I wonder if Locker feels threatened?

Ooo hockey and football tonight. I'm in heaven.

I miss the live chats!

And Dallas wonders why the owners are trying to sell the team, look like dress like an empty seat night in the big D.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 2, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Seriously, can I move to Dallas so I can get lower bowl seats. Looks like no one is there.

Posted by: nfb987 | December 2, 2010 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Fehr is just SNAKEBIT!!!!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 2, 2010 8:45 PM | Report abuse

I don't know why my comment about seeing why Dallas is having issues selling the team and it being dress like an empty seat night in the Big D but I will try again.

Also I will add my name to the list of those who hate the twitter thing. I would rather just post on the lineup thread then have another one created right after for no real reason.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 2, 2010 8:46 PM | Report abuse

omg... just noticing the empty seats. Thats crazy! It seems so silent.... no background noise...

Posted by: vm114 | December 2, 2010 8:46 PM | Report abuse

So far so good. Fehr missing on a glorious opportunity! Liked how Hannan took the body and didn't even care where the puck was. Our young D should learn a lot from that guy...

Posted by: sca187 | December 2, 2010 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Now the first comment shows up.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 2, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Hockey is a hard sell in the South. I should know, I'm from MS. My fam and friends think I'm crazy for liking and watching hockey. No one wants to go with me to see the MS Surge (used to be MS Sea Wolves before Hurricane Katrina).

Website s*ck tonight....didn't recognize my login at for about 10 minutes.

Posted by: nfb987 | December 2, 2010 8:50 PM | Report abuse

I flipped over from the SJ-Ottawa game and am noticing that our D is quite nimble compared to most other teams. Not good if Erskine is hurt. He's been playing great hockey and filling his role very well... My fingers are crossed.

Posted by: sca187 | December 2, 2010 8:52 PM | Report abuse

erskine off the bench.... not a good sign.

Hendricks is one scrappy dude. I like em more each game.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 2, 2010 9:03 PM | Report abuse

the thing with twitter is that its not a converstation about the game, but just a list of random thoughts. its annoying!

Posted by: vm114 | December 2, 2010 9:03 PM | Report abuse

Wow! Matty H. was throwin' em. He's quite the determined fighter. Gotta love getting fighting props from Alan May.

Posted by: sca187 | December 2, 2010 9:04 PM | Report abuse

I know there are many who want GMGM to be more agressive, but I have to say that the Chimera and Hendricks deals have been two of my favorites.

Posted by: nfb987 | December 2, 2010 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Oh Ovie....come on....

Posted by: nfb987 | December 2, 2010 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Well Chim-Chim for Clark is good, considering how much Clark went south. Flash for a S@H defender, looks like it can be good.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | December 2, 2010 9:08 PM | Report abuse

More whiffing by Ovie.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 2, 2010 9:09 PM | Report abuse

NFB, I'd have to agree with you on that. We gave up Clark and Jurcina for Chimera. I'd say we got the best of that one. And Matty H. was a FA signing. Good character guy. This team has become much more complete. I'll give some credit to the undertaker...

Posted by: sca187 | December 2, 2010 9:11 PM | Report abuse

I'm very happy with our pick up of Hannan. I like Flash, but our need was defense. smart move by GMGM

Posted by: vm114 | December 2, 2010 9:12 PM | Report abuse

Looks like we should of had Mr. King in the lineup tonight.

Posted by: nfb987 | December 2, 2010 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Looks like maybe we shoulda dressed King?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 2, 2010 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Could this be the night that OV throws down? I'm anxiously awaiting that. I bet he would be a BEAST to tango with... Great team solidarity! Great job OV!

@sca187

welcome to the Erskine bandwagon :)

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 2, 2010 9:19 PM | Report abuse

15 SOGs, maybe 3 scoring chances?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 2, 2010 9:20 PM | Report abuse

Looks like they gave Ovie 2 for roughing at the end there.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 2, 2010 9:21 PM | Report abuse

@vermont

I've been a CAPS fan for more than half my life (and I'm not under 40), and LOVED it when they picked up Erskine. When paired with the right guy, he can lead by example and show some character. He's one of those guys that will kill his own Mother to win. Plays with heart. Those are the guys we need. We have more of them now. I'll try to sit in the middle of the wagon so as not to flatten one of the tires...

