Development Camp Begins

I'm out here at Kettler Capitals Iceplex taking in the opening morning of development camp. Not much to report yet. There are about a dozen fans in the stands and Hanlon and Boudreau are at the markerboard diagramming systems.

It's hard to tell which players look good because they're doing drills at the moment. I can, however, confirm this much: Varlamov is very quick. Unfortunately, I missed Backstrom's group because of a traffic backup.

This afternoon's scrimmage, from 4:30-6, should be pretty revealing in terms where individuals are in their development. So I'm looking forward to that. After the scrimmage is also the only time reporters can do interviews.

I'll do my best to update with news and interesting tidbits this week, but the boken-up schedule and limited access is going to make it difficult.

Don't forget all of the on-ice sessions are open and free to the public. So there's no excuse not to come out and get your July hockey fix.

Thanks, Tarik. Can't wait to hear about the first fisticuffs and fray-cuss (in Locker's words) between the prospects. You know it's bound to happen.

Via Metro from RedLine Bethesda, how do you get to Kettler?

I don't know how far Bethesda is from Metro Center, but MC to Ballston is around 20/25 minutes TOPS.

1) Get out of the Ballston metro station turn right at the top of the escalator
2) at the street turn left (Can't remember the name of the street).
3) The mall is right infront of you about 2 blocks.
4) Once in the mall, go to the parking garage and take it to the top floor that's the iceplex.

I should hopefully make it for the 4:30 scrimmage... depends on how fast I can duck out of work.

Some of the teams are announcing their pre-season schedules. The Caps have two pre-season contests against the Canes.

Sept. 16 in Carolina and Sept. 25 at Verizon.

Add Sept 22 in Tampa to that list.

Can't wait to hear about how everybody looks!

Btw, the Caps' official site is reporting that Varlamov has been signed to an entry-level 3-year deal. Tarik is right, the guy is quick!

Vogel over on dumpnchase.wordpress.com announced that the Caps have signed Simeon Varlamov.

Check out the TSN article about Yashin.
He's not liking any of the offers so far and he might go back to Russia.

HollyOlie,

What will you be wearing today so that I can sit next to you?

Posted by: Stalker | July 11, 2007 1:05 PM | Report abuse

A traffic backup in this area? Surely, you jest!

Posted by: :-/ | July 11, 2007 1:45 PM | Report abuse

Just make sure Backstrom does'nt wear #19.

The 20 year old age limit in the AHL applies only to players from Canadian juniors, so it doesn't affect Varlamov. It isn't an AHL rule; it's an agreement between the NHL and Canadian junior leagues. The actual age limit in the AHL is 18.

HolyOlie,

Nice yellow suit you're wearing! Just wondering though, who's the skinny chick on the right? You should tell her to get back to her modeling career. She doesn't belong with the rest of you real women! :)

Tarik (or anyone else here) -- did you attend the camp sessions today? Any insight you'd care to share about the players? Any standouts (or duds)?

ADDITION TO MY POST ABOVE:

Sorry Tarik, I missed part of your post about the camp sessions (DUH!). I'll wait for your report on the PM session.

Posted by: Puckdawg69 | July 11, 2007 4:07 PM | Report abuse

obviously this is only a brief snapshot of the first day (morning session) of development camp. fun to watch though. u can also find brent johnson (nobody cares), halpy and potthier on the other rink practicing together in the mornings. and excuse my weak attempt to put some info out there but this is what i have...of course it would take a lot longer to evaluate these kids. maybe somebody else can fill in the blanks that i have or update it after the scrimmages.
No Name Notes
19 Niklas Backstrom Can finish, pass, possess the puck - by far the best player
29 Jamie Hunt didn't get to see too much. Solid d
30 Michal Neuvirth great glove, confident and looked to be the best goalie out there
31 Daren Machesney all the goalies made stops so im not gonna comment cause it only matters in the playoffs
34 Sasha Pokulok heavy shot, confident, bit of a doof
36 Francois Bouchard nothing popped out initially, but he really was solid as time went on. Im excited. Looked great playing with backstrom
40 Simeon Varlamov played at the same time as neuvirth. A bit wider and looked pretty solid
41 Theo Ruth seemed a bit timid. Never saw his shot. On the small end.
42 Sami Lepisto actually liked him a lot. Solid d. a bit on the small side but liked his play
45 Steve Werner cut
46 Patrick McNeill shot didn't stand out. Passes were ok. Decent defensively. I don't know about our qb on powerplays.
47 Karl Alzner I don't think hell be ready for the nhl this year. Kinda boring. Shot isnt that hard compared to a lot of those guys out there. Solid d though. I think hell be a good stay at home one day.
48 Oskar Osala huge. Hammer for a shot. Charges the net, this guy can play now. Unfortunately he's a lw
49 Viktor Dovgan cut
54 Oscar Hedman mediocre
57 Kyle Wilson good shot and skates well. I think hell have a shot soon
58 Maxime Lacroix didn't notice him.
59 Joe Finley backstrom burnt him a couple of times. Doesn't look that good. Tall, goofy...has a ways to go.
61 Andrew Joudrey nothing special
62 Sean Collins barely noticed him.
63 Andrew Gordon decent. Works his ass off.
65 Andrew Glass on the smaller side but showed some fiesty potential
67 Justin Taylor ok
70 Justin Mrazek goalie, cut
71 Travis Morin this guy was playing with backstrom and bouchard a bit but he was a pleasant surprise. I liked his game. Nice passes. Great backhand saucers.
72 Pasi Salonen didn't notice
73 Josh Godrey ok, didn't see that 90+ rocket of his
75 Phil DeSimone in my top five favorite players out there. Great hands, can skate well, fast and just exciting. I would love to see this guy make it. Not huge though.
76 Brett Bruneteau he also played with backstrom, morin and bouchard at times but had some great looks, made some plays. I liked his game.
78 Brett Leffler not much to say
80 Dan Dunn boring
85 Mathieu Perreault skinny kid, need to see more of his game to comment
86 Luke Lynes cut
?? Kronick not on the roster. This guy was a retard. I have know idea why he was out there

You might want to fix your typo. (4th paragraph, "boken-up")
