

I'm probably the biggest Varly fan around but if Holtby keeps playing like this, he's gonna be playing for the Caps in the playoffs.

Mike Vogel pointed out on espn980 earlier this week that neither Varly nor Neuvy has shown that they can play a ton of games at any point in their young career. The only one of the three who has done that so far is Holtby.

Posted by: joek443 | March 11, 2011 8:24 PM | Report abuse

I hope the 3rd or 4th line scores a goal tonight. They've been our best lines.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 11, 2011 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Well, somebody on the 3rd line blew it there.

The 4th line has been strong all game at least.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 11, 2011 8:36 PM | Report abuse

carolina's forecheck, imo, has been the big difference in the game so far. caps are gonna need to do a much better job getting the puck out of their own zone if they want to tie this game

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | March 11, 2011 8:43 PM | Report abuse

So I guess sticking your asscheeks in the goalies face is not goaltender interference.

Posted by: Ve1ostrummer | March 11, 2011 8:44 PM | Report abuse

_____________________

I agree with you & Vogel. This is why my solution is Varly & Holtby. I would love for Holtby to play for a long stretch (which may be what BB plans after all). If he maintains this kind of calm consistency over a stretch, I would say he is our man for the time being. I think it is a matter of time before Varly's brilliant side comes out on a more consistent basis. But I do agree that neither Neuvy nor Varly have demonstrated the stamina needed for long stretches.

Maybe that'll wake the team up. They haven't been terrible but they've been a bit flat. Not enough of a compete level.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 11, 2011 8:58 PM | Report abuse

So what's going on? No comments, analysis or projections? I thought we did okay but did not find a common rythm the way we do when we are on fire.

My two most frustrating moments:

1. when Ovie was perfectly positioned to score (I think in the first period)--right on top of the net--and for some inexplicable reason, he passed the puck to whoever was behind him. At least he has made up for it.
2. When Semin passed the puck to Carlson (2nd period) at a perfect angle, sure to score--and Carlson stupidly missed it.

I so hope we carry the momentum from Ovie's goal and win. Will we?

Meh... a lot of players took this game too casually, obviously not including the 4th line or Wideman and some others.

Some of these next few games will be interesting and not just as far as winning or losing but how well we compete and do the little things. We can't spend this much time in our end against some of these teams.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 11, 2011 9:32 PM | Report abuse

And Corvo never played a game in his end as well as Wideman did tonight. He was largely excellent. Much, much better player than Corvo strictly based on the performance of the two players while with the Capitals. I hope Wideman can keep it up.

Holtby
Ovechkin
Hmm! Cam Ward? Hendricks?

Posted by: caraveli | March 11, 2011 9:40 PM | Report abuse

I caught some of Spezza the other night against NJ. He was outstanding offensively and defensively. I'd still be more than happy if we could acquire him for the right package centered around you know who. I don't mind his contract and think it's manageable, esp. when you consider that so many want you know who around for the long run. Similar price range and Spezza would likely be very movable if we wanted to trade him for any reason before the end of his current contract. Again, it's not cuz I don't like you know who; I just think we have greater needs up the middle. If you like Arnott, Spezza is a far better player.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 11, 2011 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Corvo should ask for double pay. I think he logged 59:59 of ice time.

BTW, I still don't like 1st line out there in the last 30 seconds but that's the way Bruce "the stat padder" Boudreau chooses to coach. I sure home that doesn't bite him in the b@11s at the worst possible time.

Great game though. Exciting. We let them control much of the last 10 minutes, but face it - they were desperate. And for the second straight game, we get the lucky break on the washed out goal. That stuff usually evens out over the course of the season.

Yet when Varly comes back, Holtby is going back to Hershey. And nothing he or Neuvarth does will change BB's love of Varly. You have to pick a goalie for the playoffs and prepare him the last 15 games. If it's Holtby, fine. He should start the rest of the season. Will BB do this? NO.