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 2, 2010 9:41 PM | Report abuse

@vermont

Yeah, I'm pretty awesome. Ha!

Wow! OV doesn't look so good tonight. I think he should sacrifice for the team and THROW DOWN! Show what being Kaptain is all about. I think they should let him put a "K" on his jersey. LET'S GO CAPS! LET'S GO CAPS! LET'S GO CAPS!

Looks like the ice might just suck a*s tonight.

Posted by: sca187 | December 2, 2010 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin looks like he is forcing things and not just letting things come.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 2, 2010 9:42 PM | Report abuse

I think it might be time to move Ovi to a wing on the PP. Stick Green and Carlson on the Blue line.

Posted by: nfb987 | December 2, 2010 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Hannan and Erskine look mean near the crease, good

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | December 2, 2010 9:43 PM | Report abuse

@sca187 I don't ever want to see Ovechkin fight. Ask Colorado and Chris Stewart if it is a good idea to have a scorer fight.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 2, 2010 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Instead of changing things, let's let OV get his own game back. He'll be fine. He's fighting himself but that will change in time. We're doing great as a team and that's what matters the most.

It's great the Hannan is ready for a cup run. I am too...

Posted by: sca187 | December 2, 2010 9:47 PM | Report abuse

total faith in OV... he may not be scoring goals right now but he has been making plays and getting others the puck to score. I loved his pass to Backstrom yesterday for the empty net goal.

Posted by: vm114 | December 2, 2010 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Interesting at the end of that PK we had two rookies Alzner and Gordon.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 2, 2010 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Dumb move Sarge.

Is this the same ref crew as last night?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 2, 2010 9:51 PM | Report abuse

schultz finally gets physical - and end up in the box for 2

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | December 2, 2010 9:52 PM | Report abuse

It is amazing how other teams are getting away with breaking our sticks in the last few games.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 2, 2010 9:52 PM | Report abuse

@ icehammer

I think OV needs to establish himself as that kind of force as well. He's the captain and should lead by example. At least once, I think it would be good to see him do the thing. It would rally this team and bring them even closer, regardless of the outcome. I feel bad for Colorado, but Stewart is that kind of leader. Things happen.

But make no mistake, I respect your opinion 100% and always have.

Calls this period on Schultz, Knuble, and Hannan all three not Euros so your statement is just foolish.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 2, 2010 10:00 PM | Report abuse

Like Locker said, next PP is ours.

Posted by: sca187 | December 2, 2010 10:00 PM | Report abuse

Despite being down a goal, the Caps are playing outstanding hockey tonight for the most part.

You saw the risk/reward of Semin on the PK earlier. Got cute leading to a turnover but made some positive plays as well.

You also saw a classic example of Ovechkin lunging in the o-zone and taking himself out of position leading to the 2-on-1 the other way. He needs to read that better and backpedal or somehow make sure the guy doesn't get behind him so easily.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 2, 2010 10:00 PM | Report abuse

Any way we can deport Capt_Kirk accross the AZ border into Mexico. Seriously, the zenophobia is really sad.

Posted by: nfb987 | December 2, 2010 10:01 PM | Report abuse

Erskine and Neuvy are our two stars of the game so far...

This was a pretty good game before the refs chose a side.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 2, 2010 10:03 PM | Report abuse

@sca187

I think he shows his force by hitting. He is 5th in the NHL in hits and we know he can make some good ones. I think that is how he should try and do something that doesn't get on the scoreboard. I just think the fight brings up much more chance of a injury which is the last thing we want.

Maybe not the best but among the best 40 min efforts they've given this season.

They may start losing their legs in the 3rd and may not win but I like what I saw out of them tonight.

Personally I am ok with the play. He was going for the big hit which when his isn't scoring is a very big part of his game. Yes he missed but what he didn't do is after getting beat he didn't stick his knee out and get another penality and risk an injury and possible suspension. In that one play it was bad but in the long run is was a play I like seeing him make because more often then not he lands that hit and changes momentum.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 2, 2010 10:08 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Ovi should have taken the empty netter last night. He would be pressing so hard to score during this game.

Posted by: instinct227 | December 2, 2010 10:10 PM | Report abuse

Hendricks is a beast in the o zone. Seems like a lot of hitting going on. Anyone know the count?

