Fedorov a Late Scratch

The lineup was just handed out here in the press box and Sergei Fedorov is listed as scratch. So that means he's the sick player Coach Bruce Boudreau referred to before the game. Fedorov will be replaced by Alexandre Giroux, who was recalled as a precaution. So those lines I just posted probably will be a bit scrambled.

We're playing good but really need to bury it. PHI game is bound to pick up, and they usually have very good finish.

maybe hes trying to prove something?

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 7:23 PM | Report abuse

3rd penalty for Caps. Making our way to 8 rather quick.

reily, did you get the memo?

Caps are pansies and never stand in front of the opponents net. not enough grit or something.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

Getting rid of Mr. Upshall was probably a mistake...

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 12, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Well, Upshall is kind of a tool. and parties all the time.

I think he needed a team like PHX to shine. and probably to get away from all the Philly frat parties.

Caps are pansies and never stand in front of the opponents net. not enough grit or something.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 7:34 PM

not to deteriorate this into the usual blather but the Capitals have been guilty of not doing this enough, you've read their quotes, the coach has said this himself. So just because Laich did this tonight doesn't mean that past current and future criticisms are untrue. Its all DEGREES. Its not like the Caps NEVER do this, its that they don't do it ENOUGH. Maybe if we quit talking in extremes we'd get somewhere with these discussions.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Shrimp and grits are gross, and im from the south.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 7:46 PM | Report abuse

By the way, 3 players who have really raised their games over the past 2-3 weeks have been Mo, Green and Backstrom. You're seeing a much stronger effort out of those guys. And honorable mention to Laich (and not just for tonight:). He was crashing the net hard in the last game too, esp on the Ovy goal

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 7:48 PM | Report abuse

@cstanton

wth? Us agreeing? I thought Backstrom had a span of 2-3 weeks where he was watching Ovie go a little too much. Of late he's been much better. Mo has all of a sudden looked like an NHL Dman...and yes while Green's offensive numbers have been slowing down (get that darn stick back) he's been taking the body more and doing a much better job in our own zone.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 7:50 PM | Report abuse

yeah all 3 of those guys I've been very impressed with. Mo and Green are taking the body and paying more attention to the defensive end. (my personal feeling is Green's game got raised after being paired with Schultz because he was having to work twice as hard to cover his end as before).

Backstrom's game started getting better at the end of the Avs stinker. He finally got ticked off and embarassed with his own performance and leveled that Wolski kid and his game and effort took off after that.

The player I'm probably most disappointed in recently is Fehr. He's playing a very passive style out there and he's sloww to get back into the play. He needs 3 or 4 strides before his body even goes anywhere.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Wish he didn't lose his balance on the pass but great recovery there.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 7:57 PM | Report abuse

don't look now but Schultz just tried to hit someone alone the boards. wt h

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 8:00 PM | Report abuse

I'm going to try to be objective with schultz over the next few games and try to notice the things he does well. Fehr even when he was on his little spurt he still misses obvious scoring chances that I just think a Flash would bury.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 8:00 PM | Report abuse

yeah CS, I've noticed the last few games I see Schultz colliding with people. I don't want to say "hitting" yet. More evidence is needed...

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 8:01 PM | Report abuse

lol, colliding huh, sounds like a science experiment involving particles of matter

ovy needs to show a little more jump in his game, he is looking like a cherry picker right now. Needs to take a straight line to the puck.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 8:05 PM | Report abuse

bad shift by the Fehr-Flash line. They just got worked. Caps need to keep up the pace and not sit back on the lead.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 8:07 PM | Report abuse

They always try to set him up at the blueline for the long pass either for him to control and take in one on one or for him to try a little tip play to Back/Semin/Koz (depending who's on his line, I saw the SOB line out there briefly a few shifts ago)

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 8:07 PM | Report abuse

So far, theo has been the hero, and has earned a serious fight for the shutout!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 12, 2009 8:07 PM | Report abuse

Stecks...at least get that on net. Good hard work to set that chance up.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 8:10 PM | Report abuse

not a fan of Semin on that top line, he either makes that line great or he makes that line weak. There's no inbetween. He doesn't seal his lane off at all, pucks all squirt through. Koz is more consistent at working the boards.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 8:11 PM | Report abuse

it's incredible, atdhe has every single game except for the caps game. It's like they're intentionally not showing.

