Cooke Fined For Hit

Caps wing Matt Cooke has been fined $2,500 for his hit on Vincent Lecavalier, a league source confirmed to me moments ago. Cooke leveled the Lightning star with an open ice hit in the third period of the Caps' 4-1 victory at Verizon Center, seriously injuring Lecavalier's shoulder. Lecavalier is in Tampa tonight being examined by team doctors.

The fine amount is the maximum allowed under the CBA.

What BS, Vinnie was setting a pick, this is crap to appease Torts, but no suspension so If you need help paying Cooke, pass a hat Saturday and you will make money off the hit!

Posted by: Bob | April 4, 2008 6:22 PM | Report abuse

Cooke got fined? Hunh? It was a hard hit, but it was clean. He an Vinny were skating for the puck and Cooke caught Vinny under the shoulder, that's it.

I certainly hope the next announcement is of several suspensions int onext season for Tampa and several massive fines including one an Torts.

Posted by: EricS | April 4, 2008 6:24 PM | Report abuse

Speaking of fineable offenses from last night's game, I noticed that right before the Bradley fight, it appeared that the ref motioned the Lightning player to go to the bench. Looking at the box score, I think it was Jason Ward. I'm not sure if it was because of a disallowed line change or that the Bolts would have had too many men because of the penalties. The player skated toward the bench, looked over his shoulder, stayed on the ice as the puck dropped then went over and instigated the fight. Is the league looking into that? I think everyone in the arena could read what was about to happen and what his intentions were.

Posted by: Charles | April 4, 2008 6:25 PM | Report abuse

How about a fine for having 5 guys on the ice instead of the four your supposed to have in the last min of a game. then one of them starts a fight. this is a serious step back for the league.

Posted by: livinit | April 4, 2008 6:26 PM | Report abuse

Wow - that should guarantee a hefty fine and suspension for Tortella for allowing an extra player on the ice before/during a fight.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 4, 2008 6:26 PM | Report abuse

Tarik,

No word on fines/suspensions against the lightning?

Posted by: Yosh | April 4, 2008 6:29 PM | Report abuse

What a load of BS. The hit was clean and if anything, Torty should be fined for his behavior.

Posted by: Kip | April 4, 2008 6:31 PM | Report abuse

The hit was not clean at all. Granted a pick was being set, but it still against the rules to hit a player not playing the puck.

Posted by: Yosh | April 4, 2008 6:32 PM | Report abuse

Yosh, it's a penalty at best for interference, and given that Vinny skated INTO the play, it wasn't even that.

What a load of crap.

Posted by: Westmorland | April 4, 2008 6:36 PM | Report abuse

Was there a penalty called on Cooke for the play? Nope. So, we have two options:

1) The hit was clean and Torty the Angry Tortoise whined and was placated by the league, or

2) The refs are just as bad as people say they are and don't know the rules of the game well enough to call the penalty.

Either way, the whole situation's a freaking joke.

Posted by: Kip | April 4, 2008 6:36 PM | Report abuse

Ridiculous. Clean play, he was going for the puck and Vinny got in the way. The puck was a couple feet away, it wasn't from behind and it wasn't high. Ridiculous.

Anyone else think that John Torts looks like a guy who should be the general manager of a pizza shop?

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | April 4, 2008 6:36 PM | Report abuse

umm WHAT?!?!

I've watched that hit over and over again, and I don't see any reason why Cooke should be fined. Cookie, to me, looked like he was trying to hit the outside guy, but Lecalvier got in the way. To me it seemed like Lecalvier wanted to hit Cookie.

Posted by: elicea | April 4, 2008 6:39 PM | Report abuse

Tarik, this is your opportunity to shine. The Caps' fans deserve an official explanation on the disallowed goal, the instigation by TB's players at the end of the game and lack of proper punishment, the fine on Cooke, etc. etc. It is not enough to tell us that it happened, tell us why the league acted the way they did.

Posted by: Opita | April 4, 2008 6:42 PM | Report abuse

A fine for Cooke but none for Hamilton's interference hit on Big Mo?

I'm going to have to agree to disagree with you and everyone else apparently. Do I think a fine is deserved. Not at all, but was it a clean play? Absolutely not. Lecavalier was not playing the puck, nor was he attempting too. He was in between Cooke and the puck/carrier...you can't just steam roll someone because he's in your way.

It is nice that Bob and Old Bob agree. It was clearly a pick attempt. The reason he didn't see it coming was because he was turned so it would look like he didn't attempt one or at least could make the claim.

There has got to be some fine or suspension for Tampa too. I mean at the very least, Tortolini should be fined for that weak beard.