Posted by: 4thand1 | December 2, 2010 10:11 PM | Report abuse

@icehammer97

you should've heard their gm's take on stewart's fight.....he's got a much different take than you'd think

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 2, 2010 10:11 PM | Report abuse

@ icehammer

You are absolutely correct. I agree with the hitting part. But I just think that if someone were to engage OV that I want to see him take care of his own business. It's a big risk, but if the outcome is good, it will send even more of a message to the league. Much of this sport is psychological, and the fact that the tussle would make Sportscenter would send a message real quick. Plus I think he would just whip somebody's a*s...

Just once... Please?

Did he even make it on the road trip? He's been non existant so far, shut down by 2 mediocre West teams. What a blowhard.

Posted by: sca187 | December 2, 2010 10:51 PM | Report abuse

they just need one offense zone draw with about 7 seconds left - steckel wins it clean - then OT

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | December 2, 2010 10:52 PM | Report abuse

I don't know. Caps seemed to be playing pretty strong until the Stars' second goal.

Posted by: 4thand1 | December 2, 2010 10:52 PM | Report abuse

This being the first game I have really watched Hannan I have not seen any of the foot speed issues others were talking about him so that is a plus. We also have been playing much better then the score shows and with us playing last night and having to change citys that is a good sign. A win would be great but this game has had lots of positives just not beingg able to put the puck in the net. A lot of that looks like the ice because Dallas has had the same issue.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 2, 2010 10:52 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 2, 2010 10:53 PM | Report abuse

I don't like having Ovie on the D 5 on 5. We have Carlson to go with Green if we want 2 offensive Dmen late in the game.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 2, 2010 10:56 PM | Report abuse

OVI is sandbagging to make SEMIN look great so The Caps sign Semin to a long range contract. I know crazy theory. After Semin signs oVI will score a goal every game from that point on

Posted by: pkme | December 2, 2010 10:57 PM | Report abuse

Tired? 2nd on the road and tired is the excuse? Did they party it up in St. Lou last night?

Great excuse, especially for a weak ass Eastern team. But the Caps aren't a weak ass team.. at least they shouldn't be.

If the NHL wants to show it isn't a joke they have got to make that play reviewable. It cost us at least a point and it has cost Detroit on several occasions as well. The refs need to get a point in the standings tonight because they sure stole one.

Caps need offensive help up the middle. As for tonight, sure, they put a bunch of shots on goal, but not all of them were quality scoring chances. The best attempts the Caps had often went high or wide. And at some point, OV is going to have to start putting pucks into the net consistently. I know other teams key on him, but he has to find ways to score anyway. It's time for him to start crashing the net or hanging around the crease.

"It's not like this game hurt our season."

Right, but when it happens 5-10 times per season and in the playoffs... where a goal is called back because a bad call, it DOES hurt our season.

There's a reason why NHL will never match the ratings of the NFL and MLB... because the league is so inconsistent and the games are no longer enjoyable to watch.

What angers me the most about this is the fact the because the NHL for some reason doesn't want to offend a ref by saying he might have been wrong they won't let that call be reviewed. I have yelled at the TV every time it happens to Detroit and the league still does nothing about it. It is an easy fix, you review it to get it right. It is the same with the stupid intent to blow the whiste rule that cost Detroit two years ago against the Ducks in the playoffs. Another case of the league not wanting the refs to feel like they could be wrong so they can't review the call. But no matter how many games needless rules like this change the NHL will do nothing about it because they would rather protect the refs then make the game better. And the NHL wonders why so many consider hockey a second teir sport.

@Florida

The real anger and hate should be directed to the Caps who didn't play a full 60 mins and made a backup look like Tim Thomas. And to OV who hasn't scored since club Nyet in Russia during the summer.

Refs make bad calls all the time to all teams, they even out over the season. And this disallowed goal wasn't a bad call, however the penalties and non-calls were in Dallas favor tonight.

haha telling us to stop whining when you got the biggest whiner of all on your team. you're funny.

Posted by: rachel216 | December 2, 2010 11:31 PM | Report abuse

Sid, that's not interference "by the book". Rule 69.1 of the NHL rulebook:

"This rule is based on the premise that an attacking player’s position, whether inside or outside the crease, should not, by itself, determine whether a goal should be allowed or disallowed. In other words, goals scored while attacking players are standing in the crease may, in appropriate circumstances be allowed."

