nice feed by fehr - good stick handling by marcus to get the goal

8 needs to minimize the ill-advised passes through bodies and sticks as well as the bad angle shots. They effectively become turnovers moe often than not and usually turn into oddman rushes the other way.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 28, 2010 5:21 PM | Report abuse

About 4 or 5 bad decisions with and without the puck by Ovechkin less than 12 min into the game.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 28, 2010 5:26 PM | Report abuse

OV has been the king of turnovers all year long. I don't understand it.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | November 28, 2010 5:32 PM | Report abuse

Gotta love our checking line(s) this year.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 28, 2010 5:36 PM | Report abuse

beautiful

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 28, 2010 5:37 PM | Report abuse

semin is on fire - ovi made that whole play by coming in under control

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 28, 2010 5:38 PM | Report abuse

What a play!

Posted by: LloydChristmas | November 28, 2010 5:38 PM | Report abuse

Nice play by 8 there but it came after a wild shot by 28 that led to a Carolina 3-on-2 with Ovechkin late to recognize his positioning on the backcheck.

I'm not saying to never take wide angle shots but the shooter, in particular, as well as his linemates have to recognize the positioning of their teammates in those situations.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 28, 2010 5:41 PM | Report abuse

another good 20 minutes - i'm liking it

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 28, 2010 5:41 PM | Report abuse

tmac: That wasn't just a "nice" play by Ovechkin.

It was world-class exceptional, that pass.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | November 28, 2010 5:54 PM | Report abuse

Yikes... horrible collective play in our own end.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 28, 2010 5:58 PM | Report abuse

Semin = soap on a rope

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 28, 2010 6:10 PM | Report abuse

I would like to see some more shots by the caps... thank you :)

Posted by: vm114 | November 28, 2010 6:20 PM | Report abuse

I'd like to put out an apb for the first period Caps -- have been missing since the horn sounded at the end of the first. Chief suspects -- Fehr and Flash.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | November 28, 2010 6:20 PM | Report abuse

Calling all cars -- an APB on the Cap's forecheck. Last seen, end of period 1. Wanted for questioning -- Fehr, E. and Flash.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | November 28, 2010 6:23 PM | Report abuse

Pretty much all Carolina in that period. We got heavily outworked but kind of weathered the storm with not a lot of push back. Let's see if they can bring it in the 3rd.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 28, 2010 6:32 PM | Report abuse

Pretty much all Carolina in that period.
Posted by: tmac2yao | November 28, 2010 6:32 PM

i think it was more 50/50 - i didn't expect the canes to lay down and roll over - but it was far from all carolina

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 28, 2010 6:48 PM | Report abuse

Nope, it continues.

Total puck possession by Carolina. Still outworking us. Still completely tilting the ice.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 28, 2010 6:56 PM | Report abuse

Green got away with one there.

Meanwhile, the Carolina hockey clinic continues...

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 28, 2010 6:58 PM | Report abuse

Can we get 1 PP?

...just 1?

AND HOW ABOUT VARLY NOT MISSING A BEAT IN HIS RETURN!

I like the fact that these goalies are tightening up the screws on each other by playing well.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 28, 2010 7:04 PM | Report abuse

FINALLY A PP!?!?!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 28, 2010 7:06 PM | Report abuse

Come on Caps, put this one in the books with a PP goal, preferably from OV

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | November 28, 2010 7:08 PM | Report abuse

Lotta non calls for holding going on.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | November 28, 2010 7:18 PM | Report abuse

The checking lines were terrific on their last 2 shifts.

Backstrom with some nice defensive plays as well.

Schultz barely got to that puck on the icing call a few shifts ago despite having 2 or 3 steps on the Cane player.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 28, 2010 7:21 PM | Report abuse

Lotta non calls for holding going on.

Posted by: LloydChristmas | November 28, 2010 7:18 PM

agreed, non calls in general

we should have had the man advantage at least 3 times in this game.

Yuck

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | November 28, 2010 7:24 PM | Report abuse

Hate to say it but they deserved it. Outplayed us heavily in the final 2 frames, esp. in the 2nd.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 28, 2010 7:24 PM | Report abuse

Really?
That should never happen...