"The refs didn't put Cooke in the box, eh? I guess they saw a clean hit too.

Did you watch any of the game last night? How about the 2-3 missed trips on Gordon that weren't called? Refs don't catch everything as they're human. This isn't the first time that the NHL has levied a fine on a hit that wasn't called a penalty that should have been. I seem to remember one coming out of a game in Nashville last year. Has this hit gone the other way you all would be screaming bloody murder at the dirty hit, but because the tables are not reversed you are incapable of seeing the hit through objective eyes.

Posted by: Yosh | April 4, 2008 6:53 PM | Report abuse

And for those of you that actually believe this garbage

this is crap to appease Torts

then you are no better than the Canes fans that believe the NHL is fixing it so the Caps make the playoffs.

Another incident of a dirty hit that caused a fine but no suspension/penalty...remember that spear on Ovie last year?

Posted by: Yosh | April 4, 2008 6:55 PM | Report abuse

Weak. It was a perfectly fine hit. Just because I guy gets really badly hurt doesn't make it a penalty through some magic. Its a contact sport. Stuff happens.

Posted by: old time hockey | April 4, 2008 6:57 PM | Report abuse

Yeesssh Yosh, you're the only one in here with that opinion.

Looked like a pick from Vinny. He's a smart player. I'm sure he knew what he was doing and didn't expect the smaller Cooke to roll him over.

How about fining the refs for disallowing the Caps first goal. Talk about a blown call!

Wish Tarik had some info on the Lightning fines. I'm sure they're coming.

Come on Caps, one more win to go!

Unleash the Fury!

Posted by: Nils | April 4, 2008 6:57 PM | Report abuse

Wait!!
So how does Cooke get fined when they basically ran into each other and Lecavalier put his shoulder into Cooke as well? How do they not get fined for starting the fights at the end of the game?

Posted by: Thomas | April 4, 2008 6:58 PM | Report abuse

@Steve,

Totally. Torts sends 5 skating punching bags out on 4 man unit? You don't need a slide rule to figure this out. He deserves a 10K+ fine, and all the Ward and Oeullete should be suspended for the last game.

Posted by: old time hockey | April 4, 2008 6:59 PM | Report abuse

I've watched the hit probably 30 times today. Lecavalier looks right at Cooke and skates into him as much as the reverse, although without as much force. Good, hard, clean hit.

Posted by: uncatim | April 4, 2008 7:01 PM | Report abuse

reputation is playing a role here - if it were Lecavalier hitting Cooke and the result were the same, I doubt we'd see the maximum allowable fine.

Posted by: dmg | April 4, 2008 7:01 PM | Report abuse

I just watched the play again, Vinnie looked at Cooke coming and went to check him. If it was interference it should have been on Vinnie, he went after Cooke because Cooke had already hit Oulette. This is beyond stupid, can't wait to hear how they hammer Torts.

Posted by: Bob | April 4, 2008 7:02 PM | Report abuse

everyone else :)

Exactly another example of a missed/horrible call.

Looked like a pick from Vinny.

I'm aware it was a pick. But the rules of hockey do not differentiate between a player without the puck and a player without the puck setting a pick.

So how does Cooke get fined when they basically ran into each other and Lecavalier put his shoulder into Cooke as well?

Again, what game were you watching? That's not the way I saw it at all. Granted I was actually at the game watching. If someone has a link to the video I'd love to see it and be proven wrong.

Again the refs missing a call does not mean the NHL will not review it. They review all heavy/controversial hits the day after the games.

Posted by: Yosh | April 4, 2008 7:06 PM | Report abuse

I don't get this. Furthermore, if Tortorella doesn't get fined/suspended, it's a big blow on my faith in NHL officials and NHL in general.

dmg,
Good point. I would wager that we wouldn't see any fine, period.

If you start looking and fining hits like that, then the league should look at the hit on Morrison. Or, maybe go back and look at the hit from Lucic that put Pothier out for the season.

Lecavalier is never one to back off of hitting anyone either. He knows what this game is about. Maybe the NHL needs to have its players wear fat suits, with foamy cushion protection so no one gets hurt ever again.

Posted by: uncatim | April 4, 2008 7:12 PM | Report abuse

I hear ya, but to me Cooke was going after the Puck and Vinny stepped in front. You're also not allowed to interfere with a player trying to play the puck. It was incidental contact, Cooke looked like he pulled up on Vinny, only knocking Vinny off balance. Vinny didn't go down until his own player bumped into him.

At least thats how I saw it after 2.5 hours of happy hour.