41 shots against is way too many, esp. considering that the vast majority came at even strength. That doesn't include the tons of shots we blocked, which in and of itself, is a good thing. We've been outshotblocking teams a lot recently which I don't believe was the case very often in the recent past.

In general, CAR spent way too much time in our end over the course of the game even though we largely did a good job of keeping them outside and limiting the quality chances.

Carlson with 5 BS.

Alzner with 4.

Gordon with 4!

Erskine with 3.

Wideman with 2.

I'm typicallhy not that much concerned with faceoffs but we lost in that area tonight against one of the worst faceoff teams in the league.

Hits were about even. We only had 19 total. We should be a lot more physical than that against a team like CAR.

Semin with 3 takeaways and 0 giveaways but I thought he largely had a terrible, lackluster game. Giveawyas don't include all kinds of turnovers which he had several of in bad areas in this game. Despite 2 or 3 high skill plays, he was largely a drifter in this one.

Holtby was good and bad. The team D limited the high quality chances despite the high number of shots against. He made some very good saves but his rebound control was sketchy and he nearly got caught behind his net one time early in the game.

Wideman was great.

The 4th line was great.

The Islanders beat the Bruins, Ottawa beats Tampa, and . . . I started typing too soon. ("the Oilers beat Detroit, AT Joe Louis.")

Regardless, you gotta come to play every night in the NHL, or you will get beat (or at least be taken to overtime).

Crap... seconds away from a shootout between DET and EDM. I wanted to see Omark and Datsyuk try to work some magic.

Joecc I feel the same way. I love Varly and I appreciate the games he has been big in, but I is Neuvy always the odd man out when Holtby is playing well. Varly is never healthy and has had some bad playoff games. Neuvy has looked great when hes in, and was on a very strong run before this Holtby magic. If the playoffs started tomorrow, I would want Neuvy starting.

Why no love for Neuvy??
-------------------------------------------

He's a solid goalie but I don't think he'll ever be an elite goalie in the NHL.

Both Varly and Holtby have more upside. The Blackhawks had Belfour and Hasek and they settled on Belfour who was more "solid" than Hasek.

Did they make the right choice??

I like Neuvy. It's not like I am dying to get rid of him the way I was with Theo (though Theo seems to be doing well now and I am happy for him). It's just that I believe Holtby may be better and I would like to test him. Neuvy for me falls in between Holtby and Varly. Varly has explosiveness and raw talent but he has not yet proven that he can be relied upon to for long stretches. Holtby, if he were to keep up this pace, seems to be really even-keeled, strong and aggressive. Neuvy is slightly edged out by Varly on raw talent and has not shown himself to be a rock of consistency. He has also had illnesses and injuries and cannot play on his highest level for long stretches. Granted Holtby has not been tested that long. I am only going on the games he has played for us.

Look at these incredible stats

Mar 11 '11 CAR @ WSH W 1 41 40 .976 0 0 Mar 09 '11 EDM @ WSH W 0 22 22 1.000 1 Mar 07 '11 WSH @ TBL W 0 21 21 1.000 0 Jan 24 '11 NYR @ WSH O 1 29 28 .966 0 0
Jan 22 '11 WSH @ TOR W 1 36 35 .972 0 0

His NHL total is 93.4

But I love all 3 and consider us very lucky to have them.

And while we pick over the details, the players get on with their lives....

Alex Ovechkin
Good game...now time to eat...

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
A workmanlike effort - good jump yet running around at times but signs of a desperate Carolina team too.

OVIE: Back in the zone nice shot.

HOLTBY: Another rock solid performance and some folks need to stop hating on Neuvy. He can take this team to the Cup. He did it twice in the AHL and can do it up here. Holtby is the hotter goalie at the moment. We shall see what happens. A good problem to have :)

HENDRICKS: Kids take note that's why you always follow up on a breakaway. Clutch goal.

REFEREES: Sorry I'm calling this crew out tonight for the horrible ticky tack calls earlier in the game. A joke but FANTASTIC job by the PKers. I think 4 of their pp opportunities didn't register a shot.