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 28, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Agreed, the Caps stopped skating after the end of the first. Just the same inconsistent effort. I just don't see a playoff team here.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | November 28, 2010 7:27 PM | Report abuse

IF FREAKIN STECKEL WINS THAT DRAW MAYBE GREEN DOESNT HAVE TO BLOCK THAT SHOT AND RISK BEING INJURED!

THATS THE MAIN REASON WHY WE SIGNED STECKS, TO WIN KEY DRAWS!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 28, 2010 7:31 PM | Report abuse

Beauty save, Varly, but where was the defense?

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | November 28, 2010 7:32 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 28, 2010 7:24 PM | Report abuse

Heavily outplayed? We outshot them in all three periods. Not saying shots are the end all be all of who is outplaying who but we weren't greatly outplayed in either period we just didn't put the puck in the net. I don't know who put you in such a bad mood today but it is getting old. It seems not matter what Ovechkin does you find something wrong and then when he makes a great play you act like it was not that great of a play.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 28, 2010 7:33 PM | Report abuse

as someone said, there were A LOT of non-calls at the end of the game. sure looked liked ovi got tripped there at the end of the game. oh well.

shootout time.

Posted by: natresgroup | November 28, 2010 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Who said anything about OV? I hoped he had scored on the PP, but that was about all I have seen. And glad to see Green back in the game.

Good to see Green back on the bench.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 28, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Nice shot OV and great saves Varly. I wish the Caps had handled a 2 goal lead from the first, but better than a poke in the eye.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | November 28, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

1st off...what was with the officiating??? think they had money on Carolina

@tmac2yao

I don't think they outplayed us...neither team had many chances in the 2nd and 3rd. I thought it was a decent game by us.

question: did MaJo play in the 3rd? I feel like he wasn't out there.

Posted by: capscoach | November 28, 2010 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Ok, did not look up enough. I thought OV was good, his assist was stellar, and he created good chances. Ward was very good tonight. The Caps seemed to let up in the second, but not the top line. Laich and Alzner-Carlson were also good. Knubs, Fehr, and Flash were liabilities tonight, imho.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | November 28, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

I know people will say that this was a stinker by the Caps, but it really wasn't.

We had 40 SOG to their 28..pretty impressive to keep a team unde 30SOG when you have a full OT and they had 3 PPs to our 1.

Posted by: capscoach | November 28, 2010 7:46 PM | Report abuse

@JIMALLCAPS

agreed...Fash, Fehr, and Knuble need to step up.

everyone else...Ovie played ok today! He didn't make any horrific plays and had some nice chances and a beautiful assist. It is natural to notice every single mistake a guy like Ovie makes, but it really prevents u from seeing him with perspective. he had an adequate game.

Posted by: capscoach | November 28, 2010 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Jesus H. Kee-Rist. What's up with the negativity? TMac - did you down like a case of goat's blood during this one?

Caps play upbeat hockey and people say they take too many chances. Caps play conservative hockey and people say boring hockey. It was a very BORING game! What's wrong with that? Caps had this one in hand. Canes had very few good chances and NO ODD MAN BREAKS! Keeeeeeeeeeee-Rist!

I like Caps style of play tonight much better than those wide open games. Caps had three great chances and got two goals. Nothing wrong with that.

Where the he!! is Jonathan with his wrap up?

IT'S BEEN A TWO-POINT NIGHT!

Icebreakers, goalshakers, whatever!

BE HAPPY! And lay off the goat's blood tmac! :)

Varly should get one of the stars this week. 3-0 1.33 gaa.

Posted by: Dizruption | November 28, 2010 8:18 PM | Report abuse

OK, I want a show of hands. I have been all over the BB style since last year, along with others. My opinion is Caps are transitioning to the style that is more appropriate for the Playoffs. Tonight was a good example. Do you need to beat them 6-0 every night? No! Tonight we played well enough, conservatively, to win, only they got the tying goal with 2 secs left.

Anyone who has criticized Caps style of play as too hectic...how can you now criticize this? Was it perfect? No! But wtf do you expect?

