Clark Scratched Tonight

Captain Chris Clark will be a healthy scratch tonight, giving way to Eric Fehr. Jose Theodore will start in net and Bryan Helmer has been recalled. Helmer will replace Shaone Morrisonn, who will sit out with a lower body injury, according to Coach Bruce Boudreau.

The rest of the lineup should look like this:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin
Boudreau noted that he might switch Semin and Kozlov
Fleischmann-Fedorov-Kozlov
Laich-Nylander-Fehr
Brashear-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Alzner-Helmer
Erkine-Green
Schultz-Jurcina

That should cover it for now. I'll check in again after the game.

i don't agree with this at all. scratching a capatin against a major rival to make way for some underachiever who cant score to save his life

Posted by: _stevo | January 14, 2009 5:57 PM | Report abuse

I think Fehr is on that line to dig the puck out, pass it to Nylander so that he can pivot and pass it to Laich in front of the net. Makes since. I love Clark, but have not seen him finish anything lately either. Maybe they were going for a little more youth and speed.

I mean sense. Stupid spell check.

Posted by: Kim-3 | January 14, 2009 6:01 PM | Report abuse

_stevo, just be happy Erskine is in the lineup. I like Alzner with Helmer. Brings back the Hershey element and puts Karl with a steadying presence. However, those top two lines still kill me. Gone to class. I'll be cheering very silently.

Yes, Bruce, PLEASE switch Semin and Kozlov.

It's about time Clark was scratched. He's been almost as useless since he got back into the line-up as before his injury. Before the injury was blamed for his terrible play, now what? Seems to me that he's just forgotten how to play. For the life of me I can't understand how he got 30 goals in an NHL season. I don't care whether he has the C or not. Also, we all know who the real captain is anyway, in every sense of that title.

Since I haven't said anything about last night's game... I know that overall the team didn't play particularly well, but the main culprit is Theodore who has gotten back to his old ways as soon as I praised him on here. He was responsible for 2, if not 3 goals last night. The 1st one was particularly bad and sagged the whole team that was dominating the Oilers at the time. Overall, in his past 2 starts he has looked short of confidence again. Brent wasn't much better lately. I'd like to take another look at Varlamov if this continues. We can't win with such sub par goaltending.

Anyway, go Caps!

Posted by: richmondphil | January 14, 2009 6:11 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are still a veteran defenseman away from being a dominant club.

The Caps have to be able to win games when their offense takes the night off and they get only 1 or 2 goals.

The problem has been that the goalies and defensemen have really regressed the past 3 games.

You can't give up 5 goals and expect to win, but that's what this club did against Montreal and Edmonton.

Columbus was playing without their leading scorer, Rick Nash. They should never have been able to put up a 3-0 tag on Washington at home.

Posted by: leopard09 | January 14, 2009 6:12 PM | Report abuse

Schultz-Jurcina. God help the Caps tonight. And scratching your captain who is supposed to be the kind of player you need in these games (dig the puck out or the corners, force the play along the boards, someone to do the dirty work), well that has to say something big time there.

Could Clark not be long for this team? Can't imagine anyone would want to trade for him now, given his injuries coupled with the lack of activity in the trade market now. But if Poti is coming back soon (meaning in the next two weeks or so) and the team wants to keep Alzner, someone making some cash has to go. If you can't get rid of Nylander, Clark makes $2.75M so getting him off the books allows the team to keep Alzner and promote someone like Bourque who makes around $1M or less.

Fehr in for Clark sounds smart to me. 17 seems out of sorts and has lost 2.3 fights in the last week. Fehr's bigger, and younger, and due.

Fehr's Steckel's work ethic with something approaching Flash's hands. His one gork, one squibb, one ground-ball with eyes away. He certainly hasn't shown me much less than Clark has lately. And if Clark's 30 counts for anything today, put 37 in goal.

also- while i'm VERY impressed with theo's 5 on 3 goaltending, i feel like it was a risky, stupid decision to start him for the second night in a row. not only did he not play great last night, but he's probably more tired than he would be after a regular game. his team was so lazy last night that he had a LOT of extra work to do. i miss johnny, and he deserves a game sometime soon

The officiating at the start was crap. That was a Pittburgh's players stick that hit their guy in the face and Brash gets 4?! Then Crosby falls into the net when barely touched and they get a 2-min 5-on-3. Nice.

Don't know what we're doing either. Gave up a clean breakaway and two 2-on-1's in the first 10 minutes!

Hate to blame a goalie on a 2-men advantage goal, but my grandma recovers quicker that Theo. He slid way past the post and was fumbling at the side of the net when Malkin took the shot.

