George McPhee on Dmitri Orlov: 'We're pretty high on this player'

By Katie Carrera

Dmitri Orlov played his first two games with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears over the past weekend after practicing for a few days with the Capitals while Visa problems prohibited him from traveling to Canada with the Bears.

The young defenseman continues to impress with each step. After finishing a busy day Monday with the NHL's trade deadline, General Manager George McPhee discussed Orlov's progress.

"He can't play in the NHL this year, based on the rules that we have in the league. But we expect that he'll play a lot for [Hershey] the rest of this season and the playoffs. And we'll see how that goes," McPhee said. "But we got a report from someone that was at the game who said Orlov's first period the other night was the best first period he's ever seen from a 19-year-old in the American Hockey League. So that was pretty encouraging.

"We're pretty high on this player," McPhee continued. "He's a mobile, puck-moving defenseman, really good on the power play and has a big shot. And he's got an edge to him. He can hit, play tough and he really wants to be here. He's made the commitment to be here and he's been telling us for a year that he's coming and he's here. So good for him."

For more on Orlov's debut with the Bears, head to RMNB for an interview and video of the Capitals' prospect, then check out another translated interview over at Japers' Rink.

Wow! GMGM is making his rounds and here's what he said:

1. Poti was down and when Green went down I really felt like I needed to help this team esp on the PP and Wideman does that. On PK too. We've improved in a lot of areas but our PP needs help.
2. Arnott & Steckel are different players. We felt like we could move Steckel with Gordo there and Beags comin up.
3. Felt we needed Arnott's experience and intangibles. He's been a Captain, he's won a Cup, we need that here. We wanted the player and all the intangibles he brings.
4. When asked if he tried to add Penner: No he wasn't on our radar. I didn't want term at the forward position b/c we have players coming up next yr I need to make room for. On "D" it was ok b/c they're so hard to get. We like Wideman with another yr.

I forgot to mention that this interview was on NHL Network.

I also just heard an actual recording of the "trade call". Don Fishman (asst GM) was on the call for the Caps, not GMGM which is common as well. Pretty standard call, only condition was players pass physicals today by noon EST which happens in every trade.

Geez Katie another crazy article title that is going to confuse everyone about the true point of the article. Perhaps you should have gone with:

"Charlie Sheen is to cocain/hookers like McPhee is to Orlov, but McPhee can pass a drug test"

See, isnt that much clearer and to the point? Plus it helps the younger crowd on here practice for the analogy section of the SATs. =)

Have you ever re-read any of your posts?
Every time I read your posts, this picture pops into my head:

First, thanks ssweeney, you just made my day. I didn't think anyone read my posts, but seeing that you do and you actually conjure up images, I'll count you as my #1 fan.

Second, I rarely re-read anything I've typed so no, I don't look to connect any dots.

Third, I'm sorry I can't comment about your posts because I've never seen one here before. I'd be happy to talk hockey anytime you want, ssweeney, and you can pick the topics of discussion. I'll be around, just hit me up at your convenience.

Looking forward to hearing back from ya, but I won't be holding my breath....

Holy wow where is my brain today? The trade call was with Florida for Wideman. The call took place at 11:25am and said they would make an annoucement at 11:45am to allow some time for them to contact players etc.

GMGM has done a great job...I don't care what anyone says. Future is very bright, especially in this salary cap era - need those young guys.

All of the NHL commentaries I've listened to give kudos to the trades and pick-up that the Capitals made. Granted I haven't heard all the "experts" weigh in but those I have heard are positive about the moves. Time will tell.

Wow. Kinda surprised there. Penner has one more year on his contract. Do we really have "players coming up?"

We have Bradley, Knuble, BGordon, Arnott and Sturm as UFAs and Perreault going away. Beagle, AGordon and outside shot Kuzzie and Eakin. We couldn't have squeezed in Penner?

Arnott, if he works out, could be brought back one more year as #2C. "IF" he works out. Like they did with Feds.

Oops. Earlier I said no comments about next year until after Playoffs...BUT, I have not criticized McPhee.

It's all good...I think you are in the "grey" area still, or toeing the line if you will. It's almost as if you are on a fence between the 2 sides...hmmmmm.