I'm just going to have to agree to disagree with everyone. There's no way I'm going to be able to convince anyone different...or vice versa. I don't believe it deserves the maximum fine. I do believe it was a missed call by the refs, and was not a clean hit, because by definition an illegal hit is dirty.

Posted by: Gui | April 4, 2008 7:22 PM | Report abuse

I just can't see that it was clearly a dirty hit. I think this is purely based on Cooke's reputation as an agitator and Lecavlier's big name status.

I watched that hit 15 times last night. I don't see how in the world it warrants a fine. Cooke was going after the puck, Lecavlier gets in front with his head down then SEES COOKE and gets hit. Just not dirty. That's hockey.

And Yosh, I completely disagree - this isn't basketball, picks are illegal in hockey. If they fined Cooke then they should have fined Bradley/Laich when he (Don't remember which one) bowled over the TB player throwing a pick in front of the net on the forecheck.

What BS...

Philly loss= good
Cane's loss= Very good
Boston/Ottawa, someone wins but in regulation = good.

One of these means the Caps win tomorrow and are in the playoffs?
If Cane's lose, A cap win or overtime loss= the three seed?

All these probabilities are making my head hurt...

fine is a joke. only trying to appease tortorella who is a major league a hole but i guess they want to make him happy since his team sucks so bad. and yosh, an illegal hit does not mean its a dirty hit. there are plenty of hits which are against the rules but are not dirty. dirty can be defined many ways, but i would say any intentional hit to a vulnerable spot or a blindside hit would be considered dirty. this hit was neither and vinny deserves as much blame as cooke. in fact, i think if vinny hadn't lifted his arm to take the hit he may not have gotten hurt. and if he doesnt get hurt there is no fine.

Being from Vancouver and hearing about the fine I was extremely excited to see another gargantuan Matt Cooke Hit!

Then I saw the highlight and thought to myself "that's it?!" I had to replay it several times to even get a sense of what kind of contact was made.

Matt Cooke has thrown many worse hits than that, even just in this season and other than upset members of other teams nothing has come of it in terms of fine or suspension.

If it wasn't Vincent Lecavalier then there would be no fine. This is nothing more or less than the NHL's 2 tier discipline system at work.

The current Director of Officiating is Stephen Walkom. I did not know about Van Hellemond. Whoa.

"Walkom is a former NHL referee, until retiring August 3, 2005 when he elevated to the management position. Walkom succeeded Andy Van Hellemond as director of officiating, who resigned under controversy in mid-July 2004."

"Given all of the suspensions thus far in the NHL 2007-2008 season and the increase in aggression and violence on the ice has made many argue that Walkom is not the right man for this type of leadership role."

We seem to generally agree Vinnie was playing the "I'm just hanging out here, oops, where's the puck, am I in your way?" game.

Right or wrong I've always smashed that player into the puck carrier and I don't think I ever got called. Cooke didn't even do that, I think he was going for the puck - check mode yes - but going for the puck.

The league is making a statement to be careful around skill players.

Okay, I am still confused. Guess the debate here shows that you could look at the Cooke hit in many ways. It is done, but does not affect my opinion of Cooke. He is going out of his way to fit in with this team and warm up to the fans. Great pick up.

But what is the other way to look at what Tortorella (sp) did at the end of the game? If that is not sending goons out with the explicit intent to instigate what is? It is a good thing nobody was hurt in that fight. Otherwise Torts might find himself in the same spot that Bertuzzi's former coach was in.

Is it just me or have the NHL officials just plain stunk this year. I can think of at least 3 games alone that the officials knocked down or interfered with players (two were Caps games). Does the NHL have a rating system like the NFL, where only the best officials get the playoff gigs?

Petty's been good, he works hard every shift and never takes a night off. In a crushing loss last night he was one a handful of Canucks who actually looked like they cared out there, and he battling through the flu and suited up as a game time decision.

I'm beginning to wonder why Ottawa and Boston are even bothering to skate the first 60 minutes of the game. They've clearly decided to decide this game with 5 minutes of play and possibly a shootout.

Goalies might need a second warmup. They're going to get cramps just standing there the whole time.

Cooke's hit should have been called an interference but should not have recieved a fine.

I think it's reasonable to assume that if it was not a star player in Vinny Lecavalier who was the victim and/or he didn't get injured there would be no fine.

There should also be a fine on Torts for trying to stir it up at the end of the game...completely unwarranted. Having said that, I still like him as a coach and I think he's the right choice to coach the US Team.

Maybe the best for Ottawa would just be to be kicked off the playoffs spots, they won't go through the first round anyway with Alfredson out and with such a shaky goaltending, just save them from embaracement.

