Check Out Washington's New Jersey

Okay, so it was the leaked one after all. Check it out here. I'm not sure why the red one is being shown with the online story, because I'm pretty sure the white one is going to be in tomorrow's paper. At least that was the plan when I left the office.

I bet a lot of the folks who didn't like the leaked one are going to like this one, now that they get to see the real colors.

Sweetness. I can't wait to see the white jersey and how the full uni looks on the guys.

I can't believe people seriously thought it orange

Posted by: Graham | June 21, 2007 10:15 PM | Report abuse

Well, I'm interested to see how it'll look with the pants.

It'll take time to get use to it.

Posted by: Go Skins Go | June 21, 2007 10:18 PM | Report abuse

I have to say, I was one of the nay-sayers when I first saw the leaked images. The colors in the WP's picture as well as the presentation on a human make a big difference. The colors look great. But I think the front logo, while traditional, is a little two dimensional. Would have liked to see something more intriguing with a higher "wow" factor.

It's encouraging that they spent a lot of time with this design to make sure it was legible via TV camera, which should also translate to better legibility of the numbers in the arena too.

Question: Do we know what color helmets they will wear with the Red and White unis?

Posted by: Ted | June 21, 2007 10:20 PM | Report abuse

Looks better than that crummy flash intro. I'd still like to know how it would've looked had they gone with the Eagle Crest as the main logo

Posted by: Cush | June 21, 2007 10:31 PM | Report abuse

Too much red and the blue is so dark it looks black...but better than expected. Not sure if I'll be putting down the cash to buy one though--I think I'll stick with my "old school" jersey and leave the new one for the cool kids to wear.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 21, 2007 10:49 PM | Report abuse

What an amazingly intricate process - 3 years! - for what is essentially the old logo in a different font.

I think it's not bad - not jaw-dropping, but not bad - just amazing that they seem to think they put so much thought and effort into something that's really very basic.

Posted by: katzistan | June 21, 2007 11:08 PM | Report abuse

I don't know if anyone noticed, but the capitol dome is not completely gone. The underside of the eagle has the outline of the capitol dome.

Posted by: its okay | June 21, 2007 11:22 PM | Report abuse

I still have to see the whole uniform. but I am not all to impressed. For one, I wish that we had a logo on the front of the jersey instead of just words. Also i was hoping that the jersey would be blue. The new jersey has very little blue in it.

It doesn't wow me, but I like it fine.

Posted by: false_cause | June 22, 2007 12:08 AM | Report abuse

the 'w' eagle and the silhouette dome on the shoulder are pretty cool

Posted by: ngu | June 22, 2007 12:15 AM | Report abuse

Looks good - in my mind it's definitely an upgrade.

Now if we can just get the NHL to go back to wearing white at home and colors on the road, we'll be getting somewhere..

Posted by: Oneal | June 22, 2007 12:31 AM | Report abuse

It's sissy boy recess wear. Gimme a break.

Posted by: Harry | June 22, 2007 12:36 AM | Report abuse

The colors are fine.

The two logos suck. Especially the Firebird W. Are they getting some sort of money from Pontiac for that?

The white stripes going down the sleeve is weird looking for hockey.

Overall, it's very underwhelming.

Kinda like having $20million dollars to spend on free-agency and only signing someone like Trent Klatt on a two-way deal.

It doesn't matter what we are wearing (even if i like them).

There are a lot more important changes to be made. Here is a toast the rest of the off-season

Posted by: Tony | June 22, 2007 1:36 AM | Report abuse

Three years and this is the best they could come up with. What an embarrassment.

There's nothing iconic about this new logo and uniform, nothing to give the team an easily identifiable brand, nothing that makes you say, "Hey, it's the Washington Capitals!" The "logo" is just some spidery letters which will look like nothing from a distance.

Where's our winged wheel, our spoked "B", our maple leaf, our racist Indian head? No, all we get is a futuristic font and a secondary logo which looks like a butterfly being raped by the Capitol Dome.

Geez, even slapping a big AOL logo on the front of the new jersey would've been cooler than what they're unveiling today.