JOB WELL DONE!!!! Tampa goes down - even better. Time to keep this thing going. It gets more difficult and time to dig in even more.

Bring on the Blackhawks. It's been a two point night.

ICE BREAKERS GOAL SHAKERS!!!!

Another great job tonight. #winning already saw a bunch of #HOLTBY jerseys in the stands. #caps fans are on top of their game

Why no love for Neuvy?? The kid has won 2 Calder Cups. Varly hasn't won a darn thing and Holtby is a work in progress.

-----------------

Dare I say, ahem, favoritism? Did Neuvy win any of those Calders with BB as coach? I didn't think so. Neuvy has been the glue between the pipes this year, but he'll be thrown by the wayside soon enough (as will #4, the glue of the backline).

But hey, SEVEN in a row is seven in a row and BRING ON CHICAGO....WE'LL SCALP THEM BLACKHAWKS, TOO!!

I was at the game, so I got a different perspective.

We need to fix our power play. Ovi has one at home power play goal. That needs to change starting tomorrow or we have NO shot.

Canes seemed to have the puck around our goal tender a lot of the night. At times we got out-hustled. Hate be negative, but this was a Holtby and Hendricks GRIT win !
How did the Canes let Arnott pop out of the box behind their D ?

I liken the Varlamov, Neuvirth, Holtby dilemma more to the Dafoe, Kolzig, Carrey choice. The team ended up making the right decision there.

They have at least another season maybe two before they really have to make the choice, in my opinion.

I think it is still too early to tell who is the best of the 3, but in this case, I think that all 3 are capable of being good NHL starters. I don't think any of them are a Brodeur, though, but who knows. I personally am rooting for Holtby, if only because my son has an autographed Holtby sweater from his first rookie camp, who knows how much that could end up being worth.

You hate to be negative? Ha, that's funny.

@timeforacup

What's funny is that you GMGM Rah ! Rah !boys think that McPhee has put together a Cup winner. Carolina out played us tonight, and they're not that good.

Let's see what happens when the "real season" starts. Getting "out hustled" in front of a sell out doesn't portend well for the play offs. Isn't that kinda' what happened in game 5 at home against the "sickly lookin' Slovak net minder".

40 shots, and some of them were very high quality chances. So, Holtby had to stand on his head, or we lose 4-1. That's the real story ! Don't tell me about the Oilers game. Geez, they suck !!

if halak didn't stand on his head - caps oust the habs in 5! *sarcasm*

it took 19 caps to beat the canes - not just holtby

@Hunter: Far from a GMGM fan here but I've liked and hated moves he's made in the past. This year - he addressed needs that are paying off. This was one game tonight. Don't forget Carolina is desperate for points. I'm not surprised they had the Caps scrambling at times tonight. Holtby did make a ton of a big saves otherwise it most likely is a 4-1 game but the Caps had their chances and had their moments of keeping Carolina on their heels too. Sure the Canes had more shots. It happens.

I give credit for the moves McPhee made because - at this moment - they look like just the intangibles needed that could help this team push for a Cup this year. Only time will tell. Let's not forget that the Caps win another game with Backstrom and Green on the shelf too.

The real story is this was a gritty back and forth effort and the Caps goalie kept them in it and they took advantage of it and won. EVERY team will have those kind of games.

This is a resilient Caps team. It's ok to be critical but make sure you give credit as well. It works both ways. :)

@Jonathan6

I can gree with most of what you said. Arnott was a huge addition, because he plays "play off hockey". Still don't think the Canes are that good of a club.

@capt

What's your point ? Halak didn't get close to the Cup. Flyers ate him for lunch (for you, sgm3) You can't rely on a rookie net minder to stand on his head to win a Cup. Team needs to start snarling like it is serious about a Cup !

Crosby may be done for the season. A huge door just opened with no Shrek. Let's start playing like we want to win the Bowl. We got out played. Canes are just a shadow of their Cup team. Should not have been this close, this close to the play offs !