Posted by: Gui | April 4, 2008 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Here's my take on the hit and fine after watching the ESPN highlight reel several times:

Cooke and Lecavalier didn't see each other until the last minute. Lecavalier saw Cooke about half a stride before they collided. Cooke saw Lecavalier a smidge before that, and instead of trying to avoid him, set himself for a hit. It wasn't dirty, it wasn't cheap, it wasn't necessarily illegal, but he got fined because he set himself instead of trying to avoid the collision. Yosh, what do you think?

Posted by: Gelf | April 4, 2008 8:59 PM | Report abuse

New subject.

Have tix for tomorrows game. But I don't have a red caps jersey. I have a white road jersey. Likewise my boy has an old black jersey.

Question: Better to wear Caps sweaters, or better to wear something else that's red?

Posted by: uncatim | April 4, 2008 9:06 PM | Report abuse

gelf, good description, but i really think the only reason he got fined only because vinny got hurt. vinny could have avoided the contact too. either could have been called for interference but weren't. its a head scratcher. i see worse hits every game but no fines...

Posted by: Cap Fan 1 | April 4, 2008 9:06 PM | Report abuse

@ Drew: Go with how you feel, brother. Wear the jerseys with pride. AZs long as they say Caps on them, alls good IMHO.

Exactly -- Ottawa has clinched.

It's impossible to say who the Caps will play (IF they win Saturday) in the first round.

It could be Ottawa, Boston or Philadelphia, depending on whether Boston wins its last game against Buffalo and whether Philadelphia wins its last game against Pittsburgh.

Bruce needs to have the boys ready to take advantage of this opportunity.

Nine penalties against Florida, none against Carolina.

Posted by: katzistan | April 4, 2008 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Did you see this? I've posted it 3 hours ago:

"I do feel the spell will be broken," Wrenn said by telephone Thursday.

"Right now we can spoil other teams' party of going to the playoffs," center Olli Jokinen said. "Our job's not going to change. Being in the playoffs or not, we have to go there and try to get two points. After that, there's one more game in Washington. We want to win that one, too."

As for tonight's game, Jokinen said with a smile after Tuesday's win at Atlanta, "maybe [Caps star Alexander] Ovechkin is going to call us to tell us to get two points."

I know this has been hashed to death (probably - I haven't read all the posts yet), but there's no way that LeC DIDN'T see the hit coming! They made eye-contact for cryin' out loud! How is that a fine??? Because a player with a bit of a rep hit a high skilled player? What about poor Mo's shot? The puck was nowhere near him when he got hit. In this play, the puck is practically between LeC's feet!

This is so bogus it isn't even funny.

no tie in Ottawa

Posted by: uncatim | April 4, 2008 10:01 PM | Report abuse

We are equal with the Canes on points but some of the Canadian sites have us listed in the 3rd seed due to winning percentage.

Anybody as confused as I am?

Posted by: pmoravek | April 4, 2008 10:03 PM | Report abuse

Aw man, had to settle for watching PHI-NJ. Devils slept-walked through most of it, not surprising. Philly played inspired hockey. They will be a tough out for whoever they end up playing (hopefully Pens)

So did Boston win already or what?

Posted by: geauxcaps | April 4, 2008 10:03 PM | Report abuse

I am just itching for the after game interviews of the 'Canes to come up.

Posted by: keef | April 4, 2008 10:03 PM | Report abuse

pmoravek - remember, the first tie-breaker is games played.

Once the Caps play tomorrow night they'll both have 82 and it won't matter.

But for now, technically, we're in first place in the SE

OV played great last night after a so-so game against Carolina. I think he realized he can't let the big game get to him and try to do too much. That basically means he's gonna play awesome the way everyone expects him to.

Just under 21 hours to see OV in the biggest game of his career.

Hang on a minute! I just checked TSN.CA. They have the Caps in 3rd! I thought Carolina had the tie breaker on us?

@Rob

But we could (theoretically) lose tomorrow outright which would have us tied in points. Still have to go through all that rigamarole to figure out the tie breakers, because we each have 92 points.

Like I said, I'll have to check...

Get a point and we are 3rd. Lose and we golf...Plain and simple.

The rumors were true...1 team from the SE. 1 pt and it's us. If we go to OT, we can basically walk off the ice...as we should and probably will.

The Florida radio announcers were pretty funny cracking about the disparity in the PPs handed out. 9 Carolina PPs to zero. Crazy. I would give just about any non-vital organ to be at Verizon tomorrow night.

Posted by: Fletch | April 4, 2008 10:26 PM | Report abuse

Greg S....unfortunately for the Caps, we were 4-4 against the Canes. They were 4-3-1 agains the caps. That means we had 8 points, they had 9. Tie breaker goes to them. We need a point to avoid that.