Just because Ovie was in the paint does not make it goaltender interference. Raycroft couldn't make the save because his own player pushed between him and Ovechkin. Ovechkin didn't prevent Raycroft from making the save; the Dallas player prevented Raycroft from making the save.

69.1 goes on to state "For purposes of this rule, “contact,” whether incidental or otherwise, shall mean any contact that is made between or among a goalkeeper and attacking player(s), whether by means of a stick or any part of the body."

Note that the contact must be between the goalie and the attacking player(s). Where did Ovechkin and Raycroft make contact?

"There's a reason why NHL will never match the ratings of the NFL and MLB... because the league is so inconsistent and the games are no longer enjoyable to watch."

Inconsistency is also happening in those sports. The only difference is that the NFL has the money to bail out their star players from jail to keep money in the seats. The NHL rarely has to worry about big star players getting arrested for rape/murder/shooting themselves/dog fighting. Same goes for the NBA. If the Red Sox and Yankees didn't exist, baseball would be one of the worst rated sports. Hockey wins in both its class and talent regarding players. I would LOVE to have an NFL and NBA lockout so everyone will be forced to watch hockey during the winter!

Another night Schultz leads the Caps in hits with 4.

Hannan seemed solid. Sloppy ice. For all Ovi's misses, Richards had him beat with about 4 open net back doors.

This was not a bad road effort. I can't say I got a good look at all those penalties, but cheez, that first Dallas goal was almost inevitable after that string of PPs. Our PK work was again impressive overall.

Posted by: Justafan | December 2, 2010 11:41 PM | Report abuse

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
Haha it's funny how these games work out the last two nights. Overall St. Louis was the better team last night and the Caps win.

Tonight - role reversal. The Caps were clearly the better team tonight. It's unfortunate the refs did become a factor. Schultz gets a boarding call yet right before - right in front of the refs face - he gets his stick slashed out of his hands. Haha. Penalty killers did a great job all around. Hannan's call was also a farce. What can you do? The refs didn't make it up enough in the 3rd period.

The disallowed goal at the end is a rule that should be changed on incidental contact. They must be reviewable as Ovie was in the crease but the defender for Dallas slid into the crease into his goalie pushing him into the net. That needs to be reviewed.

NEUVIRTH: Kid's been rock solid but you MUST NEVER give up a softie like that right after your team tied it up. It's ashame most will remember that outside of the solid overall effort you gave.

ERIC FEHR: He's another forward I would love to see them trade. Looks big but is a feather on the puck. You can knock him off the puck. He's a big galoot and I'm finished with him. Knock me all you want but there is another forward we can put in his place that will produce.

@BigGameSid - with all due respect you obviously didn't watch the game. Telling us the Caps need to play 60 - They outshot the Stars 38-21 and controlled play for most of the game. And at the end Ovie wasn't the one sliding into the goalie knocking him back in the net. Look at the overhead camera replay again. Plus you talk about making a backup look like Tim Thomas. Shows how little you know about hockey. Raycroft has been in the league for a while and he played solid. Caps didn't make him look anything. The kid stood tall and had a solid game. Try giving credit rather than only making yourself look like a fool. LOL Although thanks for the laugh haha.

CAPS FANS: This game is a distant memory already come Saturday night. The Stars can thank the their goalie with an assist from the refs tonight. Better to have a game like this happen now then in the playoffs. Move on. It's back home for the first of fourth. Time to knock the Thrashers back again.

IT'S BEEN ONE HELL OF A NIGHT LOL

i thought Shultz gave another uninspiring performance. I know Erskine isn't the swiftest of skaters, but he sure hustles. Shultz certainly doesn't play like he's concerned about ice time; Green sure is his meal ticket. How can it not bother guys on the team to see Majo get smoked, Ovi start a scrum, and Shultz standing around like a school kid waiting for a teacher to break it up??? Twas good, though, to see Fehr not hesitate to support his captain (thought the possibility of a 3rd man in was there the way he flew in, jumping....nice job, Fehr)

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 2, 2010 11:46 PM | Report abuse

That was not close to being close. The official that made that call should be disciplined.

Anyone that's been paying attention knows I'm just as likely to stick up for the refs when they make an anti-Capitals call as I am to criticize them.

That call was wrong, and it made me sad. Another pointed out, above, that we shouldn't fault the ref, that it happened so fast, etc.

