Sucks for Clymer, I was hoping he would get another chance at the NHL.

So is Clymer going to stay with the team as a depth guy, or will he be sent back to Hershey?

Hey all Caps Fans, we are getting legit!

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | January 8, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Is anyone watching the Av/Wings game? I hope the Avs are good and tired after this one!! :-)

Anyone going to the STH party on Thur?

Posted by: Boo! | January 8, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

That's pretty funny! :-) I can't figure out who is supposed to be on the left?!?

Posted by: Boo! | January 8, 2008 8:18 PM | Report abuse

Nylander, Clark, and Kozy. Yeah, funny!

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | January 8, 2008 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Nyls?!? Really?!? LOL!!! I would not have guessed that. Too funny.

Listening to BB's daily dialouge now. He's in such a groove it is hard to remember how new he is sometimes ... that is, until he says something that makes you chuckle. For example, he called PothiER Pot-EE-AA! :-) Sometimes I just want to pinch his cheek ...

Posted by: Boo! | January 8, 2008 8:28 PM | Report abuse

LOL...well you and my better half would get along great. Pinching a guys cheek is huh, not my thing but I hear ya. I just thought that BB is getting his due recognition in a good way via the "political" cartoon.

Lets Go Cap-I-Tals!!

Previous post @Boo!.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | January 8, 2008 8:36 PM | Report abuse

Aw, come on, you know you want to!! ;-) Or ... at least ... punch him in the arm! :-D

Posted by: Boo! | January 8, 2008 8:42 PM | Report abuse

BTW, where is everyone?!?

Posted by: Boo! | January 8, 2008 8:43 PM | Report abuse

I'm thinking about going to the STH party...I'm not sure really..I don't know if it'll be worth it or not. It may be fun though....anyone ever been? How is it?

Posted by: K | January 8, 2008 8:43 PM | Report abuse

I've been ... I'd say it's fun. It's a great way to get your jersey (or whatever) signed! There are funny moments, too. For example, as the players were introduced, Brash came out and did a runway model walk (really hammed it up), and then when Clark was asked to address the crowd, he smiled and said, "Hold on, I need to take my teeth out," and promptly put them in his pocket! :-D Pretty funny ...

Posted by: Boo! | January 8, 2008 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Who knows maybe I'll go but I don't have anything to sign :(
I'm still a relatively new fan so I haven't spent the money yet on a jersey yet...I can't decide whose to get!!!

Posted by: K | January 8, 2008 8:56 PM | Report abuse

K: They usually have free posters for you to take around and get autographed if you don't have a jersey yet. I personally printed some pictures I took with some of the team and want to get them autographed. It's fun just to walk around and see the players, get the locker room tour and see the press box. There are a lot of different events besides standing in line. I went last year and had a great time and will be going again this year.

watching the Avs game - it's a good game.
I want the Avs to win, so they'll feel superior for beating Detroit, and we'll get the two points.

I liked the owner corner... unless Ted's lying, it seems that we can count on AO, Green, Backstrom for a long time :)

Posted by: mauree | January 8, 2008 9:07 PM | Report abuse

I don't think that Ted would knowingly lie to us. I'm sure he truley believes that we will hold onto these guys for awhile and barring any weird circumstances I'm sure we will...I think he'll pay the money for these guys, they are super entertaining and can bring this city the Cup!

Posted by: K | January 8, 2008 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Not too surprising. What happens now?

Posted by: DC FURY | January 8, 2008 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Has Clymer always played defense before he got here or was that just in Tampa that he played D....could we use him here as a D-man under BB. I know he wasn't effective under Hanlon but BB seems to be able to get something out of these guys...

Posted by: Just_Curious | January 8, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

You are a STH and you don't have anything to sign?!? With all due respect, that's backwards! :-) You can buy something there (hat, shirt, whatever) or use the stuff that they give you. In terms of a jersey, my first jersey had no # on it - more room for autographs! ;-) Not that you could order one in time for the party, but ebay has good deals on jerseys (otherwise you can buy one at the VC).