Posted by: Netsrak | June 22, 2007 2:10 AM | Report abuse

Oneal: The NHL is going back to wearing whites at home and dark jerseys on the road.

Meh. It's not great, but it's not Atlanta Thrashers terrible either. The combination of the side stripes and "understated" (plain) script logo make it look like a practice jersey. At least, that's what I thought it was when it first leaked. The jersey's design is ironic on several levels. First, the team name is the Capitals, and yet, all the letters in the logo are lowercase. I know that's nitpicking, but still. Second, the DC flag is a bold, recognizable emblem with two horizontal red stripes at the bottom. Although the jersey design has the three stars, they failed to give the jersey two traditional horizontal stripes at the bottom, which seems obvious to me. Maybe they will put them on the white home jersey. Last, it seems like the longer teams have to design a jersey/logo, the more likely they are to screw it up. The Blackhawks logo was designed by the owner's wife, and the Colorado Avalanche logo was a rush job during the summer of '95. The 'hawks logo is a classic, and I think the Avs' is better than most of the busy/ugly recent logos. Atlanta, Minnesota, Columbus and Nashville all had years and millions of dollars to come up with logos and the results all look like failed high school art class projects. I hope it looks better in person at the draft party.

I guess in the end, I agree with Tony--the jerseys don't matter nearly as much as who's in them.

Posted by: d'ohboy | June 22, 2007 2:23 AM | Report abuse

The city and team name do not combine to make a logo, but if that's what they wanted they should have gone back to the original "logo" which is much better than this redesign.

"capitals" is in an ugly font. The top of the letter p is backwards, curved where it should have a corner, and a corner where it should be curved. I guess this is supposed to "hip." I don't like the look of the eagle, either. The whole design is ugly. I could have created a much better Caps' "logo" on my computer in an hour's time.

I guess the league is mandating the NHL logo at the neck. It's completely unnecessary.

Why combine a red jersey with blue pants AND blue socks? The socks should match the jersey.

One benefit is that the uniform will be sorrier than the Caps' recent records.

Posted by: Caps' Fan | June 22, 2007 6:38 AM | Report abuse

I had to laugh at the quote by McDermott who hailed this version of the jersey as a "Brand Awakening"...haaaaaaackkk, couooughhh....arrrrrrraggggghhhhh....

Leonsis being a marketing guru obviously loves these kinds of comments. Then, they compare how Green Bay owns green/yellow...and somehow the Caps are to own r/w/b???

How about the fact Green Bay was once called "Titletown, USA" - how about iconic games played on the Frozen Tundra, cheeseheads, fan ownership??? Ever think that played into the worship of the team vs. a "redesigned logo"???

These uni's are lousy, despite what McPhee, Leonsis, and marketing SPIN-MASTERS are shoving down our throats....disgusting.

Posted by: The Rock | June 22, 2007 6:49 AM | Report abuse

Bland, boring, typical of the Leonis Caps, another disappointment. Maybe they can add the Cooley hotpants look to go with that terrible late-seventies disco look jerseys.

Posted by: Jim | June 22, 2007 7:37 AM | Report abuse

D'ohboy: The NHL Board of Governors voted NOT to return to whites at home.

I like the jerseys. Essentially what I wanted, a return to the old uniforms. Now about that potential third jersey...

Posted by: rich | June 22, 2007 8:55 AM | Report abuse

Seeing the white jersey in the print edition reminded me of the New England Revolution's jersey.

And now that I think about it, the jersey has more soccer elements than hockey elements (with of course the exception of jersey weight)

Posted by: Kim | June 22, 2007 8:55 AM | Report abuse

ok, its grown on me although it still looks kinda orange on my computer. i hope the color is more like the red they used to wear. i could do without the eagle on the shoulder. the logo is ok. i'm just glad they didn't crap it up with a bunch of diagonal stripes, etc. kept it clean. i hope the pants have the stars down the side like the old days. maybe the red white and blue socks too.

I'd rather that abomination be orange.