Someone posted "Oh, I guess if Caps don't win 6-0 every game people will criticize." And I responded, "No! We just want the effort!" Tonight the effort was fine. A very nice, Red Wings type effort good enough to take the game. A mature effort from a mature team. Did you see Brads wasting time with 2:45 left? Go back and look. They played Smart hockey if not perfect hockey.

Did anyone in the audience see any glaring mistakes or turnovers by the Caps? When's the last time anyone saw a dumb turnover?

It just seems like some people won't EVER be pleased!

Actually the Caps tonight played "Road" hockey - boring and conservative. And they won. Not bad, just boring.

I'll take it. It's been a two-pt night for chrissake!

Anyone who doesn't like my opinion:

well they let them tie it up with 2 ticks left and it ended in a tie - I refuse to acknowledge SO wins or losses - it's a friggin' tie as far as I'm concerned.

maybe it's a little better than kissing your sis tie but not by much.

BTW what the heck happened with that russian guy and his trade rumours???

Red Wings- Blue Jackets Game at Detroit tonight. Detroit wore white. Anyone know if the home team wearing dark rule has changed?

Posted by: fehrrocks | November 28, 2010 8:29 PM | Report abuse

Big Buff might just win the Norris trophy this year if he can keep up the pace, that would be very cool... he may turn out to be a better D-man than Keith or Seabrook.

Posted by: joek443 | November 28, 2010 8:39 PM | Report abuse

@fehrrocks. Was Detroit wearing the throwback off whites? A lot of times I see home teams wearing third jerseys. If they are white, the away team dresses accordingly.

Where the hell is johnathan's wrap up?

Posted by: LloydChristmas | November 28, 2010 8:47 PM | Report abuse

joek: They "let them tie?"

Did you see Caps players during that last faceoff motioning to the goal like we'd give the Canes a score?

Look, Staal outmuscled Poti. Some of have pointed out for a year and a half how Poti couldn't push Crosby out of the crease, much less Staal. Some of ud have pointed out for years how we need a d man to throw on the ice last minute when up by one who can stop other team from doing that.

But "Let them tie it?"

Let's give the Canes some credit. Some of us forget there are two teams in every game and we can't just say that win or lose the final result is purely, 100% dictated by the Caps' effort.

Hey, it's been a TWO-POINT NIGHT!

Posted by: tominsocal1 | November 28, 2010 8:47 PM | Report abuse

@tominsocal1 I'M HERE I'M HERE HAHAHAHAHAHAHH Saw your post and couldn't help but crack up. I didn't see any of the game as I had to work.

From what it sounds like - it was a strong start to the game with maybe a bit of a letup but a pretty good defensive game even though they managed to sneak one in at the end to tie it up and steal a point. Won't make a difference.

I did see the Varly stop in OT - beauty. Nice to see Varly coming back strong.

Some of the posts on here - you people really need to chill. Take two and call me in the morning. Seriously - it's a long season folks. It was nice tight game the Caps deserved the 2-1 win but still got 2 points indeed. It's not like this was a 6-4 game. Nice to see the team tighten it up. Now lighten up.

TIME FOR THE TEAM TO HIT THE ROAD JACK FOR TWO BIG GAMES.

Time to beat up Halak and get St. Louis singing the Blues on Wednesday.

It's been a two point night.

ICE BREAKERS GOAL SHAKERS :)

@LloydChristmas - it's posted :) Haha even though I didn't see much until the end of the game in OT and SO.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | November 28, 2010 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Had a great time at the game with my daughter. The Caps totally owned the first; I give the second to the Canes, and an edge to the Caps fin the third. the Canes were working like mad to take this one and the Caps held steady. Great effort by Varly. Ovi had it going through much of the game, and Flash could've put it away. What's with the refs in the third? Varly was a beast. Wonderful to win again. Tough to give up the late tying goal, but the better team won tonight for sure.

-----------------

That whole sequence of play was doomed from the beginning when Steckel lost the faceoff CLEAN... his calling card as an NHL player is exactly NOT to let those things happen.

Anyone can lose faceoffs but you simply cannot lose them clean like that with just a few seconds left in the game... tie the guy up, wrestle him, hick-stick him, punch him in the gut, take a penalty or do whatever you have to do but do NOT lose them clean like that ever again if you wanna keep your job STECKEL!!!

