Erskine Out Tonight

Defenseman John Erskine will miss tonight's game in Phoenix with a bruised calf. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Sergei Fedorov, who will move from first line center to the blue line. Fedorov will be paired with Milan Jurcina.

Erskine's absence leaves Donald Brashear and Matt Bradley to handle any of the rough stuff tonight. And there probably will be some that considering who's in the lineup for the Coyotes (Brian McGrattan and Daniel Carcillo).

That is sooo stupid! Why would you sign Erskine for that much money. He's not that good at all. He's slow and takes stupid penalties....

Posted by: hockeygrl76 | October 23, 2008 8:46 PM | Report abuse

wow what's with the having to sign in. anyways i'm mad someone took my name goOVcaps. anyways i hope we step it up tonight. phoenix should be an easy team to beat normally and with our play lately we should crush them to show we're not compeletly lost. i think anything less then a 2or3 goal win is almost as unacceptable as a loss

Posted by: capsfan387 | October 23, 2008 8:47 PM | Report abuse

on another note, i'm so mad we signed erskine for that much. i thought GMGM was being smarter lately and signing a low rated, non scoring, rarely efficent D for that much when we are already fighting a salary cap....is dumb

Tarik, can you give us the full lineup before the game? Will Backis be back with Ovie or?

Posted by: gavlegirl | October 23, 2008 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Straining under the weight of that new contract, no doubt...

I'm a Erskine fan due to his grit ... but I'm surprised at the two-year extension.

As for the contact amount, as long as the money doesn't come out of my pocket, it doesn't bother me. Congrats to Big John for the raise. Now play solid defense, don't shoot the puck over the glass ... and keep hitting people!

OK, get healed first.

Posted by: Boo- | October 23, 2008 9:20 PM | Report abuse

Being serious for a minute, I don't get this amount at all. There is a very good chance that the salary cap will go DOWN. He's not that great of a player.

There are 3 other D-men to sign; Schultz, Morrisonn, and Jurcina. What do you now pay them? Mo is now at 1.97M. You've got to be looking in the mid 2M range at least. Schultz is 750K range, Jurcina 880 range. They'll now pull in on the short side of 2M. These guys aren't worth that kind of money.

Erskine's been around for 6 years. He's suddenly going to improve now to be more valuable to the team than Bradley and the same value as Brashear? If his upside is that great, how do you value the upsides of Schultz, Jurcina, and Morrisonn?

I just don't get this at all.

Posted by: Greg S. | October 23, 2008 9:20 PM | Report abuse

They sign him to that kind of money, and the first game he has after he signs for 2009-10-11, he's out HURT. This... does not bode well at ALL.

Posted by: irockthered | October 23, 2008 9:24 PM | Report abuse

To ... I forget who's point in the last post: I do think they might drop him down to Hershey to shepherd some of the kids. That might be a good move... He's just not that good to be commanding that kind of a salary otherwise. Way too many "puck over glass" penalties, way too many "woops, I hit it too hard and it came all the way back down to the red line on the other side" attempts at clearing... Yeah, he can hit, but still. Jeesh!

Posted by: irockthered | October 23, 2008 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Am I the only one who is crying no tears for his being out?

And, look at it this way for those of you concerned about the rough stuff. You're not dealing with Milan Lucic, who checked Van Ryk (sp?) and shattered the glass all over the fans.

Posted by: kittypawz | October 23, 2008 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Let's assume for a second (because to assume for longer makes my head hurt) that he's actually worth that.

What do you NOW do with all the D-men in the pipeline in Hershey? What about Polulok, McNeill, Godfrey, Dovgan? How do they now squeeze into the picture?

This one has me stumped. I don't see the logic here.

I suggested Dame Boo earlier, but that may be too much of an inside joke kind of thing. I have a few others, but they're kinda schmultzy, and I wouldn't mention them.