That's 100% wrong. This is a call you absolutely cannot make unless you absolutely see an actual instance of interference. It's easy to see that no one actually saw an actual instance of interference because it didn't even come close to occurring. So we know the referee actually gave Dallas the win based on something he never saw.

There is no excuse for this. If the ref just misses something--that's another animal entirely. Everyone can understand missing something. Making up stuff that didn't happen and awarding a team an undeserved victory is as awful as officiating can ever be.

This season has been made a substantially worse one because of this horrible call. It's obvious to me that the referee should be disciplined, and I believe he will. We will never know about it, but I believe it will actually happen.

P.S.: OVECHKIN - Put him back on the right wing. I'd love to see more of that right now and see what it does for his game. Makes him more versatile. AND A BIG KUDOS FOR OVIE going after that jackass who tried to take Majo's head off at the end of the period. Ovie would've put him 6 feet under that ice. Love the leadership and fire showed by the captain. AWESOME. So many little things you're starting to see now with this team that was missing.

Don't sweat BigGameSid. Have you actually seen Pittsburgh? I just spent a few days there for work and it's literally the most depressing town in the States. I really have no clue how they lure players to live there.

Posted by: jakopz | December 2, 2010 11:53 PM | Report abuse

Fehr needs to be traded where he can make more of a contribution. Mcphee has done a pretty good job on the draft. Fehr has not lived up to the money he makes and has been one of the weaker players in the 2003 draft. At times he shines. Make no mistake that Fehr does not have Flash's skill and we will not be able to get much for him. We would be lucky to get a 2nd round pick. We would have to package him with a draft pick and a prospect to get something wothwhile. He is probably the weakest link on the whole roster.

Posted by: pkme | December 2, 2010 11:57 PM | Report abuse

I'm all for pacing yourself during the season for the playoffs but 8 or 9 games without a goal for Ovi is somewhat troublesome to say the least.

As it was pointed out a few times during the broadcast, it's not like he's just trying to set people up. The opportunities are there for him to score but he's either missing the net or swinging and missing the puck altogether.

It's like when a baseball slugger gets in a home-run drought, the last thing he should be doing is swinging for the fenses. He should just be looking to hit it right up the middle.

@PKME - FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE THAT SEES IT. Fehr needs to go. And someone else posted earlier about Schultz and Green being his meal ticket. Agreed wholeheartedly. Posted by: Jonathan6 | December 3, 2010 12:01 AM | Report abuse

You cannot stand in the paint and expect not to be called even if you don't touch the goalie. It's still interference if you interfere with the goalie's ability to make the save. There's a reason why the rule was in place and they make the call, so players don't stand in the heart of the blue when the goalie is just outside the crease.

Posted by: BigGameSid | December 3, 2010 12:03 AM | Report abuse

@pkme

agree w/ya on Fehr....i was impressed, though, how he showed no hesitation backing up Ovi.....first time in his Caps career he wasn't being pushed around w/a stupid smirk on his face; maybe it's a sign he's trying to contribute in other ways because he sure isn't offensively

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 3, 2010 12:04 AM | Report abuse

I still think something may be ailing OVI. His shot is off and he looks at time much slower. I also have not seen more double teaming on him than this year. He has no room. Does anyone think OVI could play center? You would think he has the ability to play every position on the ice.

Posted by: pkme | December 3, 2010 12:07 AM | Report abuse

@BigGameSid - Hey genius - again go watch a replay and look at the overhead camera angle. Crease or not - Ovie did not interfere with the goalie's ability to make the save. Raycroft's defenseman slid into the crease and the net - not allowing Raycroft to be in position to make the save. If you're going to interpret the rule that way then see it correctly based on the replay. It's one thing if Ovie prevented the goalie but it was his own defenseman.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | December 3, 2010 12:08 AM | Report abuse

Schultz is a really useful defenseman. The Caps need him. He is so sound positional, very rarely makes stupid plays and almost never makes bad judgements. Sure he is not flashy, hard hitting but he does so many things really well. I would rate him in the top 20-25 defensemen in the NHL with or without Green. They compliment each other. I think Schultz is a keeper.

Posted by: pkme | December 3, 2010 12:14 AM | Report abuse

Yep, Jonathan, you're correct. Even the Dallas announcers said it was a bad call on Ovi and the goal should have counted. And for those wondering, right now, the Caps PP/PK differential is -22. Pens is +6. Expect for the Pens to have a ton of PP chances during the WC.