Green has NO real incentive to change his game. Regardless of how many turnovers he has his ice time doesn't diminish one bit.

Hey Tarik, I may be blind but I never saw any explanation of why Morrison is not playing. Watching Comcast and may have missed it at the beginning, or not paying attention (easy for me becuase when Laughlin laughs I HAVE to tune out).

Someone above suggested Mo is trade bait? Is that it? Or injured? Or not playing well? We all thought Jurcina was the one to be sat, but wasn't him.

Any insight would be appreciated.

And I agree with some above: love your pre-game lineup talks....

Great job!

How is Schultz still in the NHL. He's not even a top 4 D in Hershey.

Posted by: Willy6 | January 14, 2009 8:24 PM
-------------------------------------------
In no order

a) Because the A has got nothing left for him there.

b) The FO loves him

c) He plays the position well

d) He's the youngest and least experienced on the backline not named Alzner, so there's still some upside to be had.

Just my $.02.

Posted by: Section117 | January 14, 2009 8:31 PM | Report abuse

I blame the goal on Schultz. He came back and skated around, leaving the guy on the point completely alone. He's slow, he's not determined. I don't care about the +-, when he's on our D, we just play worse.

But I stand by my opinion that our real problem right now is a overall lack of determination... I get it, we won 7 in a row... but can I please be frustrated when I see our team play like this? Can I?

Come on Caps turn it on... it's not effort we're lacking, it's teeth grinding furious fore-check... where did that go?

1. Shoot
2. Make simple passes
3. Make simple dump ins

Green can...
1. Give away the puck
2. Score meaningless goals
3. Talk BIG games.

Posted by: 555Mass | January 14, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

And Green had the nerve to kinda question why he wasn't an all-star....his inflated head is so far up his own butt. He should just be a forward. At least his turnovers wouldn't be so deep in our own zone. He's gotta be hands-down the most turnover prone player in the NHL

Posted by: cstanton1 | January 14, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Stats lie

We can all see the turnovers.

What do statisticians look for as a turnover anyhow?

They should streamline that. They already have people watching all the games in Toronto for goal reviews. Just hire the people to watch the games there and do the stats from there. This way there is no difference from game to game as what counts as what

Posted by: rdy4all2000 | January 14, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

for a bunch of people who say crosby and malkin suck(#1 and 2 in points), you guys love to use stats as an objective tell-all.

a turnover is a turnover, whether it was recorded as a technical turnover or not.

Hope many of you are now starting to see my point on the good news headed our way down the road. The losing streaks are necessary from a mental standpoint.

Remember keep your glass full. It appears the Coach is learning that in limited circumstances the Alex squared and Backs experiment works but not at this time. Koz was having a great run so lets get him back on the top line. He will go to the net (some). I still clamor that in order to get to the second round of the playoffs we need a veteran LEADER defenseman who can move the puck like wild boy Greeny but with brains.

Is anyone more excited than me about the beginning of the stretch run?

Looking Ahead: Really really Good News (update)

The last 21 games of the season the Caps schedule includes:

13 games against division foe
4 against Atlanta
3 against Tampa
3 against Florida
3 against carolina (2 at home)

2 games against the Maple Leafs

1 against the Bruins (A)
1 against the Penguins (H)
1 against the Flyers (A)
1 against the Predators (A)
1 against the Sabers (H)
1 against the Islanders (A)

Looking good for the stretch run...no rush to rush back Poti. Is Greeny playing hurt. When you hurt youo don't think straight.

Great point. I agree. All teams go through a slump. It's all about timing. You need to have your slump occur before the crucial time. Now is a better time than most. We had a good run, we can slump a little now, and then make hard push after all star break, but with goal of peaking at playoff time! As frustrated as I get about some of the combos that never last more than a period, this is the time to do it.

I want a win tonight but if not it is still: Let's go Caps!

@Cstanton - I haven't read the whole thread, but it seems you're on the "I hate Green" warpath again. Yes Green will give up some turnovers. Green produces FAR more than enough offense to offset some defensive lapses. Every single team and Every single GM would love to have Green on their team. Green has a great shot at making Team Canada in the next Olympics. Green finished 7th overall in Norris Trophy voting. Green led all D-men in goals, and will likely lead all d-men in goals again if he stays healthy the rest of the season.

There are some things that are opinions. Preferring vanilla ice cream to chocolate is an opinion. To make the case that Mike Green is terrible is just plain wrong and ill informed at best, just plain stupid at worst.

Give it a break man.