Posted by: Moose33 | March 12, 2009 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Semin's board play has been much better of late, think playing on the PK so much has really helped that. At times he'll pass it off too much when he's with Ovie/Back...sometimes like you said it looks fantastic, other times I wish he'd do his magic and get shots off. When he's taking 6-9 shots a game he just seems so dangerous every shift.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Steckel is lucky to hit the mesh above the boards.

Carcillo and Cote may go before this is over...They dont know what to do without a dancing partner on the Caps.

Ovie WAS guilty of lack of back-checking there. Not a fan of Juice pinching that high but that's on Ovie.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Schultz had a solid game so far but man why he took the shooter again.

Posted by: mauree | March 12, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

the flyers 4th line of cote and asham can be credited with providing the momentum for that goal, they bottled up our defense and forced some bad passes, started with a big hit on Giroux

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

thanks numero 55. great defensive play...

Posted by: vitya_1986 | March 12, 2009 8:18 PM | Report abuse

Of course he was out of position. He got tooled by that slap pass.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 8:18 PM | Report abuse

my impression is the caps sat on the 1 goal lead, they just quit working as hard as they did in the 1st pd. Generally this team has a hard time staying motivated unless they're behind a goal or two. 2nd periods are tough for them if they have a lead after the 1st. They sit on it until the other team comes back then they turn on the jets again.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 8:19 PM | Report abuse

schultz is always in position except everytime the other team scores...

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 8:20 PM | Report abuse

Caps can't handle the forecheck. ONce the Flyers start hitting the Caps D looks disorganized with little to no help from their forwards. That play started with Hartnell cuffing Green on the back of his head and Green lost the puck

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 8:20 PM | Report abuse

who the hell can anyone blame theo for that goal

Posted by: _stevo | March 12, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

what a lazy play by Gagne there. Just let Ovie have it.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 8:23 PM | Report abuse

semin just got almost knocked into the flyers bench on a hit by Richards

only guy hitting on our top line is Backstrom

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 8:23 PM | Report abuse

Giroux with the 8 second windup on that rebound chance.

Caps may be the biggest but they also register fewer hits than almost any team in the league. Tonight they had just one hit in the entire 2nd period up until the last shift. Thats 17 mins worth of hockey and one hit.

Yes, OVI! But great play and hustle by Semin.

Posted by: opita1 | March 12, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Ovie throws the hit, Semin does his usual rip off. That's when that line looks good.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

that's my point...we should be running over teams. Noone should be standing in our own crease

Posted by: Moose33 | March 12, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

i thought backstrom was the only one who was hitting.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

And the great board work and hustle results in another good shift by the SOB line. When they skate like that we get sustained pressure their entire shift.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 8:29 PM | Report abuse

Why wouldn't Nylander just try and shoot it there? Get a guy driving to the net and fire it on there. Instead to the surprise of no one he hooks off. I shouldn't be too upset Juice did get a blast off.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 8:30 PM | Report abuse

We got worked for most of that period.

oh well.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 8:28 PM

he was, until Ovy threw a hit behind the net. I don't see the confusion. Caps like to sit on a lead and only turn it back up after the other team responds with a goal. Pretty par for the course.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 8:37 PM | Report abuse

We need to win more face-offs in the 3rd, especially in our own end.

The Flyers have won 22 of 33 and Gordon is 1-for-7.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 12, 2009 8:39 PM | Report abuse

@tmac

Yeah Feds had been doing very well in the dot of late. Funny how much you miss that presence when it's not there. I found it very significant the guy to ice the game to end our small losing streak was Feds.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

I think it's sick the Flyers have six 20 goal scorers. I think if we had guys stay healthy we would see that at the end of the year, as obviously Ovie/Semin/Green already there but guys like Laich/Back/Flash/Kozlov should probably be right there too.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Feds had one of his best games of the season last game and we miss him tonight but Gordon is a top-tier FO guy. We'll probably need him and the rest of our checking line to do well in the 3rd.

in order for this to happen in today's NHL, Ovie is going to put up significantly less numbers.