Posted by: joek443 | November 28, 2010 9:14 PM | Report abuse

@Jonathan6

Haha, thanks man. What can I say, I look forward to your wrap ups, whether you see the game or not. :)

Posted by: LloydChristmas | November 28, 2010 9:22 PM | Report abuse

@ joek443

be reasonable! you can make a valid case that Steckel is not that useful and way overpaid (I agree), but even the best players will lose a faceoff at an exceptionally bad time...it happens. He didn't do anything horribly irresponsible. It happens to ALL players

Posted by: capscoach | November 28, 2010 9:28 PM | Report abuse

joek443: What in God's name do you do for a living? You are perfect every time? Are you suggesting Steckel can win evry facoff at will? Just because it's important 7 seconds left you think the way the linesman drops the puck has no say in the matter? And the way the Canes player takes the draw has no say?

Jonathan: Great to see your wrap up post, always makes me feel better. Some people obviously wouldn't be happy getting a BeeZay from Mrs Claus while Santa stuffed their stocking!

(Reminds me of the old joke, how come Mrs Claus never had any kids, because Santa always comes down the chimney har-har and how come Mrs Clean never had any kids, cuz Mr Clean always comes in a bottle har-har.)

Anyway...anyone wanna talk Big Buff? What great moves by Atlanta. First they dump Kovy on that dump in North Jersey and then they load up on ex-Hawks. Who is their GM? Someone from Detroit? Waddell? I can't remember, but GM of the year right there.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | November 28, 2010 9:31 PM | Report abuse

@ capscoach

I said anyone can lose faceoffs, happens to the best of them.

HOWEVER you simply cannot not lose defensive zone faceoffs CLEAN like that with 7 seconds left in the game protecting an one goal lead.

And Staal sucks in faceoffs, they even had him playing wing last year because he's not any good at it.

Posted by: joek443 | November 28, 2010 9:35 PM | Report abuse

I see that some of you people have trouble understanding English so I will repeat what I said.

1. It's okay to lose faceoffs

2. HOWEVER it's NOT okay to lose them CLEAN like Steckel did tonight under those circumstances... you ask any hockey coach, he'll tell you the exact same thing.

Posted by: joek443 | November 28, 2010 9:38 PM | Report abuse

"you simply cannot not lose defensive zone faceoffs CLEAN like that with 7 seconds left in the game protecting an one goal lead."

sometimes they simply can and sometimes they simply do

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 28, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

@tominsocal1

Agree that today's game looked like a playoff style game in many ways. Sorry the Caps ended up getting tied at the very end of regulation.

But at least they won in the shootout. In many ways, this was the type of game they would have lost last year where they would get tied in the closing seconds of regulation and then lose it in OT or shootout. (Example: Columbus game)

Posted by: CapsFan75 | November 28, 2010 9:42 PM | Report abuse

A hockey game broke out during the Texans/Titans game this afternoon, vicious punches thrown...

Posted by: joek443 | November 28, 2010 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Capt Kirk: Well, now my feelings are hurt. joek443 says I "have trouble understanding English." Boy, and I never realized!

You know, I can almost empathize with joek here, cuz just as they were about to drop the puck I said, "Seven seconds left! Cheat if you have to! Gouge their eyes out!"

And then the Canes score and mrstominsocal1 asks what I meant by the eye-gouging comment and I said with seven seconds left you can cheat and tackle the other team because as long as they don't score, the penalties don't come to roost.

And mrstominsocal1 (she's a communist I tell you!) said Caps deserved to give up goal due to my eye-gouging comment!

(BTW I just got her back as I turned down the heat and didn't tell her!)

The bottom line is Steckel is a good face-of guy but no way can you win every draw.

joek: Read any Hemingway lately?

@LloydChristmas - my pleasure my friend. Glad they got the win.

@Jonathan6

Now all the Caps need to do is to figure out how to win in a park they never win in against a goalie they consistently have trouble with.

(Okay, time for the Caps to view video on how the Flyers beat Montreal in the Eastern Conference Finals.)