Watching the Pens and Canes to kill time till the Caps game...Pitt leading 3-1 late in the third. GOOD because we don't want the Canes gaining ground in the division, BAD because I hate the Pens and their crappy announcers.

I wonder what all the JT bashers will have to talk about on Friday? I guees Erskine's contract will suffice. Good for him. He brings an element that the Caps team as presently constructed lacks as a whole-physical play. Yes, the term and length are a bit surprising but the Caps have proven to this point that they are mangaging the cap effetively and are agressive in retaining their own players. I'm all for that. Carlson will probably be ready to step in for Erskine in two years or so. Also, GMGM has said repeatedly you can never have enough NHL defenseman and they are tuff to trade for. I'm sure if the Hershey Dmen develop fast enough to warrant a roster spot on the big club, he will make room for them. Relax and enjoy the rest of the season I mean game.

Pathetic. The Coyotes are literally a TERRIBLE hockey team...playing their back up goalie...and they own the Caps. Disgraceful performance all around except for Theodore. He played his heart out and the rest of the team did nothing. Awful loss...unless this team wins good against Dallas, it's time to be worried. They look like the Hanlon Caps from last fall. I can't believe I stayed up to watch that crap game.

Posted by: badkarma723 | October 24, 2008 12:38 AM | Report abuse

This is inexcusable. Two west coast games against teams we should beat and all this firepower and two goals in two games is all this team can muster????? GIVE ME A BREAK. Unacceptable. I don't care if they fired 50 shots on a goal. ONE STINKING GOAL AGAINST THEIR BACKUP GOALTENDAR IN PHOENIX.

Just like the Orioles make a no-name look like a Cy-young winner the Caps still find ways to make back up goaltendars look like Vezina netminders. This team needs to wake up.

I know there is a lot of hockey left to be played but this is inexcusable. I didn't see any of the game and I'm sure the team played hard. But they better start finding ways to dent the back of the net MORE THAN ONE DAMN TIME AGAINST A BACK UP. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Is it time to drop the puck in Dallas yet? Haha. On to Big D.

Honestly, is nobody else disgusted at wasting their time and money on a team that plays this bad...a team that plays like the don't give a sh!t??? The offense was supposed to be HUGE this year...and they SUCK. 3 games in a row...ugh...I'm way too pissed, i'm going to bed before i get blocked for swearing. Way to raise expections and then play like garbage.

82 games in a season and we play 3 bad games. way to freak out everyone.

Could be worse. You could be a Flyers fan.

MNMNT

As I said, no time to panic but certainly something is wrong and need fixing.

When the best player by far is your goalie and you still lose, something is wrong.

When you lead three times in a row and then lose three times in a row, something is wrong.

Mostly is mentality, but some small things should be adjusted... like, enough Ovie on the PK, this is affecting the whole team.

OK, let's not panic. Only seven games.

I wish the Caps would save their stinker games for 7 p.m. face-offs, instead of keeping us up late and sending us to bed sleepy AND disappointed.

I'm going to the Caps game in Dallas Saturday. They're moving into CST, maybe they'll have a little more spunk.

We lost tonight because Erskine wasn't playing. *sarcasm*

However, I'm surprised the gloves weren't dropped tonight by someone ...

@MNMNT,

Chicago fired their coach ealier this week. Are you saying they paniced?

Look up the word "precarious" and you might understand what I meant.

How did you go from "Caps fan in TN" to "Cerealman" ? (or, as usual, I'm missing something?)

Posted by: mauree | October 24, 2008 1:08 AM | Report abuse

Too much skill to be scoring 1 goal in back to back games.

BB hands are tied, team manager has again managed to ruin the chemistry.

