Backstrom: 'I feel sorry for my teammates'

Although it appeared last week that Chris Clark was close to returning to the lineup, he did not practice today. That almost certainly rules him out for tomorrow's game against the Flames -- and possibly longer.

Here are the revamped forward combos, likely designed to squeeze some more offense out of a team that mustered only three goals in the two losses over the weekend.

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov (Laing)
Cooke-Fedorov-Semin
Fleischmann-Laich-Fehr
Brashear-Gordon-Bradley

Cristobal Huet is wearing a new mask, complete with an eagle, the Capitol Dome and his new number. Does that mean he's sticking around for a little while? The UFA-to-be said afterward that re-signing with the Caps will be one of the options he considers.

Update:Here are a few post practice notes of interest:

*David Steckel has undergone surgery to place two pins in his broken finger and will miss longer than the two to three weeks the team originally said he would. Coach Boudreau conceded that he's hoping to see Steckel again this season.

*Nicklas Backstrom, who accidentally scored into his own net to help the Penguins escape VC with a 4-2 win on Sunday, made his first public comments about his gaffe today.

"I feel sorry for my teammates," Backstrom said. "I'm surprised by myself. I don't know how it could happen. It happened. We have a game tomorrow."

"I thought I was further in the corner and I was just trying to put it behind the net," he added. "It happened and I can't do anything about now. I just have to go on and play the next game. ...It's not the best situation when I did it, so it's hard. But you have to go on. I'm just 20 years old. I feel sorry for my team. That's all I can say."

Owner Ted Leonsis came into the hallway near the locker room and gave Backstrom a hug moments after he came off the ice. Leonsis joked that he got his nice business suit "all sweaty" but added that he wanted to show the youngster some support.

*Ovechkin said he's looking forward to the 'OvechKam' that's going to focus on him throughout tomorrow's game.

"It will be good," Ovechkin said. "It will be fun to watch after the game what I do. They just tell me right now. It will be fun, a new experience for me."

Majority owner Ted Leonsis is decidedly less enthusiastic about it.

"It's all for the fans; I'll be honest, I don't like it," Leonsis said. "I think hockey is the most team-oriented sport. Alex wants team achievements, not individual achievements. But this is the entertainment industry, an entertainment business, and I think fans just love every moment he's on the ice. Now he just has to realize he's always on camera. Tomorrow is a big game. That's our game in hand [on Carolina], we have to win tomorrow, and I don't want this to become 'The Truman Show.'"

*Boudreau said Clark went to see a doctor about his strained groin tendon today, which is why he didn't practice. He might be back out there for the a.m. skate but still is at least a week or so away from returning -- and even that might be optimistic.

*Kolzig will start in net tomorrow night and will be seeking victory No. 300.

It's Huet's new "starter mask".

- Sorry Olie

Posted by: Harry | March 11, 2008 11:10 AM | Report abuse

either Huet is sticking around, has plenty of money to spend on helmets, or has a secret deal with the Hawks. Are we sure this is an eagle?

I'd love to see him extend his contract.

As for Clark, at this point I just wish him good health. It must be a serious injury to linger so long.

Tarik, any updates on how Backstrom is today? He's too important a part of this team for the other players to let him be down in the dumps about Sunday.

Posted by: Rich | March 11, 2008 11:13 AM | Report abuse

Clarkie is done for the season, because the Caps are as well.
He mentioned recently that he could injure it again possibly harming him long-term (as in, career-ending). I look forward to seeing him next year!

Cristobal Huet is wearing a new mask, complete with an eagle on it and his new number. Does that mean he's sticking around for a little while?

Whew, now Backstrom won't mess him up with opposite team goalie. :)

1. Cooke on the 2nd line I just don't get. Laich is better and Flash, as much as he is maligned, has more "flash". Cooke is a grinder.

2.I hope that Huet is staying. It has been refreshing seeing solid goaltending here for a change lately. The offense (and the defense) haven't supported him in the past couple games but without him, those could have been blowouts.

Tarik,
Cooke is listed as LW/RW. Are you sure he plays left and Semin right wing?

Posted by: yo | March 11, 2008 11:25 AM | Report abuse

Cooke is very familiar with Calgary from his days in Vancouver.

Lets hope he helps BB put together a good game plan.

Finally!