Posted by: AV | June 22, 2007 9:06 AM | Report abuse

My big question is this: was your story running today no matter what or did it run earlier than expected once the leak happened?

Also, I was kinda hoping for blue numbers on the white jersey but I'll have to see it tonight to make a final judgement.

Posted by: Rob | June 22, 2007 9:06 AM | Report abuse

this jersey just sucks. Very little blue and words instead of a logo. All this jersey does is just show the world that the marketing team is not creative. Three years and they come up with this? As if our record wasn't embarrassing enough.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 22, 2007 9:26 AM | Report abuse

Its decent, in a bland non-distinctive kind of way. Somebody said it right - looks like an expensive practice jersey. The one really positive thing is that it will be a better techy fit for Ovechkin's Robocop look!

The W is pretty ugly, and the pants/socks should also be red! With CCCP in front :)

Posted by: Vlad | June 22, 2007 9:32 AM | Report abuse

I'm withholding final judgment until I see it all together with the blue shorts tonight, but it looks better than it did with those crappy photos yesterday.

This sweater reminds why I have always hated the team's name. The Capitals is SO WEAK. In such a great and important city as this, isn't there a more creative and stronger name for the hockey team then "The Capitals"?

Instead of being inspiring, this back to the future logo reminds me of the simpletons that always seem to rise to positions of authority.

At least the Capitol dome logo with crossed hockey sticks was dignified. It looked timeless and traditional in the great spirit of hockey. If people want American Flag colors, couldn't they have come up with a sweater with that logo?

And if the color reproduction by the Post is accurate the red looks orange.

I second this question Tarik:

Was your story running today no matter what or did it run earlier than expected once the leak happened?

Posted by: Bing | June 22, 2007 9:40 AM | Report abuse

Why the hell did we have to take the color palette from the NATIONALS.

They say they did on-ice testing to see how clear the uniforms will look but, dont they realize that dark blue is going to appear as black when contrasted against the bright white ice.

Should have went with a normal royal blue.

Posted by: Omar | June 22, 2007 9:48 AM | Report abuse

I like the red jersey in the article linked above much more than the white one from the article today.

Never a fan of any white jersey, Caps or any other team I like.

Glad that the red is the home jersey, cause thats the one I will be seeing more often.

Posted by: the cheat | June 22, 2007 9:59 AM | Report abuse

This makes the caps look pretty weak. first the leak it on their own website. Then they say come see it in person tonight at the draft party. I'm sure a lot of people will be staying home tonight since the whole surprise is ruined.

Posted by: Mad | June 22, 2007 10:02 AM | Report abuse

Teams will NOT switch to home whites this year. Read the last paragraph of this TSN article from 2 days ago.

"More time was probably spent talking about whether teams should wear white or dark sweaters at home. After much debate, and many proposals and votes that did not provide a majority, it was decided to maintain the status quo and home teams would continue to wear dark jerseys next season."

Posted by: eeyeats | June 22, 2007 10:04 AM | Report abuse

"but, dont they realize that dark blue is going to appear as black when contrasted against the bright white ice."

The color in the logo and trim looks like black to me. The blue is going to be in the shorts according to the article.

I can't even express how disappointed I am. Most of the half ass fakes put together by fans were much better. Terrible.

Posted by: Jay | June 22, 2007 10:23 AM | Report abuse

I was hoping they were going to incorporate some symbols of the city into the logo -- I dunno, maybe something like using the Washington Monument as the "L" and the Capitol dome as the "A" -- and maybe three stars above and two red lines below to signify the flag. But that's just me.

Posted by: Sec117 | June 22, 2007 10:25 AM | Report abuse

The logo with the Dome over the words "Capitals" and a hockey stick that was "leaked" months ago (on an "All-Star" jersey) was so much better

So many negative comments. Are you guys kidding me. The jerseys represent the only tradition that this team has. Its a classic look and it brings back the right colors this team should wear. I think they look fantastic.

3 YEARS! It took 3 YEARS to go with this design!

Posted by: blankn1612 | June 22, 2007 10:36 AM | Report abuse

Its midnight blue, red, and White.

Ice contrast, and sweat will make it even darker.