Posted by: Cheef | October 24, 2008 1:32 AM | Report abuse

There's an old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Obviously, Management has ignored that wisdom. The Caps made their rush WITHOUT "Mr. Slowdown" Nylander. They should trade him as quickly as possible. He doesn't fit. He's ruining the chemistry. Management needs to forget all of this, "We have 3 Offensive lines with Nylander in there" crap. Gabby has accused the players of playing, "Too cute." I think both he and gmgm are the ones guilty of trying to be too cute. They seem to have forgotten what enabled them to make that glorious run last spring. Basically, it was a combination of passion, grit, and great goaltending. At this point, none of those traits are evident. For some insane reason, they seem to have convinced themselves that they have no room for Blood & Guts players like Lang. How arrogant ( And foolish ) they've become. And, how quickly, I might add. They appear to be so preocupied with so - called "Skill" that they've forgotten the importance of grit and "Heart." Guys like Lang and Bourque ( Wow! Have they royally screwed him over, or what? )seem to have no place on the suddenly "High Octane" full speed ahead Capitals juggernot. AND, THAT'S THE PROBLEM. A little less Flash, dash, and pizzazzz, and a little more True grit, sacrifice and passion, and OV will suddenly start scoring again.
Clark seems to have completely forgotten what a Captain's responsibilities truly are. His job is to play with passion. Get involved ( Physically ) START a fight GOSH DARNIT! NOT JUST SKATE AROUND AIMLESSLY WITH THAT MORONIC LOOK ON HIS FACE. Matt Bradley has certainly behaved much, much more like a captain should, than Chris Clark.
The only real positive I could take from tonight's game ( Phoenix ) is that JT finally played as though he felt comfortable. He certainly play with more confidence. And, that's good.
Let's return to what works. Bring Land up. Trade Kozlov so that Bourque can get what he's earned. And, please, please take Sasha and OV off the PK. That's it. I'm out!

Jokinen wanted to kick Schultz's butt for falling down and drawing a penalty. That was funny and pathetic on Schultz's part. Teams target him because they know he's a wimp. It's not like he does anything else to make up for it either. He's not even a good skater.

Posted by: alanb1 | October 24, 2008 2:14 AM | Report abuse

@ alanb1,
I'm so glad you said that. You're absolutely correct. Truth is, the Caps have a roster FULL of wimps. I doubt many would disagree that Flash, Nylander, Fehr, Gordon, Morrison, and most definitely Kozlov fall into that catagory as well. I much prefer the philosophy of a different era, where players were more apt to stand up for themselves. Sure, there've always been tough guys. But this team "Enforcer" thing is a little far - fetched I think. Many times the "Enforcer" is sitting on the bench when an incident occurs. what's wrong with a man standing up for himself? Huh? I always thought that's what men do. Not wait for someone else to do his fighting for him. That's what B"s do. Huh?
And, I'm still waiting for the strapling 6ft. 4in. 245lbs. "Juice" to step up to the plate. BE A MAN!! Show you have a little testosterone. This lack of character is a great part of what ails the Caps. I think we'd all be shocked if Backstrom dropped the gloves. BUT, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT'S NEEDED. someone's got to show some balls out there.
Many seemed amazed when Sasha Semin stood up for himself in last spring's playoffs. I still haven't figured out why. From the day he first put on a Caps sweater, he conducted himself as a man. HE NEVER ONCE BACKED DOWN!! NOT ONCE!! But, watch a guy like Eric Fehr. He's constantly ( Like tonight ) allowing guys to shove him around without any fear of retribution. I can't respect that.

Not sure where people get that Pheonix is a bad team,They just missed the playoffs last year and lots of people have them making playoffs this year. Pheonix did what they need to, When they could not get into the caps zon Gretzky made some changes and the caps again look for to many passes. Positives out of this game are a PP goal, shots on the PP, More disiplined game, played 40 mins of good hockey.

Posted by: cocorules | October 24, 2008 7:43 AM | Report abuse

hey BernieWOLFIE
Chicago hasn't made the playoffs in how many seasons?

Why don't you look up the word "panicked" in the dictionary first before trying to tell me to look up "precarious". Like I said, we have 82 games total, and we've only played what, seven games?

@Mauree
I agree with you but I'm not screaming the sky is falling like the rest of these babies.