Lines that make some sense!
14-21-43 played VERY well in the Minnesota game. They can alternate 87 and 53 on the 4th line.

Huet getting a new mask is a good sign he may stick around. If they can go into next year with Huet and Kolzig as 1 and 1A, that would be a nice combo. Alternate them evenly until FEB and lean a little more on whoever is hot at that time.

Hopefully, Darren Machesney will be ready to come up from Hershey.

Gotta feel for Johnson though.

A few random thoughts from a new poster on this page:

Everyone talks about how the Capitals need a big-body, stay-at-home defenseman who will hit people, clear rebounds, and take up space in front of the net. I totally agree - we give up too many goals on scrambles in front. We need someone like - Brendan Witt. Now here's my question: I remember when he left here, he said he liked playing here but did not want to be part of the rebuilding process. But now he is stuck with NYI and he's not going to be in the playoffs anyway. Maybe now that the rebuilding process is over, and the Caps are real contenders (if not this year, then next), we ought to look at getting him back? Would he come back? Next year is the last year of his contact with NYI, and he is being paid under $3 million. He's 32 or so, maybe we should trade for him and give him an extension for what we are paying Poti, or a little more? If Pothier is done, his $2.5 million will be freed up. I like the idea of getting Witt back here, the fans know and (mostly) like him, and maybe now he would want to come back. He's certainly not getting his contender wish on the Island.

It is going to be really, really tough to catch Carolina. I saw the poster from yesterday who said that if we win the two head-to-heads and the game in hand, we are only one point back. But the Canes' schedule is really easy - they close the season with 8 straight games against the SE division, and they play well against the SE. Contrast that to the Caps - we play well against the good teams, but the mediocre teams like NYI and FLA and TB and ATL give us fits. I don't look at those last games we have against our division and think, "Oh, that's easy." We just don't play well against those teams - we don't put them away.

I think we have a much better chance of catching PHI even though we don't play them head-to-head, and even though they have a game-in-hand on the Caps. Over their last 13 games, PHI plays Toronto twice, the Rangers twice, the Devils twice, and the Penguins THREE times. Virtually every game they have is against someone fighting for playoff position. That is a tough schedule.

However, whether unless a team we are chasing TOTALLY collapses, we still need to win 9 of the remaining games to even have a chance. If we go 9-3, PHI can go 6-7 and we would only tie - and you have to figure some overtime games in there too.

This weekend really killed us. I am so glad I was out of town and not able to watch. The only thing I caught was the last 2:30 of the PIT game, and that was bad enough. Three points would have made a HUGE difference, and we played well enough for all four.

Lastly, I think the only way they keep Kolzig around for next year is if he takes a huge pay cut to play one more year and close his career here. But does anyone really think he's going to take a huge pay cut to be the backup? And where do you dump Johnson, who's already under contract next year for one-fifth of Kolzig's salary next year, and is arguably the better goalie at this stage?

Posted by: jammand | March 11, 2008 11:31 AM | Report abuse

@Sapper

Cooke played with the Sedin twins in Vancouver their first couple years in the league. Each line needs a grinder to go into the corners. Semin won't do that (c:

I think that is a great fit

Posted by: KingClancy | March 11, 2008 11:32 AM | Report abuse

@cantmisskid
I have a feeling if Huet resigns with the caps next season, Kolzig will retire. I'm not saying he should, because I still like the way he plays no matter what his stats or people say about him, but I just think if Huet resigns he will probably retire.

i can't read too much into him getting a new mask. these guys get their gear for free, and i'd imagine goalies get a pretty sweet deal on the paint job (if the team doesn't pick it up entirely) in exchange for the artist being able to say "i did ____'s mask." for all we know, he could already have one for the team he wants to join in the offseason...

The Caps are either going to use the Bruins/Pens game as fuel to the fire to make a run into the playoffs... or they will tank/not get over the 2losses and just throw in the towel... To me i dont see thim throwing in the towel not quite yet... especially when Gabby is the boss, I believe they still have a shot, and he knows that and i think he will will push this team to its breaking point be4 they throw it in... Go Caps the final 12 begin 2mmrow night agaisnt Inglina and the Flames...

I certainly hope Huet sticks around for a while. You can clearly see that the play of the guys has picked up since his arrival. Granted the games this past weekend weren't wins, but at the same rate it's not like we were blown out of the water either. Huet has made some huge saves in his starts here.