Posted by: Boo! | January 8, 2008 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Hey mauree!!
Well, the Avs did not win ... but I am banking on them being tired for trying so hard tonight AND dejected from the loss when we see them tomorrow night!! ;-) BTW, ends up I am not going to the game; I will watch the beginning of the game on TV, head out for a skate later in the evening and then watch the rest on DVR. (So I guess I will be singing Happy Birthday from my couch.) LET'S GO CAPS!!

Posted by: Boo! | January 8, 2008 10:00 PM | Report abuse

He has played both for the Caps ... not sure what he is playing in Hershey?!?

Posted by: Boo! | January 8, 2008 10:01 PM | Report abuse

lol Boo! the optimistic :)... we'll see tomorrow.

For a skate??? Unless actual playing hockey or a chick is involved, how can you miss the Caps???

Man I wish I'll see the Happy Birthday chorus on tv tomorrow :) Somebody please make a sign!

Posted by: mauree | January 8, 2008 10:09 PM | Report abuse

:-P Hey, I'll still see the entire game, just not all real-time. It's all good!

Posted by: Boo! | January 8, 2008 10:38 PM | Report abuse

Those are really funny! Thanks for the link! I loved #23 with Crysbych. Did you notice the numbering? 87-16 and 87-76. Too funny.

On the Avs. They played a good game tonight against the Wings. Did you see how far up the Wings' D-men played? They were stopping them at Center ice! It looks like we need to keep pressure up all game against the Avs.

Just to stir the pot a little this is the latest rumor about OV in a deal with Nashville.

Nashville would send 2 #1's, Dumont, Zidlicky and Suter (possibly Weber depending on who you talk to ) to Washington for Ovechkin and Kolzig?

Take it for what's it's worth. This was posted on

All I am going to say is that the Caps would be foolish to not at least hear what the rest of the league would offer. I almost always think that 3-4 good hockey players are better than 1 great one. That would be a lot of Defensive help in one deal!

Posted by: Mike | January 9, 2008 12:03 AM | Report abuse

it's not good! This lack of passion will be seen by your coworkers... your company will soon face a crisis, and other companies will follow. Soon the US stock market will crash, followed by all other nation's markets. Economic, politic and religious anarchy will follow, with riots and war, until some wachos will fire nuclear warheads all around the earth.

Not watching the Caps will end the world as we know it.

Crikie, Boo! Better not let W find out about this! He'll label you as an econo-terrorist and send you to Gitmo.

Posted by: Greg S. | January 9, 2008 6:30 AM | Report abuse

Unless Ovechkin asks for a trade we'll have him a long time. He seems to enjoy it here and would be unlikely to have a team built around hi anywhere else. Any prospective city would either be unable to afford other stars or be a lower tier NHL city like DC in which case he's only be going back a few years in the same situation here. DC is a great town to be filthy rich in, and OV is and will be feelthy rich.

Ted would only want to lose him if he got to the point of giving up on selling hockey here and wanted to dump salary and have a boatload of picks so the team was attractive to somebody who planned to buy and move it. I think that day is far off, and will move further from the realm of the possible as OV and the team win more.

Moving foward I expect to see OV and key others (Green, Backstrom, Alzner, etc) get paid well to bring this team up into the more respectable ranks of the NHL. Hopefully BB will continue as he has (his record translates as a 100+ point season.

Singing Happy Birthday for Bruce tonight?

Speak up if you'll sing tonight!

I hadn't heard anything and was wondering if nobody was into it...but I saw a couple references to it so I think I'm obligated!

The Plan: As the first TV time out after 10:00 in the second period starts we start (note the red light by the Caps penalty box). Anybody who can, make a small sign (Happy Birthday Bruce {Gabby} is all we need) so others will know what's up.

Spead the word!

Posted by: TheCapitalist | January 9, 2008 6:35 AM | Report abuse

I see that our hard work in OT against Montreal has resulted in C Price (goalie) getting sent back to the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs. Price played a key roll in defeating the Hershey Bears 2nd Calder Cup run, so it was only fitting that Green (playing Bears D) potted the game winning goal.