As far as I'm concerned, they can lose as much as they want in the regular season, so long as they get to the playoffs. They can win 63 games or 82, if they get to the playoffs, it won't matter. They have a good shot at this game. Go Caps!

Posted by: ejohnsto | January 14, 2009 9:19 PM | Report abuse

one question...HOW CAN THIS NOT BE A NATIONALLY TELEVISED GAME??? The NHL has a long way to go in terms of marketing, and freakin survivin!!!

totally agree on green.

every player has weaknesses. it's the great ones, though, who find a way to make up for them.

lamborgreenie for the win!

Funny how the Pens and their fans are pissed because OV threw a completely legal check against Cindy, but were cheering at the 2 hard cross-checks to OV back in the first which were clearly targeted at OV.

I guess in that junk arena, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | January 14, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

There are some things that are opinions. Preferring vanilla ice cream to chocolate is an opinion. To make the case that Mike Green is terrible is just plain wrong and ill informed at best, just plain stupid at worst.

Give it a break man.

Posted by: SombreroGuy | January 14, 2009 9:16 PM

And on that note...

Posted by: Section117 | January 14, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

green is easily one of the best offensively minded D man in the NHL, if not the best. the problem is, mediocre puck moving D men who play a much better defensive game appeal to me more than green. green also brings hardly any physicality to our blue line.

I was a bit taken back when we signed him for what we did this summer, but for the most part he earns his paycheck. he just needs to buckle down a bit more in his own zone.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 14, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse

lets talk about that amazing puck shuffle between 14-91-28 on that last goal.

For those wondering about Mo, he was injured during the game in Montreal (this according to Jay Leach), though he didn't miss more than a shift. He played with it last night, my guess is since it is a leg injury and being the second of a back to back they decided to rest him.

That being said, I don't know what's going on at ice level, but OV was taunting a little after that goal...

I'm sorry but despite the goal I never liked Schultz and probably never will... slow, out of position, never proactive, he's a pole that has no physical presence.

But finally a good period offensively for the Caps... for 20 minutes they played like they always should - or like we always like them to.

I'm sorry but I'm going to wear the doom-inator suit for a while. Attitude problems and all that :D

Anyway, it warms me up inside to see the 7-8-9-10 spots in the conference standings. Pittsburgh is #10, and they are:

1 point behind #8 Carolina, who has a game in hand.
Tied with #9 Florida, but Florida has three games in hand.

Of course, "attendance" is an interesting word in the NHL; it doesn't actually mean the number of people in attendance. I think it's "tickets distributed".

gringo-
I was watching the Pitt feed on the web and the announcers were saying the empty seats were due to severely inclement weather in Pitt.

Posted by: kevbnyc | January 14, 2009 10:33 PM | Report abuse

Wow, that was worth the price of admission! Great game!

Had to watch the Pittburgh telecast since that's the one NHL CI picked and their commentators made a huge deal out of what Ovechkin was doing. What was he doing exactly? Is there some kind of rule against hitting Crosby or Malkin? I don't get it.

Anyway, he shut the up pretty good. Was good to see Semin have a very good game, as well. That whole 2nd line of Semin - Fedorov - Fleischmann looked great. We may have found ourselves a real 2nd line tonight.

Theo was scaring the crap out of me all night though.

365 posts. Anything less than 100 or so and I would have read them. I'm not reading you and you aren't reading me.

The Caps played just like vs Habs except the lucky breaks went our way. It works like that over 82 games.

The Caps have reclaimed the luck. This means they will hammer the Bruins on Saturday. Final = 5-2 Caps.

Hi my name is Tom and I'm a Theodore detractor. Theo tonight was just good enough so that when the luck broke our way, we won. Theo was a difference maker. #2 star in my book behind OV.

Helmer messed up big time on that early goal.

Flash is really looking like the real deal. Kinda like Semin "light."

The Pens announcers admitted that the Brashear dbl-minor was "phantom" and then the sticked player between 2 and 3 said it was Goddard, not Brash, with the stick. From my POV, the Caps in the end got the benefit of the penalty calls.

@ kevbnyc

I'll give it a rest when Theo starts playing like a #1 NHL goalie. I don't have anything against him personally which I proved by praising him when he played well recently.

He's been crap again in the past few games though. Also, go to NHL.com, click on stats, pick goalies and sort them by save %. Theo is near the very bottom out of 44 regular NHL goalies. That's not what we paid $4.5 million for.

Anyway, I don't wanna be negative after a great win over those whinos, but the fact is that with this kind of goaltending we're going nowhere in the playoffs. Even we can't score 4 goals in every game and looking at Theo's GAA that's what we have to do to win when he's in there.