If they wanted there own colors, why not use the Blue from the late 90s jersey and then the current red.

That would be an original jersey.

Posted by: Omar | June 22, 2007 10:38 AM | Report abuse

Dan, I could not agree with you more. How can you play in the nations capital, and not wear RED,WHITE, and BLUE. I love it.

And Teddy's comments that this is about going back to Tradition is crap. If he wanted to go back to tradition, then do it when you buy the team! By the way though. the eagle on the shoulder is a direct lift-off of the DC United emblem. This jersey took three years to make. unbelievable. This jersey stinks! Stinks. Having letters that say Capitals and taking 3 years to do this is unbelievable!

"If he wanted to go back to tradition, then do it when you buy the team!"

He did try to change the uni back when he bought the team, but at the time the uniforms they were wearing were only a couple years old and there was an outcry against changing them. He's always wanted to change the uniforms back to RWB. The new Reebok jerseys gave him an opportunity.

"the eagle on the shoulder is a direct lift-off of the DC United emblem."

That I will agree with.

I'll also add that him claiming to have "grown up a Caps fan" is a heap of crap.

Posted by: HolyOlie | June 22, 2007 10:59 AM | Report abuse

I'm liking it. Then again, I'd like anything, almost anything at all, so long as we get rid of the ridiculously Yuppiefied logo of the last dozen years, complete with font that completely obscured the player's name on the back of the jersey.

The new uni might not be perfect, but surely we can live with it.

Now, I'm trying to imagine what "form-fitting" means in the context of hockey pads. (Harder to ditch the sweater for fisticuffs?)

Wow, Scott Burnsides ESPN chat opens with a Caps question!

Chad (Cascade ,MD): Are the Captials headed in the right direction?

Scott Burnside: Well, I guess that depends on how you define the right direction. I think the problem for the Caps has been the team's reluctance to make itself better by adding free agents or higher profile free agents. I understand the need to be patient with a young, rebuilding team. But this is a Caps team that for the first third of the season was in the playoff mix, but faltered in the final third of the season. It would have been interesting to see if they had added a player if they could have been in the mix. But the Caps are not interested in trading any of their assets to improve themselves. I think the team this year needs to make a move forward in the standings or they will see an already fragile fan base erode even further.

I can't believe the people who think that the eagle is a ripoff of the DC United logo or the Pontiac person says it, every other person without a genuine thought in their head parrots it.

The eagle on the shoulder is quite obviously based on the presidential seal, which is a perfectly logical symbol to base a logo off of considering it is a symbol associated with Washington DC.

Sorry about the bad info on the white-home, dark-away jerseys. The NHL had been talking about it all year, but I guess they changed their minds. The pre-order form for the jerseys confirmed this, since the whites were listed as away and vice-versa.

Having seen the jersey in person at the draft party, I must admit that it has its merits. It's a clean design with good colors and has a presence to it. I was talking with someone at the party, and we agreed that when your color scheme matches the Habs and Rangers, you're doing something right. The vertical stripes will take some getting used to--they remind me of San Jose's recent teal jerseys, which isn't necessarily a good thing (still looks a bit like a practice jersey). Seeing it in public, it looks much better than on the web. Most everyone who saw the leaked photos was happier with the real deal, and the long lines at the merchandise tables confirmed this. Personally, I prefer the white away jersey in person. It allows more of the blue to come through, and the red can be a bit overpowering in a Detroit Dead Things Santa-Suit kind of way. The design team deserves a major thumbs up for the lettering and numbers on the back. They're highly visible-legible from a distance. It'll make it much easier to tell players apart when I'm drunk and sitting in the nosebleeds. Also, the socks and blue pants look really cool. I know that sounds weird, but they do.

In the end, what's more important is that we got Alzner at #5, who is a hell of a lot better than Hickey at #4. I watched Hickey play in Seattle, and I don't know what the Kings were smoking. Everyone at the party was shocked by how far Cherepanov and Esposito fell. As a Caps fan, I threw up a little when Pittsburgh drafted Espo--that's going to come back to haunt us.