Regarding the ridiculous trade talk with Nashville...

I'd keep Ovechkin. If he goes, I'll be rooting for another team.

Plus, 3-4 good players is nice if you're trying to get to the second round of the playoffs.

I'll take my chances with us building a team around Ovechkin. We want the Cup. :D

i should have known better than to suggest such a radical idea to someone who stays up until the wee hours of the AM in italy to watch a game live! lol!! i only hopped on free access computers at my hotels in europe from time to time for recaps from tarik and ... i am clearly not a REAL fan! :-P

It is the annual party for season ticket holders. All of the players are there signing autographs, they do a big presentation, there are games, locker room and other tours, etc.. STH's get the party tickets in the mail.

Posted by: Boo! | January 9, 2008 8:32 AM | Report abuse

the season ticket holder party is a meet and greet event for season ticket holders (duh). The players are set up at tables with varying length lines to get autographs (I got Brashear to sign my Hanson Brother's Chiefs jersy last year - just trying to catch the spirit of the thing) and then there are activities, and some presentations. A highlight for me is the tours of the press box (meeting Joe B and Lacher), Ted's seats, the locker room etc. I've said hello to Ted a couple times. It's a fun experience. If you aren't a STH, call up a buddy who is, I think we all get a ticket per season ticket. (I have two seats, so I'll be there with me wife),

Posted by: TheCapitalist | January 9, 2008 8:36 AM | Report abuse

I won't be there to sing, after all, but I will be looking for it on TV! :-D I hope they show it. Regardless, I bet loud guy will be willing to pitch in ...

Here's the translation of Ovechkin interview with Sport-Express, Jan. 9

Posted by: alexovetjkin | January 9, 2008 9:44 AM | Report abuse

I suspect if you get Goat (the aforementioned "loud guy") to participate in singing to Gabby, there won't be any problems getting the rest of the fans to join in. My 3 companions and I are ready to sing! GO CAPS!

Posted by: Anonymous | January 9, 2008 9:44 AM | Report abuse

If you want this "Happy Birthday" thing to pick up any steam at all, the place to post about it is on the Caps message boards. And even though "loud guy" (Goat) visits this blog, it might be best to call attention to it on a discussion forum with lots of season ticket holders/game attendees, where it is sure to be noticed. Most people come to this blog to find out the latest, but not everyone reads through the comments. There are only a handful of consistent commenters here and no one is gonna hear the song if only 5 people are singing it...

1. the offer of 7 mil from Russia (tax free) translates into 14 mil NHL

2. The Russian club mentioned is definitely Dynamo Moscow. Ovechkin's Mom is the President, GM and Head Coach of women's basketball Dynamo team.

I hate to say this but I'm getting really sick and tired of hearing about Alex Ovechkin. All this contract nonsense is a real drag. Day in day out people are trying to stir up the pot and all this other stuff. It's putting a really sour taste in my mouth. To the point where I just feel like if the kid wants to leave then leave already. Of course it's not him that's saying it but the media. Either way I'm tired of hearing about AO!!!!

Posted by: Stop_the_nonsense | January 9, 2008 9:58 AM | Report abuse

Nice alexovetjkin!
That pretty much squashes the fantasies of sports writers from other markets.

Posted by: slappy | January 9, 2008 9:58 AM | Report abuse

Mauree has an excuse. He can play all the time zones so it just seems like he doesn't sleep at all.

I used to fly all over the US and Canada, but not now. Maybe changing soon, though, I hope. As it is, I get a good 4 hours or so a night. I don't seem to need much so long as it's quality.

Frankly, I don't give a horses pittooie what W thinks either. Actually, I'm not too sure he does, does he? Think, I mean?

Posted by: Greg S. | January 9, 2008 9:59 AM | Report abuse

It was kind of amusing in that translation (thanks alexovetjkin) how the interviewer was pretty clearly trying to point Alex towards returning to Russia.

Assuming that translation is accurate, it really should put to rest most of the concern on this board, and allow us to ignore all the stupid articles of how AO wants to leave DC.