Finally, here are standings projected through the end of the regular season that are based on how the team did in the last number of games that they have remaining. Example: The Rangers have 13 games remaining. In their last 13 games, they got 21 points. They now have 81 points. Under this model, their final point total projects to 102 points. (This time, the first three are the division winners.)

i think the caps will be ok although we have mount everest to climb now! as a huge caps fan i have noticed that this team has accomplished a chemistry like those elite teams in the league. no one can blame BB and the rest of the team by saying that this year was a failure because we did not make the playoffs. the main reason why this team is "on the bubble still" is because of the seemed to be insurmountable hole we dug ourselves into early in the year. Since then we've blown away everyone else in the SE division and the rest of the league now dreads playing the workhorses on our nations capitals. The key to any chance at a playoff run is still in our hands, although we need some help! it all starts tomoro night against the flames and i have a good feeling about our chances. Backie will be A-ok for sure and Ovie will be on a rampage. I'll be there rootin our team on! #1 Caps FAN FOREVER!!! common CAPITALS!!

If the caps are out of the playoff picture by the time clark is ready, shut him down for the season and have surgery if needed and be ready to go full speed next year. No reason for career ending by playing games that do not matter. I hope they get into the "P" as it should be banned again. They play better when not mentioned. Also good to see Nicky getting support he deserves. They would not be close without his play this year. To bad Hanlon kept him on the wing so long. It is no accident that when he moved back to center the team picked up.

*As for the WITT comment, Witt was a big hitter and mostly liked, but his skating skills were lacking and we don't need any cones. I think we need something other than WITT on "D"! Anyone else agree, because it's alright to hit, but if you can't catch or skate with that man, what good are ya??? I hate to say from observation that it seems people tend to go right around him.

In regards to bringing back Witt, I'd veto that idea. During his last couple of years Witt was getting tons of minor stick penalties, mainly because he's lost a step. Bring on Alzner!

I know Alzner's big, but how long before he is NHL ready?? I'm just interested if he will contribute from day one? Is he the real deal or will he need development time? They do grow them big in Alberta, but we need, big/strong & QUICK!

Posted by: Greenie | March 11, 2008 3:26 PM | Report abuse

I think Witt fits right in with BB's offensive type of play. BB's system doesn't require a stay home D but it does require guys who can hit in the neutral zone. It's all about transition and scoring goals not winning 1 to nothing.

Wow, what a great question in all, so I get to go back to dreaming again this week.
Who I would want...........
1. Nick Lidstrom - Detroit
2. Joseph Corvo - Carolina
3. Mathieu Schneider - Mighty Ducks
4. Niklas Kronvall(sp?) - Detroit
5. Andrei Markov - Montreal
(Any one "D-man" would be awesome!)

Realistically speaking I'm not sure we could get any of them and as of BIG KARL ALZNER - I think he is a better hope than all the above, not sure who if any become free agents??? I don't follow contracts as much as I prob. should. Who would you suggest???

I remember when I first came in I was putting a lot of pressure on myself to live up to expectations. Now I've played so many games and I'm more comfortable. Things come more naturally now.

The more games you play the more comfortable you get out there and the less pressure you feel.

And I am still polishing my half slap shot. Every day when everybody else hits the showers, I am polishing my half slap shot. I might unleash it tomorrow, I think I have polished it long enough.

@Greenie, I'm not really sure who I like out there. Seems as if the game is changing and being a stay at home bruiser may not be the way to go anymore. Goalies are the hot commodity now. The quickness that Huet displays reminds me of what we have not had in years. He made a pad save late in the game that I'm still wondering in amazement over. I'm part of the 6 goal club with 828 so that's where I'm coming from. I do like your choices. I'd take anyone of those guys.

Goalies are a hot commodity and the reaction time Huet has is pretty amazing! I know the stacked pad stop your talking about, who was it one again? Can't remember, but it was tremendous. Stay at home "D" men/bruisers - hmmm not part of the game today, I like the big guys who aren't afraid to bang but have SMARTS & SKILL and QUIKNESS! Green is pretty close, but I want to see a better +/- from him in the future. We really need a Nick Lidstrom or Andrei Markov - I believe Nick has a +/- of 32 and Andrei is around 20. Don't quote me on this you stat crazies, I'm just pulling close figures.