Posted by: Rob | April 4, 2008 10:28 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Rob | April 4, 2008 10:29 PM | Report abuse

Again, Ovie had won the game vs. Boltz, but he could be not at his best tomorrow. It is usually like that for him, in cycles.

We almost "lost" to Bolts, it can happen again, being behind, etc. And who could've imagine Cane would lose? Be prepared and remember the Miracle the other way.

The team must play their best game of the season, just don't hope that Great Eight is going to save you, go and play your hearts out.

And this is what I expect from the team. And this is what I really really hope and believe would happen. Second scoring must be first scoring tomorrow.

Go Caps! BELIEVE!!!

Greg S. --

If the Caps lose in regulation (God and Ovie forbid), the Canes and Caps each have 92 points but the Canes have one more win. They'd be in 3rd, the Caps would be out.

If the Caps get at least one point, they have more points than the Canes and the Caps are in 3rd.

Posted by: Joe B | April 4, 2008 10:31 PM | Report abuse

I keep thinking back to the Caps eliminating the Thrash two years ago in what was essentially a meaningless game for the Caps.

And then, why did Mo pick now to get injured???

Yes, I've been a Caps fan for 30 years. I am a deeply ingrained cynic.

Posted by: katzistan | April 4, 2008 10:32 PM | Report abuse

That was heart attack stuff in the Canes - Florida game. Thank god they held on. Vokoun left the game with back spasms and Anderson looked like he pulled something in the 3rd, but had no choice but to stay in. At that moment I thought, "That would be Caps luck if Florida has to put a skater in net for the rest of the game up by just a goal.

Tomorrow night is our game 7, but we've had so many of them recently.

The fine is absolutely ridiculous. It was interference at best. And I AM looking at it with "objective eyes". Cooke was trying to hit the guy behind Vinny. Vinny got in the way. They both saw each other at the last moment. Cooke lowered his shoulder to brace for the hit. Vinny didn't. The injury was not even caused by the hit itself, but by the awkward fall. The fine is ridiculous. I'm waiting for the fines on Tampa for the last minute shenanigans.

Posted by: ranndino | April 4, 2008 10:33 PM | Report abuse

OK...Dope slap me. First tie breaker is fewer number of games played. We've played one fewer (one in hand) so we're advantaged to Carolina.

On the others:

1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).

We've played one fewer game. Our points per game is 1/1,000,000,000,000th better (slight exaggeration).

2. The greater number of games won.

If we win or have an OTL tomorrow, this is moot. If we lose, Carolina becomes the SE Division champs. They've won 43 games to our 42.

3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.

This won't be a factor. If we win or OTL we have the championship. If we lose, Carolina is the champ based upon the number of games won (see above).

4. The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.

This won't be a factor. If we win or OTL we have the championship. If we lose, Carolina is the champ based upon the number of games won (see above).

IF IF IF the Caps beat Florida tomorrow night they could play Philly, Ottawa, Boston or even the RANGERS.

A Boston win Saturday gives them 96 points, same as NY. If the Rangers lose their final game on Sunday, the two teams would be tied with identical records. And the Bruins hold the tie-breaker, which would send them to fifth place.

There are so many possibilities that it makes no sense for the Caps to focus on them. Just beat the Panthers.

@Boo

Cats were very good at turnovers and countering... At least one goal was scored by Cats when they were in PK.

I can tell you, it reminded me a game Bolts played in the first two. The reason Canes lost is because they don't have Ovechkin.

This game should be analyzed and shown to the team because they can do the same to Caps tomorrow.

Posted by: King Huet | April 4, 2008 11:11 PM | Report abuse

@ pmoravek -- The reason we are listed third and Carolina is 9th is because the first tie breaker is games played...and we have played one less game than Carolina right now (81 to 82). The next tie breaker is "wins". Eitherway, we still need 1 point to stay there, becuase after tomorrow each team will have played the same number of games, so what will matter is points first...then number of wins.

Make sense?

BOS: BOS gets 1 point and PHL gets 1 or fewer points

After finally seeing the hit..there's no way on god's green earth that's interference. Vinny saw Cooke coming in for the puck (which Oullet had just lost), turned, and threw his shoulder at him. Cooke saw him set up in time and threw his shoulder. It was a collision, at worst, and clean hit by both players (shoulder-on-shoulder). At the time contact was made, the closest player to the puck was Cooke.

The no-call on the ice was correct. The hit was clean, and the fine should not have been applied to Cooke. I guess that's what you get for having a reputation...