I may be naive, but he sounded pretty sincere about wanting to stay in DC. There are plenty of times when an athlete says he wants to stay but you can read through the lines -- in this case, it sure seems like AO wants to stay here.

Posted by: Jeff | January 9, 2008 10:02 AM | Report abuse

Who is W?

You are tired of hearing about Alex? Do you know who he is?

I liked the article from alexovetjkin. It was the first article that actually game me a good feeling.

Posted by: 828 | January 9, 2008 10:04 AM | Report abuse

Of course I know who he is and I love him and think he's a great player, I'm just sick of hearing about his contract. Ted's not stupid and gmgm's job is on the line as it is so why do people insist on continuing to believe the rumors?!

Posted by: Stop_the_nonsense | January 9, 2008 10:07 AM | Report abuse

Don't get me wrong, I hate the rumors too... however, like I said, this last one should put us to rest and not worry about those other rumors.

What I was trying to say. As long as Alex is THE Alexander Ovechkin, we will be hearing about all sorts of stuff. He is Mr. Spot Light right now... I guess it comes with the package of being a superstar, ya know?

Posted by: 828 | January 9, 2008 10:11 AM | Report abuse

Papa Ovechkin made me smile.

But back to the topic *:O* Is clyms getting a call-up too? Obviously no other team asked us to put him on waivers. Is maybe this a thing the Caps can do once every month or so, and this is our first chance since? Any idea, Tarik?

Posted by: Whiter Mage | January 9, 2008 10:14 AM | Report abuse

Thanks, guys...
I have to admit, I am taking a treatment for an addiction to Tarik's blog, but I couldn't refuse for posting this interview. It's too good. (Going back to the treatment facility)

Posted by: alexovetjkin | January 9, 2008 10:14 AM | Report abuse

That interview you translated has confirmed it for me. There's no freakin' way AO is leaving here. He's playing the media for chumps and they don't even see it.

"Q.: Well, seriously, what are the chances percentage wise to stay in Washington?

A.: Right now? If I am still with the team, 100%"

So, if he's still with the team (the Caps) his chances of staying in DC are 100%. Since the Caps aren't moving anywhere... And we all know that he won't be traded last of all to Nashville (who the heck wants to live there?). Seriously, Nashville is a nice place, it's just not a hockey town, and not a place for me.

"Q.: What if you'll have an offer from Russia for the same money?
A.: I already have it. But I won't tell from whom exactly.
Q.: And? Do you seriously think about it?
A.: No. Russia is my second priority.
Q.: Why?
A.: Because my dream was to play in NHL. Of course being back home, with my relatives and girlfriend would be nice... But my relatives can visit me, my girlfriend can live here, it can all can be solved."

So he's not going to Mother Russia unless it's in retirement. This kid is thinking very clearly.

The really telling one is:

"Q.: The Caps have problem with all that I named. Not too many wins, no ongoing contract negotiations and not a hockey town. Do you think there's a big chance you'd be elsewhere next season?
A.: Anything can happen. Why not? But if we are talking about what I want, then I want to stay here and play for Washington Capitals. So far everything fits me."

He'll be hear next year. So ignore all that crap coming out of Canada.

Sport-express have a reputation for starting rumors and making up interviews. Semin told so last summer. Apparently, a lot of his "interviews" were made up by the paper. I wonder what the % of truth is in this article.

Posted by: Finn | January 9, 2008 10:20 AM | Report abuse

@ Greg S.,

Great point about Nashville. Not a bad place, but in terms of it being a hockey market....people think we're bad? That place makes us look like Montreal.

I agree, but so does N/A press. Montreal Gazzete, Larry Brooks, Detroit Press, not to mention Eklund.

As for Slava Malamud who interviewed Ovechkin, I don't remember him making up something. But you are right, there's no guarantee.

Regarding your question on what position Clymer is playing with the Bears. He is playing Right Wing. If Fehr does indeed play tonight against Norfolk, it will be interesting to see on what line he plays.