Anyways, I thin Olie can pull this one off.. He's rested and HOO-AY could use a break I'm thinking. If we're getting in this year we need to use both goalies effectively.

Also I agree that Alzner is the D man we're waiting for... dont be surprised if there isnt a lot of movement this offseason. I think McPhee will stay pat with the eception of signing a goalie and sorting out the glut of grinders (I hope Brads Stays)

Next year the Caps will be one year older...

while the fans will be 20 due to the added stress of this season.

Why do I always feel like I'm picking on you Greenie? Not sure about the actual +/- #s and I'm too lazy and frustrated to look them up right now...but alas they aren't necessary for this post anywho.

Before you start preaching about Green's +/- compared to a Lidstrom or a Markov...look at the teams they play for. A good example is Senor Pothier...season before he was a Cap he had a +29. Since coming to Washington he is a -6.

Posted by: Yosh | March 11, 2008 4:59 PM | Report abuse

@Esa
I must correct myself - When I said +/- for Andrei Markov, I meant Mathieu Schneider, but typed Markov - he is actually a -4 rating, but I like his skating ability, sorry for that - my bad!

Posted by: Greenie | March 11, 2008 5:00 PM | Report abuse

Olie is starting for one simple reason: 300th win with the Caps secured at home. Better to get it out of the way as soon as we can provided that we can win tomorrow, which we've proven this weekend is more of a challenge than we might have imagined.

Huet is our goalie next season -- and for the rest of this season after Olie gets 300. Sign him ASAP. He's the missing piece - even more than a vet defenseman. On that note, now we get to focus this offseason on signing/trading for that vet defenseman.

"Huet must start in every freaking game until Caps won't have a theoretical chance to get in.

I'm not going to get roped into this again, but look at the stats man. Compare Huet's & Kolzig's stats since mid-January and tell me what you see.

I don't understand your dreaming concept. People keep throwing names around that don't make any sense for this team, be it age, style, $$$, etc. It's really not that hard to do a little bit of research, we are all on the internet. Anyone can build a dream team, it's called a fantasy league.

Posted by: START OLIE? | March 11, 2008 5:06 PM | Report abuse

@Yo

Except Huet is on a losing streak, and Olie is on a (granted, very small) winning streak. When we absolutely needed points this weekend, Huet did not make the timely stops. He may have played great, and you can blame whatever other factors you want, but he gave up the winning goals in the final minutes of both games. period. It's not always about making lots of nice saves, it's about making the ones that matter the most.

Posted by: GusDaMan | March 11, 2008 5:09 PM | Report abuse

I think the management gave up already. that's why they are starting Olie.

Maybe they are right, the chances are very slim, at least Olie will get his 300 by April 15, get his number on rafters by October 15. Good planning ahead!

Posted by: yo | March 11, 2008 5:10 PM | Report abuse

@GusDaMan

I agree...Huet didnt even try to kick the leg out on Backstrom's shot.

Seriously though...Goaltending is not the problem right now. We need to put teams away when we have the chance and are pushing and outplaying them. If you let them hang around..bad things can happen as we saw last weekend.

Posted by: Homey | March 11, 2008 5:11 PM | Report abuse

@GusDaMan

Just to remind you that in the last game it was Backstrom who scored. If that is not enough, he gave up two goals vs. Boston in two 5 on 3.

Just tell me why in the World we traded for Huet. Why? We got excellent vet Kolzig who just one game shy of 300.

Posted by: Anthony | March 11, 2008 5:16 PM | Report abuse

@Yo

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Huet acquisition, and I think he should get the majority of starts. Plus the decreased playing time seems to bring out the best in Olie as well. I just disagree that playing goalie "1b" over "1a" is somehow a bad idea and a guaranteed loss when "1a" just lost 2 straight while allowing late goals.

Posted by: GusDaMan | March 11, 2008 5:19 PM | Report abuse

@GusDaMan

By your logic, the goalies are the end all and be all.

If thats the case we should start the goalie with the highest winning percentage, shouldn't we?

Huet .530%
Kolzig .502%

What a completely ridiculous way to judge goalies.