I'd love to see Ovie when he's one on one with a single D to add in a move where he just stops dead and winds up for a drive. They always play him to try to make that move skate to stick or to get their stick in the way, just stop on a dime for some separation and rip it every so often to put that thought in their heads.

Doesn't seem that the Caps are really interested in teaching Schultz how to use his size. I don't recall any comments by McPhee or Bruce stating that they'd like to see Schultz be a more imposing figure.

Carcillo wants to go, fehr telling him to f off.

Carcillo is one nasty kid. He spent a couple seasons in Wilkes-Barre while Fehr was in Hershey. Fehr knows better than to tangle with Carcillo.

It was definitely a penalty though. GREAT PLAY BY OVIE

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

I know all about Carcillo's reputation. He probably is trying to go with anyone who is willing at this point. Give his team the momentum.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 9:03 PM | Report abuse

Can't complain, refs got 2 in a row right.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: _stevo | March 12, 2009 9:11 PM | Report abuse

what a game, playoffs intensity - very glad to see the Caps up to the task, not intimidated by PHI physicality.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

Mo is playing like a man possessed out there. Cleaning house and takin names.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

Wow this is about as cheap a call as it gets.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

backstrom....after a lazy turnover, then you take a bad penalty.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Thats a BS call.

Posted by: mauree | March 12, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

great play poti to clear on a dive

why is JSchultz on the ice?

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Gordo tried for the home run pass.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

PUSH THAT GUY OUT OF THEOS VIEW.

CHRIST

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

Gordon has to clear that. Theo playing very well

Posted by: skins1110 | March 12, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

gordon with the terrible attempted clear almost cost us the goal

however schultz actually did something in the crease, he xchecked Knuble then slashes him across his calf. u go boy

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

God guys just hold on for Theo he has been stellar tonight.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

i feel like there is something wrong with gordo lately. Low TOI, bad at faceoffs, can't clear, what is up? injury?

Posted by: honed | March 12, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

Gordo loses yet another faceoff, what is he like 1 for 12 tonite?

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 12, 2009 9:17 PM | Report abuse

Lol yeah Philly fans...you don't get that many token calls.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 9:17 PM | Report abuse

PK has been nothing short of fantastic

Posted by: skins1110 | March 12, 2009 9:17 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: skins1110 | March 12, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Whoooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 12, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

nice, sounded like a solid game by the caps. According to the official slump rulebook, that win will officially get us out of the slump

Posted by: Moose33 | March 12, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

play the system = win the game

Posted by: LouLewis | March 12, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Erskine lead the game with 5 hits.

maybe we should trade him to the flyers.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse

No remember the troll phil, philly never takes caps players, haha

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 12, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Caps Win!

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 12, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Anyone wonder if the slump wasn't induced by the trade deadline causing some nerves? Suddenly GMGM is like "pssst Pothier is back and wants your job". D men start hitting and playing physical.

Another game where I think we could have scored 4 or 5 but Biron was both lucky AND good when he had to be. Great way to start off on the road.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse

yeah but Erskine hits too much for the Caps system.

maybe trade him to calgary then and get a finesse euro.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse

hahaha

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 12, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Another away win for Caps, well I'm feeling even more away wins coming :)

Juice + Schultz is a good D pairing

Posted by: Hazz | March 12, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 12, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Wow Kessel is a burner

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 12, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Trading deadline? Nope. As Clark just insinuated on the post-game show it is a matter of the young players thinking that they are the princes of the city. Too many visits to bars that they should not be in. Too many groupies in their apartments at night, and on and on. Get on the road and get away from that stuff.

Posted by: MKadyman | March 12, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Pens score 3 goals in about 3 minutes after being down 3-0 in the 3rd in Columbus.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 12, 2009 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Peca has the game winner on his stick and tries to put it under Fleury's arm.

Going to OT. Big comeback for the Pens.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 12, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

how did the pens tie it up?

damn mason.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 12, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Steve Mason gonna get his 9th shutout tonight.

Posted by: ejohnsto | March 12, 2009 8:52 PM

Ahhh not the s-word!

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 12, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Kunitz rings the post. Still in OT.

Mason just made a huge save to keep it going.
