Fedorov a Late Scratch
The lineup was just handed out here in the press box and Sergei Fedorov is listed as scratch. So that means he's the sick player Coach Bruce Boudreau referred to before the game. Fedorov will be replaced by Alexandre Giroux, who was recalled as a precaution. So those lines I just posted probably will be a bit scrambled.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 7:34 PM
not to deteriorate this into the usual blather but the Capitals have been guilty of not doing this enough, you've read their quotes, the coach has said this himself. So just because Laich did this tonight doesn't mean that past current and future criticisms are untrue. Its all DEGREES. Its not like the Caps NEVER do this, its that they don't do it ENOUGH. Maybe if we quit talking in extremes we'd get somewhere with these discussions.

Shrimp and grits are gross, and im from the south.
Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 7:46 PM | Report abuse
By the way, 3 players who have really raised their games over the past 2-3 weeks have been Mo, Green and Backstrom. You're seeing a much stronger effort out of those guys. And honorable mention to Laich (and not just for tonight:). He was crashing the net hard in the last game too, esp on the Ovy goal
Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse
@cstanton
wth? Us agreeing? I thought Backstrom had a span of 2-3 weeks where he was watching Ovie go a little too much. Of late he's been much better. Mo has all of a sudden looked like an NHL Dman...and yes while Green's offensive numbers have been slowing down (get that darn stick back) he's been taking the body more and doing a much better job in our own zone.
Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse
yeah all 3 of those guys I've been very impressed with. Mo and Green are taking the body and paying more attention to the defensive end. (my personal feeling is Green's game got raised after being paired with Schultz because he was having to work twice as hard to cover his end as before).
Backstrom's game started getting better at the end of the Avs stinker. He finally got ticked off and embarassed with his own performance and leveled that Wolski kid and his game and effort took off after that.
The player I'm probably most disappointed in recently is Fehr. He's playing a very passive style out there and he's sloww to get back into the play. He needs 3 or 4 strides before his body even goes anywhere.
Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 7:56 PM | Report abuse
Wish he didn't lose his balance on the pass but great recovery there.

I'm going to try to be objective with schultz over the next few games and try to notice the things he does well. Fehr even when he was on his little spurt he still misses obvious scoring chances that I just think a Flash would bury.
Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 8:00 PM | Report abuse
yeah CS, I've noticed the last few games I see Schultz colliding with people. I don't want to say "hitting" yet. More evidence is needed...
Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 8:01 PM | Report abuse
lol, colliding huh, sounds like a science experiment involving particles of matter
ovy needs to show a little more jump in his game, he is looking like a cherry picker right now. Needs to take a straight line to the puck.
Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 8:05 PM | Report abuse
bad shift by the Fehr-Flash line. They just got worked. Caps need to keep up the pace and not sit back on the lead.
Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 8:07 PM | Report abuse
They always try to set him up at the blueline for the long pass either for him to control and take in one on one or for him to try a little tip play to Back/Semin/Koz (depending who's on his line, I saw the SOB line out there briefly a few shifts ago)

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 8:10 PM | Report abuse
not a fan of Semin on that top line, he either makes that line great or he makes that line weak. There's no inbetween. He doesn't seal his lane off at all, pucks all squirt through. Koz is more consistent at working the boards.
Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 8:11 PM | Report abuse
it's incredible, atdhe has every single game except for the caps game. It's like they're intentionally not showing.
Posted by: Moose33 | March 12, 2009 8:12 PM | Report abuse
Semin's board play has been much better of late, think playing on the PK so much has really helped that. At times he'll pass it off too much when he's with Ovie/Back...sometimes like you said it looks fantastic, other times I wish he'd do his magic and get shots off. When he's taking 6-9 shots a game he just seems so dangerous every shift.

Steckel is lucky to hit the mesh above the boards.

my impression is the caps sat on the 1 goal lead, they just quit working as hard as they did in the 1st pd. Generally this team has a hard time staying motivated unless they're behind a goal or two. 2nd periods are tough for them if they have a lead after the 1st. They sit on it until the other team comes back then they turn on the jets again.

I think it's sick the Flyers have six 20 goal scorers. I think if we had guys stay healthy we would see that at the end of the year, as obviously Ovie/Semin/Green already there but guys like Laich/Back/Flash/Kozlov should probably be right there too.

I'd love to see Ovie when he's one on one with a single D to add in a move where he just stops dead and winds up for a drive. They always play him to try to make that move skate to stick or to get their stick in the way, just stop on a dime for some separation and rip it every so often to put that thought in their heads.

I know all about Carcillo's reputation. He probably is trying to go with anyone who is willing at this point. Give his team the momentum.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

gordon with the terrible attempted clear almost cost us the goal

God guys just hold on for Theo he has been stellar tonight.
Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse
i feel like there is something wrong with gordo lately. Low TOI, bad at faceoffs, can't clear, what is up? injury?
Posted by: honed | March 12, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse
Gordo loses yet another faceoff, what is he like 1 for 12 tonite?
Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 9:17 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 12, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse
nice, sounded like a solid game by the caps. According to the official slump rulebook, that win will officially get us out of the slump
Posted by: Moose33 | March 12, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse
play the system = win the game
Posted by: LouLewis | March 12, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse
Erskine lead the game with 5 hits.
maybe we should trade him to the flyers.
Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse
No remember the troll phil, philly never takes caps players, haha
Posted by: ludeman95 | March 12, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse
Caps Win!
Posted by: MReilly9 | March 12, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse
Anyone wonder if the slump wasn't induced by the trade deadline causing some nerves? Suddenly GMGM is like "pssst Pothier is back and wants your job". D men start hitting and playing physical.
Another game where I think we could have scored 4 or 5 but Biron was both lucky AND good when he had to be. Great way to start off on the road.
Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse
yeah but Erskine hits too much for the Caps system.
maybe trade him to calgary then and get a finesse euro.
Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse
hahaha
Posted by: ludeman95 | March 12, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse
Another away win for Caps, well I'm feeling even more away wins coming :)
Juice + Schultz is a good D pairing

Wow Kessel is a burner
Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse
Trading deadline? Nope. As Clark just insinuated on the post-game show it is a matter of the young players thinking that they are the princes of the city. Too many visits to bars that they should not be in. Too many groupies in their apartments at night, and on and on. Get on the road and get away from that stuff.

Pens score 3 goals in about 3 minutes after being down 3-0 in the 3rd in Columbus.
Posted by: tmac2yao | March 12, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse
Peca has the game winner on his stick and tries to put it under Fleury's arm.
Going to OT. Big comeback for the Pens.
Posted by: tmac2yao | March 12, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse
how did the pens tie it up?
damn mason.
Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: ejohnsto | March 12, 2009 8:52 PM

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 12, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Mason just made a huge save to keep it going.