Posted by: Kolzig? | March 11, 2008 5:46 PM | Report abuse

From the previous thread, I agree with Goober and Novaron - Syd was not trash talking, he was just excited and celebrating. I think anyone in his position would have been at that point. If he had not been mic'd up (which he probably forgot about in the heat of the momment), we would be none the wiser. It's not like he got in Nicky's face or anything. Frankly, I think far too much has been made out of it ...

And back to the goalie debate:

Olie was a top 10 keeper in Feb - Huet was not. Not to say Olie is better overall, just that he is not the chump many of you make him out to be. Have a little faith, why dontcha?!? Besides, he'll be on fire for his 300th win. So don't throw in the towel yet - he has more than one monster game this season, including 2 of his last 3 (and the one that was not a monster game was lost not because of him alone, but because of the team as a whole - they ALL did not play up to their potential).

Now, if we can just survive the last 5 minutes of a game for a change, I will be happy!!

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Today, one show had on Mike Green (They asked him about new contract, really didn't have much to say about it, "Just going back and forth", another show had on Brooks Laich (said he joked with Backstrom that Laich told him before the Pens game, they both were going to score goals, told Backstrom he should have been more clear) and later Sergei Federov was on talking to Phil Esposito about the Caps (he sounded like he was enjoying his time here) Ted Leonsis is on alot, even McPhee has been on. YAY MELANIE, you tell "Gusdaman"! School him up about hockey.

so, now, finally, in spite of how "great" gmgm appeared on his deadline trades, it is apparent that the ocean-sized hole is the one that should have been filled: stay-at-home, clear the crease and rebounds, veteran defenseman would have made the BIGGEST difference on this team. Some of us have known about this hole since last year. I am glad that others have finally noticed it. (gee, at the expense of ANOTHER season though!)

Everybody's assuming that we'll beat Carolina twice - a proven NHL-playoffs team that knows very well what's at stake. We have the talent, and the heart, to do it - but that's not going to be enough, everything else has to click to win 10 out of 12.

I'll keep the faith while being realistic.

Just look where we are if we beat Calgary, and they lose to Chicago tonight...5 down with a game in hand, and 2 vs.them...We start to control our own destiny.

@ Mauree

I also don't think anyone is assuming anything.....This weekend showed we shouldn't ASSUME that playing better then Boston and Pittsburgh means 4 points.

I think it's more of an analysis of reasons why we shouldn't empty the gas tank.

@SA-Town

Yep I agree. I meant that, while still thinking we can beat Carolina twice, it's going to be hard, and eventful. Even the realistic ones like me were expecting at least two points out of last weekend. So we're hoping for four in two games now - two games that on paper are going to be even more difficult that the last two.

I love the fact that You-Eh lets in a totally soft goal that costs us in each game and no one mentions it. I agree that he played both well enought to win and the team let him down, but then I've been saying that all year.

Starting Olie is NOT going to end the playoff chances...that happened last weekend...Huet the Saviour has let the fans down...I hope he wants to stay here for a few more years and see how this fan base will turn on you in a second. Look how the "fans" treat Olie.

@ Mauree

I have tickets to all the remaining home games...I dont think I can go anymore if we are officially out..Just too drained from this year...I would rather give them to non-hockey friends to get exposure.

Tonight my math is good...Watching the game with one eye, and the out of town scoreboard with the other...If we win, and Canes loses, Fri night should be lots of fun...At this point...Fun is all Im looking for.

@Bob

Maybe because you're the only one who thinks that any of those goals were soft.

Interesting that they're putting up "Ovie scores!" in the Good Old Hockey Game song. They had done the same thing for Bondra a while back, but removed it when they realized how dumb it was.

If Ovie is taking the place of Bobby in the song, then the Caps lose the game.

- First verse, Bobby (Ovie) scores.

- Second verse, the home team falls behind. Then, the home team scores, and it's 1-1.

- Third verse, the home teams wins the Cup.

Ergo, if Bobby (Ovie) scored the first goal, making it 1-0, he was not on the home team, which scored to even it at 1-1 in the second verse. Thus, Ovie's team loses.

Wait, maybe that's appropriate after all...

Olie is starting because Huet started back to back games this weekend. Even if he had won both games, Olie would be starting today.

Three starts in four days is hard enough, even without only have 20 hours in between back-to-back starts.

Were you guys here complaining when Billington would get a start? Jeez.

Here are some pix of Huet's new mask that people have asked for (haven't seen anyone post this yet).