Posted by: ranndino | January 14, 2009 10:42 PM | Report abuse

I have posted numerous times that the Caps would get 110 pts and win the SE going away.

I want to revise my mid-nominal assessment to say the Caps will end up with 115 pts, still winning the SE by multiple lenghts.

The only excitement over the last two weeks of the season will be #1 in East or #2.

I have a vacation booked and paid for in Tucson Apr 8-14. I will miss then watching the last two games. I did that because those games are meaningless and I will be back for playoff game #1. That is, I will be back in Orlando to watch. My only live attendance will be Feb 14 and 15 vs Tampa and Florida.

As a former STH, I am there in spirit at every game.

115 pts. #1 or 2 seed. After that, it all depends on desire.

-I thought Theodore had an ok game. Made some big saves, but, at the same time, he let in a couple softies.
-The defense was ok as well. Made some bad plays, but overall they were good.
-I'm still kicking myself for wanting to get rid of Flash, last season. Has he turned into something.
-That was a sweet pass by Feds, but an even better finish by Semin.
-Ovi was Ovi. It's just sick to see how much determination he has, each shift he takes.

Crosby gets it from Mario. Remember how prissy Jagr used to be? Both Jagr and Crosby have followed the same path into the NHL. They start their career in Pittsburgh by staying at Mario's house. He takes them under his wing and "mentors" them.

I was reading some discussion where teh the usual questions was posed "Who is better, Crosby or Ovechkin?" Most said Ovechkin, but one guy replied " I was watching some news story that did a story on both of them. They were talking to Crosby and Mario's wife walks by with Crosby's laundry done and folded for him. Ovechkin's part of the interview was in his new home with a little bit of furniture and a mattress on the floor. Oveckin > Crosby!"

Seriously though, Mario, while he saved the team by buying it so far, is one of the worst cancers to young players. He has his way of how he "thinks" the game should be played. He has passed that brainwashing onto Jagr and Crosby. Both are 2 peas in a pod. I think Crosby would be a better player on another team than with the Pens and their svengali.

From the game recap: Notes: Pittsburgh D Rob Scuderi left the game late in the first period after being struck in the forehead with a slap shot by Mike Green. Scuderi, who went down to block the shot, bled onto the ice. ... (Maxime) Talbot left the game early in the third with an undisclosed injury and did not return. ... Before he left the game for good, (Sidney) Crosby had gone to the locker room briefly in the first period after he toppled over a laid-out Kozlov and fell hard onto his right side. He returned less than four minutes later.

No indication of what happened to Crosby that knocked him out of the game...

59 POINTS, BABY!!! And some other fun stats...

* Ovechkin has tied Jeff Carter for most goals again, and is 8 goals away from 200 career.

* Semin is 9 goals away from 100 career.

* Last game, Green got his 100th NHL point.

* This game, Laich got HIS 100th NHL point!

And Crosby was a -1 while Ovechkin was a +2. Semin was even for the night.

Am I the only one who would like to see Satan on the Devils?

@--Boo--: I've been saying the same thing abouth Satan since he was with the Sabres. I'm sure that sportswriters everywhere have been drooling over the mind-boggling alliterative possibilities for years, e.g.:

"Satan, Devils burn Rangers again"
"Satan steals Panthers' Souls in Overtime Win"

And if he were to become the GM or owner in NJ:

"Satan, Devils ink #6 pick to 6-year, $6M pact"

LOL

I miss Papa too.
doncosmic- I want the Peenies to make the playoffs so we can whip 'em like this four times.

@kevbnyc:

NOOOOOOOOO! we want the Pens to miss the playoffs, and will do anything in our power to make it so--have you forgotten the main reason we hate them is that they are the authors of more playoff misery for our Caps than any other NHL Team IN EITHER CONFERENCE--viz.:

--Caps go to 4 OT's, then lose the game and later the series.
--Caps have a 3-games-to-none edge, then lose that series too.
--Playoff game after playoff game, the Pens seemed to get just the bare minimum of goals needed to send us home for the summer. :,(

Almost all of those times, it seemed like the Pens' sole reason for existence was to keep the Caps from advancing beyond the first round of the playoffs, while progressing little or no further themselves.

Granted, recent history would SEEM to indicate that the Pittsburgh Monkey may be off our backs once and for all, but why take chances?

NOSIR, I want those b@$+@Rd$ to suffer badly, and be so far down in the standings that they have to look UP to see last place!

Will someone please create the web site www.die_pens_die.com? Pretty please? I have checked recently, and the domain seems to be available for sale...