Posted by: dfe1 | December 3, 2010 12:19 AM | Report abuse

@pkme

i'm not looking to engage, but top 20-25 in the nhl?? I thought his play on the 1st pp goal was lackadaisical at best, and his reaction while Ovi scrumming it up w/Ott on his back was INEXCUSABLE. That's what I mean by heart, and I can't imagine it doesn't rub some teammates the same way. No, if not for BB on any other team he'd be a 4-6 at best (I don't think he'd crack Boston's, or Philly's, backline)

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 3, 2010 12:24 AM | Report abuse

Other than Fehr I like the make up of this years Capitals better than last year. We need an upgrade at Center. Trade Fehr so they keep the roster the way it is. I just do not know what center you bring in. Someone maybe a notch below a Mike Richards would make this team absolutely complete (Who plays a similiar style to Richards). The Caps also have three of the top ten scorers in the league and they will get better as the season progresses. Defense is 100 percent better. The secondary lines and grinders are playing incredible hockey. I have said after Montreal that BB should be replaced. I think he is learning to adjust game plans and is getting to be an even better coach. Of course the playoffs will be the real test for him. If this team does not at least get to the conference finals BB will be gone.

Posted by: pkme | December 3, 2010 12:25 AM | Report abuse

I think the Caps played a pretty good overall road game, especially for the 2nd of back-to-back. They controlled the play at even strength and were very good on the PK overall. But the string of PPs in the 2nd wore the PK out and Neuvy let in a bad goal in the 3rd(it happens to every goalie). Unfortunately the Caps just missed on a bunch of scoring opportunities and the refs finished it off with an atrocious call.

@vermontcaps

I actually thought all of the Caps defensemen played solidly tonight. No egregious mistakes, very good positioning, good breakouts and a good job of keeping the puck in at the point.

IMO, Schulz played a very good game. He deflected many passes down low that would have found open guys. He takes away such a big portion of the ice when he plays like that. He also had 4 hits. Overall I thought Schulz was very good.

Ovie started going to the net in the last 10 minutes and just missed on a tip attempt(I think off of a Green shot). Ovie tipped it just wide. You can tell he is gripping his stick a little tighter and he is frustrated. It happens.

In the end it may be a good thing because it has him working on other areas of his game(passing, making more simple plays, going to the net, etc.). The fact that he is becoming much more of a threat to pass the puck will eventually create more room for him to score.

I'm not worried about Ovie. He is still playing decently and will start scoring. The Caps as a team have played well over the past 5 games also. It may be good for them to realize that they can still be very successful even when Ovie is off and not scoring.

first off, peace :) lol I know you see the good in Shultz, and I admitedly look for the bad, but I want more from Jeff "The Sargent of Nice" Shultz...he doesn't have to beat guys up, but he needs to be more confrontational and use his size; I don't know about his strength because he doesn't seem to knock guys off the puck nor take it from them much...I think he's too comfortable in his role, knowing BB's affinity for him, and if BB could cut that umbilical cord and sit him a few nights I think he might get it (until then, I don't think he will)...I know we've gone around alot about "heart", and I think Shultz showed his lack of it by not supporting his CAPTAIN, THE GREATEST PLAYER ON EARTH.

If Pittsburgh was so great why doesn't the NBA even consider a franchise there? Because there is no money in that town. It's cheap to live there because it is a rusting town -literally.

Baseball execs talk about the team being eventually moved because the town can't afford to keep the team long term. Even when the Bucs were good, the town did not bust the gates down to get in. There is no disposable income in that town. The NBA knows that.

It is an endless cycle of poor seasons followed by poor attendance. That loss streak is gonna' get into the 20 plus year range, no doubt. There is no money to break the cycle. Who would buy that team in a decaying town with no money ?

Biggamesyd came down here for a decent job. He feels guilty about leaving. Simple as that !!

Are you a Caps fan, or just an Erskine sycophant (you know, like pictures on the walls next to your orchid and moth collections - j/k)? I ask because you seem to be so eager to bad-mouth everyone from BB to 55 to whomever to make your points about how 4 should be a first-line blueliner. Sorry, he's a nice player and a nicer guy... but he just isn't even close to the complimentary player in the Caps system that 55 is.