SAOTI: Come to think of it, the title of this article would have been rejected by Ed Sullivan if Jim Morrison had tried to sing it as part of the Doors' lyrics.

"C'mon, baby, light my schmorelov,
I couldn't be no higher, on Orlov."

@Pokerface

While Penner wasnt inquired about, even if he was GMGM would say he wasn't. Only exception would be if he didnt make any moves and he'd name a player to show that the price was too high.

Posted by: ThePat | March 1, 2011 3:20 PM | Report abuse

@tomin

If you restrict the 12 forwards to playing their positions then there's only 220 possible line combinations. BB should be able to get through those in no time, :-).

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | March 1, 2011 3:21 PM | Report abuse

Is Orlov left shot or right shot and does he play right side or left side?

We really could use an offensive minded D on the left side.

Actually from the description it's exactly the same as Poile talking about Gonchar when he took him 14th overall in 1992. Gonch a left-shooter who mostly I recall on right side.

Well I'm not ssweeney but I will take ya up on this. What would you like to see out of the new guys in tonights game?

Posted by: hart2014 | March 1, 2011 3:22 PM | Report abuse

@tominsocal1

GMGM didn't want to get Penner because of the combination of what it would have taken to get him (1st this year, likely Eakin and a 2nd or 3rd next year), and that he is a winger.

The Caps already have a decent group of wingers and it wasn't worth devoting a lot of trade assets for another winger(Sturm was acquired for free) when center was the primary need.

In addition, the Caps already have a lot of money tied up in wingers for next year, having another large salaried winger wasn't something GMGM wanted.

He would prefer to allocate those funds to either D or center, not wing. Anyone can feel free to disagree, but I agree with that thinking.

But I'm lacking one thing...the truest of the true KA drinkers also have the little plastic mug with the smiley face. Plus the plastic pitcher. Remember how if your mom would mail in like 10 empty KA packs they would send you the picther and mugs set?

FLCF: Has to be more than 220 combos because he had Backie at wing and center recently. And Vogel tweet had Sturm at RW even though he's a LW. But 220 is enough to get Bruce through this week. Maybe.

"Didn't want a forward with term."

Suppose he coulda got Stamkos for the #1 pick?

"He11 no! He's got term!"

I mean, we got players coming up, but we don't have a Penner.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | March 1, 2011 3:41 PM | Report abuse

@Tom - I was wondering if anybody would pick up on that. I'm in the same boat you are. Who is coming up?

Here's me putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with a hypothesis. I think he's talking about Kuzzy and Eakin. Only b/c when he made the comment it was around the topic of "moving Steckel" in conjunction with "not taking on term for the forwards". What do they call that? A "Segway"! LOL.

I've heard in my circles that Kuzzy wanted to stay 1 more yr in Russia and will be here next yr. Needless to say Eakin & Kuzzy will both be in camp so you would think one of them would make the club.

On D, he was very OK with bringing in somebody with term left because he said, "they are so hard to find".

Tom, GMGM tried to send you these items and he wanted it delivered by hand. He sent a couple Caps players to burst through your wall ala Kool-Aid Man style, but the following happened (according to my sources):

1) Poti - tore he groin running on the approach to your wall.
2) Shultz - stopped a few feet short of your wall because he didnt want to trample the rose garden in front of it.
3) Matty Perrault - hit the wall, but bounced off...the wall remained intact.
4) Green - got confused about where he was supposed go, and ended up across the street and way out of position.
5) Backstom - had a migraine as he was approaching the wall and decided it was best to go back and rest in the hotel.
6) Semin - concluded running into the wall wouldnt be his best chance to break through it, so he picked up a stick laying near your house and started to whack at it. A cop happened to pass by and arrested him.
7) Nylander - couldnt quite make it to your wall, but left you a nice "crop circle" in your lawn from the path he took.
8) Boyd Gordon - apparently shattered like a bottle upon contacting your wall.
9) Chimmera - Uh...he is the one that put that hole in your shed that is wide left of your house.

And Finally the last reason you did not receive your plastic KA drinking set...

10) Ovie - swatted at your shutter to close it first, whiffed, then fell over, and passed out drunk from vodka.