You wanna put 4 out there with 52 and see what happens when Green takes it up ice to start a rush or jumps into the offensive zone? Really? Ragging on 55 is nuts, my man. Mixing it up isn't his game; he can't be wasting energy getting into the fray when he's logging twice as many minutes as 4... and playing twice as good stay-at-home D as any other blueliner on this team. For the folks who say he's riding Green's coattails, that's hogwash. While it no doubt inflated his +/- with Green (and the front liners) scoring so much, his D kept the "-" to a minimum.

LMAO. Please don't feed the trolls.

as for Shultz's "4" hits tonight, I can't seem to remember one (how does one distinguish a hit when all he does is press guys against the boards?). No doubt the scorers were feeling generous...i think it was Locker who expressed a little surprise when he said there was 30 hits registered like just over halfway through the 1st

@dfe

Interesting that you've calculated the PP/PK differential between the Caps and the opponents. It's certainly stark.

Are our boys just truly that undisciplined or are the opponents just slicker and can get away with more? Or is it reputation?

@Chaspari1

I've been a fan of Erskine since he broke into the NHL, and I was totally stoked when we signed him; he had two solid years (playing not much worse than now), but last year BB went cold on him. Now he's clearly having one of the best season's on the backline of any dman (top-3 in team in hits, blocked shots, fights, goals, points) and BB comes out today and says, if and when everyone is healthy it'll be Erskine sitting. I've seen this movie before and we need his presence to be an integral part of the team (not just someone we throw in against tough teams so he can protect everyone).....alan may said it best tonight, that it's good to have guys competing for ice time (in reference to varly/neuvy).....so why is BB already guaranteeing that Erskine will be the odd man out? Why should Shultz or Alzner try to amp up their game? As a fan of Erskine, I think he's been greatly unappreciated...as a fan of the Caps, I think the style he brings every night is needed on an otherwise meek and passive blueline even w/Hannan

and no, I don't think Erskine should be paired w/Green....he should be where he is, on the 3rd set....pair Poti/Erskine, then play Hannan in either Shultz or Alzner's spot

No fighting. We all have different views and opinions. We are all Caps Fan other than that pain in the neck Biggame. The Caps defense this year has been great.

erskine has looked great this season. I thought BB should have played him against MTL. Of course they were concerned about the speed of the midgets. Although we all know now that the Caps offense lost the series.

VTCaps -

Actually, I think his style often hurts the Caps because he takes so many penalties. And, not all of them - by any means - are his standing up for a teammate like you'd like to see 55 have done. No, most of his PIM are a direct result of his lack of defensive skills; he takes penalties because he can't stop people within the rules of the game. Let's look at last year. 4 played 50 games and had 66 PIM. 55 had 32 in 70 (with twice the ice time per game). Poti had 42 in 70 games.

The Caps greatly improved the team when they got rid of Brashear. They substituted skill for brute strength, neither of which Erskine has in abundance... at least not enough to warrant the type of advocacy I see here, IMHO.

"Meek and passive" works just fine if you have the skills to break up plays without taking penalties that cost the team GA. 4 doesn't have the defensive skills that 55, 27 or 4 do. He certainly doesn't have the offensive skills that Green or Carlson have, nor the ability to be the stay-at-home compliment to their forays into the O zone. I haven't really seen much of Hannan, but you seem to think he can be a tough guy... but he has racked up PIM at half the pace 4 does. So, he is what he is: a nice role player who hustles and is a good team guy. But BB doesn't have the best record in the NHL since taking over for nothing... he is an excellent evaluator of talent and how specific players best fit into the system.

Schultz and Alzner are the best instincitive D-men we have. There's a reason they are paired with Green and Carlson. Poti/Hannan is a far better pairing than Poti/Erskine, just based on the basic skill set Hannan brings. Same or better pure D, but with less PIM liability.

@ Hockey is a hard sell in the South. I should know, I'm from MS. My fam and friends think I'm crazy for liking and watching hockey. No one wants to go with me to see the MS Surge (used to be MS Sea Wolves before Hurricane Katrina).

We have a few CAPS fans down here on the Mississippi Gulfcoast. Gulfport here, only been to a few Sea Wolves games, havent been to the Surge games yet.

Coach B is well known down here , from his time when he guides the Wolves to the Kelly Cup Title.
